WWE star Zelina Vega recalls wrestling in NJ, making history as US champ and touts SummerSlam
WWE SummerSlam will be a two-night event for the first time in its history when the premium live event takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, later this summer. For Zelina Vega, it will be a homecoming of sorts.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe current womens United States champion grew up two rivers to the east in Queens, New York, but got her legs underneath her as a wrestler in the Garden State, specifically in Union City."I was training at the Ace Arena in Jersey for a while," Vega shared with Fox News Digital in a recent interview. "Me and A.J. Lee actually trained together in Jersey and it also kind of helped me prepared for the role, if Im going to be honest, in Fighting with My Family to play her. It was just getting to know her then and applying that now and seeing it where it all kind of went down."But yeah, I spent a lot of time in New Jersey training and just that whole New York/New Jersey feel, it was just where I was constantly when I was coming."Vega won the Womens United States Championship in a match against Chelsea Green after WrestleMania 41. The title was added to the menu as another opportunity for the loaded womens roster on "SmackDown." The "Raw" roster has the Womens Intercontinental Championship.Vega told Fox News Digital previously that she hoped WWE was going to add a midcard title to the fold, and now she holds the belt the first singles championship of her career in the company.JEFF COBB MAKES WWE DEBUT AT BACKLASH, HELPS JACOB FATU RETAIN US TITLE"It feels amazing When I was growing up, I just wanted to be a part of it," she said. "And of course, I wanted to be champion. I made this huge thing in my mind when I was a kid, I was like, Im gonna be champion, this is gonna happen for me. I didnt see a Plan B in my mind."Now, its like, not only did you make it, not only youre champion, youre also a part of history. First-ever Queen of the Ring, like I never thought that was gonna happen. So, its still shocking me but also that eight-year-old Thea that was like trying to get all of this sorted out in my mind. I didnt see a Plan B, I was so stubborn. I was like, No, this is happening. So, proving her right, it feels like the most amazing feeling."Vega, as confident as ever that she will be walking into SummerSlam as the champion, also had advice for the young girls who are looking up at her."Its just, never give up on you because you will have so many nos, you will have so many people giving you reasons as to why you shouldnt be champion, why you shouldnt make it where you want to be," she explained to Fox News Digital. "But as long as you dont give up on you, no ones going to stop you."You dont take no for an answer and you dont give up on yourself. If I can do this and I can stand here as champion, it should be proven in so many peoples minds that your own determination is whats going to get you where you need to be."Fans interested in attending SummerSlam can get their tickets on Ticketmaster. The event will take place on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3."Its our first-ever two-night SummerSlam, which is crazy because usually thats only WrestleMania," she said. "Theres a lot of buzz about it. The whole week is really gonna be amazing because its in just where I grew up. So, its kinda cool to feel like its a coming home feeling, whether its Raw, SmackDown, and then the two-day SummerSlam. Its gonna be really fun."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward reveals lessons learned from crushing Indy 500 runner-up finish in 2024
One year ago at this time, Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward had a dream. When he closed his eyes at night, O'Ward told Fox News Digital he would dream of crossing the finish line at the Indy 500 before the rest of his competition."I keep racing multiple Indy 500's in my head. Its crazy," he said last May. "You try and tone it down as much as you can, but this raceits unlike anything else."CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe dream looked like it was about to come true when "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" saw O'Ward leading with one lap to go until Josef Newgarden came flying from behind and past the McLaren black and orange car to come away with the win.Instead of celebrating victory at "The Brickyard," O'Ward was slumped over his vehicle as his team tried to console him. For the second time in three years, O'Ward was runner-up.ARROW MCLAREN'S PATO O'WARD CONFIDENT AS HE DREAMS OF FIRST INDY 500 VICTORY: WEVE GOT A SHOT'"I mean, at that moment, it was a moment that a lot of emotions were kind of exploding out of a bottle, and they truly were uncontrollable," he told Fox News Digital recently before the big race on Memorial Day weekend. "It was a very raw scene of what its like to be just right there, but just missing it. Its been a few times that thats happened, so thats why I think it was such a heavy emotion."I dedicate and do everything for this moment, and sometimes its just right there, but havent quite gotten it. Its just the human side of it, I would say."Despite the results of the last few years in Indianapolis, O'Ward's optimistic outlook on his profession has not wavered entering this year's race."I mean, this time last year, I had like three [did not finish] by this point," he said while laughing."Its one of the only months all year when you really get to enjoy the present, and youre not focused on the future, youre not focused on the past. Youre just focused on where youre at. Its a very amazing experience."The sting of defeat is something that almost never leaves the mind, even one full year after it happens. However, with every failure, an opportunity to learn comes, and that is exactly what O'Ward is getting from last year's finish."You gotta be up at the front the last stint," he said when asked what he learned from last year's runner-up finish. "The last stint is super important, but also a race that can turn around one lap to another just because of a yellow flag falling. Theres a lot of different strategies going on, and its a race that constantly wants you to be flexible, agile. You need to adjust sails, rather than go against it."In five starts this season, O'Ward is still searching for his first victory, though he has two top-five and three top-10 finishes. As a result, he is currently ranked fourth in NTT IndyCar Series standings.Perhaps his best race of the year came at the 2025 Grand Prix of Indianapolis this past weekend, finishing runner-up behind Alex Palou. While O'Ward is not currently dreaming again about celebrating with his Arrow McLaren team, kissing the famed Yard of Bricks, and chugging some milk, as is custom for the champion, it is in the back of his mind somewhere. That moment is what continues to drive him, especially knowing how close he was to realizing that dream."I think at this point, its a combination of a lot of different things, but it hasnt been a reason like, Hey, weve been lucky to have these opportunities. No, weve put ourselves in these opportunities, and we have earned ourselves the position to have these opportunities," he said. "I think that alone just gives me a peace of mind along with my core team. We know how to do this, we know how to put ourselves in positions to win this race."I think, deep down, it gives us a lot of self-confidence of were not searching for something that weve never been in or were not searching for something that havent done."TheIndy500 will be broadcast May 25 on FOX with pre-coverage starting at 10 a.m. ET. It will also be available to stream live on FOXSports.comand the FOX Sports app.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Pete Rose's last interviewer reacts to his Hall of Fame eligibility, praises Trump for kickstarting movement
John Condit was the last person to interview Pete Rose, doing so 10 days before his death for a documentary to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Rose breaking Ty Cobb's hit record. In that interview, the Major League Baseball (MLB) all-time hit king predicted that if he were to ever make the Hall of Fame, it would not be until after he died. Condit told Fox News Digital recently that he "began to shake" when he heard of Rose's death, considering what Rose had told him just days prior.Well, Rose's grim prediction is starting to look like it will come to fruition.MLB announced on Tuesday that those on baseball's ineligible list will be reinstated after their deaths - thus, Rose is now baseball eligible, along with "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and 15 others.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMIn turn, Rose is now eligible to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.Condit, a former sportscaster in nearby Dayton who grew up a Reds fan (Johnny Bench was his favorite), said that if Rose were to never be reinstated, the Cincinnati Reds' celebration of Rose at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night (scheduled before Rose's reinstatement) would have possibly been the final true celebration of Rose. That is why Condit recently kick-started a petition to get President Donald Trump to pardon Rose, a move the president said he would do "in the coming weeks" back in March, before the Reds honor Rose on Wednesday night."I love the fact that President Trump is considering using his pulpit to make this right, at least in the eyes of millions of baseball fans who say he did a lot of bad things off the field, he lied, but darn it, statistically he should be in the Hall of Fame. And that cant happen unless baseball says were going to reinstate him,'" Condit said in an interview with Fox News Digital before MLB's recent decision.Baseball ended up saying that.Condit does not need to rely on the president anymore, and it is now increasingly likely that Rose will be celebrated in upstate New York."I'm extremely happy. My fear was if this did not happen, that the greatest moment for Pete Rose after his passing would be Wednesday night at Cincinnati. Instead, we've got a celebration in Cincinnati that we didn't have three hours ago," Condit told Fox News Digital shortly after Rose's reinstatement. "Now, we got a real shot, a real shot for him to get into the Hall of Fame, which is what Pete Rose fans want. So I'm ecstatic."The Hall of Fame decided in 1991, two years after Rose's ban, that it would not have voting processes for players on baseball's ineligible list. As long as Rose was barred from the sport, the Hall did not budge. So, Trump and Manfred met last month, and it is largely assumed they spoke about Rose. Condit said he is "grateful" to both Trump and Manfred for Rose's significantly boosted odds (no pun intended) of getting into Cooperstown.2-TIME MVP BRYCE HARPER TURNS BACK THE CLOCK WITH MAJOR CHANGE AMID SLUMP"I believe [Trump] played a significant role in this for two reasons. One, he loves baseball, he loves Pete Rose. Two, who wants to say no to a president?" Condit said. "Who wants to get on the wrong side of a president when there's so much up? I give Commissioner Manfred a lot of credit. He could have toed the line and said, 'I'm going to stay with the tradition of keeping this punishment in place, and it is a punishment.' Or 'I'm going to turn a page and offer forgiveness to Pete, Joe Jackson and others.' People are going to love this."Condit's history with Rose dates back to the 1980s. He was actually interviewing Rose in 1989 when one of Rose's agents interrupted to inform Rose that MLB had begun an investigation into him for gambling. He was also in the press room when then-MLB Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti announced Rose's lifetime ban from the game."In 1989, before he got banned, I was at an event that Boomer Esiason ran for cystic fibrosis in the Cincinnati area. When Pete was done interviewing with me, I gave him a letter I wrote out and said, When you get on the plane, please read this. And it said if you did it, admit it. Were a very forgiving society, nobodys perfect, but if you did it, come clean now, and you will be forgiven by society. Itll be OK," Condit said in an interview with Fox News Digital before MLB announced its new ruling."When I interviewed him [last year], I asked him about that he didnt remember it, but I asked if he could do it differently. He said, 'No. I thought I could get away with it."That is why Condit understands both sides of the argument. Rose gambled on the game, lied about it for years and never seemed truly remorseful. Condit even said he wouldn't blame anybody for voting against Rose."No saint. In fact, did a lot wrong," Condit recently described Rose. However, "I believe in second chances and third chances and maybe seven chances. And I think statistically it's a great time to say, you know what? He paid his price. It's time for him to go to the Hall of Fame."Condit said he hopes the Rose family can eventually forgive Baseball and the Hall of Fame - even for Condit himself, there is still some anger."But all that ends well can be well, and this could end very, very well."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X,and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

ESPN's Tony Kornheiser explains why Pete Rose's reinstatement doesn't guarantee Hall of Fame
Baseball fans are already calling for Pete Rose to enter the Hall of Fame after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced he, alongside 16 deceased others, including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, were taken off the permanently ineligible list on Tuesday. However, Manfred is not the one that would be placing Rose in the hallowed halls of Cooperstown, as ESPNs Tony Kornheiser reminded all those fans on Tuesday."Rob Manfred does not put you in the Hall of Fame. The baseball writers, who are members, put you in the Hall of Fame," Kornheiser said on "Pardon the Interruption.""Those baseball writers, as we know well, are guardians of the game. They take violations very seriously. Joe Jackson fixed games, OK? Pete Rose bet on games as a manager of one team. That doesnt go away."CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMFans rushed to social media to voice their displeasure that MLB had waited until now to take Rose off its permanently ineligible list. With that, many felt the Hall of Fame was the right next step to rectify Roses absence from the game since the early 1990s.Kornheiser, though, brought up another class of baseball players that baseball writers have not voted into the Hall yet. "You know who else is eligible for the Hall of Fame right now? Barry Bonds is eligible, Mark McGwire is eligible," he said. "Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, theyre eligible. Are they getting in any time soon? Doesnt look that way from the voting."PETE ROSE'S REINSTATEMENT HAS BASEBALL FANS IN UPROAR: WHAT A SHAME THEY WAITED UNTIL NOWNow, this is not to say Kornheiser does not want to see Rose in the Hall one day."As you know, Mike (Wilbon), I would put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame," he added. "I would put his sins on the plaque and his accomplishments on the plaque. I agree that, when your life is gone, its OK to be eligible for something. But I do not see Pete Rose as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I just dont."Rose, the MLBs all-time hits leader, was added to the permanently ineligible list after it was found he gambled on games while as a player and manager. Rose initially denied the accusations, but in 2004, he came clean and admitted to gambling.Manfred announced that the players ineligibility from the game ends upon their deaths."Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game," Manfred wrote in a letter, obtained by ESPN, to attorney Jeffrey M. Lenkov."Moreover, it is hard to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect than one that lasts a lifetime with no reprieve. Therefore, I have concluded that permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual, and Mr. Rose will be removed from the permanently ineligible list."PresidentDonald Trumpannounced in March he would pardon Rose, who served five months in prison in 1990. In 2017, Rose was accused of statutory rape from an encounter decades earlier."Major League Baseball didnt have the courage or decency to put the late, great, Pete Rose, also known as Charlie Hustle, into the Baseball Hall of fame. Now he is dead, will never experience the thrill of being selected, even though he was a FAR BETTER PLAYER than most of those who made it, and can only be named posthumously. WHAT A SHAME!"Trump posted.Rose may be eligible for the Hall of Fame now, but it will be up to the baseball writers to vote him in to make it official.Fox News' Ryan Morik contributed to this report.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Ex-NFL star Clay Matthews dishes on hilarious Trump stunt at draft
Green Bay Packers great Clay Matthews pulled a hilarious stunt at the NFL Draft in Green Bay last month.Matthews, 38, was on stage to kick off the draft with other former Packers stars and superfan Lil Wayne. He stepped up the microphone and said he had a "message" to deliver from President Donald Trump.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"I just got off the phone with the president, Donald Trump. He asked me to pass a message along to all 32 NFL franchises. Let me tell you what it reads here, alright?" Matthews began."It says, My fellow Americans, the Bears still suck!"Matthews' stunt sent the Green Bay crowd and social media into a frenzy. The idea for the stunt began when he first found out he was going to be on stage."I looked at last year's (NFL Draft in Detroit) and it was Calvin Johnson, Barry Sanders, Aiden Hutchinson, Jared Goff, and I thought it was great. You got a mixture of legends and current players and but they all went up there, and they just screamed into the mic. I was just like I don't really just want to get up there and be like Green Bay make some noise so I was like let's make this memorable." Matthews said during a recent appearance on "Bussin With the Boys."The former Packers star certainly made it memorable. Matthews received his wifes blessing to go ahead with the plan, and then she provided some assistance as she photoshopped Trumps letterhead onto the paper.PACKERS LEGEND CLAY MATTHEWS TROLLS BEARS FANS WITH 'MESSAGE' FROM TRUMP AT NFL DRAFTMatthews did not tell the NFL what he was going to do, because he did not think the league would approve it."I didn't tell anybody because I knew the NFL wasn't going to approve it. I knew in today's political climate you mentioned one political affiliation, left, right, like it's just not going to go over well with the NFL," Matthews said.As Matthews waited for his moment backstage, the nerves set in as no one knew what was about to happen. However, it went smoothly."Execution, delivery, everything was on point. I was happy with how it landed the boys all behind me they enjoyed it they had no idea, so they were you know equally as fired up you know anytime you can take a chance to put the Bears down you got to take it," Matthews said. While it went smoothly onstage, Matthews was worried about the potential repercussions from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell backstage."I went backstage Im like, Oh now I got to face I got to face the wrath of Goodell and everybody else," Matthews said. However, the former Packers great said Goodell was "super cool" about it, and they asked to take a picture of the letter to put on social media. While it went well, Matthews said he would probably never be invited back for the epic stunt.Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
