DAVID MARCUS: Why do elite universities take in students tied to foreign foes? Money, of course
For centuries, the traditional role of elite universities like Harvard has been to train the next generation of leaders in every field of endeavor, to hold before them an open door to power and influence. So why on Earth are we holding that door open to communist Chinese nationals?I had a good friend in high school, sharp as a tack, double legacy at Yale, graduated Harvard Law and by 30 she was at the State Department. The joke was, "Dont piss off Becca, she can pick up the phone and have you killed."HARVARD'S ENDOWMENT HOLDS $7 MILLION PER STUDENT, STILL RECEIVES $550M FROM GOVT ANNUALLYThe point here is that, for better or worse, and it's often the latter, graduates of top schools are meant to create a class of people who lead the country, who lead its industries and sciences, who stay at the Princeton Club in midtown, and wear their college ties.A top American degree opens up a world of the powerful that most Americans dont even know exists, much less ever interact with. Yet thousands and thousands of communist Chinese nationals are invited to this table every year. Why?There may have been a time when this influx of foreign students could be seen as exerting informational power around the globe, the idea being these students will go home and spread the gospel of democracy, free markets, and blue jeans. But lets not kid ourselves, these scions of Chinese Communist Party members who pay their way at Harvard arent going home and creating movements for democracy in Beijing, not if they want to make it to grad school alive and well.In fact, we are the decided losers in this informational power exchange, as not just the Chinese, but Qataris, and 10,000 Iranian students for good measure, bring ideas and attitudes that undermine American foreign policy to the doorstep of the very people who will implement it.This brings us back to the question: Why are we doing this? Why are we training our foes and giving them access to the inner corridors of American power, and Im sure nobody will be shocked that the answer is money.Foreign interests lavish our top universities with gifts like a rich guy who got caught cheating on his wife. In just the last five years, the Harvard Crimsonreports $151 million from foreign governments and over a billion from foreign donors flowed to Cambridge. For hundreds of years, Harvard had educated the nation's great industrialists, financiers, and business magnates who kept the coffers of its endowment, still at a robust $52 billion, overflowing. But the blue-blood spigot is running dry.No, the non-binary womyns studies majors at the Harvard Divinity School are not going to be donating a new football stadium anytime soon. For that, these institutions have learned to rely on foreign money, and we all know that money aint free. The money buys influence, it buys some say in how our nation conducts itself. During COVID, with a few notable exceptions, our countrys entire healthcare apparatus just nodded along slavishly to every lie China and its mouthpiece the World Health Organization uttered. Why do you think that happened? It happened because China pays for research. It happened because China infiltrates the highest levels of our society, and sadly, they have become quite expert at it.Secretary of State Marco Rubio is obviously right to insist that we vigorously investigate any student from any nation that is a political or ideological foe of the United States, and frankly, any association with the Chinese Communist Party should be a dealbreaker. The first Harvard graduate to become the president of the United States was John Adams, who once famously wrote of his revolutionary adventures, "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONBut today, it is our sons and daughters losing opportunities to study mathematics and philosophy to people from countries that hate America, and it is also those countries which stand the most to gain in terms of politics and war.American universities need to be American universities, not cosmopolitan, non-affiliated islands of corrupt foreign influence, and if the Harvards of the world cant be that, then places like conservative Hillsdale College or the University of Austin may well need to replace them.If Harvard and other storied elite universities want to return to serving the mission of helping America to be great, it would be welcome. But in the meantime, we dont have to give them taxpayer money, and we dont have to let them invite our enemies into the inner circle of American power.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM DAVID MARCUS

Huckabee slams French-backed Palestinian statehood push at UN, says US-Israel are 'inseparably' linked
EXCLUSIVE - The United States will not participate in a conference next month in New York City hosted by France and Saudi Arabia aimed at promoting the recognition of a Palestinian state, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview in Jerusalem earlier this week."Its incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out and present something that I think increasingly Israelis are steadfast against."Oct. 7 changed a lot of things. If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I have a suggestion for themcarve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation. And I find it revolting that they think they have the right to do such a thing.TRUMPS MIDDLE EAST TRIP HANDED ISRAEL A HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY IF IT CHOOSES TO ACT, EXPERTS SAY"I hope they will reconsider but the U.S. will not participate. It simply will not be a part of such a ruse," he added.Huckabee, commenting on recently reported tensions between the two close allies, noted there may be disagreements between the Trump administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus government, but there should be no fear of a rupture in bilateral ties."I dont think pro-Israel Americans need to be concerned that theres some rift between the United States and Israel. Are there sometimes differences of opinion on the next steps in the war in Gaza, getting the hostages home, or maybe to avoid an all-out war with Iran? Of course, thats natural," he said."But as far as the relationship between Israel and the U.S., that is not in any way at risk, nor is it in any way splintered or fractured. Its solid, it has to be. We dont have a choice. Its critically important that the United States maintains its partnershipand I use that word very deliberatelyits not a friendship, its not an alliance, its a partnership, which means we are yoked together in our intelligence sharing, military so many ways in which our nations are linked inseparably."On talks between Washington and Tehran, the ambassador described the Islamic Republic as "one of the if not the greatest, threats to world peace," warning that it poses a serious and immediate existential threat not only to Israel, but also to several Gulf nations and ultimately to the United States."The Iranians have said Israel is the Little Satan, but America is the Great Satan. Theyve always treated Israel as the appetizer and the United States as the entre," he said. "Its just important when people tell you over and over for 46 years they plan to kill you, you might want to start taking them seriously."Nevertheless, Huckabee expressed hope that ongoing nuclear negotiations between the two nations would be successful and avoid any kind of military conflict.IRAN WARNS ISRAEL AND US 'CAN'T DO A DAMN THING' TO THWART TEHRAN NUCLEAR AMBITIONS AS TENSIONS ESCALATE"But when diplomacy fails, the soldiers show up," he said."I find it hard to believe the Iranians, after all these years of pushing towards a nuclear device that is weaponized, would suddenly come to their senses and say we've changed. We don't want that anymore, but lets hope they do. But if they dont, the president has been incredibly clear that Iran is not going to have a nuclear weapon."On Israels ongoing war against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, heemphasized that the suffering could end immediatelyif Hamas chooses to act."All of us are hoping and praying that Hamas will finally give up all the hostages and release them, and then they will depart Gaza for good. If they do these two things, this is over," he said. "It could have been over on Oct. 8, 2023; it should have been. What they did was unthinkable, horrific, heinous, uncivilized, savage behavior."He noted that President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Hamas has no future in Gaza. "They cant rule it, they cant stay," said Huckabee."Israel has been clear that they are willing to put them on airplanes and fly them out in exile, they have a way out, but they dont have a way in. They have to go, and all hostages living and dead have to be returned," he added.Huckabee expressed hope that this would happen immediately.Speaking to Fox News Digital on Thursday, he said of the hostages, "This pin that I wear on my lapelone of the happiest days of my life will be when I can take this pin off and permanently put it away, never to wear it again, because that means all of the hostages have come home," he said.He also expressed confidence in the prospect of expanding the Abraham Accords, forged during Trumps first term, which normalized relations between Israel and four Arab states: the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. While not naming new countries considering joining, Huckabee said, "There are a number of nations that now realize that having enmity with Israel is meaningless," he said. "It is a delicate path for some countries; they cant go faster than their people are willing to go and accept but there is a great atmosphere and possibility that we will see some dramatic changes and big additions to the Abraham Accords."Tessa Hoyos contributed to this report.

NASCAR's Christian Eckes aims for breakthrough at Nashville during tough Xfinity season
Christian Eckes found his footing last year in the Craftsman Truck Series. He posted a third-place finish after winning three races and earning 22 top 10 finishes, but he made a major move. This year, the 24-year-old is in his first Xfinity Series season, and while he hasn't found similar success, he knew it was a necessary change.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"I felt like I had gotten to a point in the Truck Series where I wasn't content or happy with the success, but it definitely got to a point where I felt pretty comfortable about moving to the next level, and I felt like this was a great opportunity to go get in some different series with hopefully a ladder to Cup, as well," Eckes, who now races with Kaulig Racing, told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. To go along with his move to Xfinity, Eckes partnered with Celsius, the energy drink he says has given him huge boosts on race day."It's been a blast so far. I've been able to meet a lot of cool people and obviously drink some good drinks along the way. And Im looking forward to the future as well," Eckes said."It's helped me a lot. Some of these races are at night, or even in the morning, really. So getting that caffeine in definitely helps as well as the hydration packets. There's a lot of things that they do that help us succeed. So yeah, definitely a big part of our race weekends."Eckes admitted this season has not gone as he'd like. He has only six top 10 finishes this year."We're still trying to find our way," Eckes said. "Weve had some success here and there, have had some speed, but not on a consistent basis. So, that's kind of our No. 1 thing right now is to try to push that forward and get to where we feel like we should be, and that's contending on a weekly basis."This weekend, Eckes will be racing in Nashville, where he reached the pinnacle of success. He won there last year, and Kaulig has taken the checkered flag there before."Nashville should be a good place for us. I won the race last year in the Truck Series, so hopefully it's the weekend that we finally turned around," he said.Eckes admitted he was not a fan of Nashville in the past, but "leading every lap last year, I like it a little better now.""I've done it in a truck before, so hopefully I can repeat that success. Its gonna take a lot. The Xfinity Series is challenging to win. You gotta be perfect in every aspect or as close to perfect as you can be. Its gonna take a lot, but I feel confident in our team to do it."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X,and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Civil War spy Elizabeth Van Lew defined courage fighting for what she believed
In an age of instant accolades and viral valor, heroes are everywhere. Celebrities tearfully describing a difficult breakup on daytime TV are deemed heroic. You knew the word had lost all meaning when alleged murderer Luigi Mangione became a "hero" on social media for taking the life of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare. How is it that we have so lost the thread? Just who qualifies as a hero was on my mind as I began researching my book "Lincolns Lady Spymaster" several years ago. We were in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, our lives upended. I eagerly ditched the commute and worked from home but as the months in isolation slid by, I began to worry. How long could this go on for? The situation was more dire for many of the young women producers I had worked with in our offices in Manhattan. They were lonely and anxious, living alone in tiny New York apartments or at home in their childhood bedrooms. One young woman I knew started having panic attacks. KEVIN COSTNER REVEALS 'TRAGIC' TRUTHS UNCOVERED IN NEW DOCU-SERIES 'THE WEST'I wanted to help these co-workers cope but what could I do? Look, I reasoned with myself, women in this country have faced far more difficult challenges than a temporary lockdown (it had to be temporary, after all!). American women have survived wars, myriad financial panics and so many challenges. I decided I would find a subject, a real woman from our nations past, someone who lived through challenging times and not only survived but left her mark on the world. I wanted what we all want in a hero someone acting courageously, not for headlines or money or even public gratitude, but because they felt called to right a wrong regardless of consequences.I first learned of Elizabeth Van Lew the same way we find out about most new things, from a web search. An academic historian had written about her, and she was sometimes included in lists of the moonlight-and-magnolia-style of female civil war spies, the kind historians dont take too seriously. I was hooked when I learned she was a spymaster, and strikingly, a Southern belle who chose to stay faithful to the Union and who ran a spy ring for President Abraham Lincolns top general, Ulysses S. Grant, while living in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy.CIVIL WAR TAUGHT HOW TO INFLUENCE NEWS MEDIA. IT NEARLY COST LINCOLN RE-ELECTIONWhen I began, I thought of myself as knowledgeable about the era. I knew the bright lights, Lincoln, Grant, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. But this woman had left little trace. She was generally missing from much of the Civil War literature. James McPherson mentioned her not at all in his sweeping nearly 900-page history of the conflict, "Battle Cry of Freedom." I learned she had left a diary, where she spilled her fears and hopes during the war. I imagined myself writing a book about a woman whom society underestimates and throws obstacles in her path, a tale of uplift! But my research exposed a secret history a story Van Lew herself tried to cancel. Unlike other spies, she refused to write a book of her Civil War exploits after the war and conducted few newspaper interviews. I began to discover the real Elizabeth and she surprised me. I found she was complicated and made difficult, morally questionable decisions. She lied to friends and neighbors, brazenly stole secrets from some and bribed others. Although she was a supporter of both the Union and abolitionism, her family owned slaves. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONLate in the war, as she became frustrated at the pace of Union advances, she tried to convince Union war planners to abduct Confederate leadership. She was the kind of woman who could as easily inspect the body of a dead soldier at dawn under threat of discovery by the enemy as preside over a tea party, swapping gossip and passing canapes. And, yet she provided invaluable information to the Union and ran what historians have described as the most-effective spy ring on either side of the conflict. As I began writing the book, I recalled the fact that co-workers and friends had labeled me a hero when I went public with my diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer. While it felt nice to be called a hero, I never really accepted the idea. My fight with cancer was really an act of self-interest.ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S POSSESSIONS SELL FOR MILLIONS AS BLOODSTAINED GLOVES TOP AUCTIONWhat I saw in Elizabeth Van Lew was someone who acted with no self-regard, inviting risk after risk. Hers was not a Daniel Penny kind of courage, the kind of instant reaction to fight a physical threat on behalf of others that we all admire, but a more sustained battle of conscience and will. In this world, we need both kinds of heroes and could welcome more. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the Civil Wars end and Lincolns assassination. As we remember that tragic war, lets not forget the heroes that emerged, especially those that have remained in the shadows. Elizabeth Van Lew was one of tens of thousands of women who emerged to fight the war in their own way. Hundreds fought on the battlefield following husbands, brothers and fathers into service; women nursed the injured, others ran their family farms and businesses on their own for the first time.Van Lews story is a testament to the essence of true heroism: unwavering moral conviction, selfless action and the courage to stand against prevailing tides. In an era when the term "hero" is often diluted, her legacy reminds us that real heroes are those who, without fanfare, commit themselves to justice and humanity. Trump calls out Putin, accuses China of not honoring trade deal terms during 19th week in office
President Donald Trump put Russian President Vladimir Putin on notice, and issued some harsh words to China and their ongoing trade negotiations during his 19th week in office."What Vladimir Putin doesnt realize is that if it werent for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD. Hes playing with fire!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Tuesday morning.Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia and former Russian president, responded in kind and issued his own words of caution to the U.S."Regarding Trump's words about Putin playing with fire and really bad things happening to Russia. I only know of one REALLY BAD thing WWIII. I hope Trump understands this!" Medvedev wrote.WHITE HOUSE REVEALS POSSIBLE PENALTIES ON PUTIN AMID PEACE PUSH: WHATEVER IT TAKESTrumps remarks come as Russia has ramped up its attacks against Ukraine in recent weeks, and as the U.S. has sought to distance itself from the conflict between the two countries. Meanwhile, Trump said on Wednesday that time is limited for Putin to get serious about coming to the negotiating table and engage in peace talks. Otherwise, the U.S. might adopt a different approach, he said."Were going to find out whether or not hes tapping us along or not, and if he is, well respond a little bit differently, but it will take about a week and a half to two weeks," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.Heres what also happened this week:Trump accused China of violating an initial trade agreement that Washington and Beijing were hashing out in May. Following those negotiations, both countries agreed that the U.S. would cut down its tariffs against Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, and China would reduce its tariffs against U.S. imports from 125% to 10%.But Trump said that China hasnt followed the terms of the agreement, without disclosing specifics."The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US," Trump said in a social media post Friday. "So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!"'NO REASON' FOR NEW NUKES: TRUMP FLOATS DISARMAMENT TALKS WITH CHINA, RUSSIAU.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said after Trumps post in an interview with CNBC that China had failed to remove its non-tariff barriers, as outlined in the deal."The United States did exactly what it was supposed to do, and the Chinese are slow-rolling their compliance which is completely unacceptable and has to be addressed," Greer said on Friday.Meanwhile, China pressed the U.S. to reverse course and urged the U.S. to address its own mistakes."China once again urges the US to immediately correct its erroneous actions, cease discriminatory restrictions against China and jointly uphold the consensus reached at the high-level talks in Geneva," Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said in a Friday statement.Canada also could receive protection from Trumps so-called Golden Dome if it becomes part of the U.S. Trump has long pushed for Canada to become the 51st state, along with expressing interest in acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal.TRUMP CLAIMS CANADA CONSIDERING OFFER OF FREE GOLDEN DOME IN EXCHANGE TO BECOME 51ST STATE"I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State," Trump said in a Tuesday social media post.Trump has long touted setting up a Golden Dome, a defense shield initiative for the U.S. akin to the one Israel has protecting itself.

Minnesota softball player, parent speak out as trans pitcher dominates postseason
Minnesota's high school softball postseason has been overshadowed by the dominance of a transgender pitcher at Champlin Park High School. The pitcher led Champlin Park to the state tournament with a dominant shutout victory in the sectional final on Thursday. Meanwhile, a lawsuit by three anonymous female players has been filed against the state for allowing the player to compete. The law firm representing the plaintiffs, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), has provided statements from one of the female players about her experience facing the trans athlete.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"Hitting against him is not only a physical challenge but a mental, too. Its a mental battle knowing that he has an advantage in the sport that I grew up playing, making it hard to even want to hit against him. His ability to get outs and spin the ball is a strong advantage, but like I said its also incredibly mentally challenging knowing that youre competing against someone who has unfair advantages leaving you with little to no confidence," the player said."This issue has affected me in ways that I never imagined. Its simply unfair and I hate that nothing is happening to change that. Boys should not be able to take girls spots on teams just because they are capable of doing so. I hope that more girls affected by this issue will stand up against this."The anonymous player also called out Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison for aggressively defending trans inclusion in girls' sports in the state. Ellison has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and the U.S. Department of Justice over Trump's "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" executive order."Its really upsetting to know that [Ellison] isnt taking rights of girls and women seriously. He is allowing boys to compete with girls, and it is not safe and completely unfair. To know that AG Ellison is in complete support of letting boys and men take advantage of females in sports is absolutely disgusting and wrong," the player added.A local Minnesota parent of another player who had to face the athlete spoke out about the situation during an interview on OutKick's "The Ricky Cobb Show.""It really comes down to cowardice leadership at the local state and federal level," said Garret Gross, the father of a local player.HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE"Softball is different man, I'm telling you, these girls are strong, these girls are tough, but they're different than boys. At the highest levels, that ball is coming in 70-plus miles an hour from the pitcher's circle, which is only 43 feet away, and it's coming off that bat 8085 miles an hour, and it's not question of if or when there will be a catastrophic injury or death that occurs because of this imbalance. The only question really is, is how old will the girl be that's killed and what will her name be?"That's a strong statement, but that's where it's going to get to and that's going to be really the only thing that's going to make the public wake up here, and the question to all the apathetic people on the sidelines, why are you keeping quiet when we know this is going to happen?"Champlin Park's school district provided a statement to Fox News Digital defending the decision to allow the athlete to compete on the softball team."Throughout the entire season, and as the Rebels advance to the state tournament, it is important to note that all of the student athletes participating for the Champlin Park Softball team are eligible to compete in compliance with Minnesota State High School League rules and applicable state law. Due to data privacy laws, the District is not able to provide public comment regarding a specific student athlete," a statement from the Anoka-Hennepin School District stated."In addition, the District is named in an active lawsuit which limits what information can be shared."After Trump signed the "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports" executive order, the Minnesota State High School League announced it would defy federal law by allowing transgender athletes to continue playing in women's sports. Ellison then claimed at a press conference on April 22 that he received notice from the Department of Justice threatening legal action if the state did not follow the executive order, so the AG decided to sue first. The White House later responded to the lawsuit, condemning Ellison for taking legal action to enable trans inclusion."Why would a grown man sue the Trump administration to allow other biological males to participate in womens sports? This is creepy and anti-woman," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields told Fox News Digital.Minnesota's state legislature failed to pass the "Preserving Girls Sports Act" in early March, which would have stated that "only female students may participate in an elementary or secondary school level athletic team or sport that an educational institution has restricted to women and girls."Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
