House Republicans nearing vote on Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill'
House Republicans believe they are close to passing Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill. After the meeting at the White House, with the president and members of the Freedom Caucus, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) suggested that the House could vote in the overnight on the Big, Beautiful Bill. But it quickly became apparent that was a physical and parliamentary impossibility.GOP REBEL MUTINY THREATENS TO DERAIL TRUMPS BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL BEFORE KEY COMMITTEE HURDLEHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) later introduced a "managers amendment" to make final changes to the bill. Those alterations were designed to coax holdouts to vote yes.Its now likely that the House debates the bill in the early hours of Thursday with a vote in perhaps the late morning. But Democratic dilatory tactics could further delay passage of the bill. Its possible Democrats could engineer protest votes to "adjourn" the House. Calls to "adjourn" hold special privileges in the House and require immediate consideration.A USERS MANUAL TO WHERE WE STAND WITH THE 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL'House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) could also take advantage of a special debate time on the floor to "filibuster" the measure. Top House leaders from both parties are afforded whats called the "Magic Minute." Thats where they are allotted a "minute" to speak on an issue. But the House really allows them to speak as long as they wish out of deference to their position. Then-House Minority Leader and future Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) set the record for the longest speech in November, 2021, delaying considering of former President Bidens "Build Back Better" Act. McCarthy spoke for eight hours and 32 minutes.TRUMP'S 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL' FACES CRUCIAL HOURS AS JOHNSON COURTS FREEDOM CAUCUSThe House Freedom Caucus seems much more satisfied with the upcoming changes to the bill. Especially after the meeting with the president. But here is the main reason the House wants to move this as quickly as possible:Republicans dont want the bill to fester. Problems develop the longer this sits out there. So when you think you have the votes, you put it on the floor and force the issue. There could also be attendance problems later on Thursday or beyond. This subject has been jawboned to death for weeks. Johnson said weeks ago he wanted this passed by Memorial Day. So Johnson and President Trump want GOPers who are skeptical or holdouts to put up or shut up. You do that by putting the bill on the floor and requiring a vote. That said, its possible the GOP leadership might not have the votes ahead of the actual roll call vote. So calling a vote applies pressure on those holdouts. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) used to "grow" the vote on the House floor. In other words, they would start the vote not having all the ducks in order and then "grow" the vote during the actual roll call and cajoling or twisting arms. The same may happen today.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPAlso, if the vote is a little shy of passage, Republican leaders could hold the vote open and then single out those Republicans who have either voted no or have not cast ballots. Then the leadership can really turn up the heat and accuse them of not supporting the presidents agenda. If push comes to shove, they can then have the President weigh in and use his powers to coax those holdouts to vote yes.Heres the long-term outlook: If the House passes the bill, this goes to the Senate. This will be a project which will consume most of June. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) wants this done by July 4. But the question is what the Senate actually produces. The House and Senate must be on the same page. If the Senate crafts a different legislative product, then this must return to the House to sync up. Either the House eats what the Senate put together. Or the House and Senate must blend their differing versions together into a single, unified bill. That could take most of July. Remember that this bill includes an increase in the debt ceiling. The Treasury says Congress must lift the debt ceiling by early August.

California woman allegedly tried to smuggle 151 pounds of marijuana onto international flight
A California woman is accused of trying to smuggle 151 pounds of cannabis onto an international flight, officials announced this week.Diane Bahlawan, 34, was first arrested May 6 at San Francisco International Airport while attempting to board a United Airlines flight to Frankfurt, Germany, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.Airport security flagged Bahlawan's four roller bags for appearing unusually heavy. Inside, they reportedly discovered 131 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis. In addition to the cannabis, authorities also claimed to have seized Bahlawan's cellphone, boarding pass and $960 in cash.CBP OFFICERS SEIZE $875K IN MARIJUANA DISGUISED AS A SHIPMENT OF MEN'S OVERALLSBahlawan was charged with burglary and unlawful transport of marijuana, but was released from jail after posting bail. Her initial arraignment in court is scheduled for June 2."It is unusual for my office to get a marijuana transportation case through the airport that involves [this] much marijuana," San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe told Fox News Digital, noting that the U.S. Attorneys Office has equal jurisdiction over cases like these."They tend to take the big ones and we get the smaller ones," Wagstaffe continued. "So this is a large amount for us to handle. But we are glad to prosecute whatever the Federal authorities leave for us."CBP SEIZES MASSIVE HAUL OF 150,000 ILLEGAL CIGARETTES FROM CRUISE PASSENGERS IN CALIFORNIAThe district attorney's office indicated that further details of the case will be made public following the suspect's court appearance, according to the Chronicle.Bahlawan's case is not the only one of its kind to come out of California or San Francisco International Airport in recent months. In February, a 25-year-old Australian national was arrested at the travel hub on multiple felony charges after she was reportedly caught with 44 pounds of methamphetamine, according to local outlet KTVU.Then, in April, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized roughly 150,000 cigarettes from a couple disembarking at the Long Beach Cruise Ship Terminal after returning from Ensenada, Mexico.

Trump Gold Card visa program to launch online within weeks, commerce secretary says
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Wednesday that the Trump Gold Card, which makes it possible for any foreigner to buy a visa for $5 million, will be available online within weeks.Lutnick was a guest at Axios streamed event, Building the Future, Wednesday, where he was interviewed by company co-founder Mike Allen about several topics, including President Donald Trumps offering of a Gold Card.In March, Trump said the Gold Card would go on sale "very, very soon," explaining it would be like a green card, "but better and more sophisticated." He said the newest path to citizenship in the U.S. would allow the "most successful job-creating people from all over the world to buy a path to citizenship."Allen asked Lutnick when the $5 million Gold Card would be available, and Lutnick said he expected a website called trumpcard.gov to be up and running in about a week.TRUMP VOWS TO REFUND, DEPORT ANY 'UNSAVORY' IMMIGRANTS WHO TRY FOR CITIZENSHIP UNDER POTENTIAL 'GOLD CARD'"The details of that will come soon after, but people can start to register. And all that will come over a matter of the next weeks not month, weeks," Lutnick said.He also shared a story about a recent "great dinner" in the Middle East with about 400 people.During the dinner, Lutnick said, he had his phone out when one of the senior leaders walked by and asked why his phone was out."I go, I am selling him cards," Lutnick said. "So, basically everyone I meet whos not an American is going to want to buy the card if they have the fiscal capacity."TRUMP CONTINUES TO PUSH ALTERNATIVE TO CONTROVERSIAL VISA AMID CONCERNS ABOUT CHINESE INFLUENCEHe acknowledged that not everyone will be able to afford a Gold Card, but it will be available to those who can afford to help America pay off its debt."Why wouldnt they want a plan B that says God forbid something bad happens, you come to the airport in America and the person in immigration says, Welcome home. Right? As opposed to, Where the heck am I going if something bads happening in my country," Lutnick continued. He noted that everyone will be vetted for a card, adding those who come in with $5 million for a visa are going to be "great people who are going to come and bring businesses and opportunity to America. And theyre going to pay $5 million."Lutnick offered one more hypothetical scenario, saying if 200,000 people purchase the Gold Card for $5 million, that's $1 trillion.TRUMP TOUTS $5 MILLION GOLD CARD AS NEW PATH TO CITIZENSHIP"Remember, we get 280,000 visas per year now for free, not counting the 20 million people who broke into this country for nothing under Biden," Lutnick said. "And, so, I want you to think about that. We give it away for free and said Donald Trumps gonna bring in a trillion dollars for what purpose? To make America better. And it makes perfect sense to me."TRUMPS GOLD CARD VISA COULD INVITE FRAUD, NATIONAL SECURITY RISKS: EXPERTTrump has previously touted his plan before to attract the worlds wealthiest to become U.S. citizens, though it comes at a time when he is both clamping down on illegal migration and as universities are increasingly in the spotlight amid soaring school costs and crippling student loans. After Trumps announcement in March, Lora Ries, director of the Heritage Foundation's Border Security and Immigration Center, warned it could invite fraud."Any immigration benefit draws fraud. People are willing to do anything and say just about anything to come to the U.S.," Ries told Fox News Digital. In an interview in February with Fox News Chief Political Anchor Bret Baier on "Special Report," Lutnick said all candidates will be "deeply vetted.""These are vetted people," Lutnick told Baier. "These are going to be great global citizens who are going to bring entrepreneurial spirit, capacity and growth to America. If one of them comes in, think of the jobs they are going to bring with them, the businesses they are going to bring with them, and they are going to pay American taxes as well. So, this is huge money for America."Fox News Digitals Caitlin McFall contributed to this report.

Idaho murder suspect's lawyers demand trial postponement over 'prejudicial' TV special
Attorneys for Bryan Kohberger, who has been accused of killing four University of Idaho students, are asking that his trial be delayed. The court filing cites that a recent NBC "Dateline" special has caused prejudice towards Kohberger and that they now need additional time to prepare. The defense also believes that moving forward would infringe on Kohbergers constitutional rights.JUDGE SAYS GAG ORDER 'LIKELY' VIOLATED IN BRYAN KOHBERGER'S IDAHO MURDER CASE"Motion to Continue due to the substantial amount of trial investigation and preparation still outstanding, as well as recent and forthcoming publicity that is highly prejudicial to the defense," the filing said. "Any conviction and sentence resulting from a capital trial beginning in August 2025 will be unconstitutionally imposed and, therefore, vulnerable to reversal on direct or collateral review."New information about the murders was presented during the May 9 NBC "Dateline" program, which included surveillance footage from a nearby house. The surveillance video showed a car similar to Kohberger's that was in the area of the King Road house several times just before the four students were killed.IDAHO STUDENT MURDERS: BRYAN KOHBERGER'S FAMILY COULD BE ASKED TO TESTIFY AGAINST HIM, COURT DOCS REVEALThe episode also suggested that some of the information aired was nonpublic. According to the documents, the material was obtained from sources close to the investigation.Kohbergers attorneys also brought up concerns regarding an upcoming book on the case. They claim in the filing that the book's promotional blurb implies the information leaked to the Dateline crew was not the only incident."A continuance is necessary to fully investigate the leaks and to mitigate the prejudicial effects of such inflammatory pretrial publicity occurring so close to the current trial date," it stated.Forensic expert and Jacksonville State University Professor Joseph Scott Morgan told Fox News Digital there's a risk that the TV episode on Kohberger will taint the jury pool."I think the first place you have to look is the tainting of the pool, of the jury pool," Morgan said. "Progressively, it becomes more and more difficult because people form opinions, they put things out there that are not true, and you still have yet to pick a jury. And it's not like you're going to Manhattan. You're talking about Ada County, Idaho. You have a limited pool of potential jurors there."

Brain surgeon testifies John O'Keefe died from fall on frozen ground in Karen Read trial
John O'Keefe died from falling backwards and hitting his head on frozen ground, according to a Yale-educated brain surgeon who testified Wednesday in the murder trial of Karen Read.Read, 45, is accused of killing her then-boyfriend, the 46-year-old O'Keefe, by hitting him with her 2021 Lexus SUV on Jan. 29, 2022, then leaving him to die on the ground in a blizzard in Canton, Massachusetts, about 20 miles south of Boston. The head trauma and skull fractures he sustained, coupled with hypothermia from the cold, would not have killed him immediately, according to Dr. Aizik Wolf, who testified he treated many similar injuries in his career working in Minneapolis."The only way he could get this kind of an injury was to fall backwards, hit the back of his head, and then the resulting energy forces going into his brain, into the base of his skull," he told the jury during questioning from special prosecutor Hank Brennan.KAREN READ TRIAL WITNESS FACES BRUTAL CROSS-EXAMINATION OVER VEHICLE DATAO'Keefe suffered "a classic blunt-trauma injury," Wolf said.O'Keefe fell backwards and hit his head, Wolf said, and the force of the impact fractured his skull and later resulted in "raccoon eyes," which look like black eyes."This is what happens when soft tissue hits a solid ground," he testified.Swelling in the victim's brain would have killed him under normal circumstances, usually within 24 to 48 hours, according to Wolf. Some victims have died in as little as one to three. In the January nor'easter, O'Keefe's body temperature also tanked. When paramedics found him at 6 a.m., his temperature was just 80 degrees, below the threshold for what medical professionals call "severe hypothermia."Wolf said he treated many patients with similar injuries early in his career, when he worked in a Minneapolis trauma center. The city can be brutally cold during winter. Many of the wounds were fatal. Some were inflicted on drunken patients who slipped on the ice. Others involved people who fell over after suffering a heart attack."This testimony from Dr. Wolf sets up the commonwealths argument for count 2, the involuntary manslaughter charge," said Grace Edwards, a Massachusetts defense attorney who is following the case. "The commonwealth will argue to the jury that if they cannot find that Karen Read caused John OKeefes death intentionally, counts 1 and 3, then her driving or sideswipe of him and then leaving him injured was the wanton and reckless act, which contributed to his death, then they should find Karen Read guilty of count 2."EXPERT WITNESS IN KAREN READ MURDER TRIAL CAUGHT WITH 'ERRORS' INFLATING HIS CREDENTIALSAccording to Wolf's bio at the Miami Neuroscience Center, he is a world-leading authority in his field and the clinic's director.A short cross-examination by defense attorney Robert Alessi discussed separate injuries that O'Keefe sustained, which were not connected to the head trauma that killed him.STATE TROOPER POINTS TO POSSIBLE WEAPON IN JOHN O'KEEFE DEATH AND IT'S NOT KAREN READ'S CAR"I thought Attorney Alessi did a good job redirecting Dr. Wolf from the back of the head to the front of the head and eliciting testimony that those injuries were likely not from a fall," Edwards told Fox News Digital. "This supports the defense theory that John OKeefe was not hit by a vehicle and suggests it was something else because of the laceration to his face and the injuries to the arm, and the investigation did not pursue any other leads to determine how John OKeefe sustained those injuries."Wolf started the day on the stand. After his testimony, Christina Hanley of the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab returned to the witness stand. She is an expert on glass and plastic fragments who analyzed the broken cocktail glass found outside 34 Fairview Road and on the back bumper of Read's Lexus SUV, as well as pieces of the broken taillight.FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON XHer testimony had been interrupted at the early end of the day on Tuesday. She said Wednesday afternoon that some of the plastic debris recovered from O'Keefe's clothing was "consistent" with the materials used in Read's Lexus but could have come from another source with similar characteristics.During cross-examination, she revealed that none of the broken glass on Read's bumper matched the shattered cocktail glass found in the yard near O'Keefe.GET REAL-TIME UPDATES DIRECTLY ON THE TRUE CRIME HUBDefense attorney Alan Jackson had her explain that the only thing any of the bumper glass matched was a glass sample recovered by former Trooper Michael Proctor, who was fired in March after an internal probe into inappropriate text messages he sent during the investigation.Earlier in the trial, the defense played video showing Proctor standing near the rear of the vehicle, out of camera view, while it was at the Canton Police Department headquarters.Proctor, through his family, has maintained that his investigation was in line with the evidence and conducted with integrity.Read could face life in prison if convicted of the top charge, second-degree murder. She is also accused of drunken driving, manslaughter and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.Fox News' Andrew Fone contributed to this report.

Knicks choke away double-digit lead late after Pacers pull off Reggie Miller-esque heroics
With Reggie Miller on the call, the Indiana Pacers paid homage to their franchise legend on Wednesday night.Well, it wasn't a direct homage -- but the New York Knicks, in their first Eastern Conference Finals game of the 21st century, blew a double-digit fourth-quarter lead to drop Game 1 against Indiana, 138-135.New York led by as many as 17 with just over six minutes to go, and even by 14 with less than three, but it was no match for the Pacers.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAaron Nesmith did his best Miller impression by drilling six consecutive three-pointers to help Indiana cut their deficit to just two points with 22.1 seconds to go. After the Knicks, on two occasions, went 1-for-2 from the line, Tyrese Haliburton hit a buzzer-beater that he thought was a three and did Miller's infamous choke signal while pointing at him. But, Haliburton's toe was on the line, and the game headed to overtime.New York got out to a four-point lead to start overtime, but a 5-0 Pacers run gave them their first lead since it was 45-44 in the second quarter. Neither team got out to more than a one-point lead for the next two-plus minutes, until former Knick Obi Toppin slammed one home with 15.3 seconds left to go up three.
