Utah man allegedly used phony cartel threats to hold pregnant girlfriend and family hostage for months: report
A Utah man is accused of holding his pregnant girlfriend and her family hostage in their home for six months under the lie that "cartel" members were pursuing them.Dominic Garcia, 23, was arrested Saturday and booked on 28 charges, most of them felonies. Among them were seven each of kidnapping and assault, according to The Associated Press.SIX OHIO SUSPECTS ACCUSED OF TORTURING MAN IN WEEKLONG HOTEL KIDNAPPING: 'EXTREMELY DISTURBING'The situation reportedly began when one of the alleged captives called the police, claiming they were being held against their will and that they "weren't able to take it any longer," according to KSTU, a Salt Lake City-based FOX affiliate.Upon arriving at the home, police found the family holding Garcia at gunpoint, and he was promptly taken into custody.Garcia reportedly moved in with the family in December. Shortly afterward, he allegedly claimed his own family had ties to a cartel, and that his new housemates had to do as he told them to remain in the cartel's good graces."Over time, Garcia created an atmosphere of fear and control, falsely creating affiliations with a dangerous cartel," said Sgt. Aymee Race of the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake.UTAH COLD CASE SOLVED 40 YEARS AFTER 18-YEAR-OLD WOMANS MURDER THANKS TO DNA SAMPLE, POLICE SAY"He claimed his people were watching and any defiance could result in their deaths," she continued.Garcia reportedly began carrying a handgun around the house, repeatedly telling family members that the cartel would kill them if they did not do as he told them.Garcia is also accused of forcing his alleged victims out of the home for a month under the pretense that his family had made a bad deal with the cartel and needed to flee.Upon their return, a family member texted a friend to explain where they had gone, KSTU reports. Upon seeing the text, Garcia allegedly lashed out, later claiming he'd brought one of the hostages "into the company" and that he'd kill them if they went astray.Family members also accuse Garcia of checking their phones and confronting them over messages he didn't approve of and limiting who could leave the home and for how long. He is also said to have run a "boot camp"-like operation that entailed working out five times a day, taking ice baths and facial submersion to the point where family members were left unable to breathe.Garcia, who as of Monday was being held without bail, "said that he continued this lie for several months because he did not know how to stop it in fear that they would not like him," the police affidavit reads.Sgt. Race declined to provide any additional comment on the case when reached by Fox News Digital. The Associated Press and KSTU contributed to this report.

WATCH: Leftist protesters flood Capitol Hill office building as big, beautiful budget bill vote looms
Protesters affiliated with several leftist groups, including the People's Action Institute, flooded a Capitol Hill office building in Washington on Wednesday as the House prepared to vote on the "big, beautiful" budget bill backed by President Donald Trump.Capitol Police have responded to several protests over Medicaid cuts that disrupted activities in Capitol office buildings over the last several weeks. On Wednesday, protesters affiliated with the Peoples Action Institute shut down a hallway in the Longworth House Office Building as part of a protest against cuts to Medicaid in the budget bill.In a video obtained by Fox News Digital, protesters could be seen blocking a hallway and shouting, "We got the power," while raising their fists. Many protesters held signs reading "Medicaid Cuts Kill."TRUMP SAYS GOP IS UNIFIED AS HE DELIVERS 'PEP TALK' FOR 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL'Capitol Police quickly cleared the protesters from the building; there appeared to be no arrests.Democrats have been shining a spotlight on portions of the budget bill that restructure Medicaid, the nearly 60-year-old federal government program that provides health insurance for roughly 71 million adults and children with limited income. The cuts to Medicaid, being drafted in part as an offset to pay for extending Trump's 2017 tax cut law that is set to expire this year, include a slew of new rules and regulatory requirements for those seeking coverage. Among them are a new set of work requirements for many of those seeking coverage.Wednesdays protest was not the only one that has disrupted activity in the Capitol office buildings this month. Fox News Digital reported on Medicaid protesters disrupting a budget markup by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 13.Video taken by Fox News Digital of the protests showed Capitol Police attempting to gain control of the situation, shouting repeatedly, "If youre not getting arrested, then go!"HOUSE GOP UNVEILS MEDICAID WORK REQUIREMENTS IN TRUMP'S 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL'The video also shows a woman in a wheelchair being removed from the committee chamber while screaming, "They want to kill the disabled, they want to kill the sick, they want to kill the veterans who have fought for us."Amid the chaos, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., spurred on the crowds, saying, "Keep fighting, stay strong, were not going to let them take away healthcare. You are leading the way. Thank you very much."In response to criticism about disrupting activity in the congressional office buildings, Unai Montes-Irueste, a spokesperson for the Peoples Action Institute, told Fox News Digital that "Medicaid cuts kill. Nothing is more disruptive than death."Montes-Irueste said "there is no congressional district in the country that supports ripping healthcare coverage away from Medicaid recipients so that Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg can buy new yachts."CAPITOL POLICE ARREST PROTESTERS DISRUPTING BUDGET MARKUP AS CORY BOOKER THANKS THEM FOR DEFENDING MEDICAIDDespite the accusations that Republicans want to cut Medicaid, Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, the chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told Fox News Digital this month that "Republicans are ending waste, fraud and abuse in Medicaid so the most vulnerable get the care they need."Hudson said that "Democrats are lying to protect a broken status quo that lets illegal immigrants siphon off billions meant for American families. Were strengthening Medicaid for future generations by protecting taxpayers and restoring integrity."The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the budget bill sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the timing dependent on passage of a rules resolution from the House Rules Committee.

Tapper admits feeling 'humility' about past Biden coverage as liberals disparage new book
CNN host Jake Tapper has acknowledged "humility" about his past coverage of Joe Biden, although that hasn't stopped criticism of his and Axios reporter Alex Thompson's new book about the cover-up of the former president's decline while in office."I think some of the criticism is fair, to be honest," Tapper told CNN last week as he was pressed on the criticisms of himself and the book. "Of me, certainly. Im not going to speak for anybody else, but knowing then what I know now, I look back at my coverage during the Biden years and I did cover some of these issues, but not enough. I look back on it with humility."Tapper and Thompson's new book, "Original Sin: President Bidens Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again," was released on Tuesday. Tapper has admitted to insufficiently reporting on Bidens health concerns as his past coverage of the administration has been criticized by conservatives."And so, look, she was right, and I was wrong," Tapper told NPR of a 2020 back-and-forth he had with Lara Trump, who was President Donald Trump's campaign adviser at the time. "And I look back at that exchange, and not just that, but my coverage in general - with humility. I don't - I mean, I did cover this. I can point to times, where, you know, I asked him this, or I asked him that, or I pointed this out to this person or whatever.SHIELDING BIDEN: JOURNALISTS SHED LIGHT ON THE MEDIA'S COVER-UP OF A WEAKENED PRESIDENT"But knowing what I know now, I barely scratched the surface. Very few people outside the conservative media world were doing so," he said Tuesday. In a separate interview on CBS, he said conservative media was "all over this."Comedian Jon Stewart called out CNN on Monday for relentlessly promoting the book and slamming the network for advertising "a book about news they shouldve told you was news a year ago for free.""Dont news people have to tell you what they know when they find it out? Isnt that the difference between news and a secret?" Stewart asked. "You wont believe what we found out! No, thats why Im watching. Breaking news in a week.""Youve prepared an entire smorgasbord based on what you thought would be a relatively uncomplicated story about mental decline. News has the countdown clock, they got the book graphics, they got the CNN Happy Meal tie-in toys, but now doing the story seems almost disrespectful," Stewart said. "Can CNN thread the needle? How do you pivot from excitedly promoting your anchors book to somberly and respectfully promoting your anchors book?"LIBERAL COLUMNIST SAYS THAT DENYING 'BIDEN'S INFIRMITY' WAS SIGN OF DEMOCRATS' 'ORIGINAL SIN' IN 2024 CAMPAIGNRadio host Charlamagne Tha God, a liberal who repeatedly spoke out against Biden and concerns about his age on the campaign trail despite his disdain for Trump, said Tuesday that he was looking forward to reading the book but remained skeptical of Tapper."Im looking forward to reading it because I want to see if people like Jake Tapper hold themselves and their networks, like CNN, accountable for how much they didnt report on," he said during his "Breakfast Club" show. "Because theyre all complicit in not calling a thing a thing in regards to President Biden.""The View" co-host Joy Behar slammed CNN on Tuesday for "hawking" the book, and wondered when Tapper would write a book about Trump's decline. Co-host Sunny Hostin also focused her criticism on Trump officials who made money on books about the administration after Trump's first term.Whoopi Goldberg wondered why the book was important now and questioned the over 200 sources the authors spoke to, asking, "If youre telling me that hundreds of people knew that he was not able to do his job, then where the hell was everybody?"MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, a strong Biden supporter, pushed back on the authors over the notion of a "cover-up" while speaking to Tapper and Thompson on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."The first question posed to Tapper and Thompson by Brzezinski was, "is it fair to say that Joe Biden had a successful presidency, remarkable presidency, possibly even a historic presidency in his time in office?"Brezinski maintained that the MSNBC morning show covered Biden and his re-election campaign in real-time, and while she applauded Tapper and Thompson's reporting, questioned the contention of a "cover-up,""And one of the contentions you make is that thats sort of the media didnt do its part, or did like way too late. And whats not in the book, is the day after the debate. Joe, very painfully, immediately, says Biden should step out of the race. And it was really a big change for the direction of the show. I personally went on a very long plea for him to stay in the race, and I still stand by it," she said."Nobody agrees with me, but we debated this, and we covered this, and my point is that we did this in real time. There is definitely new information in this book, great reporting, but I want to understand why youre using words like cover up, which insinuates a crime or something. Was there a crime committed? Because were in an environment where we are covering an administration that is actually in office right now, that is pushing the limits of the law in every way," Brzezinski added.EX-CNN JOURNALIST SPEAKS OUT ON BIDEN COVER-UP, SAYS WHITE HOUSE AIDES MADE IT DIFFICULT ON PRESSTapper said he and Thompson cover Trump critically on a daily basis. Brzezinski pushed back, saying "You've given hours and hours to this book."Brzezinski and co-host Joe Scarborough then asked bluntly what the cover-up was. Thompson responded by asking if the pair were shocked by the former president's June debate performance, and they responded, "yes.""If there was not a cover-up, then you guys wouldn't have been shocked," Thompson said.Liberal influencer Harry Sisson praised Naomi Biden's criticisms of the book. Naomi, Hunter Biden's daughter and Joe Biden's granddaughter, issued a scathing rebuke, deeming it "political fairy smut" on social media."Just read a copy of this silly book, and if anyone is curious for a review from someone who lived it first-hand: this book is political fairy smut for the permanent, professional chattering class. The ones who rarely enter the arena, but profit from the spectacle of those that do. Put simply, it amounts to a bunch of unoriginal, uninspired lies written by irresponsible self promoting journalists out to make a quick buck," Naomi Biden wrote.Conservative critics have taken aim at Tapper since the announcement of his book, alleging he was part of the cover-up and "trying to re-write history" with his book. Journalist Mark Halperin has also called out Tapper, CNN and specifically, CNN media analyst Brian Stelter, for promoting the book.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE"Brian Stelter has been, over the course of the entire Biden presidency, one of the biggest critics of those on the right and those few people like me in the independent media who have tried to hold Joe Biden accountable," Halperin said. "He's accused us of, you know, being propagandists, of celebrating cheap fakes and deepfakes.""I don't understand someone whose job it is to hold the media accountable, to not hold, not just his own network, but every news organization in the country who, now it's clear, participated in a cover-up. Some because of threats, some because of a desire to help Joe Biden win," he added. "Massive cover-up."Figures on the right have not been quick to forget past media dismissals of Biden's issues. Fox News contributor Joe Concha told Fox News Digital the timing of the book was the "main reason why media is so distrusted these days.""It's all about ego and money and self-importance," he said.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPReached for a comment, a representative for the book pointed to Tapper's remarks on MSNBC on Wednesday that many of their sources with critical comments about Biden, including cabinet secretaries and high-ranking Democratic insiders, didn't feel comfortable speaking until after the 2024 election."Many of them expressed regret that they hadn't come forward until election day," he told "Morning Joe."

Air Force F-16 struck by drone during training flight over Arizona in 2023
A routine training flight over Arizona in January 2023 took an unusual turn when a U.S. Air Force F-16D was struck by what was initially reported as an unidentified object, but now U.S. defense officials say was a small drone.Fox News confirmed that the incident, which occurred near Gila Bend, Arizona, on Jan. 19, 2023, was a routine training mission and was witnessed by the instructor pilot seated in the rear of the two-seat aircraft.According to a U.S. defense official, the pilot observed a "mostly white and orange object" collide with the left side of the aircraft canopy, the transparent covering over the cockpit.Initially, the object was thought to be a bird, a common hazard for aircraft. But after conducting checks during the flight and a detailed inspection upon landing at Tucson International Airport, the crew found "zero evidence" of a bird strike.TRUMP VOWS ANSWERS ON MYSTERY DRONE SIGHTINGS AS EXPERT MAKES EERIE PREDICTIONWith no signs of feathers or biological debris, the pilots concluded the object was more likely a small unmanned aerial system (UAS), commonly referred to as a drone.FORMER DEFENSE OFFICIAL MAKES EARTH-SHATTERING UFO REVELATION AS UNEXPLAINED DRONES LEAVE MILLIONS ON EDGE"A conclusion was made by the aircrew that the aircraft was struck by a small drone," the U.S. defense official said. The drone's operator has not been identified, and the drone itself was not recovered. It is unknown who was flying it and whether it was being operated legally in the area. The U.S. defense official said this January 2023 incident was rare, and there have been no further reports of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) colliding with F-16s since. The strike resulted in no injuries or damage. The Department of Defense clarified the situation after earlier reports inaccurately claimed the aircraft was damaged and that the object was an unidentified object.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP
