    Your phone predicts an earthquake
I read a geeky article that I think youll also find amazing.Google quietly used its Android operating system to turn billions of phones into the largest earthquake detection network in human history.Your Android phone can warn you about an earthquake before the shaking even starts. But your phones accelerometer (yep, the same sensor that knows when you turn your phone sideways) can detect those waves. When enough Android phones in the same area sense the same motion, Googles system kicks in and sends early alerts to people who are about to get hit by the stronger, slower S-waves. Those are the ones that cause damage. This gives you 15 to 60 seconds of warning. Not much time, but enough to move away from windows, duck under a desk or stop that ladder climb. Seconds matter when the ground starts rolling.IF YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT THESE VIDEO TOOLS, YOURE ALREADY BEHINDAccording to a study inScience, the Android-based earthquake detection network caught over 11,000 real earthquakes between 2021 and 2024.It covers 98 countries and pushes out around 18 million alerts a month. In some cases, people had over a minutes notice before the shaking started. Trump pick Emil Bove confirmed as federal judge after furious Democrat walkout, whistleblower complaints
The Senate confirmed President Donald Trumps nominee Emil Bove as a federal judge Tuesday, handing a controversial leader at the Department of Justice a lifetime role on a powerful appellate court.Bove was narrowly confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit in a 50-49 vote with no support from Democrats. His confirmation followed a contentious weeks-long vetting process that included three whistleblower complaints and impassioned outside figures voicing both support and opposition to his nomination.Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said from the Senate floor before the vote that he supported Bove and believed the nominee had been the target of "unfair accusations and abuse.""He has a strong legal background and has served his country honorably. I believe he will be a diligent, capable, and fair jurist," Grassley said.Boves ascension to the appellate court marks a peak in his legal career. He started out as a high-achieving student, college athlete and Georgetown University law school graduate. He went on to clerk for two federal judges and worked for about a decade as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, leading high-profile terrorism and drug trafficking cases through 2019.TOP DOJ OFFICIAL FACES TEST IN SENATE OVER NOMINATION TO BECOME FEDERAL JUDGEAlongside Todd Blanche, now a deputy attorney general, Bove led Trumps personal defense team during the president's criminal prosecutions. Blanche told Fox News Digital in an interview last month that Bove was a "brilliant lawyer" who authored the vast majority of their legal briefs for Trump's cases. In a letter to the Senate, attorney Gene Schaerr called Boves brief writing "superb."Bove will leave behind his job as principal associate deputy attorney general at the DOJ. Attorney General Pam Bondi congratulated him in a statement."This is a GREAT day for our country," Bondi wrote on X. "I cannot thank Emil enough for his tireless work and support at @TheJusticeDept. He will be missed and he will be an outstanding judge."Two Republicans, Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, voted against Bove.Democrats and some who crossed paths with Bove during his time in New York and at DOJ headquarters fiercely opposed his nomination and said he was unqualified.KEY TRUMP NOMINEES STALLED BY SENATE DEMS PUT PRESSURE ON GOP LEADERSOne whistleblower, Erez Reuveni, had become a successful prosecutor at the DOJ over the last 15 years when he was fired under Boves watch. Reuveni said he was party to a meeting in March in which Bove floated defying any court orders that would hinder one of Trumps most legally questionable deportation plans, a claim Bove denies. Reuveni also said the culture at the DOJ, particularly during the most intense moments of immigration lawsuits, involved misleading federal judges and was like nothing he had experienced during his tenure, which included Trump's first term. Two other anonymous whistleblowers emerged at the eleventh hour during the confirmation process and vouched for Reuvenis claims.A spokeswoman for Grassley told Fox News Digital the third whistleblower only brought claims to Senate Democrats and did not attempt to engage with Grassley. Grassleys staff eventually met with the whistleblowers lawyers after the chairman's office reached out, the spokeswoman said.Grassley said his staff interviewed more than a dozen people to vet the initial whistleblower claims and could not find evidence that Bove urged staff to defy the courts."Even if you accept most of the claims as true, theres no scandal," Grassley said. "Government lawyers aggressively litigating and interpreting court orders isnt misconductits what lawyers do."While in New York, Bove also alienated some colleagues. In 2018, a band of defense lawyers said in emails reported by The Associated Press that Bove could not "be bothered to treat lesser mortals with respect or empathy." Another lawyer who had interactions with Bove in New York told Fox News Digital he was a "bully" who browbeat people.TRUMP CONSIDERS FORMER DEFENSE ATTORNEY EMIL BOVE FOR FEDERAL APPEALS COURT VACANCYA group that opposes Bove's nomination, Justice Connection, published a letter signed by more than 900 former DOJ employees calling for the Senate to reject Bove's nomination.Among their concerns was that Bove led the controversial dismissal of Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams' federal corruption charges. Several DOJ officials resigned in protest over Bove's orders to toss out the charges. In the letter, the former employees said Bove has been "trampling over institutional norms" and that he lacked impartiality.Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, in an unusual move, staged a walkout at a hearing on Bove before a recent vote to advance his nomination. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called him a "henchman," a description Democrats have widely adopted for him."He's the extreme of the extreme," Schumer told reporters. "He's not a jurist. He's a Trumpian henchman. That seems to be the qualification for appointees these days."Bove defended himself against critics during his confirmation hearing."I am not anybodys henchman. Im not an enforcer," Bove said. "Im a lawyer from a small town who never expected to be in an arena like this."Fox News' Alex Miller contributed to this report.

Political analyst says Democrats are already worried about the 'big problem' of winning back voters for 2028
Author and political analyst Mark Halperin said Tuesday Democrats are worried about the 2028 election after seeing record-low approval ratings.Since President Donald Trump's re-election, the Democratic Party has been looking to the 2026 midterm election, where the party out of power typically over-performs, as a political comeback. Though Halperin agreed that Democrats have a chance to do well in 2026, he said they are concerned about their prospects in the next presidential cycle."The Democrats I talked to are far less worried about 2026 in the midterms because this history suggests that even weak, the party could still do well enough to take back the House. What they're worried about is 2028," the "Next Up" podcast host said.Halperin continued, "What they're worried about is the capacity of the party to redefine itself and to win back voters they'll need to win the White House, particularly because they are a party right now without strong candidates. The Democratic brand, on its own right now, it appears to be on the wrong side of both the polling and of the history. And that's a big problem."MARK HALPERIN: DEMOCRATS TRY TO CONSTRUCT A FRANKENSTEIN CANDIDATE WHILE JD VANCE GAINS MOMENTUM FOR 2028Several recent polls have shown the Democratic Party with both record-low approval ratings and record-high disapproval ratings.A CNN poll conducted July 10-13 and released earlier this month found just 28% of Americans viewed the party favorably. This was the lowest mark for Democrats in the entire history of CNN polling.A Wall Street Journal survey released on Friday found a whopping 63% of respondents holding an unfavorable opinion of the Democrats, the highest recorded unfavorable rating for the party by the WSJ in 35 years.Halperin blamed the partys insistence on being against Trump on every single issue, including popular measures such as securing the border."The Democrats simply accentuate the downsides of these achievements," Halperin said. "They find and highlight the weak links, and there are weak links, rather than grappling with what's actually happening that I think is more important. That the trends in this country in terms of public opinion have fueled Trump's rise and capacity to get stuff done. Trump has understood where public opinion was on these issues and others, and the Democratic Party has been and largely remains clueless."RAHM EMANUEL ADMITS HIS PARTY IS 'LESS POPULAR THAN ELON MUSK' IN SCATHING CRITIQUEHe added that Democrats now seemed unwilling to confront the activist wing in their party and "lack the creativity and self-awareness" to truly address where they went wrong.Fox News Digital reached out to the Democratic National Committee for comment.Though several Democratic figures have emerged as potential candidates to run in 2028, there has yet to be a clear frontrunner.CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE FOX NEWS APP

Orioles reliever Seranthony Dominguez walks over to join Blue Jays after trade reached during doubleheader
The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays didnt just face each other on the diamond Tuesday they got a trade done before the MLB deadline.Right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez was shipped from the home clubhouse at Camden Yards to the visiting one after the Orioles sent him to the Blue Jays for right-handed prospect Juaron Watts-Browns.While players traded usually need to figure out flight plans and car pickups to join their new squad, Dominguez was spotted simply walking through the tunnel to join the Blue Jays in the middle of their doubleheader on Tuesday.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMSo, for Game 1, Dominguez was active and ready to go if the Os called on him to pitch against the Blue Jays. But for Game 2, he suited up in his once-rivals uniform and was ready to face his former teammates if needed. To make room for Dominguez on the roster, the Blue Jays designated Chad Green for assignment after he gave up four runs in the teams blowout loss, 16-4, in Game 1.This is the third reliever Baltimore has dealt this year, as Bryan Baker went to the Tampa Bay Rays, and the New York Mets added lefty Gregory Soto in their deal with the Orioles.Being traded before the deadline is nothing new for Dominguez, who was moved by the Philadelphia Phillies last season to the Orioles. He had a 3.97 ERA over 26 relief appearances for Baltimore since being dealt. This season, Dominguez has a 3.24 ERA over 43 outings on the mound. He has some electric stuff on the mound, but has struggled with some command this season. While Dominguez has 54 strikeouts over his appearances, he also had 24 walks and 32 hits, which comes out to a 1.344 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched).Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Watts-Brown has spent time with Double-A New Hampshire and High-A Vancouver this season, where he has a 3.54 ERA over 19 starts.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Charlie Kirk embraces 'South Park' parody of him in upcoming episode as a 'badge of honor'
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk may have cemented himself as a pop culture figure as he appears to have been parodied by "South Park."In a teaser released Tuesday for its upcoming episode, Kirk's likeness was adopted by iconic "South Park" character Eric Cartman, who is seen with a hairstyle similar to the conservative firebrand and is in a heated spat with a classmate, mirroring Kirk's exchanges with students on college campuses."You can just shut up, Bebe, because you hate America and you love abortion," Cartman shouts at fellow student Bebe Stevens.SOUTH PARK CREATORS REVEAL BATTLE WITH NETWORK OVER WILD TRUMP DEPICTION, JOKE THEY'RE TERRIBLY SORRYKirk quickly embraced the parody, changing his X profile picture to a screenshot of Cartman and posting to his over 5 million followers, "I'm so watching this."Speaking with Fox News Digital, Kirk said he laughed when he first saw the teaser, saying multiple people sent him the clip. He initially thought it was "some sort of AI troll.""I think it's kind of funny and it kind of goes to show the cultural impact and the resonance that our movement has been able to achieve," Kirk told Fox News Digital. "So I look at this as a badge of honor."Kirk said he hasn't seen as much of "South Park" in recent years as he did in high school, but appreciated the long-running animated series being an "equal opportunity offender."WHITE HOUSE FIRES BACK AFTER SOUTH PARK MOCKS TRUMP AND PARAMOUNT SETTLEMENTWhile it's unclear what Cartman's Kirk-like persona does in the episode, which will air August 6, last week's season premiere may give a clue.In the previous episode, Cartman is demoralized after it is declared that "woke is dead," causing the foul-mouthed, offensive fourth-grader to have an identity crisis as everyone else in South Park sheds their cultural sensitivities. Meanwhile, controversy erupted in his hometown when South Park Elementary began injecting Christianity into school, even going so far as having Jesus Christ looming in the hallways.CHARLIE KIRK CALLS MAMDANI THE CAMPUS RIOT CANDIDATE, WARNS HE'S A PREVIEW OF DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S FUTURE"I'm excited to watch it because, look, we as conservatives need to be able to take a joke, right? We shouldn't take ourselves so seriously," Kirk said. "That's something that the left has always done to great detriment to themselves and their movement.""They're professional comedians. They're probably gonna roast me, and I think that's fine. And that's what it's all about, being in public life and, you know, making a difference. And I'm gonna have a good spirit about it. I'll watch it. I'm going to laugh at it," Kirk continued. "From a religious standpoint, we're all sinners. We all fall short of the glory of God. Like from a more practical life standpoint, we're all broken people. Stop taking yourself so seriously. That's probably one of the problems that we've had in our politics is that people can't take a joke.""South Park," which airs on Comedy Central, held no punches against President Donald Trump after the network's parent company Paramount reached a major settlement with him earlier this month to resolve his "60 Minutes" lawsuit. In the 27th season premiere, Trump was repeatedly compared to the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (who "South Park" had previously satirized during the Iraq War), depicted him as literally being in bed with Satan, and was lampooned for leveling lawsuit threats. The episode quickly went viral for showing a life-like graphic depiction of the president and his genitalia. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"This show hasnt been relevant for over 20 years and is hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention," White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital. "President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our countrys history and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trumps hot streak."Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of "South Park," recently reached a whopping $1.5 billion streaming deal with Paramount.Fox News' Gabriel Hays contributed to this report.

Los Angeles County pushes to prohibit law enforcement from hiding their identities while on the job
Los Angeles County officials are calling for an ordinance to prohibit law enforcement officers from concealing their identities while on duty. The move comes after recent federal immigration raids in the city where some federal agents covered their faces with masks and refused to reveal their identities, which is not abnormal. The Board of Supervisors voted 40, with one abstention, on Tuesday to direct county counsel to draft an ordinance that bans law enforcement, including federal agents, from wearing masks, with some exceptions including for medical protection or during undercover operations.Officers would also be required to visibly display identification and agency affiliation while on duty in public.MASSACHUSETTS BILL WOULD FORCE ICE AGENTS TO UNMASKFederal agents have conducted ICE raids in Southern California since June under President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda, sparking protests and the subsequent federal deployment of the National Guard and Marines. About half the Guard troops and all the Marines have since been pulled out of Los Angeles.Supervisor Janice Hahn, who co-authored the motion, said the raids have provoked fear and residents have a right to know who is stopping, questioning or detaining them."Across the county, people are being pulled out of their cars, beaten, and ripped from their families by men in tactical gear with balaclavas, no badges, and no names," Hahn said. "Thats not how law enforcement in a democracy should operate."Hahn admitted that it is unclear if the county will be able to enforce the measure against actions by federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement."Ultimately, it might have to be decided by a court," she said.FROM 'SAFETY' TO 'FASCIST STATE': SENATORS SHARE OPINIONS ON ICE AGENTS WEARING MASKSAdministration officials have defended officers who conceal their identities, arguing that immigration agents do it for their safety to avoid potential death threats and doxing, which includes releasing someones personal information online without their permission."Im sorry if people are offended by them wearing masks, but Im not going to let my officers and agents go out there and put their lives on the line, their family on the line because people dont like what immigration enforcement is," ICE acting director Todd Lyons said last month.A pending measure in the state legislature would prohibit local, state and federal police from covering their faces while on duty in the Golden State. Similar legislation has been proposed in other states and U.S. Sens. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., have introduced a bill at the federal level. In Los Angeles County, the county counsel has 60 days to submit the draft ordinance to the board for approval.Supervisor Hilda Solis, the other co-author, said local officials must establish expectations about how law enforcement should conduct themselves in the county."The use of masks, tactical gear, and refusal to show identification is not only alarming and confusing, but erodes public trust and raises serious safety concerns," Solis said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

ESPN star offers scathing critique of network's Cowboys coverage: 'Not relevant in January'
The Dallas Cowboys continue to be one of the most talked-about sports franchises in the nation. But former sports columnist and longtime TV commentator Michael Wilbon suggested the talk about "America's Team" should be tempered.During their heyday, which included three Super Bowl titles in the first half of the 1990s, the Cowboys were known as "America's Team." The club also won a pair of titles in the 1970s and had rosters filled with star players. But since winning the Super Bowl in the 1995 season, success has been sparse. The franchise hasn't advanced to a conference championship since that season.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMBut the limited on-field victories have not stopped the national media from discussing the team. Wilbon argued Dallas becomes irrelevant once the calendar turns to January.JERRY JONES FACES 'PAY MICAH' CHANTS FROM COWBOYS FANS AT TRAINING CAMP SESSION"The Cowboys, theyre not in the big action late," Wilbon said on Monday's episode of "Pardon the Interruption" during a discussion about longtime team owner Jerry Jones."Theyre not relevant in January. So, he could be hurting his team while hes doing it. Again, I dont care about that because I dont care about the Cowboys, even though I know most of the programming on this network is devoted to Jerry Jones and the Cowboys."Wilbon further explained he mostly ignores what Jones says during his frequent news conferences."Theres nothing Jerry Jones says that I pay any attention to. Nothing," Wilbon added. "Because the point of trying to decipher what he says and assign meaning to it is a damn waste of time, and I don't have that much. Jerry Jones likes to hear himself talk. He likes to talk. He likes to stand in a room with reporters and talk. Im sure if theres nobody in the room, hed stand there and talk."While the Cowboys have not found their way back to the NFL mountaintop in nearly three decades, Jones has reached the pinnacle in terms of business operations. In 2024, a valuation from Forbes estimated the Cowboys were worth an estimated $10.1 billion, making the franchise the most valuable sports team in the world.Jones is in the midst of a closely watched contract extension negotiation with Micah Parson's reps. Jones has commented on the situation as he weighs whether to offer Parsons a long-term deal that would presumably make the pass rusher the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.Jones contended with fans chanting "re-sign Parsons" at training camp this week. Jones acknowledged the message from fans and compared it to last year's situation with star receiver CeeDee Lamb."I heard it light, but not compared to how I heard them say, 'Pay Lamb [last year]," Jones said Sunday. "That was a faint little sound compared to the way they were hollering last year, Pay Lamb. Whoevers not in, you can count on a few hollering that. But it was a big loud chant last year on Lamb."The Cowboys finished last season with a 7-10 record.Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Ex-Planned Parenthood director celebrates closure of Houston facilities: 'Not shocking'
EXCLUSIVE: Former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist Abby Johnson said the organization's announcement that two of its facilities in Houston, Texas, will be shutting down this fall represents a "symbolic victory" for the pro-life movement.Johnson, who resigned in 2009, told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that she believes the pro-life movement secured a key win with the facility closures, which includes a 78,000-square-foot clinic that was once the largest abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere before Texas' abortion ban."I think it's a victory, I think more than anything it's certainly taking ground for the pro-life movement," Johnson said. "As far as being a victory in saving babies, it's more of a symbolic victory in that way, because women aren't walking into that building to get abortions anymore. Abortions in the state of Texas are happening online."Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast which runs six clinics in the Houston area and two in Louisiana will close its Prevention Park and Southwest centers on Sept. 30, while the other Houston facilities will be acquired by the organization's largest Texas affiliate.PRO-LIFE GROUP 'ELATED' AFTER PLANNED PARENTHOOD SHUTTERS HOUSTON FACILITIES: 'TREMENDOUS VICTORY'Facilities in GOP-led states with abortion restrictions, including Texas, have been forced to cease procedures following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe V. Wade and returned power to make laws regarding abortion back to the states.Johnson, who worked for eight years at a clinic in Bryan, Texas, that was run by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, recalled the celebration among her former colleagues when plans for the Houston mega-facility were unveiled, although she resigned from the organization before it was opened in 2010."I was in the room on the day that they unveiled the plans. I was in the room on the day that they unveiled the model of that building. Everyone was so excited that we were going to have this 78,000-square-foot abortion facility," Johnson said. "I remember the capacity that they were going to be able to see, the capacity of patients, the excitement of being able to perform 75 abortions every day, six days a week.""So the fact that this facility is no longer even going to be an option, even if surgical abortion was reinstated here in the state of Texas, that facility is no longer going to be operational," she continued. "It's no longer going to be able to be used as an abortion facility. That in itself is a victory."The company cited rising costs, staffing shortages and low reimbursement rates as the reasons for closing the two Houston facilities. State GOP officials in recent years have made repeated attempts to shut down Planned Parenthood even after nearly all abortions were banned under Texas law.The closings in Houston come amid several closures of Planned Parenthood facilities in various states, including New York, where the organization is selling its only Manhattan health center building for $39 million.Johnson, who now runs a pro-life ministry, said mergers were already happening when she worked for Planned Parenthood, including with the facility she worked for, and she expects mergers to continue as more facilities close across the country."When I first began working for Planned Parenthood, there were almost 100 affiliates. That number has more than halved since I left Planned Parenthood. Affiliates are merging, clinics are closing and they are losing staff. They're having to lay off staff because of clinic closures and mergers," she said, adding that "morale is low" and the work environment is not happy. She said Planned Parenthood wanted to be the "big guy" and essentially close down independent abortion providers to create a monopoly, which she said seems like it will not end up happening."Many of the independent providers are closing as well. Planned Parenthood facilities are also closing at a very rapid rate," she said.Johnson also said she believes the shuttering of the facility is "incredibly demoralizing" and likely "humiliating" for Planned Parenthood and the pro-choice lobby."That was a trophy for Planned Parenthood to operate the largest Planned Parenthood in the country," she said. "And for the largest Planned Parenthood to have to close, I think it's incredibly demoralizing and probably humiliating for them as well."Addressing Planned Parenthood's claim that abortions make up only 3% of its services, Johnson said that has been proven false given that facilities in states with abortion bans have had to close."Now we're being proven right because all of these facilities that don't provide abortions are being forced to shut down," Johnson said. "Because abortion is an overwhelming part of what they do, so all of these clinics that do not do abortions are being forced to close."She said she was not shocked to see that the mega-facility was closing since it can no longer bring in money from performing abortions and can now only offer its other services."You've got a seven-story, 78,000-square-foot building that's only doing birth control and STD testing. It's not shocking that it closed down because you don't have any significant revenue coming into the facility. There are no abortions going on. That's their primary source of revenue," she said.Large facilities in some Democrat-led states are not experiencing the same setbacks because they are able to continue performing abortions and have money flowing in because of it, Johnson said.FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION FROM DEFUNDING SOME PLANNED PARENTHOOD FACILITIES"I think Texas, Louisiana, the southern states, we could have a unique opportunity here because we don't have abortion," she said. "We don't have legal abortion here in the state and we don't have state and federal money pouring into these facilities."She also noted that places, like California, allowing access to surgical abortion are completely overrun with patients who travel for the procedure since it is banned in GOP-led states.Johnson emphasized that despite the victory in Houston, the pro-life movement still has a lot of work to do, pointing to data showing that abortion numbers in Texas have remained about the same since the state banned surgical abortions."Even though abortion is technically illegal in the state of Texas, women are having abortions at the same exact rate as it was when it was legal," she said. "These women are going online, they're getting abortions from online abortion providers."Abortion pills are "very easy to obtain," she highlighted.
