People with multiple sclerosis (MS) may show warning signs long before classic symptoms appear and mental health concerns could be among the first red flags, according to new research.A University of British Columbia (UBC) study, published last week in JAMA Network Open, examined the medical records of 2,038 patients with the autoimmune disease and compared them to 10,182 patients without it.The researchers found that future MS patients had elevated rates of mental health-related issues, psychiatrist and general practice visits, and complaints of vague symptoms such as fatigue and pain all as early as 15 years before the onset of clear symptoms.MAKING THESE 11 LIFESTYLE CHANGES COULD WARD OFF ALZHEIMER'S, EXPERT SAYS"These findings suggest that MS may begin much earlier than previously recognized, with mental healthrelated issues as early indicators," the researchers wrote.MS, which attacks the protective myelin coating around nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, affects about one million adults in the U.S., according to Cleveland Clinic.While there is no known cause or cure, treatment can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease, which can cause muscle weakness, vision changes, numbness and memory issues.Previous research has shown that in the five to 10 years leading up to an MS diagnosis, people typically seek medical attention more frequently for headaches, fatigue, sleep disorders, pain, gastrointestinal issues and psychiatric concerns, the researchers wrote.ALWAYS RUNNING LATE? A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION COULD BE TO BLAME, EXPERTS SAYThe UBC study, however, tracked physician visits in the 25 years leading up to the onset of symptoms in MS patients in British Columbia.They found a steady uptick in general practice visits starting 15 years out, followed by more frequent trips to psychiatrists beginning 12 years before symptoms.Neurology and ophthalmology visits increased eight to nine years prior, likely due to blurred vision or eye pain, two common early symptoms of MS.Three to five years before onset, emergency room and radiology visits rose sharply. Across nearly every specialty, physician visits peaked in the year before symptoms began.Psychiatrist consultations, in particular, skyrocketed 159% before MS onset, and mental health visits increased 76%, according to the research.The increase in psychiatric visits may correlate to the earliest stages of MS-related immune dysregulation, as higher levels of certain inflammation-related chemicals and problems with the blood-brain barrier can affect mood, the researchers noted.While most people who experience mental health issues, fatigue and headaches do not develop MS, the researchers said that recognizing and characterizing the "prodromal phase" the early period marked by subtle symptoms could speed up diagnosis and improve outcomes.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER"Mental health and psychiatric-related issues may be among the earliest features of the prodromal phase of MS, preceding nervous system-related symptoms and neurologist visits by several years," senior author Dr. Helen Tremlett, professor of neurology at UBC, told Fox News Digital."This suggests that in the future, there may be an opportunity to recognize and manage MS early, maximizing mental health and brain reserve," she said.The findings also open "new avenues for research into early biomarkers, lifestyle factors and other potential triggers that may be at play during this previously overlooked phase of the disease," the researcher added.Monitoring for early warning signs could also potentially help to detect other brain diseases, like Alzheimers or ALS, and ensure early intervention, Tremlett noted.For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/healthBetween 2016 and 2021, MS cases increased globally from about 2.2 million to as many as 2.9 million, according to research published in July in the journal Frontiers in Neurology.The disease has gained public attention in recent years as celebrities like Selma Blair, Christina Applegate and Montel Williams have shared their experiences of living with MS.

Crowds on Demand CEO Adam Swart told "Fox & Friends" on Friday that his company has received 400% more paid protester requests this year than during the same period last year.Fox News' Lawrence B. Jones asked the Crowds on Demand CEO how much the paid protesters that he curates for political protests typically make for their services."We don't comment on specific protests, but generally the range can be from the low hundreds, the low one hundreds, into a few hundred," he told Jones. "It really depends on the location, the duration and any challenges, for example, cold weather or early morning. You guys at 'Fox & Friends' know all about getting up early in the morning. We tend to pay people more [for] that."DC PAID PROTESTER REQUESTS SURGE 400% AMID TRUMPS FEDERAL TAKEOVER OF CITY POLICE: CROWD COMPANYSwart's company, Crowds on Demand, states on their website that they are "best known for organizing passionate demonstrations, rallies, flash-mobs, corporate PR events, and light-hearted events such as paparazzi, brand ambassadors, and PR stunts."The CEO noted that while there is "a lot of misinformation online" about paid protesters, the individuals employed by Crowds on Demand are only deployed for "peaceful and law-abiding protest," and are focused on "persuasion."When asked by Jones whether protesters are paid on an hourly basis, and how much they are paid per hour, Swart didn't answer the question directly but offered some insight into what circumstances would warrant an increased pay rate."It's hard to give you a specific figure If you're organizing a conservative demonstration in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, that would be a higher pay rate or a left-wing demonstration in rural Mississippi, that would be a higher rate because finding and identifying those people is harder and that might be a more tense environment in those particular locations, as you would imagine," he explained.ADVOCACY GROUP CEO CLAIMS HE WAS OFFERED $20 MILLION TO RECRUIT PROTESTERS FOR ANTI-TRUMP DEMONSTRATIONSJones then asked the CEO whether the people who are being paid to protest at political events are typically aligned with the causes that they are protesting for, or if they're "just out for a paycheck.""They genuinely share these beliefs, and I'll put it this way, right? I'm asking your listeners, your viewers right now, if you got paid a couple hundred dollars, probably mostly your viewers lean conservative, would you guys go to a BLM protest for a couple hundred dollars?" he proposed. "I bet most of your viewers are shouting into their TV screens, No, I would not do that, right?""So whether it's conservative, we provide there's a lot of misinformation that we only work for the left. We work for the left and the right, but always on the side of common sense and generally on the side of the underdog. So, in the sense of right now, we are getting more requests on the federal level from Democrats, as you would imagine. Swart responded, adding that the number of paid protesters requested by either side of the aisle "depends on who's in power."In closing, Swart responded to Jones' critique that paid protesters are helping to create inorganic political demonstrations, and possibly misleading others into thinking that certain movements have more grassroots support than they actually do."The reality is, Lawrence, people have different incentives for coming out there. There's no such thing as a truly organic protest, Lawrence," he stated. "Everybody has a reason for being somewhere, whether they're flexing on Instagram, flexing for politics, staffer, or being compensated. A move this week by the Loudon County, Virginia, school board to continue to support allowing transgender children to use facilities that do not match their biological sex is front-and-center in the state's gubernatorial election."This is absolutely unacceptable," Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican nominee for governor in this year's election, said in a Fox News Digital interview on Thursday. "Our girl children are simply not safe. Are we erasing women now?"The Justice Department in President Donald Trump's administration is demanding that Loudon County's school district repeal the policy, and is threatening to pull $50 million in federal funding if the school board doesn't act by Friday.But the school board, at a meeting Tuesday evening, voted 6-3 to continue to defy the Justice Department by continuing to support Policy 8040, which provides protections for transgender students.VIRGINIA GOVERNOR'S RACE: SPANBERGER UNVEILS EDUCATION PLANThe Justice Department argues that the policy is in violation of Title IX, which is a half-century-old federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funding.Loudon County is one of five northern Virginia school districts that face the Friday deadline, along with Alexandria City Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, Prince William County Public Schools, and Fairfax County Public Schools.POTENTIAL YOUNGKIN SUCCESSOR FOCUSED ON MESSAGE IN TOUGH RACE TO KEEP SWING-STATE 'RED'The Justice Department charges that the school districts' policies, which give students the option to use school bathrooms and locker rooms based on gender identity and not their biological sex, violate Title IX.Sears, pointing to the Republican sweep of statewide offices in Virginia elections four years ago, said that the school districts have "gone rogue and apparently, they have learned no lessons since 2021, when we first ran, and they must not understand that parents still matter."Republican Gov. New York City residents are speaking out after users at a taxpayer-funded "safe injection site" operated by OnPoint have left their neighborhood rife with social dysfunction including public intercourse and defecation.Users at OnPoints East Harlem headquarters have been engaging in lewd antisocial behavior that has left local residents furious, the New York Post reported. One disgusted resident told the outlet he witnessed public sex in broad daylight."The guy was just doing his thing, just looking around, wasnt afraid of anything. I couldnt believe it. I just could not believe it, the guy finished, and he just starts zipping his pants and walking away. And the woman was still bent over wondering what was going on. And then after he got maybe three yards away, she said Hey, hey! Thats it? and he said, Come on! and then she pulled up her pants and ran behind him," the resident said.WATCH: DC HOMELESS WEIGH IN ON TRUMP CLEANING UP CITY STREETSThe East Harlem site, which opened in 2021, provides addicts with clean drug paraphernalia such as needles and pipes, which they can use to imbibe their drug of choice within the confines of the site's walls.Proponents of this so-called "harm reduction" strategy for drug use claim that it saves chronic users from overdoses by providing them a safe setting to use, while critics say the sites enable addicts instead of treating their underlying problems, and merely delay the inevitable.OnPoint boasts that it has prevented 1,800 overdoses since its centers in East Harlem and Washington Heights opened, and the centers budget has ballooned to $17.4 million a year. According to city officials, nearly 6,000 addicts used illegal drugs at the centers 38,000 times in the last year alone.The sites exist in a legal gray area, where theyre permitted by city rules but illegal under state and federal law. The Trump administration is investigating the sites and is planning to take civil or criminal action, according to the New York Post."They have sex in our yards, they defecate behind our cars.
