Shooting at Capital Jewish Museum highlights rising wave of anti-Jewish hate crimes
The shooting of two Israeli Embassy employees in Washington, D.C., after a Jewish event Wednesday highlights the struggle American cities face trying to protect Jewish citizens and landmarks, which have repeatedly been targeted by radicals and terrorists over the years.Anti-Jewish hate crimes have soared to record highs, according to the Anti-Defamation League, citing FBI data. Massacres include the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh in 2018 and the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack Hamas launched on Israel.Large police departments, like the NYPD, have been focused on target-hardening efforts to improve safety in and around Jewish landmarks for years."Unfortunately, over the decades, special attention has had to be paid when there is a Jewish or Israeli theme to these locations and events," said Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD Inspector. "This was only heightened after 9/11, after the Tree of Life murders in Pittsburgh, after 7 October after so many others."POLICE RAID DC SHOOTING SUSPECT ELIAS RODRIGUEZ'S CHICAGO APARTMENTIn New York, police have visibly beefed up their presence outside synagogues, the Israeli consulate and the Big Apple's own Jewish Museum. When there's even the perceived chance of a threat, the department will routinely beef up security around Jewish landmarks in the city. Some have a visible police presence all year."The good news is that NYPD knows how to do this and, while nothing is perfect, they have developed great expertise in this area often thanks to best-practices gleaned from partner agencies around the world," Mauro said.ISRAELI OFFICIAL WARNS OF THE GROWING 'TSUNAMI' OF ANTISEMITISMMany other departments have adopted the NYPD's protocols.Whenever attacks take place, police around the country are quick to announce increased patrols near places of worship.Despite years of police efforts, attacks continue, including a shooting at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night. The 31-year-old suspect, Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, is accused of fatally shooting two Israeli Embassy workers from behind after they left an event sponsored by the American Jewish Committee.OPINION: STOP TALKING, START TEACHING: NEW YORK MUST FIGHT TO END ANTISEMITISM IN OUR SCHOOLSMauro told Fox News Digital that visible security measures may have influenced the decision to attack outside the venue rather than within the building."The fact that the story is that he was pacing around out front, and that the event was going on right there, and then he decided to do it outside?" he said. "He traveled all the way from Chicago to do this?"He noted that the venue and organizers did have some security measures in place. The invitations were encrypted and limited. At least one off-duty MPD officer was inside for security. The officer, who was wearing a police vest, may have scared the suspected gunman from opening fire inside the building, he said."I think he saw the security and said, Im better off not going in there and getting shot myself,'" Mauro speculated. "He didnt decide to shoot it out. He decided to pull a Mangione. He wanted to live."Luigi Mangione, a 27-year-old Ivy League grad turned suspected killer, is accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson from behind after stalking him in Manhattan. He allegedly had a manifesto outlining his disdain for the health insurance industry in his backpack when police arrested him at a Pennsylvania McDonald's days later.A possible manifesto from Rodriguez was being investigated by the FBI to verify its authenticity, Deputy Director Dan Bongino revealed on X Thursday. The Jewish community has also taken its own measures to increase security.Texas resident David Katz, a former DEA agent and the CEO of the Global Security Group, uses his expertise on active-shooter response to train Jewish volunteers to protect their own synagogues on the side."I can't believe, still, that someone could be pacing in an agitated manner outside a major Jewish institution and no one challenges the guy?" he told Fox News Digital. "No one calls the police to even interview him?"An outside presence is a key aspect of security that Katz teaches, he said."In my synagogue, one of the volunteers would simply go out and say hi," he explained. "Engage the person and see how they respond. You look for body language clues while scanning for concealed weapons. We would have back-up volunteers ready to act. Everyone is armed and everyone is trained."

Diddy sunk $35 million into Miami mansion, but Star Island digs may not be safe if he's convicted: expert
Sean "Diddy" Combs' Miami home in the exclusive Star Island sector of South Florida was one of the targets raided in the federal case against the disgraced music mogul.Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officials descended onto the property in March 2024, and recent evidence revealed in Diddy's federal trial showed a trove of weapons, alleged drugs and sex paraphernalia recovered from the mansion. In a federal indictment unsealed on Sept. 17, Diddy was charged with racketeering conspiracy (RICO); sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution. If found guilty, he faces a minimum of 15 years behind bars or a maximum sentence of life in prison. He has maintained his innocence.Legal experts told Fox News Digital that if the "Last Night" rapper is convicted of the RICO charges, there's a possibility he may lose the property.CASSIE'S MOTHER'S TESTIMONY MAY PROVE TO BE VERY DAMAGING TO DIDDY'S CASE: EXPERTMemphis criminal defense lawyer Phil Harvey noted that while Diddy paid off the mortgage, the government still could seize the estate."There are two layers to prove," Harvey said. "First, he has to get convicted of count 1 of the indictment, the RICO charge. That means the jury finds him guilty of running a criminal enterprise through his entertainment businesses."Harvey added, "Second, the jury will have to determine if the prosecutors prove that the Star Island home was involved in, used or intended to be used in the commission of the RICO crimes,or if it was purchased with proceeds obtained as a result of RICO crimes. If the jury finds that the property fits that description, then the government will argue that Mr. Combs shall forfeit the Miami mansion."DIDDY TRIAL WITNESS REVEALS THREATS AND VIOLENCE THAT COULD SUPPORT RICO CHARGES: EXPERTThe Bad Boy Records founder first moved into the neighborhood in 2003 when he purchased Tommy Mottola's sprawling nine-bedroom, 12-bathroom estate for $14.5 million.Nearly 20 years later, he shelled out $35 million to purchase the home next door, 1 Star Island, which was previously owned by Gloria and Emilio Estefan. The 1.3-acre property boasts an 8,000-square-foot mansion with six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in addition to an immaculate outdoor oasis.WATCH ON FOX NATION: WHAT DIDDY DO?HSI Special Agent Gerard Gannon claimed law enforcement officials recovered semiautomatic rifles during the March 25, 2024, raid. Gannon told Madison Smyser of the United States Attorney's Office that not only was he responsible for planning and executing the raid, he was also positioned near the evidence van and could see the evidence being retrieved. Gannon was also personally in all the rooms of Diddy's Star Island mansion, except the basement. He claimed on the stand that "80 to 90 officers" were involved in the search due to the size of the property and the security measures. The search allegedly began at 3:30 p.m., which is "not typical," but agents had learned Diddy was taking a trip out of the country, so HSI waited.Photo evidence from one of the rooms included images of AR-15s on a top shelf. Platform high heels, sex toys, baby oil, lingerie and condoms were also seen in the room. One image showed the lower parts of an AR-15 rifle, and inside a towel two upper receivers were shown.LIKE WHAT YOURE READING? "Typically, one loses their home when it is subject to forfeiture. Typically, items, including houses, are only subject to forfeiture when it is believed that the source of income to purchase the items or the home comes from the charges for which the person is convicted. Diddy, like him or hate him, had a very successful music career."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERLos Angeles litigator John J. Perlstein told Fox News Digital that while the government may be able to seize his property, Diddy would "still likely have a right to contest" a forfeiture."In O.J. Simpson's case, Floridas homestead exemption laws prevented the forced sale of his property to meet debt and civil obligations since the property was not linked to charges against him," Perlstein said. "Diddy might have a right to keep one of his residences not linked to alleged crimes."

Ancient Christian figurines discovered in 1,500-year-old desert graves
Archaeologists recently uncovered extraordinary artifacts from an ancient African Christian community in Israel, according to officials. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced the finds on May 14.In a Facebook post, the organization said the objects were discovered during an excavation at Tel Malata, a mound in the Arad Valley of the Negev Desert. In ancient times, Tel Malata served as a crossroads that merchants from the Arabian Peninsula, India and Africa used.ARCHAEOLOGISTS STUMPED BY STRANGE ALIEN-LIKE FIGURINE DATING BACK 7,000 YEARS: 'RAISES QUESTIONS'The items were found in 1,500-year-old graves of women and children, according to the IAA. Pictures show multiple figurines with human face shapes, along with scattered artifacts, including jugs and pottery fragments.Archaeologists also found other burial offerings, including glassware, bronze bracelets, and jewelry made of stone and alabaster. The burials were conducted according to ancient Christian tradition, with excavators describing the figurines as being "heads of African figures, carved in black wood."In a journal article, researchers said the figurines show that a Christian community lived in Southern Israel "about 1,500 years ago, possibly with some of its members coming from Africa."Said the article, "Carved from bone, and from ebony wood a rare raw material originating from southern India and Sri Lanka the figurines were designed in the form of women and men bearing prominent African facial features, and with a hole for the purpose of wearing them around the neck."ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER GOLDEN 'TONGUES' AND 'NAILS' IN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN TOMB: 'REMARKABLE AREA'The study added, "It seems their purpose was not only decorative, but also as intimate personal items carrying with them a story of identity, tradition and memory."The IAA noted that the artifacts were "carefully placed" among the deceased women and children, and after 1,500 years, they're still "exceptionally well-preserved.""It is possible that the figures represent ancestors, and thus they reflect traditions passed down from generation to generation even after the adoption of the Christian religion," researchers said. For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyleThe article continued, "It is likely that a woman and a child who were buried side-by-side, and in whose graves two of the figurines were discovered, belonged to the same family and perhaps they were even mother and son."The IAA noted that unearthing African figurines in Christian graves in Israel is quite unusual and called the find "a rare discovery.""[It] deepens our understanding of the cultural diversity among the inhabitants of the country in this region about 1,500 years ago," the agency wrote.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTEREli Escusido, director of the IAA, described the findings as "moving, not only from an archaeological perspective, but also on a human level."He added, "They serve as a reminder that the Land of Israel has always been a crossroads of cultures and peoples individuals arrived here, integrated into the local population, and yet still carried with them traditions and beliefs from distant lands."The grave discoveries are a few of many remarkable IAA finds in the past year.In December, the agency announced the discovery of the oldest-known Chinese inscription in Israel, which was found at the holy site of Mount Zion.In March, an Israeli child uncovered a 3,800-year-old Canaanite amulet at a mound called Tel Azeka, located in the Judean Foothills.
