'Coward' facing charges, accused of targeting federal agents with fiery attack at Los Angeles hotel
A career criminal accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Los Angeles hotel where federal agents were staying last week during immigration enforcement operations has been charged.Eric Anthony Rodriguez, 39, is charged with the charged with the federal equivalent of having a bomb or explosive device, according to court documents.Rodriguez hurled the Molotov cocktail on June 21 at a hotel near Los Angeles International Airport, where 15 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and 12 Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents were staying, the Justice Department said.FEDERAL AGENTS THWART MAN'S EXPLOSIVE ALLEGED PLOT AGAINST OFFICERS DURING LA RIOTS"This coward threw a Molotov cocktail at a hotel in Los Angeles where 27 DHS law enforcement officers were staying," said Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. "Thankfully, the attack was unsuccessful, and no one was injured."The device fell into some bushes and was extinguished by a hotel employee. The Los Angeles Police Department was called to investigate the incident and quickly zeroed in on Rodriguez after obtaining surveillance footage from nearby businesses. He was arrested hours later after he was found asleep near a gas station one block away from the hotel, authorities said.DHS RELEASES VIDEO OF AGENTS ARRESTING SUSPECT WHO ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED BORDER PATROL OFFICERMcLaughlin blamed the incident, and others in which law enforcement personnel have been assaulted, on sanctuary city politicians who have blamed the Trump administration for targeting illegal immigrants, even those with criminal records, for deportation."Dangerous rhetoric by sanctuary politicians has fanned the flames of violence against federal law enforcementand it has led to a 500% increase in assaults against ICE," she said. "Secretary Noem has been perfectly clear: Anyone who threatens the lives of federal officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the lawand that is exactly what will happen to Rodriguez."Rodriguez has a lengthy criminal history, with previous convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree robbery, falsifying checks, theft and vandalism. He also had an outstanding felony warrant for violating parole. He was most recently convicted of first-degree robbery in March 2024 and was sentenced to two years in prison.

Parent groups, religious liberty experts hail SCOTUS upholding parents rights in LGBTQ books case
The Supreme Court's decision on Friday supporting Maryland parents who fought to withdraw their children from LGBTQ storybook lessons in elementary school classrooms was hailed as a victory for parents' rights and religious liberty."Todays victory sent a resounding message to activist school board members and educators nationwide: parental rights are not optional, and our children are not sounding boards or political tools for your radical agendas," Alleigh Marr, executive director of the parental rights group, American Parents Coalition, said in a statement following the ruling."This victory offered critical clarification to activist school board members in Montgomery County, Maryland, who displayed disdain for parental authority and opt-outs, making it clear that teaching 3-year-olds about radical gender ideology was a higher priority than student learning, much less parental rights," she added. In a 6-3 decision that fell along ideological lines, the court held that parents were entitled to opt their children out of school lessons that could violate their religious beliefs.PARENTS TELL SCOTUS: LGBTQ STORYBOOKS IN CLASSROOM CLASH WITH OUR FAITH"We have long recognized," Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority, "the rights of parents to direct 'the religious upbringing' of their children. And we have held that those rights are violated by government policies that substantially interfere with the religious development of children.""We reject this chilling vision of the power of the state to strip away the critical right of parents to guide the religious development of their children," Alito wrote. The parents, from Muslim, Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox faiths, sued Montgomery County Public Schools after the district refused to allow parents the choice to withdraw their school-age children from being introduced to LGBTQ pride storybooks in the classroom. According to Becket, the legal group representing the parents' case, the books "champion pride parades, gender transition and pronoun preferences for children."While the school board initially allowed parents to opt their children out of this curriculum, the board quickly reversed course after too many parents requested opt-outs, believing it "undermined the schools educational obligations toward inclusion, equity, and respect," according to the ACLU, who filed an amicus brief with the court in support of the school district. The families alleged the forced participation in these lessons violated their parental rights and religious convictions protected under the First Amendment.SCOTUS RULINGS THIS TERM COULD STRENGTHEN RELIGIOUS RIGHTS PROTECTIONS, EXPERT SAYSIn a scathing dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that allowing children to be "insulated from exposure to ideas and concepts that may conflict with their parents' religious beliefs" was a threat to democracy and multicultural society."Todays ruling ushers in that new reality. Casting aside longstanding precedent, the Court invents a constitutional right to avoid exposure to subtle themes contrary to the religious principles that parents wish to instill in their children," she wrote."The result will be chaos for this nation's public schools," Sotomayor added.A law professor who specializes in religious liberty cases and lives in Montgomery County told Fox News Digital that the court wasn't threatening diversity, but actually protecting diversity of opinion."It's really about protecting pluralism in a fundamental, principled way," Professor Asma Uddin said. "If the concern is about inclusion and making space for diverse viewpoints, then that has to extend beyond a certain set of things that have to be presented to also give space for diverse viewpoints. We can do that through procedural flexibility the ability to opt out from these readings."CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREUddin, a fellow at the Faith and Media Initiative who will be teaching constitutional law at Michigan State University in the fall, called it troubling the way the school board dismissed the views of these parents, referencing how one member even compared their views to those of "White supremacists.""It has to be something where people have genuine rights to disagree even on things that are just really contentious, that are really core to who we are as people, to our identities. It's got to be a space where we can have a diversity of views on that," she added.According to Becket, the Montgomery County School Board is one of the few school boards across the nation to ban notices and opt-outs for parents on sexuality and gender instruction.Parents in this case were not trying to ban LGBTQ books from the classroom, but were asking that they be notified before they are used in classroom instruction and be given the option to withdraw their children from these lessons.Kelsey Reinhardt, president and CEO of CatholicVote, a conservative political advocacy group, reacted to the ruling in a statement, saying, "It should alarm every American that such a case needed the intervention of the nations highest court. It is worth stating clearly that the state cannot raise your child better than you. Parents, not politicians or activists, are the primary educators of their children.""The Courts ruling sends a clear and powerful message: America still respects the rights of parents to raise their children in line with their faith and conscience. And school boards have no business putting ideology over families. Let this decision renew our courage. We must continue to stand firm against efforts to undermine the family, which is the first school of love, truth, and freedom," she added.Lawyer and president of the conservative Judicial Crisis Network Carrie Severino said in a statement, "Public school children shouldnt be hostages in the culture wars, and todays Supreme Court case affirmed that by restoring the rights of parents to direct the education of their children, especially their religious education.""Ten years ago in Obergefell, Justice Kennedy promised that religious rights would continue to be respected, even in the face of an increasingly doctrinaire LGBTQ orthodoxy. Unfortunately, it has taken a decade of Court decisions to correct the many lower courts who have denegrated First Amendment rights, but todays decision is a major victory in that effort," she added.

Mamdani's political earthquake rocks Democrats, dividing party on path forward
For Republicans, the reaction to democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani's stunning victory this week in New York City's Democratic Party primary for mayor was simple. They attacked the Ugandan-born 33-year-old state assemblyman from Queens, who took a major step toward becoming the first Muslim mayor of the nation's most populous city, as an extremist and anchored him to Democrats across the country ahead of next year's midterm elections. The attacks stretched from down ballot on the campaign trail all the way up to the White House, with President Donald Trump claiming that Mamdani was "a 100% Communist Lunatic."REPUBLICANS USE MAMDANI BOMBSHELL VICTORY OVER CUOMO AS AMMUNITION TO BLAST DEMOCRATS AS EXTREMISTSFor Democrats, it's more complicated.Mamdani shocked the political world, topping former three-term Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the rest of the 11-candidate field in the Democratic mayoral primary. Cuomo, who resigned from office in 2021 amid multiple scandals, was aiming for a political comeback.WHAT MAMDANI'S STUNNING PRIMARY VICTORY MEANS FOR DEMOCRATS NATIONWIDEOnce a longshot, Mamdani closed the gap with frontrunner Cuomo during the final stretch of the primary race thanks to an energetic campaign that focused in great part on New York City's high cost of living.Endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive rock star and New York City's most prominent leader on the left, and by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the progressive champion and two-time Democratic presidential runner-up nominee, helped Mamdani consolidate support on the left. And Mamdani, thanks in part to the efforts of a massive grassroots army of volunteers and his campaign's creative use of social media, rode a wave of support from younger and progressive voters to catapult himself into first place.New York Citys mayoral primarycampaign played out as the Democratic Party works to escape from the political wilderness after last year's elections, when the party lost control of the White House and the Senate majority and failed to win back control of the House from the GOP. It also came as the party works to resist Trump's sweeping and controversial second-term agenda. And Mamdani's victory adds more fuel to the longstanding showdowns in the Democratic Party, between the progressive left and the more moderate establishment and centrists, and, to a degree between young versus old.CUOMO STAYING IN NYC MAYORAL RACE, FOR NOW: SOURCESVeteran Democratic strategist Lauren Hitt, who in the mayoral race advised a super PAC opposing Cuomo, told Fox News that Mamdani's victory was a "clear rejection of the old guard."And Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder Stephanie Taylor told Fox News that Mamdani's "victory shows that a new direction for the Democratic Party is possible a future of dynamic candidates who appeal to young and working-class voters with a platform that fights for people, not corporations," Taylor said.Pointing to endorsements of Cuomo earlier this month by former President Bill Clinton and former three-term New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, she charged that "the old guard establishment of the Democratic Party, fueled by billionaires, did everything they could to defeat Mamdani and they failed. They continue being wrong about everything, and they need to get out of the way and let a new generation lead."Matt Bennett, executive vice president for the moderate Democrat-aligned group the Third Way, acknowledged that Mamdani "focused on affordability," which he said is "great."Bennett added Mamdani is "young, charismatic, a great communicator. All that is great. We want to see that."But Bennett told Fox News "the problem is he has the wrong prescription."On the primary campaign trail, Mamdani proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City's vast bus system, making City University of New York "tuition-free," freezing rents on municipal housing, offering "free childcare" for children up to age 5 and setting up government-run grocery stores. And in a CNN interview Thursday night, he said, "I have many critiques of capitalism. There must be a better distribution of wealth for all of Gods children in this country."Bennett noted that "Republicans are already weaponizing" Mamdani's primary victory to take aim "against other Democrats."Veteran Republican strategist Colin Reed told Fox News Mamdani's win is "a messaging nightmare that's going to unfold in real time from now until the midterms."But Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida doesn't think what happened in heavily blue New York City will resonate in crucial swing districts, like his seat."Ithink the idea that you can extrapolate what happened there and roll that out to 49 other states, to the suburbs, the politics are very different," Moskowitz told reporters on Capitol Hill this week. And Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York, who represents a suburban swing district that also includes a sliver of New York City, took to social media to say he "had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani" before the primary."Those concerns remain," Suozzi said.Fox News' Deirdre Heavey contributed to this report.

"We extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who were lost and all those who have been affected by this tragic event."MULTIPLE PEOPLE DEAD, 2 MISSING AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES AT VACATION HOTSPOTThe party had set out in a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft powerboat near D.L. Bliss State Park on Saturday, June 21, the department said. Initially greeted by clear skies and calm waters, the groups outing took a deadly turn when a powerful storm swept across the lake.According to the U.S. Coast Guard, winds reached 30 knots with swells as high as eight feet. The boat capsized just before 3 p.m., tossing all ten occupants into the frigid waters of Lake Tahoe. Two unidentified individuals survived the accident. Both were wearing life jackets when they were rescued and transported to a local hospital, the department said."The most common mistake boaters make is not being aware of the forecasted weather," BM1 Justin Smith, executive petty officer of Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe, said in a statement to Fox News Digital. "Life jackets being worn continue to be the primary survivability factor."DOORDASH EXECUTIVE AMONG VICTIMS IN LAKE TAHOE BOATING DISASTEREmergency response teams from multiple jurisdictions, including North Tahoe Fire, California State Parks, Washoe County Sheriffs Office, and the United States Coast Guard, mounted a massive search-and-rescue operation. In the wake of the tragedy, officials reiterated the importance of weather awareness, life jacket use and float plans."Weather in the Tahoe Basin can be unpredictable and change quickly," warned Smith. "Mariners should be hesitant to operate in conditions where wind advisories or small craft advisories have been issued."Six bodies were recovered on the day of the incident. The remaining two were found in the days that followed, with the final recovery made on Monday afternoon."The success of the search and recovery operations would not have been nearly as efficient without the assistance of our partner agencies," the sheriffs office said. The recovery operations also required advanced divers and specialized teams such as the Wilderness Finder Search Dog Teams, the department said.In a statement to Fox News Digital, DoorDash mourned the loss of Joshua Pickles, calling him "a cherished colleague and beloved friend whose energy and compassion will be deeply missed.""No words can express the pain and anguish we feel knowing their lives were lost during what was meant to be a joyful time on the lake," Josh Pickles wife, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, said in the statement Tuesday to the Associated Press. "Our hearts go out to those who tragically lost their lives and the two survivors of this unexpected and deadly storm on Lake Tahoe."Josh Pickles wife had stayed at home taking care of their seven-month-old daughter, Sam Singer, a family spokesperson, told the outlet. The couple, who married in 2023, both worked at tech companies in San Francisco. Josh worked at DoorDash, and Jordan at Airbnb, Singer said.

Mamdani's primary win exposes Democrat divide as top leaders withhold endorsements
Zohran Mamdani's primary night success shocked the political establishment this week, exposing a generational divide among New York Democrats.New York Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi endorsed former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the race for City Hall on Tuesday night. The moderate Democrat confirmed Wednesday that he "had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani before [Tuesday], and that is one of the reasons I endorsed his opponent. Those concerns remain."While fellow self-described democratic socialist, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., threw her political weight behind Mamdani ahead of his primary win, national congressional Democratic leaders, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, did not outright endorse Mamdani after he declared victory."He ran an impressive campaign that connected with New Yorkers about affordability, fairness, & opportunity," Schumer said Wednesday. When pressed by reporters about his non-endorsement, Schumer refused to elaborate on what Mamdani's win meant for the Democratic Party's future.CITY-RUN GROCERY STORES, DEFUNDING POLICE, SAFE INJECTION SITES: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT NYC'S NEXT POTENTIAL MAYORJeffries congratulated Mamdani on his "decisive primary victory," and confirmed his plan to speak with the presumptive nominee the day after he declared victory. Yet, the House Democratic leader refused to formally endorse Mamdani.NEW YORK DEMOCRAT SAYS MAYORAL CANDIDATE ZOHRAN MAMDANI 'TOO EXTREME TO LEAD'Mamdani, whose campaign galvanized supporters on the ground and on social media, has proposed what conservatives deem radical ideas, like government-run grocery stores, free bus service, tuition-free city universities, rent freezes and free childcare, among others.Schumer and Jeffries did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's inquiry about their non-endorsements and whether the New York Democrats plan to rally behind Mamdani in November.Moderate New York Democrats, including Sen. Kristen Gillibrand and Reps. Ritchie Torres, Adriano Espaillat and Pat Ryan, are also yet to endorse Mamdani. Those congressional Democrats, as well as Suozzi, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital inquiry about whether they planned to endorse Mamdani.Torres had also endorsed Cuomo in the primary. And Espaillat congratulated Mamdani on Wednesday but did not outright endorse him.Rep. Dan Goldman, who endorsed state Sen. Zellnor Myrie in the Democratic primary, has not yet endorsed Mamdani since his primary win, and did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether he would.Meanwhile, longtime New York Democratic congressman, Jerry Nadler, clearly endorsed Mamdani on Wednesday, comparing his victory Tuesday to President Barack Obama's political rise."Zohran is someone who will be a partner with me in Washington to take on Donald Trump. Ive spoken to him today about his commitment to fighting antisemitism, and well work with all New Yorkers to fight against all bigotry and hate," Nadler said, in an apparent reference to accusations that Mamdani is antisemitic, particularly over his refusal to condemn the controversial rallying cry, "Globalize the intifada."Like Suozzi, New York Democrat Rep. Lauren Gillen refused to endorse Mamdani, writing on social media Wednesday, "Socialist Zohran Mamdani is too extreme to lead New York City.""His entire campaign has been built on unachievable promises and higher taxes, which is the last thing New York needs. Beyond that, Mr. Mamdani has called to defund the police and has demonstrated a deeply disturbing pattern of unacceptable antisemitic comments which stoke hate at a time when antisemitism is skyrocketing. He is the absolute wrong choice for New York."Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani for comment.Sources confirmed to Fox News Digital Thursday that Cuomo is not dropping out of the race. The former governor will keep the spot he secured earlier this year on the "Fight & Deliver" ballot line. But the sources said that Cuomo had not committed yet to running an active general election campaign through the summer and into the autumn. And Mayor Eric Adams announced his re-election campaign Thursday on the steps of New York City Hall. He decided to run as an independent amid low approval ratings and his since-dropped federal corruption charges.Former federal prosecutor Jim Walden is also running as an Independent, and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa will once again be the Republican nominee in November's mayoral election.

Pentagon unveils $961B budget request: Fund for Golden Dome, missiles and drones, fewer F-35 jets
The Pentagon unveiled details of its $961 billion budget request on Thursday, a budget roadmap that may deprioritize new F-35 fighter jets in favor of next-generation aircraft and drones. The budget would reach that figure through$848.3 billion in its discretionary defense budget and an additional $113 billion through reconciliation, the "One Big Beautiful Bill" the Trump administration is trying to muscle through Congress right now.The parallel budget requests include $25 billion for Golden Dome, President Donald Trumps homeland missile defense initiative. And as the Trump administration moves forward with the Air Forces 6th-gen fighter jet, dubbed the F-47, the budget calls for a reduction in the next purchase of F-35s from 74 to 47. It requests $3.4 billion for the F-47 program.TRUMP UNVEILS GOLDEN DOME MISSILE SHIELD, BLINDSIDES KEY SENATORSOfficials are still unsure whether the Navys next-gen fighter jet, F/A-XX, will move forward."Waiting for a decision from the secretary of the Navy, secretary of defense, and the president," a defense official told reporters. "That's an active conversation, whether to continue with the program or not."The program will proceed right now with "minimal funding" for design, the official said.Asked whether other service branches may get a different variant of the F-47 instead of entirely separate programs, the official said the idea is under consideration."I would say pretty much everything is under consideration to get the [tactical] air capability that our war fighters need as quickly as possible, and that's really what we're looking at the most, is the schedule of all these programs."The budget requests funding for three new Navy ships through the discretionary request and another 16 through the reconciliation request.REPUBLICANS SQUABBLE OVER TRUMP SPENDING PLAN AS FISCAL YEAR 2026 LOOMS: 'STAY UNTIL WE PASS IT'The proposed budgetseeks $197.4 billion for the Army, $292.2 billion for the Navy, $301.1 billion for the Air Force and $170.9 billion defense-wide. In the Air Force budget request is $40 billion for Space Force, a 30% increase from fiscal year 2025.The unusual budget structure, which officials classify as "one budget, two bills," is partof a broader $1 trillion defense strategy when combined with national security spending at the Department of Energy. Administration officials have been working overtime to convince lawmakers to pass the One Big Beautiful bill by July 4.The budget asks for a 3.8% pay raise for troops, and it reveals plans to cutits civilian employee workforce by 7,286 people. The Pentagon plans to continue to invest in munitions and weapons systems: the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile Extended Range and Long Range Anti-Ship missile, which have longer ranges and may be more effective in the Pacific but it seeks far fewer Precision Strike Missiles. The budget boosts spending on low-cost small drones which have proven effective in the war between Russia and Ukraine. The E-7 radar plane will be cut, the senior defense official confirmed,"due to significant delays with cost increases from $588 million to $724 million per aircraft and survivability concerns in this contested environment."In an ideal world, Congress would pass 12 separate appropriations bills before the start of the fiscal year on October 1. But in recent years, it has often punted the headache down the road with continuing resolutions, or bills that temporarily fund the government at the previous years levels, and omnibuses, sprawling bills that contain funding for all 12 agencies in one up-or-down vote.
