'Hydration boosters' or just water? Medical experts make recommendations for beating the summer heat
Surviving the summer heat is all about hydration, hydration, hydration.Water will usually do the trick but some "hydration multipliers," or electrolyte supplements, are gaining in popularity for boosting hydration in just one drink. These drink mixes offer a blend of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium to enhance water absorption.THE HEAT HAS A SURPRISING EFFECT ON THE BRAIN HERE'S WHAT DOCTORS WANT YOU TO KNOWBut are these boosters necessary for staying fully hydrated on hot days?Brunilda Nazario, M.D., chief physician editor of medical affairs at WebMD, told Fox News Digital that staying hydrated is "essential" for health."Many people think about hydration as drinking water," she said."Yet it's more than just about drinking water. Hydration is also about maintaining the balance of electrolytes like salt, potassium and magnesium."Nazario said hydration multipliers, or sports drinks, are "right in some circumstances."AMERICANS TOLD TO AVOID COFFEE DURING EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN 3 STATES"Water may be the best replacement for most people that are active but for some, hydration products are the best way to stay hydrated," she said."Stains or rings on your clothing while sweating may mean your sweat contains a lot of salt, an essential and critical electrolyte that needs to be replenished."For those who exercise "intensely" or sweat "profusely," Nazario recommends trying a hydration multiplier or sports drink as a "better option" to prevent dehydration."Thats because re-hydration happens faster with products that have sodium," she said."While hydration products may be good during hot summer days, if youre watching your salt intake, be mindful that these drinks can contain high amounts of salt."Dr. Glenn Hirsch, a cardiologist at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado, said in a separate interview with Fox News Digital that drinking adequate amounts of regular water is mostly "sufficient."But hydration-multiplying supplements can be helpful during exercise in hot conditions, especially if activity lasts for more than an hour."When a person is sweating a lot or if they are in a dry climate they can lose a lot of fluids and electrolytes in hot conditions without realizing it," the doctor said. "Replacing fluid and electrolytes is helpful."While electrolyte powders add more salt and potassium for hydration, too much salt and potassium can lead to complications in some people with conditions like high blood pressure or kidney disease.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERSome supplements also use synthetic sweeteners or sugar, said Hirsch, which is important for people with diabetes to know."In general, using these in moderation can work for most people when someone is doing a lot of sweating or working in a hot environment rather than just for daily hydration," he said. "In that case, regular water is preferred."Nazario encouraged people to watch for signs of dehydration and not to wait until they're thirsty to drink water, which is a sign youre "already dehydrated.""Drink before, during, and after exercise or outdoor activities on a hot day," she said. "For outdoor activities, drink seven to 10 ounces every 10 to 20 minutes."Hirsch recommended drinking water slowly before going out into hot climates, even as much as four hours before. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/health"Drinking about one-half liter to a liter of water prior to activity can be helpful," he said."Having at least 500 ml to a liter of water every hour during activity in hot weather is important.""Having sports drinks or electrolyte powders to add to water can be helpful to avoid water intoxication from too much water without electrolyte replenishment, which can occur after an hour of exercise in hot conditions and with large amounts of water intake alone."Hirsch added that having salty snacks can also be a helpful substitute along with regular water during prolonged activity.

Federal judge restricts LAPD from targeting journalists with force at immigration protests
A Los Angeles-based federal judge appointed by former President Joe Biden recently issued a temporary restraining order, restricting the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from using less-lethal munitions (LLMs) on journalists covering immigration protests. The order, signed by Judge Hernan Vera on Thursday, also prevents the LAPD from detaining or restricting the movements of journalists.Vera cited at least 35 "troubling" incidents between June 6 and 19, where police allegedly exposed journalists to LLM, tear gas and other physical force to block them from covering conflict zones.LOS ANGELES JUDGE WEIGHS SEVERE LIMITS ON TRUMP'S IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT IN CALIFORNIAWhen journalists persisted in documenting the protests, Vera said it appeared they faced an onslaught of projectiles and other shows of physical force."On some occasions, LAPD officers purportedly targeted individuals who were clearly identifiable as members of the press," he wrote in the order.VIOLENT ANTI-TRUMP PROTESTERS FORCE LAPD TO TAKE ACTION AS PEACEFUL DAY TURNS CHAOTICVera pointed to an incident on June 8 when Lauren Tomasi of 9News Australia was speaking into a professional TV camera, dozens of feet from the line of officers behind her.The judge noted that no protesters were visible behind her when an LAPD officer aimed at Tomasi, hitting her leg with a rubber bullet.FEDERAL JUDGE ORDERS TRUMP TO RETURN CONTROL OF CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD TO NEWSOMOther incidents cited in the order detail journalists allegedly being shot with LLMs and being pushed by officers."Indeed, given the fundamental nature of the speech interests involved and the almost daily protests throughout Southern California drawing media coverage, the identified harm is undoubtedly imminent and concrete," Vera wrote.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPThe court will hold another hearing soon to decide if a longer preliminary injunction on the LAPD should be imposed.

PBS station singles out GOP senators in contentious public broadcasting funding battle
PBS Kansas has irked Republicans with a new advertisement urging viewers to contact GOP senators directly ahead of a critical vote about whether public media should receive federal funding. The Trump administration has targeted federal funding to PBS, along with NPR, and the Senate is set to vote on a "rescissions" package next week that could strip the public media organizations of cash. "Rescissions" refers to legislation that cancels or rescinds previously appropriated funds.PBS Kansas CEO Victor Hogstrom took matters into his own hands with an ad speaking directly to viewers."By July 18, the U.S. Senate could eliminate funding for PBS Kansas, meaning some favorite programs could disappear. Yes, community support powers seriously good TV, but federal support matters. If you've ever laughed, learned, or felt moved watching PBS Kansas, now is the time to call your U.S. senators to help keep your station, your stories on the air," Hogstrom tells viewers before photos and phone numbers for Kansas Republican Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran appear.DEFUNDING NPR AND PBS FINALLY WITHIN REACH, SAYS HOUSE REPUBLICANMarshalls office believes the ad is proof PBS shouldnt receive federal funding."For those questioning whether NPR and PBS simply serve as taxpayer-funded mouthpieces for the Democratic Party, look no further. If theyve got enough money to run taxpayer-funded ads in Kansas, it makes the decision for us to cut their funding that much easier,"a spokesperson for Marshall told Fox News Digital.National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) political director Brendan Jaspers blasted the ad, calling for it to be pulled immediately."The Progressive Bias Syndicate (PBS) is running issue ads against Senate Republicans using taxpayer dollars - to request MORE taxpayer dollars," Jaspers posted on social media."Its an egregious effort by PBS to prop up the failed Democrats who fund their propaganda," he continued. "Pull the ads immediately."FCC chairman Brendan Carr said he will probe if the PBS Kansas ad violates any federal laws.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE"Federal law prohibits noncommercial stationsincluding PBS onesfrom accepting money in exchange for airing political issue ads. Ive asked the FCCs enforcement team to determine whether or not that happened here. I would encourage PBS & NPR to focus more on how they managed to lose Americas trust. That is their problem, not Congresss work to ensure good stewardship of taxpayer dollars," Carr posted on X.Member stations of public broadcasting outlets like NPR and PBS receive federal funds but are also backed by individual and commercial donations. PBS Kansas did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When it comes to sounding the funding alarm, PBS insiders say the organization is simply directing people to a "Protect My Public Media" website and nothing more. The commercial was made independently by the member station in Kansas."Public media is more at risk now than ever before.Despite overwhelming public opposition, the House passed a rescissions package that would eliminate $1.1 billion in already-approved funding for public media. If enacted, it would strip essential services from communities nationwide and could force rural stations off the air entirely," the website states."The Senate will vote on the rescissions package next week, and changes are still possible," the site continues."Now is the time to urge them to remove the proposal targeting public media from the package."WHITE HOUSE URGES CONGRESS TO CUT FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NPR, PBSThe website also features a "call your lawmakers" button that offers both contact information and talking points. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Republicans who vote against his plans to defund PBS and NPR will no longer receive his support."It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions [sic] Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together. Any Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement. Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump posted on Truth Social. Both PBS and NPR have been heavily criticized by Republicans for political bias and advancing leftist agendas like gender ideology, such as a PBS movie called "Real Boy," which, according to PBS, follows a transgender-identifying teen as he "navigates adolescence, sobriety, and physical and emotional ramifications of his changing gender identity."DAVID MARCUS: PBS, NPR AND A LETHAL CASE OF TDSNPR CEO Katherine Maher and PBS CEO Paula Kerger testified before the DOGE subcommitteein March about alleged biased content that put their platforms in GOP crosshairs.Kerger insisted that PBS is vital to Americans who rely on it for specific news, ranging from coverage of high school sports and local elections to specialized agricultural stories.Fox News Digitals Paul Steinhauser and Peter Pinedocontributed to this report.

Teens and phone use while driving: Why this deadly habit persists
Phones have become a constant companion for today's teens, offering entertainment, connection and navigation at their fingertips. But when it comes to driving, this convenience can quickly turn dangerous. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, taking your eyes off the road for just five seconds at 55 mph is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. In recent years, distracted driving has contributed to over 3,200 deaths and hundreds of thousands of crashes annually in the U.S., averaging nearly 900 incidents every day.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HEREA new study led by Dr. Rebecca Robbins at Brigham and Women's Hospital, part of the Mass General Brigham system, and published in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention, found that teens spend an average of 21% of every car trip looking at their phones. That's roughly one out of every five minutes behind the wheel. Even more alarming, more than a quarter of teens admitted to glancing at their phones for two seconds or longer at a time, long enough to dramatically increase the risk of a crash. You might assume teens are just checking directions, but the data tells a different story:This means that the urge to stay entertained or connected often outweighs safety concerns, even when teens are aware of the risks.Researchers used the Integrated Model of Behavioral Prediction to investigate what motivates teenagers to use their phones while driving. They found that many teens believe using their phones makes driving more enjoyable or helps them multitask. Social influence also plays a significant role; when friends or family members use their phones while driving, teens are more likely to adopt the same behavior. Additionally, many teens feel confident in their ability to manage both driving and phone use, which leads them to underestimate the real dangers involved.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?Reducing teen phone use behind the wheel requires a combination of practical strategies, open communication and positive role modeling. Here are some effective tips to help keep young drivers focused and safe:1. Set "Do Not Disturb": Activate "Do Not Disturb" mode before driving to block notifications and reduce temptation.2. Keep phones out of reach:Store your phone in the glove box or back seat so it's not easily accessible.3. Talk about risks:Parents and schools should regularly discuss the dangers of distracted driving with teens.4. Model safe behavior:Adults should avoid using phones while driving to set a positive example.5. Use monitoring apps: Consider apps that block phone use or track driving habits for added accountability.6. Know the law:Understand and follow your state's rules on phone use for young drivers. The alarming truth is that teens and phone use while driving isn't just about a lack of awareness; it's about competing motivations, social pressures, and a dangerous sense of confidence. As technology evolves, so must our strategies for keeping young drivers safe.If you knew that just one glance at your phone could change your life or someone else's forever, would you still take the risk? He said there was "no place for racism in the world" and that Reese "should never be called or depicted as a monkey."He added that he was quiet about Reese because of the hate he and his family received over the most recent discourse in May after a contentious moment between the two WNBA stars.'JEOPARDY!' Court throws out plea deal for 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, two other terrorists
A divided federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. on Friday tossed out an agreement that would have allowed 9/11 terror mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to plead guilty, in another failed effort to end a years-long legal saga surrounding the military prosecution of men held at Guantnamo Bay.The 2-1 D.C. Circuit appeals court decision upheld then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austins decision to undo the plea deal approved by military lawyers and senior Pentagon staff. The deal would have carried life without parole sentences for Mohammed and two co-defendants, potentially taking capital punishment off the table.FEDERAL JUDGE SAYS ATTEMPTED DEPORTATION OF ANTI-ISRAEL RINGLEADER MAHMOUD KHALIL MAY BE UNCONSTITUTIONALMohammed, a Pakistani national, is accused of spearheading the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and another commercial jetliner that crashed in Pennsylvania.Austin said a decision on whether to take the death penalty off the table could only be made by the Secretary of Defense. However, legal concerns stemmed from whether the original plea deal was legally binding, and if Austin waited too long to get it dismissed.TRUMP FOE JUDGE BOASBERG RULES DEPORTED MIGRANTS CAN CHALLENGE REMOVALS, IN BLOW TO ADMINISTRATIONThe court found Austin indisputably had legal authority to withdraw from the agreements because the promises made in the deal had not yet been fulfilled, and the government had no adequate alternative remedies.Since the appeals court put the agreement on hold, the defendants were not sentenced Friday as previously scheduledmarking a temporary victory for the Biden administration.Judges Patricia Millett and Neomi Rao, of the majority opinion, noted the government "adequately explained that Secretary Austin delayed action to avoid an unlawful influence challenge, waiting to see what type of agreement, if any, would result from the negotiations and only then deciding whether intervention was necessary."Citing previous unlawful influence allegations against various government officials, including the Secretary of Defense, Millett and Rao found that Austin was "reasonable" to withdraw from the agreements to avoid additional litigation."Having properly assumed the convening authority, the Secretary determined that the "families and the American public deserve the opportunity to see military commission trials carried out," the judges wrote. "The Secretary acted within the bounds of his legal authority, and we decline to second-guess his judgment."ANTI-ISRAEL RINGLEADER MAHMOUD KHALIL'S FREE SPEECH LAWSUIT AGAINST US GOVERNMENT MUST BE HEARD: JUDGEJudge Robert L. Wilkins, in dissent, argued that siding with the government would be an overreach."The Courts holding is stunning," Wilkins wrote. "Not only does the majority believe that Respondents [prosecutors who negotiated the plea deal] did not begin performance, but it holds that the government established a clear and indisputable right to a writ of mandamus or prohibition."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"It is impossible for me to conclude that the government has shown it is clearly and indisputably entitled to relief," he continued. "That demanding mandamus standard is even further out of the governments reach where the government cannot cite binding on-point precedent in support of its claims and we are constrained to reviewing for clear error both the Military Judges finding that the PTAs encompassed the relevant promises and his application of the withdrawal regulation. But even on de novo review of those findings, the government has not met its burden."
