DOUG SCHOEN: I'm a Harvard grad. Here's my take what Trump's doing right and wrong
The ongoing fight between the Trump administration and Harvard University has unfortunately taken on a life of its own.I say unfortunately, not because I believe the reforms President Donald Trump is demanding are wholly out of bounds they are not, by any means.Rather, I say this because, as an alum of both Harvard undergrad and law school and a longtime donor the rampant antisemitism on campus, as well as the universitys imperiousness, I cannot fault the White House for acting.STATE DEPARTMENT NOW SCRUTINIZING ALL VISA HOLDERS ASSOCIATED WITH HARVARDIndeed, there is a legitimate argument to be made that Harvard must be reined in.That being said, there are concerns unique to Harvard that separate it from other universities. These concerns range from its handling of antisemitism, its silencing of voices who do not conform to far-left orthodoxy, as well as who it has hired.Notably, the concerns surrounding Harvard did not originate with its handling of antisemitism in the wake of Hamas October 7th attack on Israel. It has long been the epicenter of Diversity, Education, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the U.S., to the point where the Supreme Court was forced to strike down its admissions criteria for being unfair to Asian students in June 2023.And yet, within just the past month, two serious incidents underscore how much further Harvard has to go in order to reform and redeem itself. First, the Harvard Law Review awarded a $65,000 grant to Ibraham Bharmal, after the Harvard Law School student was charged with assaulting an Israeli student, an incident caught on video. In effect, Harvard not only tolerated Bharmals antisemitism, but rewarded it with a taxpayer-funded grant after he assaulted another student solely because of his nationality and Jewish identity.Second, Harvard recently revoked the tenure of Francesca Gino, a professor of business administration - who ironically is "well known for studying honesty" as Pilar Arias noted after a four-year long fight over Ginos repeated falsification of data.To be clear, this is not to say that I agree with every action Trump has taken against Harvard. For example, blanket bans on accepting foreign students is excessive, but vetting their social media is inherently reasonable.Universities routinely do this for American students; thus it stands to reason Harvard should have the same or even stricter policy for foreigners. To that end, Harvard professor Steven Pinker recently published a piece in the New York Times which does a tremendous job at capturing the issues Harvard must address and the best ways to do so.Pinker, who makes his frustration towards the schools handling of antisemitism, free speech, hiring practices, and more very clear, makes one more key point: while Harvard has its "serious ailments," the reaction must also be calibrated. In other words, while Harvard should not have unfettered access to billions of dollars of taxpayer money, there is a real risk that across-the-board cuts harm Americas scientific prowess without producing the very necessary reforms Trump is demanding. There is ample opportunity for a more targeted approach that can force Harvard to make these necessary changes without destroying the schools leadership in many vital fields. For instance, grants to social sciences can be canceled without touching money that funds medical or scientific research into cancer or other diseases. And while I agree with Pinker on that and other points he makes, perhaps the most important thing he points out is that the only thing thus far that has spurred Harvard to take any steps towards change has been Trump.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONAs Pinker puts it, "The uncomfortable fact is that many of these reforms followed Mr. Trumps inauguration and overlap with his demands."Of course, it should not take the President of the United States to bring American universities inline with their own codes of conduct.Nor should it take the power of the White House to force Harvard to crackdown on the scourge of antisemitism and anti-American extremism that has overrun its campus. And yet, this is where we now find ourselves. It is my hope, as an alum, and as an American, that the Trump administration and Harvard come to a solution whereby the university realizes it cannot continue to permit or reward students who so blatantly violate the code of conduct, either of the university or of the United States.

What your blood quietly reveals about your eating habits
Blood and urine tests have been found to detect the amount of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) a person eats, according to new research.Using machine learning, scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified hundreds of metabolites (molecules produced during metabolism) that correlated with processed food intake. The team developed a "biomarker score" that predicts ultraprocessed food intake based on metabolite measurements in blood and urine, according to Erikka Loftfield, Ph.D., M.P.H., of the National Cancer Institute in Maryland.PREMATURE DEATH LINKED TO CERTAIN TYPE OF FOOD, STUDY REVEALSThe researchers drew baseline data from 718 older adults who provided urine and blood samples and reported their dietary habits over a 12-month period, as detailed in an NIH press release.Next, they conducted a small clinical trial of 20 adults. For two weeks, the group ate a diet high in ultraprocessed foods, and for another two weeks they ate a diet with no UPFs."In our study, we found that hundreds of serum and urine metabolites were correlated with percentage energy from ultraprocessed food intake," Loftfield told Fox News Digital. The findings were published in the journal PLOS Medicine.THE WORST FOODS TO BUY IN THE SUPERMARKET AND THE BETTER CHOICES INSTEADLarge-scale studies investigating the health risks of ultraprocessed foods often rely on self-reported dietary questionnaires, which can be prone to errors, per the NIH.The new blood and urine test helps to reduce human error by using objective biomarkers, a growing area of interest among researchers.Loftfield added, "It was surprising to find that UPF-correlated metabolites are involved in numerous and diverse biological pathways, underscoring the complex impact of diet on the metabolome."Ultraprocessed foods are defined as "ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat, industrially manufactured products, typically high in calories and low in essential nutrients," according to the NIH.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERChronic diseases, obesity and various forms of cancer have been linked to diets that are heavy in UPFs.Despite promising results, the researchers emphasized that the new method will require further validation before broader use.Since the current trial focused mainly on older adults, more research is needed across various age groups and diets, the experts said."Metabolite scores should be evaluated and improved in populations with different diets and a wide range of UPF intake," Loftfield acknowledged. This method could potentially be used in future research to link the consumption of processed foods with chronic diseases, according to the researchers. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/health"For individuals concerned about ultraprocessed food intake, one practical recommendation is to use nutrition facts labels to avoid foods high in added sugars, saturated fat and sodium, as this can limit UPF intake and align with robust scientific research on diet and health," Loftfield suggested.

Huckabee slams French-backed Palestinian statehood push at UN, says US-Israel are 'inseparably' linked
EXCLUSIVE - The United States will not participate in a conference next month in New York City hosted by France and Saudi Arabia aimed at promoting the recognition of a Palestinian state, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview in Jerusalem earlier this week."Its incredibly inappropriate in the midst of a war that Israel is dealing with to go out and present something that I think increasingly Israelis are steadfast against."Oct. 7 changed a lot of things. If France is really so determined to see a Palestinian state, I have a suggestion for themcarve out a piece of the French Riviera and create a Palestinian state. They are welcome to do that, but they are not welcome to impose that kind of pressure on a sovereign nation. And I find it revolting that they think they have the right to do such a thing.TRUMPS MIDDLE EAST TRIP HANDED ISRAEL A HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY IF IT CHOOSES TO ACT, EXPERTS SAY"I hope they will reconsider but the U.S. will not participate. It simply will not be a part of such a ruse," he added.Huckabee, commenting on recently reported tensions between the two close allies, noted there may be disagreements between the Trump administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus government, but there should be no fear of a rupture in bilateral ties."I dont think pro-Israel Americans need to be concerned that theres some rift between the United States and Israel. Are there sometimes differences of opinion on the next steps in the war in Gaza, getting the hostages home, or maybe to avoid an all-out war with Iran? Of course, thats natural," he said."But as far as the relationship between Israel and the U.S., that is not in any way at risk, nor is it in any way splintered or fractured. Its solid, it has to be. We dont have a choice. Its critically important that the United States maintains its partnershipand I use that word very deliberatelyits not a friendship, its not an alliance, its a partnership, which means we are yoked together in our intelligence sharing, military so many ways in which our nations are linked inseparably."On talks between Washington and Tehran, the ambassador described the Islamic Republic as "one of the if not the greatest, threats to world peace," warning that it poses a serious and immediate existential threat not only to Israel, but also to several Gulf nations and ultimately to the United States."The Iranians have said Israel is the Little Satan, but America is the Great Satan. Theyve always treated Israel as the appetizer and the United States as the entre," he said. "Its just important when people tell you over and over for 46 years they plan to kill you, you might want to start taking them seriously."Nevertheless, Huckabee expressed hope that ongoing nuclear negotiations between the two nations would be successful and avoid any kind of military conflict.IRAN WARNS ISRAEL AND US 'CAN'T DO A DAMN THING' TO THWART TEHRAN NUCLEAR AMBITIONS AS TENSIONS ESCALATE"But when diplomacy fails, the soldiers show up," he said."I find it hard to believe the Iranians, after all these years of pushing towards a nuclear device that is weaponized, would suddenly come to their senses and say we've changed. We don't want that anymore, but lets hope they do. But if they dont, the president has been incredibly clear that Iran is not going to have a nuclear weapon."On Israels ongoing war against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, heemphasized that the suffering could end immediatelyif Hamas chooses to act."All of us are hoping and praying that Hamas will finally give up all the hostages and release them, and then they will depart Gaza for good. If they do these two things, this is over," he said. "It could have been over on Oct. 8, 2023; it should have been. What they did was unthinkable, horrific, heinous, uncivilized, savage behavior."He noted that President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Hamas has no future in Gaza. "They cant rule it, they cant stay," said Huckabee."Israel has been clear that they are willing to put them on airplanes and fly them out in exile, they have a way out, but they dont have a way in. They have to go, and all hostages living and dead have to be returned," he added.Huckabee expressed hope that this would happen immediately.Speaking to Fox News Digital on Thursday, he said of the hostages, "This pin that I wear on my lapelone of the happiest days of my life will be when I can take this pin off and permanently put it away, never to wear it again, because that means all of the hostages have come home," he said.He also expressed confidence in the prospect of expanding the Abraham Accords, forged during Trumps first term, which normalized relations between Israel and four Arab states: the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. While not naming new countries considering joining, Huckabee said, "There are a number of nations that now realize that having enmity with Israel is meaningless," he said. "It is a delicate path for some countries; they cant go faster than their people are willing to go and accept but there is a great atmosphere and possibility that we will see some dramatic changes and big additions to the Abraham Accords."Tessa Hoyos contributed to this report.

NASCAR's Christian Eckes aims for breakthrough at Nashville during tough Xfinity season
Christian Eckes found his footing last year in the Craftsman Truck Series. He posted a third-place finish after winning three races and earning 22 top 10 finishes, but he made a major move. This year, the 24-year-old is in his first Xfinity Series season, and while he hasn't found similar success, he knew it was a necessary change.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"I felt like I had gotten to a point in the Truck Series where I wasn't content or happy with the success, but it definitely got to a point where I felt pretty comfortable about moving to the next level, and I felt like this was a great opportunity to go get in some different series with hopefully a ladder to Cup, as well," Eckes, who now races with Kaulig Racing, told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. To go along with his move to Xfinity, Eckes partnered with Celsius, the energy drink he says has given him huge boosts on race day."It's been a blast so far. I've been able to meet a lot of cool people and obviously drink some good drinks along the way. And Im looking forward to the future as well," Eckes said."It's helped me a lot. Some of these races are at night, or even in the morning, really. So getting that caffeine in definitely helps as well as the hydration packets. There's a lot of things that they do that help us succeed. So yeah, definitely a big part of our race weekends."Eckes admitted this season has not gone as he'd like. He has only six top 10 finishes this year."We're still trying to find our way," Eckes said. "Weve had some success here and there, have had some speed, but not on a consistent basis. So, that's kind of our No. 1 thing right now is to try to push that forward and get to where we feel like we should be, and that's contending on a weekly basis."This weekend, Eckes will be racing in Nashville, where he reached the pinnacle of success. He won there last year, and Kaulig has taken the checkered flag there before."Nashville should be a good place for us. I won the race last year in the Truck Series, so hopefully it's the weekend that we finally turned around," he said.Eckes admitted he was not a fan of Nashville in the past, but "leading every lap last year, I like it a little better now.""I've done it in a truck before, so hopefully I can repeat that success. Its gonna take a lot. The Xfinity Series is challenging to win. You gotta be perfect in every aspect or as close to perfect as you can be. Its gonna take a lot, but I feel confident in our team to do it."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X,and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Civil War spy Elizabeth Van Lew defined courage fighting for what she believed
In an age of instant accolades and viral valor, heroes are everywhere. Celebrities tearfully describing a difficult breakup on daytime TV are deemed heroic. You knew the word had lost all meaning when alleged murderer Luigi Mangione became a "hero" on social media for taking the life of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare. How is it that we have so lost the thread? Just who qualifies as a hero was on my mind as I began researching my book "Lincolns Lady Spymaster" several years ago. We were in the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, our lives upended. I eagerly ditched the commute and worked from home but as the months in isolation slid by, I began to worry. How long could this go on for? The situation was more dire for many of the young women producers I had worked with in our offices in Manhattan. They were lonely and anxious, living alone in tiny New York apartments or at home in their childhood bedrooms. One young woman I knew started having panic attacks. KEVIN COSTNER REVEALS 'TRAGIC' TRUTHS UNCOVERED IN NEW DOCU-SERIES 'THE WEST'I wanted to help these co-workers cope but what could I do? Look, I reasoned with myself, women in this country have faced far more difficult challenges than a temporary lockdown (it had to be temporary, after all!). American women have survived wars, myriad financial panics and so many challenges. I decided I would find a subject, a real woman from our nations past, someone who lived through challenging times and not only survived but left her mark on the world. I wanted what we all want in a hero someone acting courageously, not for headlines or money or even public gratitude, but because they felt called to right a wrong regardless of consequences.I first learned of Elizabeth Van Lew the same way we find out about most new things, from a web search. An academic historian had written about her, and she was sometimes included in lists of the moonlight-and-magnolia-style of female civil war spies, the kind historians dont take too seriously. I was hooked when I learned she was a spymaster, and strikingly, a Southern belle who chose to stay faithful to the Union and who ran a spy ring for President Abraham Lincolns top general, Ulysses S. Grant, while living in Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy.CIVIL WAR TAUGHT HOW TO INFLUENCE NEWS MEDIA. IT NEARLY COST LINCOLN RE-ELECTIONWhen I began, I thought of myself as knowledgeable about the era. I knew the bright lights, Lincoln, Grant, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. But this woman had left little trace. She was generally missing from much of the Civil War literature. James McPherson mentioned her not at all in his sweeping nearly 900-page history of the conflict, "Battle Cry of Freedom." I learned she had left a diary, where she spilled her fears and hopes during the war. I imagined myself writing a book about a woman whom society underestimates and throws obstacles in her path, a tale of uplift! But my research exposed a secret history a story Van Lew herself tried to cancel. Unlike other spies, she refused to write a book of her Civil War exploits after the war and conducted few newspaper interviews. I began to discover the real Elizabeth and she surprised me. I found she was complicated and made difficult, morally questionable decisions. She lied to friends and neighbors, brazenly stole secrets from some and bribed others. Although she was a supporter of both the Union and abolitionism, her family owned slaves. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONLate in the war, as she became frustrated at the pace of Union advances, she tried to convince Union war planners to abduct Confederate leadership. She was the kind of woman who could as easily inspect the body of a dead soldier at dawn under threat of discovery by the enemy as preside over a tea party, swapping gossip and passing canapes. And, yet she provided invaluable information to the Union and ran what historians have described as the most-effective spy ring on either side of the conflict. As I began writing the book, I recalled the fact that co-workers and friends had labeled me a hero when I went public with my diagnosis of Stage 3 breast cancer. While it felt nice to be called a hero, I never really accepted the idea. My fight with cancer was really an act of self-interest.ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S POSSESSIONS SELL FOR MILLIONS AS BLOODSTAINED GLOVES TOP AUCTIONWhat I saw in Elizabeth Van Lew was someone who acted with no self-regard, inviting risk after risk. Hers was not a Daniel Penny kind of courage, the kind of instant reaction to fight a physical threat on behalf of others that we all admire, but a more sustained battle of conscience and will. In this world, we need both kinds of heroes and could welcome more. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the Civil Wars end and Lincolns assassination. As we remember that tragic war, lets not forget the heroes that emerged, especially those that have remained in the shadows. Elizabeth Van Lew was one of tens of thousands of women who emerged to fight the war in their own way. Hundreds fought on the battlefield following husbands, brothers and fathers into service; women nursed the injured, others ran their family farms and businesses on their own for the first time.Van Lews story is a testament to the essence of true heroism: unwavering moral conviction, selfless action and the courage to stand against prevailing tides. In an era when the term "hero" is often diluted, her legacy reminds us that real heroes are those who, without fanfare, commit themselves to justice and humanity. Trump calls out Putin, accuses China of not honoring trade deal terms during 19th week in office
