FBI Director Kash Patel vows justice after DHS agent's vehicle rammed in Chicago
FBI Director Kash Patel promised justice after two suspects allegedly rammed a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent's vehicle amid growing unrest across the country. The suspects, Marimar Martinez and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, were described by DHS as being domestic terrorists who "ambushed" agents in Chicago on Saturday.Martinez was armed with a semi-automatic weapon and "ha[d] a history of doxxing federal agents," the DHS said in a release."She took defensive fire from CBP agents and has been discharged from the hospital and is currently in the custody of the FBI," the statement said.ICE OFFICERS IN ILLINOIS TARGETED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WHO USED 'VEHICLES AS WEAPONS,' OFFICIALS SAY"The driver of another vehicle, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, involved in the ramming has been apprehended by law enforcement."In a post on Sunday evening, Patel said that officials "just arrested two individuals who were allegedly driving these vehicles and attacking our federal law enforcement officers.""They have been charged for assaulting federal officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon," Patel added."Attack our law enforcement, and this FBI will find you and bring you to justice."CHICAGO POLICE ORDERED NOT TO RESPOND AFTER CAR-RAMMING ATTACK ON FEDERAL AGENTS: SOURCESA source from the FBI told Fox News Digital that the cases are being treated as AFOs, or assaults on federal officers. The source added that Martinez and Santos Ruiz are being prosecuted under Title 18, U.S. Code, Sections 111(a) and (b), which make it a federal crime to forcibly assault, resist or impede a federal officer while that officer is performing official duties. In the DHS release, officials noted that the scene became "increasingly violent as more domestic terrorists gathered and began throwing smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles at DHS law enforcement.""Another domestic terrorist was arrested for assaulting CBP at the scene," the statement added. "Following JB Prtizkers refusal to allow local police to help secure the scene, Secretary Noem has deployed special operations teams to restore law and order."Two suspects were arrested in similar incidents in Chicagoland on Friday. The suspects, Miguel Escareno De Loera and Widman Osberto Lopez-Funes, were both accused of weaponizing their vehicles in "deliberate attempts to ram and injure" ICE officers, according to officials.

Pritzker says Trump ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard to Illinois, Oregon and other locations
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced on Sunday that President Donald Trump will deploy 400 members of the Texas National Guard to Illinois, Oregon and other locations. The deployment came as protests against federal law enforcement ramp up across the country, particularly in Portland and Chicago. In the Windy City, multiple people were arrested in recent days for reportedly ramming their vehicles into DHS and ICE agents' cars. After announcing Trump's deployment on X late Sunday, Pritzker wrote that "no officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate."CHICAGO ANTI-ICE PROTESTERS BLOCK VEHICLES, GET HIT WITH TEAR GAS AND PEPPER BALLS"We must now start calling this what it is: Trumps Invasion," the Democratic governor wrote."It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another states military troops."Pritzker also disclosed that he called Texas Governor Greg Abbot to "immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate."ANTI-ICE PORTLAND RIOTERS WITH GUILLOTINE CLASH WITH POLICE IN WAR-LIKE SCENES"There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation," the governor added."The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness."In recent days, large numbers of protesters have rioted against immigration enforcement actions across the country. ICE shared a video of a Portland protester being wheeled into custody on Sunday. In Broadview, Illinois, on Friday, more than a dozen people were arrested by federal agents during protests at an ICE processing facility. Agents were seen firing pepper balls, tear gas and rubber bullets to clear crowds.

National police union calls Chicago's refusal to help ICE agents 'shocking' violation of duty
The nations largest police union condemned reports that Chicago officers were told not to help ICE agents surrounded by protesters, calling it "shocking" and a violation of law enforcements duty to protect fellow officers in danger.Presidents of the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and Illinois State FOP expressed shock at reports that Chicago's chief of patrol directed officers not to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as they were surrounded by protesters on Saturday."Details are still emerging, but it appears that officers from the Chicago Police Department were ordered not to assist a group of ICE agents while they were physically threatened by what appeared to be an angry mob," said National FOP President Patrick Yoes in a press release. "Let me be clear, both the National FOP and the Illinois FOP believe that when an officer calls for assistance, you answer, no matter what."Yoes and Illinois State FOP President Chris Southwood said the directive violated the most basic principle of law enforcement officers helping other officers in danger.EX-POLICE CHIEF WARNS CHICAGO COPS WILL GET HURT BECAUSE MAYOR JOHNSON WONT HELP ICEThey cited the Illinois Trust Act, which limits local police involvement in immigration enforcement, and said it is contributing to a breakdown between local and federal law enforcement, particularly in sanctuary cities like Chicago. The FOP also cited Department of Homeland Security data showing ICE agents have faced a 1,000% increase in violence since the start of the year.Southwood called the alleged order a dangerous precedent for all law enforcement officers.CHICAGO ANTI-ICE PROTESTERS BLOCK VEHICLES, GET HIT WITH TEAR GAS AND PEPPER BALLS"The number one unwritten rule in law enforcement is that we respond to any calls from officers in distress," Southwood said. "What would have happened if the local police were facing threats and nearby federal officers were told not to assist? Whether you agree about immigration enforcement or not, when a law enforcement officer is in trouble, nothing should stand in the way of fellow officers rendering assistance."Yoes echoed Southwood, stressing that it is more important than ever for police officers to band together to protect their brothers and sisters who wear the badge."We at the National FOP, as well as our members at the Illinois FOP, condemn these actions and urge Chicago officials to ensure that any law enforcement officer needing assistance is guaranteed that their brothers and sisters in law enforcement respond expeditiously," Yoes said.CHICAGO POLICE ORDERED NOT TO RESPOND AFTER CAR-RAMMING ATTACK ON FEDERAL AGENTS: SOURCESTheir comments followed Fox News report revealing that Chicago police officers were ordered by their chief of patrol not to respond after Border Patrol agents called for help, saying they were boxed in and surrounded following a ramming incident outside the city, according to multiple federal and Chicago law enforcement sources.Fox News reviewed the computer-aided dispatch message sent to Chicago police officers by their chief of patrol. It instructed officers not to respond to a Saturday morning ramming incident on the southwest side of the city in which an armed woman was shot and agents were boxed in and surrounded. The Chicago Police Department issued a statement on Sunday disputing claims that officers failed to respond, saying they were on the scene to maintain public safety and document the incident."To clarify misinformation currently circulating, CPD officers did in fact respond to the shooting scene involving federal authorities on Saturday to maintain public safety and traffic control," the department said.CPD added that federal authorities are leading the investigation into the shooting, but that officers were present to ensure safety. Later that afternoon, police also responded to a separate call involving two hit-and-run crashes affecting federal personnel, the department said."The Chicago Police Department will always respond to anyone who is being attacked or is under the threat of physical harm," the department said. "For incidents involving federal immigration enforcement, CPD supervisors will respond to the scene and determine the appropriate course of action in accordance with City law."But two longtime ranking Chicago police sources sharply rejected the departments assertion that officers responded to calls for help from ICE agents who were rammed and surrounded by protesters, telling Fox News it was, in their words, "COVER THEIR A-- BULLS--T!!"One ranking source told Fox News the Chicago Police Departments statement was "not true," saying dispatch audio proves it. The source said officers had responded but had to leave because of the order.Fox News Bill Melugin, Matt Finn and Michael Tobin contributed to this report.

Drake Maye leads Patriots to upset victory over previously undefeated Bills
The New England Patriots made sure every team in the NFL had a loss this season, as they pulled off the upset against the Buffalo Bills in a 23-20 win on the road on Sunday night. After the Denver Broncos defeated the Philadelphia Eagles earlier on Sunday, the Bills were the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL. But Drake Maye and the Patriots came into their AFC East battle with confidence and the right answer for Josh Allen on the defensive side of the ball.It wasnt the best start for either team in terms of execution as we had back-to-back fumbles in the first quarter after Allen and Dawson Knoxs handoff fell to the turf. But the Patriots gave it right back as Rhamondre Stevenson, who has had trouble fumbling early this season, was stripped after catching a pass from Maye.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAfter multiple punts, Keon Coleman, Allens trusty wide receiver, uncharacteristically fumbled later in the first quarter as well. Buffalo was also being penalized during their drives, constantly killing momentum. The Patriots finally got on the board first with a field goal in the first quarter, which Matt Prater of the Bills followed up on in the second quarter. There were no touchdowns by either team in the first half, though the Patriots owned a 6-3 lead entering the locker room. Both offenses would turn it up in the second half, though, and it began when the Bills used its opening drive to take a 10-6 lead after Curtis Samuel went untouched on a short pass from Allen into the end zone.CONTROVERSIAL NO-CALL IN EAGLES' LOSS TO BRONCOS SENDS NFL FANS INTO FRENZYHowever, Maye had the answer for the Bills, and needed just five plays to do so thanks to a 32-yard catch by Stefon Diggs, who was the games leading receiver in his return to Buffalo, a city he was so beloved in for years as Allens favorite target. Diggs finished the game with 146 yards on 10 catches.Stevenson got into the end zone to retake the lead, and the Patriots defense once again came through with a turnover to keep momentum on their side. On the ensuing drive, Allen was moving downfield when Marcus Jones jumped a pass intended for Khalil Shakir and intercepted the Bills star to flip the field.Maye used that turnover to go 90 yards on 11 plays, capped by Stevensons second touchdown of the night to take a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. But, as weve seen so many times in the past, Allen responded when his team needed to do so. Keon Coleman ran his play-action route perfectly from the New England two-yard line and he was uncovered for a short pass from Allen to make it a three-point game. After getting a stop on the ensuing Patriots drive, Allen had the chance for another touchdown drive to perhaps win the game. But a stellar pass deflection by Christian Gonzalez on third-and-10 made Prater try a field goal just to tie the game. So, instead of Allen going down the field for the win, it was Maye. With 2:17 left on the clock, Maye was calm as he found Diggs and Keyshon Boutte for chunk yardage as they got into field goal range for rookie Andy Borregales out of Miami. From 52 yards out, Borregales first nail-biting kick couldnt have gone better, as he split the uprights right down the middle to take the lead with 15 seconds left to play. That was the game, as the Bills were out of timeouts and couldnt get the clock on their side.In the box score, Maye was 22-of-30 for 273 yards, while a modest 71 yards rushing from the team was seen. For the Bills, Allen went 22-of-31 for 253 yards with two touchdowns and one interception with Dalton Kincaid his leading receiver with 108 yards on six catches. The Patriots held James Cook in check throughout the night, too, as he had just 49 yards on 15 rush attempts. Allen led Buffalo in the run game with 53 yards on nine carries.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

A Buffalo Bills fan saw his opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime souvenir and took it.Josh Allen was leading the Bills down the field on the opening drive of the second half against the New England Patriots on Sunday night. Instead, he threw the ball into the back of the end zone.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMA Bills fan in a Matt Milano jersey caught the ball and immediately ran from his seat at Highmark Stadium up the stairs, presumably looking for the exit. The moment stunned NBC broadcaster Mike Tirico, who wondered where the man was going with the football. The score gave Buffalo a 10-6 lead at the time.Buffalo lost the game, 23-20.Its the second odd moment involving Bills fans at Highmark Stadium during the season so far.CARDINALS' COMEDY OF ERRORS RESULTS IN TITANS COMEBACK CAPPED WITH WALK-OFF FIELD GOAL FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASONDuring the first Sunday night game of the year, a Bills fan hit Baltimore Ravens star DeAndre Hopkins on the helmet following a touchdown celebration. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson responded by pushing the fan back into their seat. The fan was reportedly banned indefinitely from Highmark Stadium and other NFL venues.Allen needled Bills fans for leaving early that night as they completed a comeback victory against the Ravens. Federal judge blocks Trump's National Guard deployment to Portland amid constitutional challenge
A federal judge blocked President Donald Trumps efforts to deploy National Guard troops into Portland in a late-night decision on Sunday.U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut ruled the action was unlawful and unconstitutional, issuing an emergency temporary restraining order to halt the deployment of Californias National Guard. The order also bars the use of troops from any other state or Washington, D.C. in Oregon.Immerguts ruling says that the Trump administrations action violates federal statute 10 U.S.C. 12406 and the Tenth Amendment."It appears to violate both 10 U.S.C. 12406 and the Tenth Amendment," Immergut said during the proceeding, according to reporting from Adam Klasfeld of AllRise News.NEWSOM SUES TRUMP ADMINISTRATION OVER CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT ORDER TO OREGONImmergut also pressed Justice Department attorney Eric Hamilton on why the DOJ continued to pursue troop movements."How could bringing in federalized National Guard from California not be in direct contravention of the TRO that I issued yesterday?" she asked."Youre an officer of the court. Arent defendants circumventing my order?"Hamilton went on to deny any wrongdoing but did offer a defense to which Immergut pushed back."You have to have a colorable claim that Oregon conditions warrant deploying the National Guard you dont."TRUMP'S 'WAR-RAVAGED PORTLAND' NATIONAL GUARD DEPLOYMENT HALTED BY FEDERAL JUDGE OVER AUTHORITY CONCERNSOregons Scott Kennedy said it felt like "a game of rhetorical Whac-A-Mole" and referenced reports that Trump may be considering sending Texas National Guard troops to Chicago.DOJ representatives requested a stay, but Immergut denied both the stay and the administrative delay, saying it was an "emergency" and there were no new facts to justify the request to change her previous ruling."Im handling this on an emergency basis with limited briefing," she said. "No new information has been provided about any new issues in Portland."California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) immediately took to X to boast."BREAKING: We just won in court again. A federal judge BLOCKED Donald Trumps unlawful attempt to DEPLOY 300 OF OUR NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO PORTLAND. The court granted our request for a Temporary Restraining Order HALTING ANY FEDERALIZATION, RELOCATION, OR DEPLOYMENT of ANY GUARD MEMBERS TO OREGON FROM ANY STATE. Trumps abuse of power wont stand," the post stated. The Justice Department has made indications that it will be appealing the ruling with arguments that the president retains authority under federal law to deploy National Guard forces in cases of "domestic unrest."

More lawmakers say they're rejecting paychecks as government shutdown drags on
A growing number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have declared they're forgoing their paychecks as the government shutdown drags on.The federal government has been shut down for nearly a week after Senate Democrats rejected Republicans' plan to fund agencies through Nov. 21 multiple times.Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, Tom Barrett, R-Mich., Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, and Rob Bresnahan, R-Pa., are among the Republicans who wrote to the Chief Administrative Officer of the U.S. House of Representatives asking for their pay to be withheld during a shutdown.SHUTDOWN EXPLAINED: WHO WORKS, WHO DOESN'T AND HOW MUCH IT COSTSDemocrats like Reps. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., and Lou Correa, D-Calif., have requested the same. But lawmakers requesting their pay be withheld cannot forgo it altogether, because federal law requires them to be paid.Article I of the Constitution states, "The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States."Further, the 27th Amendment prevents any changes to congressional pay until after the next election.GOP ACCUSES DEMS OF RISKING SHUTDOWN TO RESTORE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT HEALTHCAREMost House and Senate lawmakers are paid $174,000 yearly a figure that has not changed since 2009 while members of congressional leadership can earn more.A source familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital that members of Congress can elect to have their pay withheld until a shutdown is over, but they must receive that as backpay when the government is funded again.Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y., the top Democrat on the Committee for House Administration, told Bloomberg Government last week that those checks can go into an account separate from lawmakers' usual salaries. He told the outlet, "Its an administrative way of withholding pay for people who choose to."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPCongressional staffers, meanwhile, automatically miss paychecks if their pay period falls during a government shutdown but that is also backpaid when the shutdown ends. Some lawmakers, like Sens. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have announced they would donate their paychecks for the duration of the shutdown."Each day the government remains closed, I will be donating my salary to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, which provides help to vulnerable populations who may be impacted by this reckless choice," Moody said in a statement last week.

Five ways the Trump administration can save the American Dream and prevent socialism
Young people are demoralized and are turning to the promises of socialism. While socialism is entirely decoupled from reality, young Americans are frustrated, believing that the American Dream is out of reach. In a recent survey, almost a third of Millennials and nearly 40% of Gen Z said they believe they will never own a home. While wrongly identifying capitalism as the culprit for the ills of cronyism and central planning, including monetary and fiscal policy that has increased the cost of living, their concerns are real and valid. Whereas in the past, there have been periods with high interest rates with reasonable home prices, and periods with low interest rates and high home prices, would-be homebuyers today are contending with both.If a home is the physical embodiment of the American Dream, it shouldnt feel out of reach. Here are some suggestions to once again make the American Dream attainable.FAITH IN AMERICAN DREAM DWINDLES AMID SOUR ECONOMIC SENTIMENTS, POLL FINDSLower mortgage rates through more assumable loansIt is estimated that less than a quarter of mortgages in the US are assumable. Many homebuyers financed or refinanced their homes during the Feds 15-year low-interest rate bonanza and therefore, dont want to sell their homes and give up their low mortgage interest rates. This has clogged up the housing market.Furthermore, todays mortgage rates, coupled with high housing costs, are making the homes that are available too costly. The government should work with the banks to make more mortgages assumable (of course, making sure the assuming party is creditworthy, and perhaps limiting that to homes that will be primary residences). While banks generate sizable fees from loan originations, right now, the clogged market is limiting their business anyway. If loan assumability came with a right of first refusal for the lending institution to refinance the remainder needed for the mortgage, it would be a win-win. Banks would increase originations and the blended rate would be lower for homebuyers.Plus, taxpayers have helped the banks out a lot, to put it mildly, over the past few decades, so getting some concessions on their side is quite fair.Create incentives for smaller footprint housingOne of the reasons that housing is so expensive is that we have had square footage creep. Homes today, on average, are more than double the size they were in the 1950s. Per US Census Bureau data, new construction homes averaged 983 square feet in the 1950s, 1,200 square feet in the 1960s, around 1,500 square feet in the 1970s and are between 2,200 and 2,300 square feet on average today, even though the household size has shrunk. Note that median data for the period was similar. It's a complicated matter. Why would a homebuilder choose to build a smaller home when they could make a bigger profit on a larger one for an incremental amount of extra work? This is where tax incentives, both locally and federally, could help prompt builders to build smaller footprint housing that would also be more affordable, particularly for young people.Fix balance sheets by solving the student loan burdenEven if a house is in range of a potential homebuyers earnings, if they are saddled with debt, making a home purchase becomes a non-starter.The US government is the largest predatory lender in the country, saddling teenagers and young adults with tens of thousands of dollars in debt and delaying their ability to make investments, while enriching colleges and their administrators. Getting the government out of student lending and thereby making colleges and universities right-size education costs to the value the education provides will clean up young peoples personal balance sheets and help make homeownership more attainable. You can read more of my thoughts on how to do that here.Address rising property taxes and insuranceIts one thing to be able to afford buying a house. Its quite another thing to afford the ongoing carrying costs. Property taxes and insurance have become incredibly cumbersome. It is reported that, on average, taxes and insurance make up almost a third of single-family mortgage payments, and for 9% of single-family homeowners, taxes and insurance comprise more than half of the mortgage payment. There should be an effort, even if undertaken at the local level, to dial back these costs, or fewer Americans will never be able to afford a house (not to mention the overall questionable moral framework for property taxes).CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONAddress corporations buying single family homesThis is an area that I wrote about extensively in my last bestselling book, You Will Own Nothing. Before 2010, there was effectively no institutional money buying single-family homes. But, in Q1 2025, nearly 27% of single-family homes purchased were bought by investors, with some portion of that being institutional buyers. Many of the institutionally-backed companies convert single-family homes they purchase to rental properties, taking those dwellings out of the buyable supply and renting Americans back a shadow of the American Dream. While I hate central planning and prefer free markets, there has been nothing free market about the advantages that give these companies the ability to get cheap capital and go in and compete for single-family homes. Additional fees, taxes or limitations, at least until the market is normalized, could be a good way to level the playing field for average Americans. The housing problem may be temporary, as baby boomers will eventually age out and sell their homes. However, it is still worthwhile to come up with solutions today, even if short-term, to make owning a home a realistic, attainable, goal for hardworking Americans.

SEN SANDERS: AI must benefit everyone, not just a handful of billionaires
Everybody agrees that artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are going to have a transformative impact on our country and the world. There are strong disagreements, however, as to what those impacts will be who will benefit from them and who will be hurt. One thingisfor sure. This is an enormously important issue that has not gotten the kind of discussion that it deserves.Heres my take.JOBS THAT ARE MOST AT RISK FROM AI, ACCORDING TO MICROSOFTSome of the very wealthiest people in the world, including Elon Musk, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos are now investing hundreds of billions into these revolutionary technologies. Why is that?Is it because they want to improve the standard of living of the 60% of our people who live paycheck-to-paycheck Americans who are struggling to pay for groceries, healthcare, housing and education? Maybe. But I doubt it.I think its because investing in AI and robotics willincrease their wealth and power exponentially. The artificial intelligence and robotics being developed by these multi-billionaires today will allow corporate America to wipe out tens of millions of decent-paying jobs, cut labor costs and boost profits. The result? The wealthiest people in the world will get even richer, while working people lose their jobs and their income. And unless we act, here is whats likely to happen in the next 10 years. As a member of Congress who vigorously opposed the disastrous trade agreements that decimated communities throughout this country, I, like most Americans, want to rebuild manufacturing in the United States. Butlets be clear: new factories wont mean much for workers if the jobs are done by robots instead of human beings.Elon Musk has said he wants Tesla to build millions of robots. And what will these robots do? They will replace the men and women working in factories, warehouses and in restaurants. That means millions of good jobs could disappear. Its not complicated. And, of course, its not just Musk.Amazon, owned by Jeff Bezos, hasalreadylaid off 27,000 workers since 2022.The company now has more thana million robots working initswarehousesand soonthose robots will outnumber human workersin Amazonfacilities. In 2016, Foxconn the massive manufacturing contractor for companies like Apple and Google replaced 60,000 workers in a single factory in China with robots. Now, the company is planning fully automated factories. And just a few months ago, Foxconns CEO, Young Liu, predicted that artificial intelligence will make it unnecessary for large corporations to outsource jobs to low-wage countries because robots will be doing most of the manufacturing work. However, its not just manufacturingjobs at risk. Most of us want to see the United States develop a strong, clean and efficient transportation system including theproduction of millions of new cars, buses and trucks. But, if Musk and others get their way, those vehicles wont be operated by truck drivers, bus driversortaxi drivers. They will be driverless vehicles.Millions of jobs in transportation will be eliminated. This is not science fiction. Its already happening.FedEx is using driverless trucks to haul heavy loads along the I-45 Corridor between Dallas and Houston through a company called Aurora. Walmart is using autonomous trucks for short-haul deliveries in Arkansas through a company called Gatik. Kodiak Robotics has partnered with IKEA to conduct driverless deliveries in Texas. Waymo is operating self-driving cabs in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Atlanta and Austin. We all want more start-up companies and small businesses but, for workers, that will mean very little if half of all white collar entry-level jobsareeliminated over the next 5 years. And that is exactly what has been predicted by Dario Amodei, the founder ofAnthropic, one of the leadingAIcompanies in the world. As the ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (HELP Committee), I released a report today finding thatAI, automation and robotics could replace nearly 100 million jobs in America over the next decade, including 40% of registered nurses, 47% of truck drivers, 64% of accountants, 65% of teaching assistants and 89% of fast food workers, among many other occupations. And as bad as that may seem, I am afraid it may be an underestimate. In June, the CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, predicted thatAIcould eliminate "literally half of all white-collar jobs in the U.S." within the next decade.Musk said this year that, as a result ofAIand robotics, "probably none of us will have a jobIf you want a job thats kind of like a hobby you can do a job. But otherwise,AIand robotics will provide any goods and services you want."Earlier this year, Bill Gates predicted that humans "wont be needed for most things," such as manufacturing products, delivering packages, or growing food over the next decade due toAI.So, here is a rather big question. If Musk and Gates are only half right in their predictions, what happens to the tens of millions of Americans who no longer have employment because they cant find jobs that dont exist? In this brave new world, how do these Americans pay for health care, food, housing and the other necessities of life? Its not just economics. Work, whether being a janitor or a brain surgeon, is an integral part of being human. The vast majority of people want to be productive members of society and contribute to their communities. What happens when that vital aspect of human existence is removed from our lives?Further, and now we get into some pretty deep stuff, the rapid developments inAIwill likely have a profoundly dehumanizing impact on us all.In many ways, it will actually redefine what it means to be human, fundamentally alter our relationships to each other and the very nature of what we call "society."CanAIand robotics be of help to us in many ways? Yes. I believe they can. I am not a Luddite. The goal, however, is to make sure the new technologies serve human needs and not just further enrich a small number of multi-billionaires. We do not simply need a more "efficient" society. We need a world where people live healthier, happier and more fulfilling lives. So where do we go from here? Here are just a few ideas as to how the advances in technology can benefit ordinary Americans:First, we must move to a 32-hour workweek with no loss in pay. Think about it:today, American workers are 400% more productive than they were in the 1940s, when the 40-hour workweek was first established. Artificial intelligence and robotics will greatly accelerate that productivity.Workers must benefit from that increased output through a shorter workweek. A 32-hour workweek with no loss in pay would be a major step forward in improving the quality of life for millions of Americans.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONSecond, we must require large corporations to allow workers to elect at least 45 percent of the membersof their boards of directors similar to what takes place in Germany. Workers need a seat at the table to best determine howAIis used in their companies. If Teslaworkers were on their corporate board, I doubt they would be rewarding Musk with a trillion dollar pay package.Third, we must greatly increase profit sharing at our nations largest corporations. In my view, workers should receive at least 20% of the stock in the companies they work for. Corporate profits should not just be going to enrich wealthy stockholders and the billionaires who own them.Fourth, we need to substantially expand the concept of employee ownership in America. When workers own their own businesses and are more involved in the decision-making process, they will makechoicesthat benefit everyone in the company, not just the people on top.Fifth, instead of providing billions in tax breaks to companies that are throwing workers out on the street and replacing them with new technologies, we should enact a robot tax on large corporations and use the revenue to improve the lives of workers who have been harmed.Bottom line:AIand robotics will bring a profound transformation to our country. These changes must benefit all of us, not just a handful of billionaires.Lets start the debate.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM SEN. BERNIE SANDERS
