WWW.FOXNEWS.COMFBI warns of hackers exploiting outdated routers. Check yours nowWe stay on top of updates for our phones and laptops. Some of us even make sure our smartwatches and security cameras are running the latest firmware. But routers often get overlooked. If it's working, we assume it's fine, but that mindset can be risky. Now, the FBI has issued a warning that cybercriminals are actively exploiting old, unpatched and outdated routers. The alert, released in May 2025, explains how aging network devices with known flaws are being hijacked by malware and used to power anonymous cybercrime operations. A forgotten device in your home can silently become a tool for attackers.Join the FREE "CyberGuy Report": Get my expert tech tips, critical security alerts and exclusive deals, plus instant access to myfree "Ultimate Scam Survival Guide" when you sign up!The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center publisheda public service announcement on May 7, 2025, cautioning both individuals and organizations that criminals are taking advantage of outdated routers that no longer receive security patches.Devices manufactured around 2010 or earlier are especially vulnerable, as vendors have long ceased providing firmware updates for them. According to the FBI, such end-of-life routers have been breached by cyber actors using a variant of the "TheMoon" malware, allowing attackers to install proxy services on the devices and conduct illicit activities anonymously. In essence, home and small-office routers are being quietly conscripted into proxy networks that mask the perpetrators' identities online. The alert notes that through networks like "5socks" and "Anyproxy," criminals have been selling access to the infected routers as proxy nodes. In these schemes, paying customers can route their internet traffic through unwitting victims' routers, obscuring their own location while the victim's device (and IP address) bears the blame.FBI WARNS ABOUT NEW EXTORTION SCAM TARGETING SENSITIVE DATAThe FBI bulletin even names specific router models as frequent targets, including:All of these devices are roughly a decade or more old and have known security vulnerabilities that were never patched once support ended. With their firmware updates long discontinued, any still in use are soft targets for attackers.WHAT EXACTLY IS A DATA BREACH? WHY SHOULD I CARE?Many recent infections stem from devices with remote administration exposed to the internet. Attackers scan for such routers, exploiting known firmware flaws without needing passwords. A single crafted web request can trick an older device into running malicious code. Once inside, malware often alters settings, opening ports or disabling security features, to maintain control and connect to external command-and-control servers. One prominent threat isTheMoon, a malware strain first seen in 2014 that exploited flaws in Linksys routers. It has since evolved into a stealthy botnet builder, transforming infected routers into proxy nodes. Instead of launching direct attacks, TheMoon reroutes third-party traffic, masking hackers' identities behind everyday home networks. Cybercrime platforms like Faceless and 5socks sell access to these infected routers as "residential proxies," making them valuable assets in the digital underground. For users, a compromised router means slower connections, exposure to phishing and spyware, and potential legal trouble if criminals abuse their IP address. For businesses, the risk is even higher: Outdated routers can be exploited for deeper network intrusions, data theft and ransomware attacks. In critical sectors, the consequences can be severe, affecting safety and compliance.HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PERSONAL INFO FROM PEOPLE-SEARCH SITES200 MILLION SOCIAL MEDIA RECORDS LEAKED IN MAJOR X DATA BREACHGiven the serious threats posed by outdated and compromised routers, taking proactive measures is essential. Here are six practical steps you can follow to protect your network and keep hackers at bay.1) Replace your old router if it's no longer supported:If your router is more than five to seven years old, or if you can't find any recent updates for it on the manufacturer's website, it might be time to upgrade. Older routers often stop getting security fixes, which makes them an easy target for hackers. To check, look at the label on your router for the model number, then search online for "[model number] firmware update." If the last update was years ago, consider replacing it with a newer model from a trusted brand. If you're not sure which router to get, check out my list oftop routers for the best security. It includes models with strong security features and compatibility withVPN services.2) Keep your router's firmware updated:Your router runs software called firmware, which needs to be updated just like your phone or computer. To do this, open a web browser and type your router's IP address (often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), then log in using the username and password (usually found on a sticker on the router). Once inside, look for a section called "Firmware Update," "System" or "Administration," and check if an update is available. Apply it if there is one. Some newer routers also have apps that make this even easier.3) Turn off remote access:Remote access lets you control your router from outside your home network, but it also opens the door for hackers. You can turn this off by logging into your router's settings (using the same steps as above), then finding a setting called "Remote Management," "Remote Access" or "WAN Access." Make sure this feature isdisabled, then save the changes and restart your router.4) Use a strong password for your router settings:Don't leave your router using the default login, like "admin" and "password." That's the first thing hackers try. Change it to a long, strong password with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. A good example would be something likeT#8r2k!sG91xm4vL. Try to avoid using the same password you use elsewhere. You can usually change the login password in the "Administration" or "Security" section of the router settings. Consider using apassword manager to generate and store complex passwords. Get more details about mybest expert-reviewed password managers of 2025 here.5) Look out for strange behavior and act quickly:If your internet feels unusually slow, your devices randomly disconnect or your streaming buffers more than usual, it could mean something is wrong. Go into your router settings and check the list of connected devices. If you see something you don't recognize, it could be a sign of a breach. In that case, update the firmware, change your passwords and restart the router. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, call your internet provider for help.6) Reporting to authorities:The FBI asks that victims or those who suspect a compromise report incidents to theInternet Crime Complaint Center, which can help authorities track and mitigate broader threats.SUBSCRIBE TO KURTS YOUTUBE CHANNEL FOR QUICK VIDEO TIPS ON HOW TO WORK ALL OF YOUR TECH DEVICESThis isn't just about asking everyone to upgrade their old gear. It's about the bigger issue of who's actually responsible when outdated devices turn into security risks. Most people don't think twice about the router sitting in a corner, quietly doing its job years past its prime. But attackers do. They see forgotten hardware as easy targets. The real challenge isn't just technical. It's about how manufacturers, service providers and users all handle the long tail of aging tech that still lives on in the real world.Should manufacturers be held accountable for keeping routers secure against cyber threats? WWW.FOXNEWS.COMHawaii's Kilauea Volcano erupts with 1,000-foot 'lava fountaining'Klauea Volcano located along the southeastern shore of Hawaii Island experienced "lava fountaining" that reached at least 1,000 feet high over the weekend. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) describes Klauea as one of the world's most active volcanoes. It has been erupting intermittently since Dec. 23, 2024, within the summit caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The 23rd episode of precursory activity began late last week with "low-level spattering and flames." According to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, small lava fountains and lava overflows from the north vent started around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.HAWAIIAN AIRLINES FLIGHT DIVERTED ON SAN DIEGO TARMAC OVER POSSIBLE BOMB THREAT; PERSON ARRESTED"Sustained fountaining expected any time through the weekend," Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Service wrote. The USGS reports that Klauea "is in a unique phase of activity in Halemaumau, with numerous episodes of dual lava fountains since the eruption began."UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT RETURNS TO HAWAII AFTER CONCERNING MESSAGE FOUND ON BATHROOM MIRROR; FBI INVESTIGATING"Two eruptive vents are located in the southwest part of the caldera, referred to as the north and south vent, and they have been intermittently active, producing new lava flows over parts of Halemaumau crater surface," according to the USGS.As of 5:20 p.m. local time on Sunday, the south vent had lava fountains 230 feet high, while the north vent had lava fountains 1,000 feet high, according to Hawaii News Now.USGS livestreams of the eruption site showed the lava fountains dropping in height and later stopping. The vents were still glowing and lava was still visibile on the crater floor. The volcano's last "fountaining phase" extended for about 10 hours on May 16, according to the USGS.Klauea experienced other recent fountaining phases this month on May 11, May 6 and May 2, lasting eight hours, 4.5 hours and eight hours, respectively.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPDuring the ongoing eruption, the USGS reported that pressure building beneath the surface caused an inflationary tilt prior to a lava fountaining episode. As pressure within the magma is released when lava fountaining begins, a switch to a deflationary tilt occurs. That pattern of inflation and deflation with every recent lava fountain episode "creates a saw-tooth pattern in ground tilt records over the past several months," according to the USGS, though the government agency reports that the summit has shown little net change in pressurization since the eruption began on Dec. 23, 2024.0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 74 مشاهدة 0 معاينة

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMMilitary veterans of US' 'toxic soup' Uzbekistan base fighting for proper care 20 years after its shutterAt the former Soviet base-turned-CIA black site and U.S. military base in Uzbekistan, researchers knew early on danger lingered not just from the enemy but from the ground itself.Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, known asK2, was a launchpad for U.S. operations into Afghanistan after 9/11. But for thousands of American troops who served there, it may have been a death sentence.Matthew "Nick" Nicholls, an Army environmental technician and preventive medicine specialist, was part of an early team that assessed the environmental hazards at K2."It is probably the most toxic soup of chemicals that any service member has ever been exposed to," Nicholls told Fox News Digital.Yellowcake uranium oozed from the ground. Jet fuel and volatile chemicals from decaying Soviet rocket bunkers polluted the soil and air. Dangerous fumes hung over the base like the fog of forgotten war.Nicholls and his team warned commanders, providing recommendations like laying down gravel to suppress toxic dust and restrictions on how long personnel could work in high-risk zones. Some precautions were taken, others werent."People that I am friends with are actively dying from cancer right now," Nicholls said. "These are weird ontologies that are striking down people who are very young, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, in the prime of their life."K2 veterans have reported a disturbing trend ofrare and aggressive cancers, reproductive organ diseases, osteoarthritis and sudden, unexplained deaths.VICTIM SPEAKS OUT AFTER NAVY DENIES FUEL-CONTAMINATED WATER CAUSED INJURIES: 'AFFECTED IN NEARLY EVERY WAY'"These are not the cancers that young people normally get," Nicholls said. "Their stories are not really able to be told. Thats the tragedy of it.""These people went there right after 9/11 to avenge the deaths of those who were murdered," Nicholls said. "Yet we had this launching pad in Uzbekistan that was left in such derelict condition by the Soviets."Between 2001 and 2005, more than15,000 U.S. service members passed through K2. Thousands more served as contractors. Many now find themselvesstruggling to get adequate medical care or recognition from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).The VA recognizes such veterans "may have encountered several hazardous exposures," and the Department of Defense conducted an initial study to look at cancer outcomes. But that study was based only on a few cases of each type of cancer and should not be viewed as "definitive evidence of an association with service at K-2," the VA says. But a spokesperson for Rep. Mark Green said he does not believe these studies were enough, that they did not take the full extent of contamination into account and did not appropriately inform occupants of the base of their exposure risk or account for the full range of diseases that can result from toxic exposures."That is why Rep. Green's NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) amendment calls for a new, fully rigorous epidemiological study to cover these blind spots," the spokesperson said. "There are too many unknowns to call it a case closed."Fox News Digital has reached out to the VA for comment.Green, R-Tenn., and Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., introduced a provision in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act requiring the Pentagon tocomplete a study on K2 exposure within 180 days. Four years later, that study remains unfinished."This is unjust," Green told Fox News Digital. "There were repeated warnings that service members were being exposed to toxins, and yet their health and safety were ignored by Pentagon leadership of that day."In a letter first obtained by Fox News Digital that went out late Friday, Green is pressing the Pentagon tocomplete the long-overdue study, a step he argues is essential to ensure K2 veterans receive the care they deserve."Because this study has yet to be completed (as far as Congress is aware), many K2 veterans are still waiting to receive much needed care," he wrote. "This is unjust. There were repeated warnings at Camp Stronghold Freedom that servicemembers (sic) were being exposed to toxins, and yet their health and safety were ignored by the Pentagon leadership of that day."The Pentagon told Fox News Digital it would respond to Green privately.'LIKE A CAR CRASH': NAVY FIGHTER PILOT DESCRIBES BRAIN INJURY PHENOMENON NOW AT CENTER OF CONGRESSIONAL PROBEIn 2024, the VA moved to expand access to disability for K2 veterans and lower the burden of proof for the veterans to link their illnesses to their service. But advocates say it wasn't enough."The VA is dragging its feet," Green said. "I think it really purely comes down to cost. I get that the VA wants to be judicious, but my God, the numbers here are so convincing. This is long past due."Green has also introduced new legislation requiring the VA to formally recognize links between K2 toxic exposure and diseases like cancer, ensuring affected veterans qualify for care and benefits.Toxins at K2 included petrochemicals, volatile organic compounds, depleted uranium, burn pits and tetrachlorethylene, all chemicals associated with long-term health risks. But K2 veterans are not specifically named in the PACT Act, which expanded coverage for other toxic exposures like Agent Orange and burn pits.Green, a physician and Army veteran, sees disturbing echoes of past delays."Bureaucrats come and go, and bureaucrats have their own agendas," he said. "I want to make sure that it's written in stone and that these guys are not forgotten."0 التعليقات 0 المشاركات 75 مشاهدة 0 معاينة
