Chinese national who overstayed visa learns fate for exporting weapons to North Korea
An illegal immigrant accused of exporting shipments of firearms, ammunition and other military items that were concealed inside shipping containers to North Korea was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison.Shenghua Wen, 42, of the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, had been in federal custody since December 2024 before pleading guilty in June to one count of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and one count of acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.Wen, a Chinese citizen, entered the United States in 2012 on a student visa and remained in the U.S. illegally after the visa expired in December 2013, the Justice Department said. Before entering the U.S., Wen met with North Korean government officials at that country's embassy in China where they asked him to procure goods on behalf of the communist state.CHINESE STUDENT ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY SMUGGLING UNDECLARED BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS SEEN IN NEW MUGSHOT"Wen and some co-conspirators successfully shipped firearms and ammunition to North Korea by concealing the items inside shipping containers that were shipped from Long Beach, Calif., through Hong Kong, China, to North Korea," federal prosecutors said.On Aug. 14, authorities seized two devices a chemical threat identification device and a hand-held broadband receiver that detects eavesdropping devices -- at Wen's home that he intended to send to North Korea, the Justice Department said. On Sept. 6, law enforcement seized approximately 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition that Wen allegedly obtained to send to North Korea.Messages retrieved from Wens cellphones revealed discussions with co-conspirators about shipping military-grade equipment to North Korea. Some of these messages include photographs that Wen sent of items controlled for export under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a December news release.CHINESE PHD STUDENT FROM WUHAN ARRESTED SMUGGLING BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS AFTER DELETING ELECTRONIC EVIDENCE: DOJFrom January to April 2024, Wen sent emails and text messages to a U.S.-based broker about obtaining a civilian plane engine. There also were several text messages on Wens iPhone about price negotiations for the plane and its engine.North Korean officials wired Wen $2 million to get the firearms and other items. He told investigators that he believed the North Korean government wanted the weapons and ammunition for a potential attack on South Korea. With the money, Wen was able to pay for an armory and a federal firearm license for $150,000 and listed his partner's name as the business owner to register with the Texas Secretary of State. In an effort to fly under the radar and avoid detection by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), he had others purchase firearms for him, authorities said."Once the straw purchasers gave WEN the firearms, he transported them to California, packed the firearms into a shipping container, and shipped the container to China, knowing that it would be transferred to North Korea," court documents state.

Ex-Paramount chief hoped Trump lawsuit would force CBS to be more balanced on Israel
The former Paramount chief reportedly saw a silver lining in President Donald Trump's prolonged legal battle with CBS News.Shari Redstone, who was the controlling shareholder of the media giant before recently selling it to Skydance Media as part of an $8 billion merger, was outspoken about her support for Paramount to settle Trump's lawsuit over allegations of "election interference" in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election. Trump and Paramount reached a multimillion-dollar settlement last month. However, it wasn't CBS' political coverage that irked Redstone. It was the network's coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. According to The New York Times, "Maybe, she thought, Mr. Trumps criticism of the news division, and his lawsuit, could be helpful.""We needed more balance," Redstone said in an interview with The New York Times Tuesday, referring to CBS' war coverage. "Part of me thought, maybe Trump could accomplish what I never got done."SHARI REDSTONE BREAKS SILENCE ON NO-BRAINER 16M TRUMP SETTLEMENT THAT PRECEDED PARAMOUNT-SKYDANCE MERGERRedstone, a staunch supporter of Israel, was vocal in her complaints about how slanted she perceived CBS' coverage was against Israel. The Times reported that a major inflection point came when "60 Minutes" aired a segment featuring former State Department officials who resigned in protest over U.S. support for Israel. The segment was viewed as one-sided with an emphasis on allegations of atrocities committed by Israel, while barely mentioning the barbaric Oct. 7 terrorist attack committed by Hamas.Internal objections to the episode led to the appointment of CBS veteran Susan Zirinsky as the network's newly created executive editor of standards, which, in turn, The Times reported, led to "60 Minutes" executive producer Bill Owens' abrupt exit in protest over the increased corporate oversight. Owens' resignation caused further consternation with "60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley lamenting the drama on-air.PARAMOUNT, SKYDANCE COMPLETE $8 BILLION MERGER AS FCC CONTINUES CBS PROBERedstone also spoke up in defense of "CBS Mornings" co-host Tony Dokoupil, who was facing internal backlash for grilling liberal media darling and anti-Israel author Ta-Nehisi Coates in an October 2024 interview. Dokoupil was scolded by his bosses, who told him the interview didn't meet "editorial standards." Dokoupil also apologized to offended staffers."I think Tony did a great job with that interview. I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. He showed that there was accountability, that there is a system of checks and balances, and frankly, I was very proud of the work that he did," Redstone said at the time. "As hard as it was, frankly, for me to go against the company, because I love this company, and I believe in it, and I think we have a great, great executive team, I think they made a mistake here."CLICK HERE FOR THE LATEST MEDIA AND CULTURE NEWSCBS staffers last year were also reportedly instructed not to refer to Jerusalem, Israel's capital, as being in Israel, saying in a memo its status is "disputed" and that it "goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."Redstone, the daughter of the late billionaire mogul Sumner Redstone, was widely expected to receive a $2.4 billion buyout as a result of the Skydance merger. Paramount is now being run by David Ellison, son of billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.

Trump calls Smithsonian 'OUT OF CONTROL' and orders sweeping review of all museums and programming
President Donald Trump escalated his battle for American culture with the Smithsonian Institution on Tuesday, ordering a broad review of the nations leading museums after blasting them on Truth Social as "the last remaining segment of WOKE." The move was also formalized in a White House letter released in a letter Aug. 12 to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch.Trumps post accused the Smithsonian as well as other museums nationwide of pushing narratives that disparage the U.S. rather than celebrate its achievements."The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of WOKE," Trump wrote. "The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future."He added: "This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the HOTTEST Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums."AMERICAN HISTORY WON'T BE DISPLAYED 'IN A WOKE MANNER' AT SMITHSONIAN, TRUMP SAYSThe letter instructs Smithsonian leaders to provide exhibition plans, internal guidelines, and America 250 programming materials for review."As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our Nations founding, it is more important than ever that our national museums reflect the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story," the letter stated. "This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the Presidents directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions."According to administration officials, the review will focus on public-facing content, curatorial processes, exhibition planning, collection use, and overall narrative standards. The initial phase will target the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.TRUMP WHITE HOUSE CALLS OUT SMITHSONIAN FOR PUSHING 'ONE-SIDED, DIVISIVE POLITICAL NARRATIVES'Tuesdays announcement follows earlier White House criticism of specific Smithsonian exhibitions. On July 5, Fox News Digital reported that officials had singled out the Entertainment Nation exhibit at the National Museum of American History for review. At the time, White House special assistant Lindsey Halligan said to Fox News Digital, "American taxpayers should not be funding institutions that undermine our country or promote one-sided, divisive political narratives. The Smithsonian Institution should present history in a way that is accurate, balanced, and consistent with the values that make the United States of America exceptional."Among the panels singled out by the White House was a 1920s circus poster described as reflecting "the colonial impulse to claim dominion over the world." Another display reinterpreted the Lone Ranger, comparing the characters relationship with Tonto to U.S. global dominance. A third panel suggested that Mickey Mouses original design in Steamboat Willie drew on traditions of blackface minstrelsy.WHITE HOUSE REVIEWING ALL SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM, EXHIBIT CONTENT BEFORE AMERICA 250 CELEBRATION IN 2026Despite the sharp rhetoric, the letter said the White House sees the review as a constructive process."Our goal is not to interfere with the day-to-day operations of curators or staff, but rather to support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting, and inclusive portrayals of Americas heritage," officials wrote. The timeline requires museums to submit requested materials within 30 days, schedule staff interviews within 75 days, and begin implementing content corrections within 120 days. The corrections, the letter said, should replace "divisive or ideologically driven language with unifying, historically accurate and constructive descriptions."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPWhite House officials closed the letter by presenting the initiative as a collaborative effort with Smithsonian staff. "We view this process as a collaborative and forward-looking opportunity, one that empowers museum staff to embrace a revitalized curatorial vision rooted in the strength, breadth, and achievements of the American story," the letter stated."By focusing on Americanism the people, principles, and progress that define our nation we can work together to renew the Smithsonians role as the worlds leading museum institution."The White House and the Smithsonian did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

BBC forced to correct report claiming Gazan woman died from malnutrition
The BBC was forced to issue another correction on Monday after reporting that a Gazan woman had died from malnutrition, when in fact she was suffering from leukemia. On Sunday, the BBC ran a story headlined "Malnourished Gazan woman flown to Italy dies in hospital." BBC journalist Rachel Muller-Heyndyk reported that the woman "was evacuated to Italy for treatment while severely emaciated," and highlighted, "The UN has warned of widespread malnutrition in Gaza" that has largely been blamed on Israel."The University Hospital of Pisa said that she suffered a cardiac arrest and died on Friday, less than 48 hours after arriving," the initial report said. "The hospital said she had suffered severe loss of weight and muscle, while Italian news agencies reported she was suffering from severe malnutrition."However, the headline was later changed to "Gazan woman flown to Italy dies in hospital" and added that further reporting from both the hospital and Israeli aid officials found a "very complex clinical picture," including that the woman had suffered from leukemia. The BBC published a clarification at the very bottom of the article.BBC MARRED BY RECENT STRING OF RETRACTIONS AND APOLOGIES RELATED TO ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR COVERAGE"This article's headline originally said that Marah Abu Zuhri died of malnutrition, with the introduction stating that she suffered a cardiac arrest and died on Friday," the correction read. "The headline has been amended to remove the reference to malnutrition being the cause of death in what the hospital described as a very complex clinical picture."In a comment to Fox News Digital, a BBC spokesperson said that it was not aware of the womans leukemia before publishing and corrected the headline and subsequent tweet on the story after learning more details."We were not initially aware that Marah Abu Zuhri was being treated for leukemia," the statement read. "In line with usual editorial practice, we added this to the story after the Israeli authorities put the information into the public domain, in what the hospital has described as a very complex clinical picture.' We have amended the original headline and tweet and added an explanatory note."The BBC has had a long history of issuing corrections and apologies regarding its reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, with errors that tend to favor or sympathize with the terrorist organization. The BBC was one of several news organizations that rushed to report false claims made by the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry that Israel had bombed the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, resulting in 500 civilian casualties, shortly after the October 7 terrorist attack. In November 2023, the BBC apologized after misquoting a Reuters report and distorting a quote by an IDF spokesman claiming the IDF was "targeting people including medical teams as well as Arab speakers" in Gazas Al Shifa hospital. The IDF spokesman had actually said that Arab-speaking soldiers were on the ground to ensure aid made its way to the hospital. The BBC apologized for reporting unproven claims about Israel carrying out "summary executions" of Gaza civilians in January 2024.In February, the BBC apologized after its anchor Nicky Schiller referred to Israeli hostages as "prisoners" on air.BBC NEWS ISSUES ON-AIR APOLOGY FOR FALSE CLAIM ISRAEL TARGETING STAFF AND 'ARAB SPEAKERS' AT GAZA HOSPITALAlso in February, the BBC pulled the documentary "Gaza: How To Survive A Warzone" from its streaming platform after unintentionally profiling a Hamas members 13-year-old son in the film. The BBC issued an apology for being unaware of the connection at the time and added a new note to the film to offer more context. An internal BBC report in July found that the broadcaster breached editorial guidelines for the film after it was learned that three members of the production company Hoyo Films, which produced the film, knew that the boys father was a Hamas official. The probe reprimanded the BBC for not being "sufficiently proactive" with its due diligence ahead of broadcast and admonished it for a "lack of critical oversight of unanswered or partially answered questions" regarding the documentary.Last month, The New York Times also had to issue a note that an emaciated child displayed on the front page as evidence of famine in Gaza was not "born healthy" as reported, but was actually suffering from a preexisting condition unrelated to the conflict with Israel.

Tired of Democracy dying: Newsom redistricting push faces GOP backlash over voter rights
California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsoms redistricting effort is receiving pushback from Republicans in the state assembly who are accusing the Democrats of keeping them in the dark and of "disenfranchising Californians."GOP Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo, vice chair of the California State Assembly Committee on Elections, slammed Democrats for giving her "barely 24 hours" to examine the redistricting bill before a Tuesday hearing while Democrats, she claimed, had advance notice.Macedo vowed to defeat the redistricting push, saying, "We are in the super-minority, but we are effective, and we will defeat this."She added that by the time she received the bills language as vice chair of the elections committee, several Democratic co-authors signed on. That, she argued, meant Democrats had a first look, while she had "barely 24 hours before committee tomorrow to prepare."CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS SUE TO STOP NEWSOM, DEMOCRATS FROM PUSHING REDISTRICTING PLANMacedo warned that witnesses appearing at Tuesday's hearing could face legal consequences if they refused to answer her questions."Let me warn anybody who will be testifying tomorrow. If you don't answer my questions tomorrow, attorneys will be making sure you answer them in a courtroom," she said, adding, "You can run, but you cannot hide."Despite Democrats dominating California politics, Macedo pledged, "We are not backing down from this fight.""You are disenfranchising Californians, and we are tired of democracy dying here," she said. "We will fight back."She added that if Republicans are not able to stop the redistricting plans in the assembly, then their victory will be "in a courtroom or it will be at the ballot box."NEWSOM-BACKED HIGH-SPEED RAIL 'BOONDOGGLE' HIT WITH NEW HOUSE INVESTIGATIONFour GOP state lawmakers have filed a lawsuit in California's Supreme Court to stop the Democrat-controlled legislature from holding a vote by the end of this week to advance the redistricting push.Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez, one of the four Republicans behind the suit, told Fox News Digital that she joined the lawsuit because "Californians have already spoken clearly at the ballot box.""In 2008, voters approved Proposition 11 to take redistricting power away from politicians and give it to an independent citizens commission," she said. "Two years later, with Proposition 20, voters doubled down and expanded that power to include congressional districts, passing it by a decisive 61% to 39%. Governor Newsoms plan is a direct attempt to undo that mandate and put politicians back in control. Im standing up because this isnt about partisan advantage; its about respecting the will of the voters who demanded fairness and transparency."Newsom announced he would advance a redistricting map in California to counter the Texas redistricting bill being pushed by President Donald Trump. On Friday, California Democrats and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) released a new district map that would likely eliminate five GOP congressional seats, theoretically nullifying the five additional seats Republicans would gain if Texas redistricting push is successful.HERE ARE THE 5 GOP HOUSE SEATS THAT COULD BE WIPED OUT WITH NEWSOM'S CALIFORNIA REDISTRICTING PLANThe California legislature introduced a constitutional amendment on Monday to be brought to a referendum vote in November. If passed by California voters, the amendment would allow the legislature to temporarily suspend its nonpartisan districting commission and move forward with its redistricting plans as laid out by the DCCC.Newsoms office declined Fox News Digitals request for comment, with a spokesperson saying he would "point you to the Legislature given this is about the legislative process."Fox News Digital also reached out to the office of Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, a Democrat, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill reveals he considered leaving the US when Trump won re-election
"Star Wars" actor Mark Hamill revealed to a U.K. newspaper that President Donald Trumps election nearly convinced him to leave America, telling his wife their options were moving to London or Ireland.Hamill is known for playing Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" films and for voicing the Joker in many "Batman" adaptations. He is also one of Hollywoods most outspoken liberal actors, a fact The Times' contributing editor Matt Rudd observed amid his lengthy interview."Today he fights not with a lightsaber but with a keyboard," Rudd wrote. "Having left Facebook because he was mad at Zuckerberg and Twitter because he was mad at Musk, he now expresses his horror at the state of America via Bluesky.HARRISON FORD LAMENTS 'RICH GET RICHER AND POOR GET POORER' IN CRITIQUE OF TRUMP PRESIDENCY"I avoid mentioning Trump until the end of our conversation because its a subject that risks hijacking an entire afternoon. Sure enough, my late request for Hamills state of the union results in a lengthy monologue."During the extensive interview with the British daily newspaper, Hamill was candid about the struggles he endured after Trump won the election in November. He was an outspoken supporter of then-President Joe Biden and also supported former Vice President Kamala Harris as Biden's appointed successor for the Democratic Party's nomination. The reality of the Trump administration, he says, is only something he can cope with by imagining it as a political thriller."The bullying, the incompetence, the people in place. The only way I can deal with it without going crazy and wanting to open my veins in a warm tub is to look at it like a thick, sprawling political novel," the "Star Wars" actor said."Its entertaining in a way because this could actually be the end. Our status in the world has been crippled, and that will reverberate for decades. Making Canada a 51st state? Do you know how offensive that is? And then taking over Greenland and renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The distractions are hilarious."'STAR WARS' ACTOR MARK HAMILL WEIGHS IN ON KAMALA HARRIS' CHANCES OF VICTORY"I still believe there are more honest, decent people than there are the MAGA crowd," he says. "If I didnt, Id move back to England."The actor noted he indeed considered moving elsewhere in the English-speaking world as other famous liberal actors have done. The Times noted that "when Trump was re-elected, [Hamill] gave his wife a choice: London or Ireland.""Shes very clever," Hamill said, recalling the conversation. "She didnt respond right away, but a week later she said, Im surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country. That son of a b----, I thought. Im not leaving."Fox News Digital reached out to the White House, and a spokeswoman blasted the actor."Since Mark has decided to stay in the United States, he will get to enjoy the many wins President Trump is securing for the American people and really, who can blame him for seconding guessing a plan to move to the same place as Rosie ODonnell," a White House spokeswoman replied.
