    Vacation nightmare: 12 family members diagnosed with fungal disease after exploring Costa Rica cave
    An extended family of six adults and six children brought home more than just souvenirs from Costa Rica after touring a bat cave.The family that is spread across three states Georgia, Texas and Washington returned home feeling sick after a recent vacation.According to the Centers for Disease Control, on January 17, 2025, a Georgia infectious disease physician notified CDC of suspected histoplasmosis cases.Prior to the report, the family had visited the Venado Caves in Costa Rica, which was linked to a previous histoplasmosis outbreak.4 BIGGEST HANDWASHING MISTAKES THAT COULD INCREASE GERMS AND VIRUSESWhile there were 13 family members traveling on December 2128, only 12, six adults aged 4249 and six children aged 816, who visited the cave were diagnosed with histoplasmosis.Histoplasmosis is defined by the CDC as a fungal infection that primarily affects the lungs.Histoplasmosis is caused byHistoplasma organisms, which are often found in soil contaminated with bird or bat droppings.The condition is often misdiagnosed, as it was in this particular case.One adult went to an emergency room and was hospitalized because of an abnormal chest radiography.The findings raised concerns about lung cancer.All 12 members who toured the cave became ill after 8-19 days of the exposure.WASHINGTON DOCTOR DIES DURING GRAND CANYON RIM-TO-RIM HIKE AT AGE 74Family members experiencedheadaches, malaise, fever, night sweats, myalgias, and respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms.They all recovered to full health 28 days after exposure.The Venado Caves in Costa Rica are also associated with another histoplasmosis outbreak in 19981999 that affected 51 people.In response to this outbreak, the CDC alerted health departments through an Epidemic Information Exchange notification to help identify additional cases.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPThe CDC has been collaborating with the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Ministry of Health to incorporate information about histoplasmosis risks into the caving tours waiver forms.In addition, the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica issued a health alert in March 2025 notifying the public of the risk of contracting histoplasmosis from the cave tours.

    Louisiana police arrest third accomplice in Orleans Parish jailbreak
    A third alleged accomplice has been arrested in connection with the escape of one of ten inmates from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility, according to Louisiana State Police.Connie Weeden, 59, is believed to have assisted the fugitives and was taken into custody following an investigation that revealed she was in contact via phone with escapee Jermaine Donald both before and after the escape. Donald remains at large.Authorities say Weeden gave cash to Donald via a "cell phone app." She has been charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center.TWO MORE ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY AIDING NEW ORLEANS JAILBREAK FUGITIVES"According to Louisiana law, those convicted of accessory after the fact shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars, or imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than five years, or both," a statement from the LA state police said. "Law enforcement personnel from multiple local, state, and federal agencies will continue to pursue every lead until the remaining fugitives are located. Those who choose to assist or conceal these individuals are violating the law and will be held accountable. Harboring fugitives threatens the safety of our communities and will not be tolerated."AUNT URGES CONVICTED MURDERER TO SURRENDER AS ORLEANS PARISH JAIL MANHUNT CONTINUESWeeden is the third person charged for aiding the escapees since the jailbreak.
