Training camps opened across the NFL last week. But later this week, the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers will meet in Canton, Ohio, to officially kick off the preseason. On Tuesday, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Trey Lance as the starter for Thursday's exhibition opener. He was considered a healthy scratch for each game that season. The 26-year-old appeared in four games with the Cowboys. He took the field as a starter for one of those games after Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush suffered respective injuries.Lance finished the 2024 season with 266 passing yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. He started his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers.Former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is expected to relieve Lance in Thursday's game. Many NFL teams elect to hold their starters out of the first preseason game. Keeping in line with that approach, Chargers starting quarterback Justin Herbet will sit out on Thursday. The annual Hall of Fame coincides with the induction ceremonies for members of the latest class. It also gives the participating clubs an extra opportunity to evaluate their respective teams. Every other NFL team will play three preseason contests, while the Chargers and Lions will conclude the exhibition season with four games under their belts.Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Manhattan high-rise shooting victims: NYPD officer, Blackstone executive and security guard among those killed
Four people were killed when a gunman stormed into a New York City skyscraper at the end of the business day on Monday. An off-duty New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, a security guard, a Blackstone executive and a Rudin employee were fatally wounded at 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Midtown Manhattan.Authorities said Monday night that a fifth victim had been shot and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The accused gunman identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the building, according to police. The building houses offices for the Blackstone Group, the National Football League (NFL), Rudin Management Company and "Big Four" accounting firm KPMG, among other businesses. The motive remains under investigation.Authorities said Tamura was a Las Vegas resident who last worked an overnight security job at Horseshoe Las Vegas. New York City Mayor Eric Adams told Fox News that NYPD teams are traveling to Las Vegas to conduct a search warrant on Tamura's home and determine how Tamura obtained the AR-15-style rifle used in the shooting. Investigators believe Tamura assembled the gun using a lower receiver purchased by "an associate."NYC GUNMAN APPEARED TO HAVE GRIEVANCE AGAINST NFL, WENT TO WRONG ELEVATOR BANK IN DEADLY RAMPAGE, MAYOR SAYSThe NYPD identified Officer DidarulIslam as among those killed. Islam, 33, of the Bronx, was an immigrant from Bangladesh who worked in the NYPD's 47th Precinct, according to Adams.Islam, who served in the NYPD for about three and a half years, was off-duty at the time of the shooting and was working as a private security guard at the building. His wife is pregnant, soon to give birth to their third child. In a video statement Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said "in an act of senseless violence, we lost a brother, a friend, and an NYPD hero."Islam "was murdered, wearing the uniform respected the world over. Your uniform," she told the force. "Officer Islam's death was yet another reminder of everything you risk just by showing up to work. He knew that risk. He embraced it. He understood what it meant to put the safety of others above his own. Now, we owe it to him and every member of this department to sift through the chaos of yesterday's crime scene and get some answers."NYPD officers lined the streets on Monday night as they carried out a dignified transfer of Islam's body.Islam "put on his uniform and went to work. To protect his city," the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York wrote on X. "To provide for his family. He should have been going home to them tonight.""Instead, we are carrying him on his final journey," the union added, asking for prayers for the victims and their families. "And please pray for the police officers who will carry on protecting this city from the evil we saw tonight."New York City hosted a multi-faith vigil and prayer service in Bryant Park on Tuesday night to honor the victims.Blackstone mourned 43-year-old Wesley LePatner as "a beloved member of the Blackstone family" who "will be sorely missed."She joined the company in 2014 after a decade-long career at Goldman Sachs. A highly-regarded senior executive, she served as Blackstone's Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and the CEO of the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT).LePatner took over as BREIT CEO on Jan. 1 of this year. The $53 billion real estate fund caters to wealthy clients."She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond. She embodied the best of Blackstone," Blackstone said in a statement. "Our prayers are with her husband, children and family. We are also saddened by the loss of the other innocent victims as well, including brave security personnel and NYPD."LePatner, a married mother of two children, was also an active member of the Park East Synagogue in Manhattan. The UJA-Federation of New York, a charitable organization supporting Jewish communities, said LePatner led a "solidarity mission" with UJA to Israel in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, "demonstrating her enduring commitment in Israel's moment of heartache." The organization said she "lived with courage and conviction, instilling in her two children a deep love for Judaism and the Jewish people.""We are all mourning the loss of such an extraordinary person and extend our heartfelt condolences to her entire family," UJA added.LePatner met her husband, Evan LePatner, during their freshman year at Yale University. He is a managing partner at the private equity firm Courizon Partners.BLACKSTONE IDENTIFIES EMPLOYEE KILLED IN NYC SHOOTINGThe Service Employees International Union (SEIU) identified one of its members, Aland Etienne, as one of the shooting victims killed. The union remembered Etienne as "a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously.""We have been in touch with Aland Etiennes family and are working with building management and the NYPD to support their investigation," 32BJ SEIU, which is the largest property service workers' union in the country, said in a statement. "We are ensuring our members in the building receive the free union counseling and support services they deserve and need to manage this unspeakable loss.""This tragedy speaks to the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers and our buildings safe," the union added. "Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such."Etiennes brother, Gathmand Etienne, also released a statement on social media."My family suffered a heartbreaking tragedy. My brother, Aland, lost his life in the shooting that happened in New York while he was at work," he wrote on Facebook. "He was more than a brother he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives. Our hearts are shattered, and were asking for your prayers and strength as we navigate this painful time.""Rest in peace, Brother. Youll never be forgotten," he added.Rudin Management Company said that one of its employees reportedly a graduate of Cornell University just five years out of college was killed in the shooting. Her family has asked for privacy."The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday's senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost last night, including our cherished Rudin colleague, a brave New York City police officer, a beloved lobby security guard and an employee at a tenant firm," the company said in a statement. "We are grateful to the NYPD, FBI, EMS and multiple other emergency responders for their swift and courageous action."The company also thanked the mayor and the police commissioner for "their leadership" and said the building would remain closed Tuesday as the authorities continue their investigations."As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured," Rudin added. At a press conference Monday, the NYPD commissioner detailed how multiple 911 calls came in at approximately 6:28 p.m. to report an active shooter inside 345 Park Avenue.Tamura exited a double-parked black BMW with Nevada plates on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets, carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand, Tisch said. The building's security camera footage showed the gunman enter the lobby, turn right, and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer. He then shot a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeded through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire, according to the police commissioner.Video shows him making his way to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk, police said. Tisch said an additional male the hospitalized survivor was shot in the lobby.Police said the shooter then called the elevator, which opens in the lobby. "A female exited that elevator, and he allowed her to walk past him unharmed," Tisch said. The shooter then went to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management is located, and began to walk around and fire rounds. One person was struck and killed on that floor, police said.Tisch said the gunman proceeded down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.Investigators believe Tamura's vehicle traveled cross-country through Colorado on July 26, then through Nebraska and Iowa on July 27. The vehicle was spotted in Columbia, New Jersey, around 4:24 p.m. Monday before it entered New York City.Tisch said law enforcement partners in Las Vegas reported that Tamura had "a documented mental health history."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPAdams said investigators were analyzing a suicide note in which Tamura expressed his belief that he experienced chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., and voiced grievances with the NFL.Tisch said the gunman allegedly wrote "study my brain" in the note. Adams said that Tamura likely wanted to target the NFL office but took the wrong elevator bank. Tamura played football in high school in Los Angeles County but never in the NFL.Fox News' Brooke Taylor, Leonard Balducci and Terrence Kenny contributed to this report.

Browns owner reveals team wasn't considering drafting Shedeur Sanders until last-day conversation
Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam spoke about the process that resulted in the team drafting Shedeur Sanders in April.Haslam suggested the team had no intention of drafting Sanders after the controversial quarterback shockingly fell out of third round on April 25. But Haslam said that changed the next day, the final day of the draft, after a conversation among team brass."If you had told me Friday night [Day 2 of the NFL Draft], driving home, Yall are gonna pick Shedeur, I would have said, Thats not happening," Haslam said Tuesday. "But we had a conversation early that morning [Day 3], and we had a conversation later that day, and we had the right people involved in that conversation."CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMHaslam also claims that it was team general manager Andrew Berry who made the decision to draft Sanders."At the end of the day, thats [general manager] Andrew Berrys call. Andrew made the call to pick Shedeur. Just like whos gonna start or what play were gonna call is [head coach] Kevin [Stefanski]s call. But thats Andrews call. He made the call."Sanders, who was projected by some experts to contend for the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after last year's college football season, ended up falling all the way to the 144th pick when Browns finally took him off the board.AARON RODGERS OFFERS OLIVE BRANCH TO TERRY BRADSHAW AFTER LEGENDARY QB'S HARSH WORDSBerry told reporters after the selection that it "wasn't the plan" to take a second quarterback after Cleveland took Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel with an earlier pick."It wasn't necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks, but, you know, as we talk about, we do believe in best player available. We do believe in positional value. And we didn't necessarily expect him to be available in the fifth round," Berry said at an April 26 press conference."So, we love adding competition to every position room. So, adding him to compete with the other guys who are already in there, that was the appropriate thing to do."Sanders' presence on the Browns has already been marred by controversy after he was twice cited for speeding.Sanders was first ticketed for going 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. Two weeks later, he went 101 in a 60 and failed to appear in court. The rookie quarterback addressed those traffic tickets while appearing at teammate David Njokus charity softball game last month."I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them," Sanders said. "I made some, you know, not great choices I learned."Berry criticized Sanders for the incidents last week."Not smart. Just not smart," Berry told reporters this week about the tickets. "Its something that weve addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications. He understands the consequences. Its not just about yourself. Its not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, its just dangerous."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X,and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Pete Buttigieg acknowledges 'fairness issues' with trans athletes in women's sports
Prominent Democrat and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg weighed in on the debate about transgender athletes competing in women's sports.During an interview with NPR, Buttigieg acknowledged "fairness issues" in the debate."Around sports, I think most reasonable people would recognize that there are serious fairness issues if you just treat this as not mattering when a trans athlete wants to compete in womens sports," Buttigieg said.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe Democrat then agreed that parents who have complained about trans athletes competing against their daughters "have a case." However, Buttigieg also argued that politicians shouldn't be dictating policy to determine whether males can compete in women's and girls sports."And thats why I think these decisions should be in the hands of sports leagues and school boards and not politicians in Washington trying to use this as a political pawn," Buttigieg said.HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE"Chess is different from weightlifting, and weightlifting is different from volleyball and middle school is different from the Olympics. So, thats exactly why I think that we shouldnt be grandstanding on this as politicians. We should be empowering communities and organizations and schools to make the right decisions."Democrats, including former President Joe Biden, have advocated for policy changes that would allow trans athletes to compete in women's and girls sports. Biden passed an executive order on his first day in office in January 2021 that said "Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports."Democrats in Congress also tried to pass the Transgender Bill of Rights and the Equality Act, both of which would have allowed trans athletes to compete in girls and women's sports.President Donald Trump signed the "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" executive order Feb. 5, and 27 states have passed their own laws to ensure similar restrictions.Buttigieg joins several other prominent Democrats and media pundits who have spoken out against allowing males to compete with females, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom; Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.; and HBO host Bill Maher. An April report by The New York Times claims that Biden did not agree with trans athletes participating in women's and girls sports."According to a number of former Biden-administration officials, there remained a simmering debate inside the administration about whether those Title IX protections should extend to sports," the Times reported,. "One side maintained that there was no legal difference between letting trans students use bathrooms that align with their gender identity and letting trans student athletes play on sports teams that align with their gender identity."However, Biden was "on the other side who believed that the competitive, zero-sum nature of sports made them different from bathrooms that some transgender athletes would enjoy unfair physical advantages over women. Most important, one of the officials holding this view was Biden himself."A New York Times/Ipsos survey found the vast majority of Americans, including a majority of Democrats, don't think transgender athletes should be permitted to compete in women's sports."Thinking about transgender female athletes meaning athletes who were male at birth but who currently identify as female do you think they should or should not be allowed to compete in womens sports?" the survey asked.Of the 2,128 people who participated, 79% said biological males who identify as women should not be allowed to participate in women's sports.Of the 1,025 people who identified as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% said transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete with women.Other data suggests the issue affected the outcome of the 2024 election.Anational exit poll conducted by the Concerned Women for America (CWA) legislative action committee found that 70% of moderate voters saw the issue of "Donald Trumps opposition to transgender boys and men playing girls' and womens sports and of transgender boys and men using girls' and womens bathrooms" as important to them. And 6% said it was the most important issue of all, while 44% said it was "very important."Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Fox News Poll: Voters support a third political party, but not if its Elon Musks
Elon Musks talk of a third political party is an idea supported by more than half of voters in the latest Fox News national survey as long as that party isnt linked to the billionaire.By an 11-point margin, more voters think it is a good idea rather than a bad one for there to be a third major party (53% vs. 42%). Thats down from a 27-point spread in 2010, the most recent time Fox asked the question.Independents by a 44-point margin and Democrats by 20 points say a third party is a good idea while Republicans think its a bad one by 9 points. FOX NEWS POLL: SUPPORT FOR DEPORTATION DEPENDS ON WHO IS BEING TARGETEDThe decline from 2010 is mostly because of a 22-point shift among Republicans, who were 13 points more likely to say it was a good idea (50%) than a bad one (37%) 15 years ago."In 2010, anger and disappointment with both parties among some Republicans and independents fueled the tea party movement," says Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who helps conduct the Fox News survey with Democrat Chris Anderson. "This time around the disappointment and anger is coming from the Democrats."Voters draw the line, however, at a third party led by Musk. Most, 75%, say they are "not very" or "not at all" open to supporting a party created by the billionaire, while 22% say they are "extremely" or "very" open to it.Those most likely to back a Musk political party are men (31% extremely/very open), especially Republican men (41%), men under age 45 (38%), and White men without a college degree (36%).Independents (32% extremely/very open) and Republicans (31%) are roughly 20 points more likely than Democrats (11%) to support a Musk-run party.FOX NEWS POLL: THE GOP IS SEEN AS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A CLEAR PLAN FOR THE COUNTRYSome support for a third major party comes from voter dissatisfaction with both major parties, as 64% think the Democratic Party lacks a clear plan for dealing with the problems facing the country and 54% say the same about the GOP.The survey also asks voters to respond to a series of agree-disagree statements about third parties and finds they are equally likely to view them positively as negatively. For example, 6 in 10 voters agree third parties are desperately needed because the Democratic and Republican parties are failing to address voter concerns (61% agree), while another 6 in 10 think third-party candidates are just spoilers that distract from the two major parties (59%).Democrats (59% agree) and Republicans (66%) are more likely to agree third-party candidates are spoilers while independents feel the opposite (60% disagree).Majorities of independents (76% agree) and Democrats (67%) are in alignment on needing a new party, whereas Republicans are split (49% agree third parties are needed, 50% do not).About 4 voters in 10 feel third-party candidates tend to be less qualified than those from the two major parties (54% disagree). More Republicans (51% agree) than Democrats (41%) and independents (33%) think a third party is not suitable to run.Voters are more decisive when asked if the U.S. political system is rigged against third parties as 70% feel it is, including most Democrats (73%), Republicans (66%), and independents (76%)."The survey shows the dilemma for third parties in the U.S.," says Shaw. "Voters want another choice, but dont particularly like the options theyve seen and are reluctant to back candidates they think are doomed."CLICK HERE FOR CROSSTABS AND TOPLINEConducted July 18-21, 2025, under the direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News survey includes interviews with a sample of 1,000 registered voters randomly selected from a national voter file. Respondents spoke with live interviewers on landlines (114) and cellphones (636) or completed the survey online after receiving a text (250). Results based on the full sample have a margin of sampling error of 3 percentage points. Sampling error for results among subgroups is higher. In addition to sampling error, question wording and order can influence results. Weights are generally applied to age, race, education, and area variables to ensure the demographics of respondents are representative of the registered voter population. Sources for developing weight targets include the American Community Survey, Fox News Voter Analysis and voter file data.

Democrat policies paved way for brutal Cincinnati attack, say Ohio Republicans: 'Fear and chaos'
Republican members of Ohio's congressional delegation say Democratic policies created societal conditions that led to a violent beating in downtown Cincinnati that went viral online."Name one major city in America where you'd feel safe letting your kids walk alone. You can't, and that should alarm every one of us," Rep. Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, told Fox News Digital on Tuesday."For too long, we've accepted fear and chaos as normal while left-wing politicians push sanctuary cities, slash police funding, and let violent criminals and the mentally ill roam the streets. This isn't compassion. It's failure."Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, called for Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval's resignation over the incident.CINCINNATI MAYORAL CANDIDATE, VP VANCE'S HALF-BROTHER, SLAMS CITY LEADERSHIP AFTER BRUTAL BEATDOWN"It's a heinous attack. The mayor of Cincinnati is a disgrace," Moreno said. When asked what could be done to stop such incidents, he said, "Have the mayor resign. Have a congressman that actually cares about his district, and fund the police in Cincinnati."Fox News Digital reached out to the mayor's office for comment, as well as the office of Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, whose congressional district includes Cincinnati. It comes after a video lit up social media over the weekend that appeared to show a mob of people violently attacking one man, and a woman who tried to help him.CINCINNATI POLICE CHIEF SAYS OUT OF 100 PEOPLE WATCHING AND RECORDING VIOLENT ATTACK, ONLY 1 CALLED 911Pureval issued a statement condemning the "vicious fight" and pledging that arrests were "forthcoming."Fox 19 Cincinnati reported Monday that five people had been charged. But Rulli and Moreno are two of the latest Republican officials from Ohio to comment on the beating that took place on Saturday.Vice President JD Vance, who served in the Senate before being elected to the White House with President Donald Trump, said Monday that Moreno showed him a video of the violence."Its disgusting. I hope every single one of those people who engaged in violence is prosecuted to the full extent of the law," Vance said during an event in Canton, Ohio."When you have a grown man sucker-punching a middle-aged woman, that person ought to go to jail for a very long time. And frankly, he is lucky there werent some better people around because they would handle it themselves Weve had way too much lawlessness on the streets of great American cities."The details of what started the fight, and who initiated the aggression, are still unclear.
