'Social sleep apnea' could be ruining your weekend rest, study suggests
For those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the condition could be significantly worse on the weekends. After investigating changes in severity, researchers at Flinders University in Australia discovered that symptoms of OSA were markedly more prominent at the end of the week. The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, analyzed sleep data from more than 70,000 users of an under-mattress sleep monitor that tracked OSA severity across every day of the week.ALZHEIMER'S RISK COULD RISE WITH SPECIFIC SLEEP PATTERN, EXPERTS WARNData was collected for sleep duration, sleep timing and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a measure of the severity of sleep apnea. The participants predominantly middle-aged, overweight men had an average of more than five OSA events per night.OSA severity "significantly increased" on weekends, jumping 18% higher on Saturdays compared to Wednesdays. The overall severity score was 6% higher on weekends compared to weekdays on average. This increase was found to be greater in men and in participants younger than 60.HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SLEEPING POSITION FOR YOU, ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS"This real-world study evaluating day-of-week variations in OSA severity in over 70,000 users revealed a global increase in OSA severity on weekends, a phenomenon we have termed social apnea," the researchers wrote in the study.Weekend catch-up sleep and "social jetlag" which can be defined as a misalignment between someone's natural circadian rhythm and their social clock led to a 47% and 38% increase, respectively, in the odds of OSA over the weekend."This is in line with previous findings showing that irregular sleep is associated with greater odds of OSA," the authors commented. "Since OSA is typically more severe during REM sleep, weekend catch-up sleep and social jetlag are likely to exacerbate OSA severity."The authors also pinpointed other factors that can impact OSA severity, including an increase in alcohol consumption and smoking."Further research is needed to better understand the causes and mechanisms behind the novel social apnea phenomenon identified in this study," they added.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERSleep expert Wendy Troxel, PhD a RAND Corporation senior behavioral specialist and licensed clinical psychologist in Utah, who was not involved in the study also reacted to the findings in an interview with Fox News Digital."This recent study provides novel insights into the day-to-day variability of obstructive sleep apnea severity, highlighting what the authors refer to as a social apnea effect, where OSA worsens on weekends," Troxel confirmed.Troxel agreed that these fluctuations in OSA severity are likely due to "common weekend behaviors" like increased alcohol consumption, skipping CPAP treatment and "catching up" on sleep."All of these can disrupt sleep and circadian rhythms and exacerbate apnea severity," she said. For more Health articles, visitfoxnews.com/healthThese findings suggest that single-night sleep tests done on weeknights may underestimate the severity of OSA, according to the expert."Individuals with OSA should try to maintain consistent sleep-wake schedules throughout the week, limit alcohol intake and use CPAP treatment as prescribed every night of the week," Troxel advised.

Grateful Deads Jerry Garcia was intimidated by guitar legend Michael Bloomfield: book
Bob Dylan once said Jerry Garcia had no equal. Yet the music icon, still worshipped decades after his death, was intimidated by one artist.Jim Marshall, the legendary photographer behind some of musics most iconic images including Johnny Cash flipping off the camera at San Quentin and Dylan strolling through Greenwich Village was one of the few granted the Grateful Deads trust. Through his lens, Marshall discovered a different side of the bands charismatic leader.Marshall, who died in 2010 at age 74, took thousands of photos of the Grateful Dead throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Many of those coveted images previously unseen by the public are featured in a new book, "The Grateful Dead by Jim Marshall: Photos and Stories from the Formative Years, 19661977." They were uncovered by Amelia Davis, Marshalls assistant of 13 years and now owner and manager of Jim Marshall Photography LLC.GRATEFUL DEADS HELL IN A BUCKET DUCK GOT DRUNK ON SET, PAL POINTS TO WHO LIKELY MADE IT HAPPEN"There was one photo that surprised me," Davis told Fox News Digital. "[Garcia is] in a red sweater, and then theres [his ex-wife] Mountain Girl in the middle, and then theres Mike Bloomfield on the side. What we discovered from interviewing Mountain Girl [about the photo] is that Jerry Garcia actually felt threatened by Michael Bloomfield as a musician.""Jerry Garcia was a great musician and guitar player everybody looked up to him and thought he was so great," Davis said. "So it was interesting to find out that he was intimidated by another musician at the time, who was Michael Bloomfield. It shows that he was human and had fears like anybody else.""He didnt want to be overshadowed by Mike Bloomfield," Davis added. When the Grateful Dead formed in 1965, they already knew of Marshall, the East Coast photographer who quickly earned the respect of jazz greats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, Marshall stood out in his Brooks Brothers white Oxford shirt, penny loafers and fitted jacket. He "stuck out like a sore thumb" among hippies, said Davis.Marshall was soon welcomed into the scruffy jam bands inner circle. It was no secret among them that Garcia was often nervous playing around Bloomfield, a music force of the era and someone whom Garcia hailed as one of the greatest guitarists of his lifetime.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER"They were all friends, so its not like they didnt like each other," Davis explained. "They all hung out and played together. But the Grateful Dead were an improvisational band. They could really play songs just right at that moment. If they played the same song the next night, it would not be the same because they based their playing on the vibe of what was happening. And Mike Bloomfield was great at improvisational playing, too.""Jerry was intimidated when they played together," Davis said. "Mike Bloomfield could play just as well as Jerry, if not better sometimes. And I think thats what really intimidated him."In 1968, Bloomfield told Rolling Stone that Garcias talent was a sound of its own."I can pick out certain things in what the Rolling Stones play, a few things that I know are exactly the licks that I play," he said at the time. "Then I hear guitar players like Jerry Garcia. He sounds amazingly like hes trying to sound like me, but I dont think he is. I think he came that way himself."For Marshall, the bands rise was a long, strange trip."We were looking through these photographs and here was one where theyre just cracking up, and theyve got pieces of paper," Davis said. "We wanted to figure out what was going on. We reached out to [bandmates] Phil Lesh, who was still alive when we were putting this book together, and Mickey Hart. They said, Great photograph, but we dont remember anything."LIKE WHAT YOURE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS"I remember on the back of this printed photograph was the inscription Grateful Dead prior to dosing process server," she continued. "They got sued all the time if you look closely, theyre legal papers. Its the process server serving the Grateful Dead. And they were dosing. Thats just what the Grateful Dead did all the time.""Jim used to say, I learned my lesson to never eat or drink anything when I was around the Grateful Dead," Davis chuckled. "Jim had gotten dosed a couple of times. And he would always say, No way, Im not going to do that anymore."Looking through the images, Davis said that Garcia wasnt the only artist who became vulnerable in front of Marshall."I came across a photo of Ron Pigpen McKernan by himself, walking down the street," she said. "It was just so moving because Pigpen always felt like the outsider in the group."He always felt like he was not a part of the group, even though everybody considered Pigpen the heart and soul of the Grateful Dead. But he was more into blues. In the beginning, the band did a lot of blues and jazz. And then they really went hard into rock n roll and went in a different direction. Pigpen didnt want to go in that direction. He was more hardcore blues. So he really felt left out and alone.""I think that photograph of Pigpen just walking down the street by himself is so moving," Davis continued. "It shows how he felt. Jim was able to capture that emotion, that feeling, in a photograph. You dont even have to say anything, and you feel that isolation. And I think Jim could also relate to that photograph because Jim himself really felt like an outsider. I think in some ways, that photograph reflects how Jim felt about himself, too."McKernan died in 1973 at age 27 from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage.Despite finding themselves in the glaring spotlight, the Grateful Dead werent fazed by fame."They were always very community-oriented," Davis said. "They always wanted to include the people, the community that followed them, lived with them, listened to them. They really wanted to make a connection. So how did they navigate fame? They stayed true to themselves. They didnt compromise that. And thats why some of their songs would be an hour long they just got so into the music, spontaneous music really. Its who they were. And in doing that, they influenced a whole generation of jam bands."Along the way, there was Marshall photographing them."What was it like being with the Grateful Dead? They joked around," Davis said. "They loved to do practical jokes and play around. And Jim witnessed that. He became part of that family I think trust was big for the band. They knew Jim would never betray their trust. And thats why they opened themselves up to him.""For many people, the Grateful Dead are heroes, theyre gods," Davis reflected. "But they were human, like you and me. They had their hopes and fears like anyone else. And along the way, they were having fun."

'The Brady Bunch' star Susan Olsen admits she disliked her 'stupid' Cindy Brady character
"The Brady Bunch" star Susan Olsen admitted she disliked her character Cindy Brady, whom she began playing when she was 7 years old. The 64-year-old actress portrayed the youngest Brady child in the hit sitcom from 1969 to 1974. While Cindy was popular with many of the show's viewers, Olsen shared that she was not a fan of the character."As a child, I didn't like Cindy," Olsen admitted during a recent interview with People magazine. She continued, "I used to say I wouldn't even have her for a friend, because she was a tattletale."BRADY BUNCH ACTOR ADMITS ROMANCE WITH CO-STAR WAS ON-AGAIN, OFF-AGAIN FOR YEARS"She was kind of stupid. "I didn't know why that was cute."Though she later came to understand the producers' motivations for how they developed the character, Olsen told People that playing Cindy was awkward for her when she was a child star. She went on to recall that some of Cindy's lines made her a target for bullying at school.LIKE WHAT YOURE READING? "Cindy would say something stupid, and then I'd go to school."Olsen remembered that facing the other children at school was particularly difficult after the second-season episode "A Fistful of Reasons" aired. In the episode, Cindy was repeatedly teased over her lisp by the school bully Buddy Hinson. The actress said her lisp was real and the show's writers incorporated it into her character. However, Olsen told People that having her lisp become a major plot point of an episode "gave all kinds of ammo to my bullies."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERThough Olsen said that she had a supportive group of friends at school, she told People that other children were "horrible," recalling that they mocked her "mercilessly" over Cindy's lines and actions."I was grateful that I wasn't being teased for something bad," she said. "It was something they were jealous of, and there were incidents that showed me why they were jealous, and I totally understood it," she said."I thought, well, you know, I don't blame them," Olsen added. "I'd be jealous of me, too, because look at the fun I have. I led two lives, and I never let the paths cross."After "The Brady Bunch" ended, Olsen reprised her role as Cindy in the variety show "The Brady Bunch Hour" from 1976 to 1977 and the TV movies, 1981's "The Brady Girls Get Married" and 1990's "The Bradys." Olsen also voiced the character of Cindy in the animated series "The Brady Kids" from 1972 to 1974.According to People magazine, Olsen now works as a children's acting coach at Vibes Performing Arts in Santa Clarita, California.
