Lawsuits threaten to upend Alligator Alcatraz operations
The Trump administrations migrant detention center in the Everglades has become the subject of two lawsuits, which are threatening to derail the facilitys operations as the government employs novel tactics to crack down on immigration enforcement. The new facility, nicknamed Alligator Alcatraz, is facing allegations that its hundreds of detainees are unable to properly communicate with lawyers, did not have access to an immigration court until recently and are living in inhumane conditions.A second lawsuit alleges that the makeshift detention center, made up of tents and trailers and surrounded by wetlands and wildlife, is also being built unlawfully within a sensitive habitat for endangered species.TRUMP SAYS ONLY WAY OUT OF ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ IS DEPORTATIONThe American Civil Liberties Union, which brought the first complaint on behalf of several detained migrants, saw a small setback Monday night when Judge Rodolfo Ruiz said its claims should have been brought in the Middle District of Florida rather than in the Southern District.Ruiz, a Trump appointee, said the case must be transferred to that district, finding that the alleged violations occurred at the facility, which is located in Collier County, about 50 miles from Miami. The ACLU, along with other groups, argued in their lawsuit that some detainees were not given the ability to communicate confidentially with an attorney and that up until recently, the Trump administration had not designated any immigration court as having jurisdiction over the detained migrants, of which there were about 700.SELF-DEPORT OR END UP IN 'ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ,' NOEM WARNS MIGRANTS DURING TRUMP VISIT"This is an unprecedented situation where hundreds of detainees are held incommunicado, with no ability to access the courts, under legal authority that has never been explained and may not exist," the plaintiffs' attorneys wrote.Although not part of their legal claims, the attorneys said their clients were being held in "harsh and inhumane conditions" that included one meal per day, no access to daily showers, excessive force by guards and a lack of medical care. They are "kept around the clock in a cage inside a tent," the attorneys said. The Department of Homeland Security, which is working in coordination with the state of Florida to build Alligator Alcatraz, disputed claims by detainees of poor conditions."Here are the facts: Alligator Alcatraz does meet federal detention standards," DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said. "All detainee facilities are clean. Any allegations of inhumane conditions are FALSE. When will the media stop peddling hoaxes about illegal alien detention centers and start focusing on American victims of illegal alien crime?"Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, has said the facility is designed to be temporary and a means of alleviating the burden on other detention centers. DeSantis has said he hopes Alligator Alcatraz, which was constructed on an airport, will be a "force multiplier" for Trump's aggressive deportation agenda. In a separate case, Judge Kathleen Williams, an Obama appointee, is considering whether Alligator Alcatraz should be halted for violating the National Environmental Policy Act.Williams placed a 14-day hold on all construction of the facility, but that order is set to expire Aug. 21. The judge vowed to issue another order by that date, saying the temporary harm to the government caused by pausing construction was not as great as the harm that would be caused if she found a lack of compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

One of the most difficult things I have ever done," Meyer said in a tease for his podcast, "The Triple Option.""That same group went 12-0 and was unable to play for the national championship of college football."NCAA HAMMERS MICHIGAN WITH HEFTY FINES, SUSPENSIONS OVER SIGN-STEALING SCHEMEMeyer agreed with the NCAAs decision not to punish Michigans players for something they didnt do, but still criticized the NCAA."The recent NCAA ruling to not punish players that werent involved is correct. Little League World Series player calls out Shohei Ohtani as 'not really humble' after encounter
Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani might be a global baseball icon, but not in the eyes of one Little League World Series player.Australias Monica Arcuri revealed an interaction with Ohtani that led her to believe he is "not really humble."Arcuri was featured on ESPNs "Sunday Night Baseball" KidsCast during the New York Mets-Seattle Mariners game Sunday in Williamsport, Pa., the host city of the Little League World Series. During her interview, the Brisbane native described attending a Los Angeles Angels game in Anaheim in 2023.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMDuring that game, Ohtani then still a member of the Angels homered off Toronto Blue Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi."He hit a home run into an area where the fans couldnt go, and then this guy got the ball and gave it to my brother," Arcuri explained on the broadcast. "So, the next day we went to the VIP box at the front, and I asked for [Ohtanis] signature, but all he gave me was a side-eye and not a nice glance.ANGELS' ZACH NETO SNARES SHOHEI OHTANI'S LINER TO START INCREDIBLE TRIPLE PLAY"So, after that, Ive never liked him ever since. Hes not really humble. Not my style."That season was Ohtanis last in an Angels uniform before the Dodgers swooped in with a then-record 10-year, $700 million contract, though $680 million of it was deferred.Ohtanis first season with the Dodgers ended with an NL MVP Award and a World Series ring after defeating the New York Yankees in five games in the "Fall Classic."However, Ohtani has faced off-the-field controversies since last season.First, his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was imprisoned for stealing nearly $17 million from the Japanese star to pay off gambling debts.Ohtani publicly addressed the scandal in late March before the start of his inaugural Dodgers season, saying he had never placed a sports bet and that Mizuharas story about paying off his $4.5 million gambling debt was fabricated.More recently, Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, made headlines after being sued by a Hawaii real estate investor and broker for allegedly causing their firing from a $240 million luxury housing development.Meanwhile, it appears Arcuri enjoyed her time in Williamsport despite Australia being eliminated from the international bracket after a 12-0 loss to Canada on Sunday. National Guard troops from six red states head to DC to help tackle crime
Just more than one week after President Donald Trump unveiled plans to deploy troops from the D.C. National Guard and to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department to tackle crime in Washington, six states have pledged to send in their own National Guard troops to pitch in with the effort. Now, National Guard troops from Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee are joining in on the Trump administrations crackdown in Washington. Altogether, more than 2,000 National Guard troops are currently slated to participate in the Trump administrations effort to address crime in the nations capital, and roughly 1,300 already have arrived in Washington. As of Tuesday, approximately 500 West Virginia National Guard soldiers are in Washington where they are being briefed on their mission, a U.S. Army official told Fox News. Once training concludes, they are slated to join the D.C. National Guard in "supporting the mission as it currently exists," the official said.400 NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS DESCEND UPON DC; EXPANDED CRIME CRACKDOWN EXPECTED WEDNESDAY NIGHTOn Monday, governors from Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana announced they would also dispatch National Guard troops from their respective states. Mississippi pledged 200 troops, Tennessee said it would send 160 troops, and Louisiana said it would deploy 135 troops.Additionally, South Carolina said it would dispatch 200 troops, and Ohio said it plans to deploy 150 to support Trumps mission. The states said that they were responding to requests from the Department of the Army to assist the D.C. National Guard."We have been asked by the Secretary of the Army to send 150 military police from the Ohio National Guard to support the District of Columbia National Guard," Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, said in a Saturday statement. "These Ohio National Guard members will carry out presence patrols and serve as added security.None of these military police members are currently serving as law enforcement officers in the state of Ohio."DEFENSE SECRETARY PETE HEGSETH VOWS TO BE 'FORCE MULTIPLIERS' OF DC POLICEThe White House said that the National Guard troops will protect federal assets and provide a "safe environment" for law enforcement officials, and will "provide a visible presence to deter crime.""President Trump appreciates and welcomes additional assistance from local and state officials that want to join the operation to protect our cherished capital from dangerous criminals," a White House official said in a statement to Fox News Digital Tuesday. "As part of President Trumps ongoing effort to make DC safe and beautiful, additional National Guard troops may be called in to Washington DC the National Guards role has not changed."The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital on why National Guard troops from other states are joining the D.C. National Guard.Trump initially floated federalizing Washingtons Metropolitan Police Department and sending National Guard troops to confront crime in Washington Aug. 6, following the assault of a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer.Days later, he announced that he would activate approximately 800 National Guard troops, and would take over the Metropolitan Police Department to address crime in Washington."I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, D.C.," Trump told reporters at an Aug. 11 press conference. "And they're going to be allowed to do their job properly."While a temporary federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department is authorized for emergency situations, Washington officials filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administrations move Friday.TRUMP ACTIVATES NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO ADDRESS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL CRIME IN WASHINGTON"By illegally declaring a takeover of MPD, the Administration is abusing its temporary, limited authority under the law," Washington Attorney General Brian Schwalb wrote in a Friday X post. "This is the gravest threat to Home Rule DC has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it."Meanwhile, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser suggested that the Trump administration wasnt interested in deploying troops to fight crime in the city, but rather, advance the Trump administrations mass deportation agenda."I think it makes the point that this is not about D.C. crime," Bowser said Sunday. "The focus should be on violent crime. ... Nobody is against focusing on driving down any level of violence. And so if this is really about immigration enforcement, the administration should make that plain."Fox News Liz Friden and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
