America's largest remaining antebellum mansion burns down in devastating fire
Historic Nottoway Plantation, the largest antebellum mansion in the U.S., burned to the ground this week after a fire broke out on Thursday. There have been no reports of injuries or deaths connected to the fire.Fire crews worked to extinguish the flames with water reportedly being poured onto the rubble as long as 18 hours after the fire started, according to Fox 8. As of Saturday, the cause of the fire was still under investigation."Some staff members stated they had gone into the museum and there was smoke. When they returned, the whole room was in flames," Iberville Parish President Chris Daigle told Fox 8, adding that it was "a total loss."2 DEAD AFTER HOUSE BURNS DOWN IN NEW JERSEY FOLLOWING 'GIGANTIC EXPLOSION,' CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION UNDERWAYDaigle noted in a post on the Iberville Parish Governments Facebook page that "The loss of Nottoway is not just a loss for Iberville Parish, but for the entire state of Louisiana. It was a cornerstone of our tourism economy and a site of national significance."The 64-room mansion was built by John Hampden Randolph in the late 1850s, according to multiple sources. It sat on more than 53,000 square feet and in addition to the dozens of rooms it contained 365 doors and windows and 22 white columns, Fox 8 reported. The property overlooked the Mississippi River.NJ WILDFIRE SCORCHES 13,500 ACRES AS FIREFIGHTERS WORK TOWARD CONTAINMENTRandolph first arrived in Louisiana in 1841 and began by planting cotton, but ultimately shifted to sugar cane, according to the LSU Scholarly Repository. The scholarly repository article also notes that the mansion was named "Nottoway" after the county in Virginia where his ancestors lived.U.S. Department of the Interior records cited by Axios show that Randolph owned 155 slaves and 6,200 acres of land by 1860.In addition to the luxurious mansion, the property also featured several trees that are over 100 years old, several of which are more than 120 years old, according to Nottoway Plantations website. In modern times, the mansion and the surrounding property functioned as a museum, resort and wedding venue. Nottoway Plantations website states that it sat on 31 acres, which included 40 overnight rooms, a bar, a restaurant, event space, a pool, tennis courts and more."While its early history is undeniably tied to a time of great injustice, over the last several decades it evolved into a place of reflection, education, and dialogue," Daigle wrote in the Facebook post. "Since the 1980s, it has welcomed visitors from around the world who came to appreciate its architecture and confront the legacies of its era. It stood as both a cautionary monument and a testament to the importance of preserving history even the painful parts so that future generations can learn and grow from it."

Bill Maher tells Americans to stop pretending they have 'core convictions' and 'deeply held beliefs'
HBO host Bill Maher urged Americans to "get over the fantasy" that they are people of "core convictions and deeply held beliefs" on an episode of "Real Time" Friday night.Maher criticized Americans for flip-flopping on their beliefs, saying they base their values on what's popular with their political party."They only care which side is saying something," he said, citing electric vehicles (EVs) as an example."This car used to be 'fire.' Now it's on fire," Maher said while showing footage of Teslas being burned at a dealership.BILL MAHER'S GUEST APPLAUDS HOST'S TIRADE AGAINST 'WEAK AND WOKE' DEMS WHO THINK AMERICA IS 'CRINGE'"Back when Elon Musk was presumed liberal, liberals loved electric cars and conservatives hated them," he continued. "Then Elon went MAGA, and while the car market grew by 10% last month, sales of electric vehicles were down 5%, and not just Teslas, all EVs.""Conversely, MAGA Nation used to hate EVs two years ago," he added. "Seventy-one percent of Republicans said they would not consider buying an electric car. Trump said they were for, quote, radical left fascists, Marxists and communists. Now he's selling them on the White House lawn."The "Real Time" host then turned his focus to an issue on which he felt Democrats had changed their stance on due to politics: keeping kids in school. He referenced "An Abundance of Caution," a book by David Zweig, which detailed the detrimental effects closing schools had on children during the COVID-19 pandemic."Here's the author's takeaway line: 'The Academy of Pediatrics were very strongly in favor of getting kids into schools, but as soon as Trump came out in favor of reopening, they completely reversed their position," he quoted.Maher followed up with a tongue-in-cheek remark: "Hey, if you find yourself suddenly hating something you loved five minutes ago or vice versa, ask your doctor if ivermectin is right for you."BILL MAHER SAYS DEMS ARE DOOMED IF THEY WONT STAND UP TO RADICAL ANTI-ISRAEL PROPAGANDA FROM THE YOUNGHe brought up the controversy surrounding the drug during the pandemic, noting how public opinion shifted largely along party lines."It [Ivermectin] won the Nobel Prize in 2015 for what it did for humans, but whatever the point is, it's a drug, it's not a politician," Maher noted. "Drugs don't have political parties, although I do suspect Xanax is a Democrat."Staying on the topic of health, Maher criticized conservatives for supposedly switching their stance on public health over the last few years because of politics."Do people really want to put politics ahead of their very health?" he asked. "Let me answer that Yes. I know they do, because when Michelle Obama adopted as her first lady project to get America healthy again, Republicans went buck wild apes--- real housewives throw drinks in your face crazy against it because it was Michelle Obama who said it."CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREHe recalled conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh mocking the initiative by asking if Americans were "supposed to eat roots and berries and tree bark."But according to Maher, conservatives' views on public health completely shifted once U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was appointed to his new cabinet position."But now that Robert Kennedy, leader of the Make America Healthy Again movement, is in the Trump administration, tree bark good, f--- yeah make America healthy," he quipped. "Finally, somebody said it. And when I say somebody, I mean not a Black, liberal lady."Maher closed the segment by urging Americans to stop reflexively supporting or opposing positions based solely on who supports them."But until we get to where we can do that," he joked, "I just hope the Democrats come out strongly next week for dictatorship, coal mining, and making pot illegal."

Young Dems blame Biden and their own party for losing in 2024 as they distance themselves from the old-guard
The Democratic Party is finally saying the quiet part out loud: "Biden should not have run again."Revelations about President Joe Biden's cognitive decline and his administration's alleged cover-up have returned to the national conversation ahead of next week's release of CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios political correspondent Alex Thompson's book, "Original Sin: President Bidens Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again."Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., a 2024 presidential campaign surrogate for President Joe Biden, and considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, acknowledged on Wednesday that Biden should not have run for a second term. And Beto O'Rourke, one of Biden's 2020 Democratic primary competitors and the former congressman from Texas, joined the criticism this week, accusing Biden's re-election campaign of failing future generations of Americans.REP RO KHANNA TEES UP 2028 RIVALRY DURING POINTED SPEECH IN JD VANCE'S HOME STATEWhen pressed by Martha MacCallum on "The Story" on Wednesday about campaigning for Biden in 2024, Khanna said he hadn't had the full picture of Biden's health and mental acuity ahead of his disastrous debate performance, but he admitted, "We should be honest as a party that we made a mistake."DEM RISING STAR EYES VANCE AS KEY LONG-TERM THREAT: 'NEEDS TO BE DEFEATED'"I do think it's important that, given what has come out, that we take accountability," Khanna said. "Obviously, he should not have run," Khanna said.Responding to a series of interview clips from early 2024, when Khanna affirmed Biden's intention to run for re-election and described the president as "fully coherent," Khanna said he had been telling the truth."Of course, I didn't have the full picture," Khanna added.O'Rourke took Khanna's call for Democratic accountability a step further on "Pod Save America" this week, calling Biden's decision to run for re-election in 2024 a "terrible mistake.""Just to be clear: Biden should not have run again. And to be even more clear: He failed this country in the most important job that he had," O'Rourke said."In fact, the entire rationale for his presidency the first time, and the rationale he tried to sell us on for his attempt to run for re-election, Only I can stop Donald Trump. And he failed to do that, and it's not just you and me, but our kids and grandkids and the generations that follow that might have to pay the price for this. We might very well lose the greatest country that this world has ever known," O'Rourke said.An excerpt from Tapper and Thompson's book released by Axios this week revealed that Biden's declining health was "so severe that there were internal discussions about putting the president in a wheelchair, but they couldn't do so until after the election."In hindsight, Khanna and O'Rourke agreed that Democrats should have had an opportunity to launch their own presidential bids. And now that President Donald Trump has returned to the White House, and an already crowded field of potential 2028 Democratic candidates are mulling presidential campaigns, they said it's important to take accountability for 2024."Obviously, there should have been an open primary. And, I don't think that's very difficult that Democrats should just be straight up that he should not have run, now that we have all the facts. There should have been an open primary. I think to move on and move forward, it's important to take accountability and be straightforward with the American people," Khanna said.O'Rourke said America's future could be in the balance "in part because of the decision that Biden, and those around him, made to run for re-election instead of having an open primary where the greatest talent that the Democratic Party can muster could be on that stage to have a competition of ideas, and track-record and vision and really excite, not just Democrats, but the people of this country who did want change. I mean, if anything was clear coming out of 2024, they wanted change."The once-2020 Democratic presidential candidate, who is 52 years-old, said the Democrat's Biden failure creates a credibility problem."I think that credibility problem is going to persist up until when Democrats say, We f---ed up, and we made a terrible mistake,'" O'Rourke said.Despite O'Rourke's comments this week, he said in an email to supporters through his voting rights organization, Powered by People, last February that, "Donald Trump is the single greatest threat to our democracy. Our best chance to defeat him is to support Joe Biden in this election.""Amy and I voted for him in the Texas primary . . . and are looking forward to voting for him again in November," he added. "This president has done an extraordinary job of improving our economy, confronting the climate crisis, reducing childhood poverty and fending off the very worst of Donald Trump and the Republican Partys mounting attacks on our most fundamental freedoms."Another young Democrat and Biden's former National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, continued to defend his former boss at Politico's Security Summit on Thursday, dismissing an allegation that Biden had forgotten his name, and defending his leadership as commander-in-chief."What happened in that debate was a shock to me," Sullivan admitted. "I think it was a shock to everybody."A Biden spokesperson did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.Fox News Digital's Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.

Justice Department deal ends a ban on an aftermarket trigger, gun control advocates alarmed
The Trump administration will allow the sale of forced-reset triggers, which make semiautomatic rifles fire more rapidly, with the federal government ending a long-standing ban as part of a settlement that also requires it to return seized devices.DEMOCRAT GUN CONTROL PUSH PERSISTS WITH REINTRODUCTION OF ASSAULT WEAPONS BANThe agreement announced Friday by the Justice Department resolves a series of cases over the aftermarket trigger that the government had previously argued qualify as machine guns under federal law.The settlement is a dramatic shift in Second Amendment policy under the Republican administration, which has signaled it may undo many of the regulations that the previous administration of Democratic President Joe Biden had fought to keep in place in an effort to curb gun violence."This Department of Justice believes that the 2nd Amendment is not a second-class right," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.Gun control advocates said the settlement would worsen gun violence."The Trump administration has just effectively legalized machine guns. Lives will be lost because of his actions," said Vanessa Gonzalez, vice president of government and political affairs at GIFFORDS, a gun control group. There have been several legal battles over forced-reset triggers, which replace the typical trigger on an AR-15-style rifle. The government for years had argued they are essentially illegal machine gun conversion devices because constant finger pressure on the triggers will keep a rifle firing essentially like an automatic. The deal announced Friday was between the Justice Department and Rare Breed Triggers, which was previously represented by David Warrington, Trumps current White House counsel. Rare Breed Triggers argued that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was wrong in its classification and ignored demands to stop selling the triggers before being sued by the Biden administration."This victory is a landmark moment in the fight against unchecked government overreach," Lawrence DeMonico, the group's president, said in a statement. "The ATF and DOJ tried to silence and bury us not because we broke the law, but because I refused to bend to the will of a tyrannical administration."NRA LEGISLATIVE EXPERT SAYS GUN RIGHTS COULD SEE 'MOST MONUMENTAL' WIN IN CONGRESS SINCE 2005Under the settlement, Rare Breed Triggers has agreed not to develop such devices to be used on handguns, according to the Justice Department. The settlement requires the ATF to return triggers that it had seized, or that owners had voluntarily surrendered to the government.
