Hawaii judge denies bail to doctor accused of trying to kill wife while hiking on popular trail
A judge in Hawaii has denied bail to a doctor who allegedly tried to kill his wife while the two were hiking on a Honolulu trail in March. The anesthesiologist, 46-year-old Dr. Gerhardt Konig, was charged with attempted second-degree murder after he allegedly tried to kill his wife on March 24 while they were hiking on Oahu's Pali Lookout trail. His bail was previously set at $5 million.Konig has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.Konig's attorneys argued in a motion that bail should be set at a "reasonable amount" since the defendant has no prior criminal history. Prosecutors opposed the bail request, saying that Konig "faces a realistic prospect of life imprisonment," noting he tried to flee the area after the alleged attack.Prosecutors also wrote in the court filing that Konig allegedly called his adult son after the attack, telling him he "tried to kill your stepmom."ANESTHESIOLOGIST ACCUSED OF WIFE'S CLIFFSIDE MURDER ATTEMPT ENTERS PLEA: 'TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY'Judge Paul Wong denied the motion for bail, saying that Konig attempted to hide evidence from police and is a serious flight risk. Wong also said that Konig is a danger to his wife.Court documents previously obtained by Fox News Digital state that Konig's wife told police that her husband stood "close to the edge and asked her to take a selfie with him." Konig's wife declined, telling police she did not feel comfortable "taking a picture with him that close to the edge" and "began to walk back."FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON XWhen Konig's wife began walking back, Konig began yelling and allegedly pushed her into nearby bushes. After she got away from Konig, he allegedly "picked up a rock and struck her in the head approximately 10 times while also grabbing the back of her hair and smashing her face into the ground," according to an affidavit.Konig's wife began screaming for help and tried crawling over to two other hikers. Konig then took out two syringes from his back and tried to "use them on her," the affidavit stated.A hiker who was identified as "Amanda" in court documents told police that she found Konig on top of his wife, hitting her in the head with a rock."He is trying to kill me," Konig's wife said, according to prosecutors.HAWAII DOCTOR CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER AFTER TRYING TO KILL WIFE ON POPULAR HIKING TRAIL, POLICE SAYAn individual named in court documents as "Sarah" dialed 911 and assisted Amanda in helping Konig's wife to a separate area while Konig fled the scene.Following a "brief foot pursuit," police arrested Konig near Pali Highway. Following his arrest, according to prosecutors, Konig said "Wait, shes not dead?"In a court filing on Monday, prosecutors accused Konig of storing needles, syringes and vials labeled anesthesia medication. Prosecutors said Konig's wife found her husband's fanny pack that contained vials and syringes, adding Maui police sent the items to the Honolulu Police Department.SIGN UP TO GET THE TRUE CRIME NEWSLETTERDuring Tuesday's hearing, Konig's attorney, Thomas Otake, said it is not unusual for doctors to have such drugs at home."Thats not unusual that a doctor who practices medicine would have drugs," Otake said.Otake asked for bail between $100,000 and $200,000 before the judge denied his request.A Maui Health representative previously told Fox News Digital that Konig was suspended from his job as an independent contractor at Maui Memorial Medical Center."Dr. Konig is employed by an independent entity contracted to provide medical services at various medical facilities on Maui, including Maui Memorial Medical Center," the spokesperson said. "Dr. Konigs medical staff privileges at Maui Memorial Medical Center have been suspended pending investigation. Maui Health takes these concerns and the safety of its patients very seriously and will cooperate with authorities as appropriate."GET REAL-TIME UPDATES DIRECTLY ON THE TRUE CRIME HUBThe Associated Press and Fox News Digital's Julia Bonavita contributed to this report.

Federal judge seizes control of Rikers Island from NYC
A federal judge in New York has taken the extraordinary step of seizing control of the citys troubled Rikers Island jail complex, one of the nations largest and most famous jails, which houses around 7,000 inmates.Judge Laura Taylor Swain, in a 77-page ruling, ordered the notorious jail and the citys entire jail system -- be run by an independent officer reporting solely to the court, having found that conditions at the jail remained unconstitutionally dangerous, with persistent failures by NYC Department of Correction (DOC) leadership to implement court-mandated reforms."The unsafe and dangerous conditions in the jails have become normalized despite the fact that they are clearly abnormal and unacceptable," Swain wrote.NYC SHOULD BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OVER APPALLING RIKERS CONDITIONS, COURT-APPOINTED MONITOR SAYSThe order stems from a 2011 case, Nunez v. City of New York, when a group of incarcerated individuals filed a federal lawsuit alleging a pattern of excessive and unnecessary force by staff in New York City jails. In 2015, the city agreed to a settlement known as the Nunez Consent Judgment, which laid out hundreds of required reforms to reduce violence and improve oversight."Nine years have passed since the parties first agreed that the perilous conditions in the Rikers Island jails were unconstitutional; that the level of unconstitutional danger has not improved... is both alarming and unacceptable," Swain also wrote in the order. In November, she held the DOC and city in civil contempt for violating 18 provisions of court orders meant to reduce violence, abuse, and dysfunction in the jail system.Swain ordered the jail system be overseen by an independent official a Nunez Remediation Manager reporting solely to the court, with powers similar to a receiver but focused specifically on the citys contempt violations. The official will report directly to the court and will have full authority to change DOC policies related to the use of force, staffing, discipline, and security.NYC RIKERS ISLAND INMATE STARTS FIRE IN CELL, INJURING 20 ON SAME DAY DEM LAWMAKERS VISITNew York City Mayor Eric Adams had vigorously opposed a federal takeover but said on Tuesday that he would comply with the federal judges decision."If the federal judge made a determination that they want to do something else and they don't like what we're doing, it's a federal judgement," Adams said at a press briefing Tuesday on a different issue. "We're going to follow the rules."In 2017, former Mayor Bill de Blasio initiated a plan to close the prisonwithin 10 years aimed at reducing the city's jail population and replacing Rikers with four modern, borough-based jails located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. De Blasio said the goal was to address systemic injustice, improve jail conditions and support decarceration and bail reform. But the plan appears unlikely to come to fruition anytime soon due to significant delays, with the firstof the replacement jails not scheduled to finish before 2029, according to the New York Post. The de Blasio plan was approved by the City Council and prohibited capital investments in the facility, which Adams said tied his hands in relation to improving conditions, although he said that the problems there are decades old and that conditions improved under his leadership with fewer stabbings, assaults and absenteeism."I'm hoping [the judge] looked at the funding plan we had... we should be able to spend capital dollars to improve the facility."Swain acknowledged that these limitations were part of the context but did not accept them as valid excuses. She said the Nunez Remediation Manager could raise issues of capital spending with her.The court's decision was praised by Mary Lynne Werlwas of The Legal Aid Society, and Debra Greenberger, partner at the law firm Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel."For years, the New York City Department of Correction has failed to follow federal court orders to enact meaningful reforms, allowing violence, disorder, and systemic dysfunction to persist in the jails," they said."This appointment marks a critical turning pointan overdue acknowledgment that City leadership has proven unable to protect the safety and constitutional rights of incarcerated individuals."

Take it from this Muslim: Peace depends on total defeat of the Islamist death cult
As President Donald Trump crisscrosses the Arab world this week, there is talk of peace in the Middle East, shockingly with the Hamas terrorist group still in the picture. However, as a former U.S. Navy lieutenant commander and the co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement, challenging Islamist extremism, I know there is only one path to victory in the Middle East: The complete and unconditional surrender by Hamas and the Palestinian people.TRUMP HITS IRAN'S POCKETBOOK AS HE DANGLES A CARROT IN MIDDLE EAST SPEECHThe strong-man approach that Trump has taken with China on trade is very similar to the ground game he must realize in the Middle East for the defeat of Hamas. In 2016, he dared to imagine a new reality to the endless wars between Israel and Arab nations and their proxies. Few thought there could be a lasting, genuine peace agreement between Israel and its enemy neighbors, but Trump put a lie to that expectation with the establishment of theAbraham Accords in 2019, building peace between Israel and four historical enemies, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Sudan and Bahrain. On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas launched the most brutal and savage war of rape, killing and enslavement of Jews since the Holocaust.Hamas proclaimed, celebrated and videotaped their brutality. Hamas genocidal hate for Jews and Israel runs deep. Hamas practices a theo-political interpretation of my faith known as "Islamism," or political Islam, believing in a theocratic state. It is a cult that hates individual liberties and free enterprise, spawned fromthe Muslim Brotherhood, born in Egypt in the 1920s and similar to the ideology of Ayatollah Khomeini, who led the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Islamism has deeply infected the practice of Muslims around the world.Meanwhile, Arab nations and Palestinian terrorist groups have waged war against Israel repeatedly and lost in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, on and on and now 2023 through 2025 through the Islamists that are Hamas. Why does this cycle of war keep happening? One simple reason: the international community has never compelled the Palestinians to acknowledge defeat. Today, Hamas has become a death cult, repackaged as a victim-cult where its leaders funnel money poured into them to create infernal tunnels of weaponry, terrorists and hate.Muslims around the world and guilt-filled westerners have failed to understand that the key element to redemption is surrender. Allied forces had to force Germany and Japan into unconditional surrender before the two nations made the painful step toward modernity after World War II.But, despite defeat after defeat, Palestinians have never had to surrender their death cults and successfully enter the modern world. To this, some of my Muslim brethren may say, "Surrender to the Jews? Never!"But they would not be surrenderingto the Jews. They would be surrendering the inhumanity and abject failure of Islamist ideology and their fantasy that they will destroy Israel. The Palestinian establishment has brainwashed its citizenry. Nazi Germany did the same thing. When Nazi German forces were forced to accept defeat and surrender, Germans found freedom on the other side. That is the type of moral fearlessness needed today. The Hamas Charter is a theo-political screed of Jew-hatred that must be torn up. It's the PalestinianMein Kampf. Like the billionaire leaders of Hamas, it perverts and destroys any hope for generations to come.I believe in my faith of Islam, not the Islamist ideology. Over a millennium ago, Islam had produced the Elon Musks of its age. Islamic nations were the leaders in math, science, philosophy and civilization. In fact, the only nation-state even mentioned by God in the Quran is Israel! Its mention is an endorsement that even Islamists can't ignore. So, the historic new alliance between Arab countries must not just be about gleaming skyscrapers. It must be about transformation, or it could end up like the ideologically doomed country of Qatar.Qatar is an externally modern city-state on the gulf, in the desert. Yet, its state-sponsored media, the horrifically popular Al-Jazeera TV, radicalizes all. It's one vast communicator of hate against the West, Israel and the Jews.Al Jazeera English and Arabic is the primary cancer cell spreading the Islamist supremacist worldview of Muslim Brotherhood terror groups. Its not a coincidence the Qataris have the leaders of the Taliban, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Al Qaeda, ISIS and Hamas on speed dial when it comes time for "negotiations."Qatars trillions fund a blanket of Islamist hate across the world. The internet has changed lifeand it has changed Islam, revealing a medieval climate of grievance and tribalism. The Arab Awakening of 2011 reminded the Arab people that they are stronger than their rulers, and they can expose the bullies of the "Islamist establishment."CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONApoll of Muslims in the United Kingdom revealed that 81% of respondents said they were "Muslim first" and "British second."Another global poll showed that the majority of Arab Muslims support the death penalty for "apostates" of Islam, with up to80% in Egypt and Jordan and a plurality across the world. That is todays normative interpretation of Islamic law, or shariah. It is the ideology of a death cult. This all must change.I recently argued atOxford Union debate that the brand of Islam of today is not compatible with democracy, liberty, or freedom. But the Islam of the 21st century could be, if we end the "bigotry of low expectations" and stop handing Muslims participation trophies for just showing up to negotiations, interfaith dinners and business deals. Muslims have excelled before in a pluralistic society, and we can excel again. But, as we argue through theMuslim Reform Movement and the Clarity Coalition, another group I cofounded to challenge Islamists, we must give up our hate and embrace modernity. That means recognizing the state of Israel. And unconditionally surrendering with an end to all hostilities and war against Israel. The delusion of a Palestine that replaces the state of Israel must die.History has shown that unconditional surrender would allow the silent majority to find renewal in a post-Hamas, post-Islamist, post-tribal Gaza. Endless wars only end when the defeated are not left at the brink of defeat to rearm again. That is tough love.Recentanti-Hamas protestsin Gaza may signal an opening in Hamas hold on Palestinians. Securing their surrender may finally turn their consciousness away from endless wars toward enlightenment and bring Islam into the 21st century.

Angel Reese avoids question on last year's bold statement about her role in growing WNBA
Chicago Sky star Angel Reese was uninterested in answering a question about a bold statement she made when it came to growing the WNBA.Reese made it clear last June that she believed it was not just "one person" who changed the game of womens basketball and that historians will look back on the moment in 2024 and prove her right.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"Its because of me too," Reese said.On Tuesday, Reese was about to be asked whether she still felt like that when she interjected."Next question," she said, via FOX 32 Chicago.A Sky official off to the side also chimed in to move on from the question. The question of who made a bigger impact on the popularity of the WNBA will keep lingering. For what it is worth, the Indiana Fever have dozens of games on national TV this season more than the defending champion New York Liberty.Reese is entering her second season in the WNBA with all eyes on how she will fare in 2025 with a new head coach and a couple of new teammates around her.ANGEL REESE'S MOM TAKES APPARENT SHOT AT CAITLIN CLARK'S FAN BASE: 'WE AIN'T THE SAME'The former LSU stars rookie campaign came to an abrupt end when she suffered an injury that kept her off the floor and prevented Chicago from a final push to the playoffs. She was an All-Star last season and averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game. She earned MVP votes and finished second behind Caitlin Clark for WNBA Rookie of the Year.In the offseason, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie offered advice about her game in February and expanded on it in an interview with Sports Illustrated."Angel has the motor, she has the energy that you need to be an amazing player," Leslie said. "She has a nose for a ball that's really uncanny and really tough to stop. She's a physical player who plays, she enjoys the contact so you really can't rattle her. And I think we have all of those pieces that makes for a really great player."I think Angel's ability to score is gonna continue to get better, scoring on the inside and finishing on the left side and right side. She's a lefty who shoots very well on the right side. She has an excellent work ethic, and she's gonna continue to get better."Chicago will open the season against Clark and the Indiana Fever.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Mood flips at Columbia U after quashing of latest protest, Trump pressure takes hold
The attempted takeover of a library at Columbia University by anti-Israel protesters last week was shut down fast and decisively by law enforcement, and the feeling among students on campus is that any further disruption or any repeat of last years chaotic campus encampments will not be tolerated among the universitys new leadership and will be quickly squashed. There was a somber and uneasy mood outside the university the day after the protest, with the vast majority of students tight-lipped on the matter as they hurriedly shuffled through a security checkpoint outside the main gate on their way to class. There were no political signs, no Palestinian flags, and only a handful of people over the course of several hours were spotted wearing keffiyehs, the traditional Middle Eastern scarf often worn by protesters to signify their support of Palestinians. Those who did speak said things had changed.DOZENS OF ANTI-ISRAEL AGITATORS ARRESTED AFTER STORMING, TAKING OVER COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY LIBRARY DURING FINALS"It was very scary. I think the energy after last night, the dynamic has shifted,"a dejected Harmony Cruz Bustamante told Fox News Digital outside the university on Thursday afternoon."There's just a collective understanding now on campus that we don't talk about certain things because of fears of getting detained or questioned by the authorities. So it was very scary last night because the university really revealed themselves in that they really don't have our interests at heart. And I think that was seen through the viciousness that a lot of the public safety officers and NYPD had."Cruz Bustamante and others sympathetic to the protesters' cause pointed fingers at the alleged heavy-handed tactics used by the NYPD and university police.Having had $400 million in federal funding pulled by the Trump administration, the university warned students weeks ago that any illegal protests would be swiftly shut down, and agitators would be arrested. That is exactly what happened on Wednesday afternoon when anti-Israel protesters burst into the Butler Library and climbed on tables as students prepared for finals. The NYPD made 80 arrests 19 males and 61 females, according to a source. A source also said at least 50 of the 80protesters arrestedwere Columbia University students.Trying to get students to speak about the protests proved challenging.COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY YIELDS TO TRUMP ADMIN DEMANDS OVER REVOKED $400M IN FEDERAL FUNDINGMany international students, who make up around 38% of the population, breezed by and said they did not want to risk speaking in case their visas would be yanked, like Mahmoud Khalil, one of the ringleaders ofanti-Israel protestsat Columbia last year who the Trump administration arrested in March and is trying to deport.Among those non-international students who did speak, the reaction was mixed."I think it was quite commendable and honorable of them,"saidpolitical science major Elias Taouli, who agrees with the protesters cause but does not condone violence. "It was quite chaotic, some kids were getting shoved on the ground and everything," he said. "Of course, there's always a better way to do things, but the truth is that we're trying to get a reaction out of Columbia, and it's very easy to criticize 19-year-old kids on how they protest, but then you won't criticize how Columbia has been bending over backwards for Trump and then deporting its students.""Columbia is going against every value that they preach. I mean they teach us these beautiful values and the reason why I came here -- freedom and equality and justice but they're bending over backwards to basically appease a dictator. While Harvard is fighting back. They're not even trying to fight back."He said that the demonstrators' message itself is antisemitic and that there is always a small fraction of people who will take it too far, adding that those protesting are not against the Jewish people. However, a blunt Rose Meyer was adamant that agitators should pay the price for their illegal conduct."My thoughts are that if you're going to break school policy, you will pay the consequences. It's that simple," Meyer said. "What's happening in Gaza is not great. I don't have a solution. I don't think it's very easy to solve, but the way you're going about it, not so bueno."The university's encampment protests ignited a wave of campus protests throughout the country last year. The chaos at Columbia culminated in students taking control ofHamilton Hall and violently clashingwith policein riot gear. The ugly scenes saw more than 200 people arrested as students protested Israels war in Gaza in response to the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas that left more than 1,200 people dead.Critics of the protesters said they were fueled by hatred of Israel, while defenders said they were trying to force political change and stop Israels attacks on Gaza aimed at crushing Hamas and rescuing the hostages.Another student, PJ, said he hopes Wednesday's disturbance can be used as an inflection point and said he hopes it is used as a time to come together to find some common ground. He feels the disruptions should be dealt with internally by the university."I think that it's a lot of sadness, a lot of frustration, a lot of confusion, as well," he said. "I think this is a scary time, I also think it's a very hopeful time."He said students are trying to balance the best way to stand up for their beliefs and values with academic tasks at hand.International students who did speak to Fox News Digital did not want to be on video in fear of any repercussions. As of the fall, about 13,750 (38%) of Columbias student population are international students with more than 6,450 hailing from China, according to the university. That is followed by 1,240 Indians and nearly 580 Canadians. These students hail from over 145 countries. One Italian student said the tactics protesters used were wrong. "Ive learned that its smart not to comment.""Im staying out of it, Im an international student," a smiling female international student from Ethiopia said as she whizzed by.Daniel David, a freshman from Israel who is studying computer science, said the protesters are misguided since they do not live in the Middle East and do not have first-hand experience of the situation in the Middle East."There are no consequences for actions. How do they know whats going on over there?" David asked.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPHe said he thought twice about coming to study at Columbia given last years encampments but said if he did not, then it would have been a win for the demonstrators.Antonio Da Porto, an Italian student who is studying math, added that he does not want a repeat of last year's disruptions when student classes, studies and graduations were interrupted. He said the protesters should demonstrate in public spaces."These people act in a way that they want to really put the students in a difficult situation. I think theres a silent majority of people that are not happy about anything that's happening right now and that's been happening in the last year," Da Porto said."You can say what you think, but you're an international student, so you're here to build your career, and you should not bring any problems to the nation. Theres not really a systematic antisemitism problem. It's like a small group of students that do a lot of noise. But outside this small group of students, Jewish students can feel relatively safe on the campus."

Former NY Gov Cuomo holds double-digit lead in NYC mayoral race Democratic primary
Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appears to be on his way to becoming the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.Cuomo currently holds a double-digit lead over second-place candidate Zohran Mamdani in a Marist College survey obtained by Politico. In the first round of ranked-choice voting, the former governor has 44% versus Mamdanis 22%, a lead that appears to hold throughout all six rounds. The survey shows Cuomos lead over Mamdani ranging from 20-24% overall.ANDREW CUOMO DENIED ALMOST $3 MILLION IN PUBLICLY MATCHING FUNDS FOR MAYORAL BID, CITES 'SOFTWARE ERROR'Marist College found just two other Democrats in the crowded primary who were able to garner double-digit percentages: City Council speaker Adrienne Adams and City Comptroller Brad Lander. In the survey, Adams was knocked out of the race in round four and Lander in the fifth. The rest of the candidates were in the single digits with just two of them making it out of the first round, and by round three, all five were out.Despite his popularity in the Marist College poll, Cuomos campaign has faced several setbacks. The former governor has missed out on matching funds twice. In April, the New York City Campaign Finance Board (NYCCFB) indicated that at least 20% of Cuomo's required disclosures contained documentation errors related to contributions. The NYCCFB also said that the Cuomo campaign failed to meet its required two-part threshold of total contributions, which must be at least 1,000 different individuals, and contributors, which must amount to at least $250,000, needed to obtain the publicly matched funds. The Cuomo campaign blamed a "technical software error" for the denial.CUOMO LANDS KEY ENDORSEMENT AS COMEBACK BID FOR NYC MAYOR HEATS UPOn Monday, the Cuomo campaign was docked over $622,000 in matching funds for allegedly coordinating with a super PAC, according to New York 1, marking another financial setback for the former governors campaign.Cuomos opponents have also criticized him over his past controversies, including his 2021 resignation and handling of COVID-19. Current New York City Mayor Eric Adams has demanded that Cuomo "answer" questions about allegations surrounding COVID-related nursing home deaths. Mayor Adams said that the allegations should not "be an automatic disqualification," but that those who lost loved ones want to know "exactly what happened."Mayor Adams is running for re-election; however, he is doing so as an independent, not a Democrat. The Big Apple mayor won in the eighth round of voting in the 2021 election cycle."Im in the race to the end. Im not running on the Democratic line. Its just not realistic to turn around my numbers and to run a good campaign (from) where we are right now," Adams told Politico in April.
