Florida wildlife authorities have released a new report on a vicious May alligator attack that took the life of a Michigan woman.Cynthia Diekema, 61, was killed while canoeing with her husband near Lake Kissimmee State Park when they unknowingly approached an 11-foot, four-inch alligator lurking beneath the surface, a report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says, according to KETV.FWC said that the alligator thrashed underneath the canoe, causing the pair to be thrown into the water.ALLIGATOR INJURES GIRL SWIMMING IN POPULAR SUMMER STATE PARK DESTINATION"The victim was immediately bitten on the torso, and efforts by her husband to assist her were unsuccessful," according to the report. "The alligator performed a death roll and swam away with the victim."FWC alligator trappers later caught the alligator.Amid the release of the report, FWC announced a new partnership with GatorWise, described as "a new public awareness campaign that aims to promote realistic public perceptions about alligators and assist the public in taking appropriate actions to minimize conflict," in order to help Floridians navigate the waters during the summer, when alligator attacks become more common."Florida has seen tremendous population growth in recent years, with many people living or recreating near water," Matthew Nichols, FWC alligator management program coordinator, said of the partnership. "Because alligators can be found in nearly any water in Florida, its safest to always assume theyre present. FWC's 2025 statistics show that there have been two "major" alligator bites through May, one of them being fatal. There have been no "minor" bites this year.Last year, there were a total of 11 bites, nine considered major and two minor, with no fatalities. In 2023, there were 23 alligator bites, 18 major and five minor, with two fatalities.The GatorWise website provides basic instructions, like assuming alligators are present when near the water, not feeding alligators, not disposing of fish or food scraps in the water, not attempting to pick up an alligator, and ensuring pets aren't wandering shorelines off-leash."Alligators are native to many wetlands of the southeastern United States, making them critical to the health and balance of these ecosystems," the site says. The Supreme Court held Friday that a group of Maryland parents are entitled to opt their children out of school lessons that could violate their beliefs in a case centered on religious freedom.The justices decided 6-3 along ideological lines in Mahmoud v. Taylor that parents can exclude their children from a Maryland public school system's lessons that contain themes about homosexuality and transgenderism if they feel it conflicts with their religious faith."A government burdens the religious exercise of parents when it requires them to submit their children to instruction that poses a very real threat of undermining the religious beliefs and practices that the parents wish to instill," Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority. "And a government cannot condition the benefit of free public education on parents acceptance of such instruction."Montgomery County Public Schools began incorporating books into their preschool through 12th grade language arts curriculums a few years ago that featured "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer characters," the school districts attorneys told the Supreme Court. The attorneys said the school district did this as part of an effort to be "culturally responsive" and teach lessons that encourage "equity, respect, and civility."PROTESTS ERUPT AS SUPREME COURT CONSIDERS CASE ON LGBT BOOKS IN SCHOOLThe Maryland parents who sued said in their petition to the high court that the school board introduced books to their elementary school students that promoted "gender transitions, Pride parades, and same-sex playground romance."The parents said the school board initially allowed parents to opt their children out of lessons involving those books but then ceased doing that.They also said the presence of the books created "indirect pressure to forgo a religious practice," which created enough of a burden to violate their religious freedom rights.KEY SCOTUS PARENTAL RIGHTS CASES DRAW MCMAHON, MOMS FOR LIBERTY TO RALLY ON COURT STEPSThe parents who brought the suit span a range of religious backgrounds. Tamer Mahmoud and Enas Barakat are Muslim, while others fall under different denominations of Christianity.During oral arguments, Justice Clarence Thomas questioned an attorney representing Montgomery County schools about whether the books simply existed in the classroom or were actively introduced to the students.The attorney indicated that teachers gave lessons to the students involving the books in question five times during the school year.Rosalind Hanson, a member of the conservative group Moms for Liberty, told Fox News Digital during a recent interview in front of the Supreme Court that she and other parents who helped bring the case were "not trying to change the curriculum" for parents who did support their children being exposed to the books."The majority of states across the country have said you can have an opt-out for these very sensitive issues and topics, especially because of the religious component, but also because of the age appropriateness," Hanson said.This is a breaking news story. Sean "Diddy" Combs' defense team began closing arguments Friday as the seventh week of the rapper's sex trafficking and racketeering trial comes to a close.Marc Agnifilo, Diddy's attorney, accused the prosecution of bringing a "fake trial" against the "Last Night" rapper as the government went after his "private sex life."Diddy's defense claimed none of the prosecution witnesses testified to engaging in racketeering. "We're here because of money," he stated to the jury.Agnifilo claimed what happened between Diddy and Cassie was domestic violence, not sex trafficking. "I really don't want to do that. So I just wanted to put on the record that we think it would be objectionable and crossing a line for any summation to bring up politics or current events or the propriety of this prosecution and the use of government resources. I would hope that Mr. Agnifilo would not cross over those lines, but I just wanted to say that if he did, I would object in the middle of his summation and ask the Court to instruct the jury to disregard any comments like that. Two human smugglers who were convicted of causing the deaths of 53 illegal migrants whom they were trying to sneak into the U.S. in a sweltering hot tractor trailer have been sentenced to decades in prison.Felipe Orduna-Torres, 32, and Armando Gonzalez-Ortega, 55, were convicted in March by a federal jury for their roles in the June 2022 migrant smuggling tragedy near San Antonio, Texas, according to the Justice Department. The tragedy became the nation's deadliest smuggling attempt across the U.S.-Mexico border.On Friday, Orduna-Torres, who is in the U.S. illegally, was given two life sentences and an additional 20 years on a third count to be served consecutively.Gonzalez-Ortega was sentenced to 87.5 years in prison, while both defendants were also fined $250,000 by Judge Orlando Garcia on Friday. Gonzalez-Ortega is in the U.S. illegally.DRIVER IN TEXAS MIGRANT SMUGGLING RUN THAT LED TO THE DEATHS OF 53 PEOPLE PLEADS GUILTY"You will never see the light of day, such a shame. You couldve been doing other things," the judge said to the pair. "To people out there who are smuggling people, if theres a death and an injury you will get sentenced for a very, very long time."The pair were sentenced after 66 migrants were packed into the tractor trailer without air conditioning as the temperature soared to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the migrants inside the trailer lost consciousness, while others clawed at the walls, trying to escape.By the time the tractor trailer reached San Antonio, according to the evidence presented at trial, 48 migrants had already died. Another five migrants died after being transported to local hospitals.In total, 53 people died, including six children and a pregnant woman. The migrants were from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.Chilling victim statements were read out in court, including from Marcos Antonio Velasco of Mexico, the mother of an 18-year-old victim."This is the greatest pain of my life it will never go away I cant believe I had to bury my own son. It is like I am dead, even though I am living," she said.Orduna-Torres and Armando Gonzalez-Ortega were charged with conspiring to transport migrants resulting in death, transporting migrants who died and transporting others who suffered serious injuries and were placed in grave danger.Officials said it was part of a much bigger smuggling organization responsible for transporting more than 1,000 illegal migrants into the country.MAN ARRESTED NEAR LA FIRES WITH POSSIBLE BLOWTORCH IS AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT: ICE SOURCESA third man, Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, described as a leader of the smuggling ring, was recently extradited from Guatemala to face federal charges, including conspiracy and aiding and abetting smuggling resulting in death and injury.He allegedly facilitated the fatal journey of at least three of the deceased migrants.He had charged the migrants and their families around $12,000 to $15,000 for the perilous journey.Five men previously pleaded guilty to felony charges in the smuggling case, including the truck driver, Homero Zamorano Jr., who was found hiding near the trailer in some bushes. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Several others have been charged in Mexico and Guatemala.Thousands of lives have been lost in recent decades as people attempted to crossthe U.S.border from Mexico.Ten migrants died in 2017 after they were trapped inside a truck parked at a Walmart in San Antonio. Judges in those districts had blocked Trump's ban on birthright citizenship from taking force nationwide which the Trump administration argued in their appeal to the Supreme Court was overly broad.The Supreme Court's arguments in May focused little on the merits of those universal injunctions and on Friday, the court made clear that it is not ruling on whether the birthright citizenship orders are constitutional."The applications do not raise and thus we do not address the question whether the Executive Order violates the Citizenship Clause or Nationality Act," Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, writing for the majority. "The issue before us is one of remedy: whether, under the Judiciary Act of 1789, federal courts have equitable authority to issue universal injunctions.""A universal injunction can be justified only as an exercise of equitable authority, yet Congress has granted federal courts no such power," she added.Coney Barrett took a swipe at Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, saying that her argument was " at odds with more than two centuries worth of precedent, not to mention the Constitution itself. We observe only this: [Jackson] decries an imperial Executive while embracing an imperial Judiciary."In her dissent, Jackson warned that the ruling allowed the president to "violate the Constitution" and presented "an existentia threat to the rule of law."
