WWW.FOXNEWS.COMTurning Point USA rejects Jimmy Kimmel's tearful apology over Charlie Kirk death commentTurning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet criticized comedian Jimmy Kimmels reaction to backlash over his comments on Charlie Kirks killing, saying the late-night host offered excuses instead of the apology owed to the Kirk family and the country."What we need is, I'm sorry, I lied, I was wrong, and I won't do it again. And my apologies to the Kirk family and Erika Kirk," Kolvet said on "Americas Newsroom" Wednesday."When somebody like Jimmy Kimmel says that the shooter of Charlie was MAGA, what he's really saying is that it's OK to lie about conservatives, that their lives don't matter, that his agenda, his political agenda and cultural agenda, is more important than the life of my friend who was just taken from us and robbed from us."NEXSTAR, SINCLAIR EXPECT APOLOGY FROM KIMMEL BEFORE AGREEING TO REINSTATE SHOW: SOURCEKimmel was suspended for nearly a week after Disney and other broadcasters deemed his remarks insensitive following Kirks killing earlier this month. On Sept. 15, days after Kirks alleged killer was taken into custody, Kimmel said: "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."The suspension ended Tuesday, when Kimmel returned with a tearful statement."It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man," he said in part, adding that he did not mean to blame Trump supporters for the killing.CHARLIE KIRK ALLY RESPONDS TO DISNEY'S DECISION TO LIFT JIMMY KIMMEL'S SUSPENSIONKolvet dismissed the remarks as insufficient."Where was the, 'I'm sorry,' where was the contrition?" he asked."All he had to do was say simply, 'I am sorry, I won't do it again, I will do better.' Instead, he was defiant, he parsed his words, he tried to thread a needle and play both sides. And that's not how we get healing in this country."Kolvet argued Kimmels emotion came more from fear of cancellation than from genuine remorse."When people like Jimmy Kimmel skirt the truth, when they refuse to take accountability for their actions, then that sends a signal that there's a whole institutional machinery apparatus that's prepared to defend these evildoers. And that's not OK."LATE-NIGHT HOSTS STEPHEN COLBERT, JIMMY KIMMEL MOURN DEATH OF CHARLIE KIRKCLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREDuring his Tuesday night monologue, Kimmel also noted he was "touched deeply" by Erika Kirk, Charlies widow and new CEO of Turning Point USA, who publicly forgave her husbands alleged killer during a memorial service in Arizona on Sunday."If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do, there it was. Thats it. A selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply, and I hope it touches many, and if theres anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that," Kimmel said.Kolvet said that if Kimmel wants to be forgiven for his insensitive statements, he needs to take responsibility for what he said.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"I still want him to own it and be accountable to the audience, to the country, because it matters," he said.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMNexstar to continue not airing Kimmel's ABC show, in talks with Disney to ensure it 'respects' all audiencesNexstar Media Group, Inc., announced on Wednesday that it will continue preempting "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the time being, even as Disney is allowing the show to return to ABC."Nexstar is continuing to evaluate the status of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on our ABC-affiliated local television stations, and the show will be preempted while we do so," the company said in a statement. "We are engaged in productive discussions with executives at The Walt Disney Company, with a focus on ensuring the program reflects and respects the diverse interests of the communities we serve."This follows their previous statement on Tuesday where the company had declared, "We made a decision last week to preemptJimmy Kimmel Live!following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmels ill-timed and insensitive comments at a critical time in our national discourse. We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.""In the meantime, we note that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets," Nexstar added.Kimmel returned to the airwaves Tuesday after a brief suspension by Disney that began last week. He clarified his remarks about the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk and praised his widow Erika Kirk, but he did not offer a direct apology for appearing to falsely suggest the accused killer was a MAGA supporter. He also mocked Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr and President Donald Trump for their criticism of him and defended his right to free speech. This is a breaking news story. WWW.FOXNEWS.COMEagles great Jason Kelce rips NFL's expanded jersey number rulesFormer Philadelphia Eagles great Jason Kelce is not a fan of the jersey numbers that defensive players can now wear.Entering the 2021 season, the NFL expanded the jersey numbers that were available to certain position groups. Kelce yearns for the days when he could look at a jersey number and know which position a guy played."I like looking at a jersey and knowing without f---ing knowing the guy what position that guy played. There was something about the number signifying the position you played," Kelce said during a recent episode of "New Heights."CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"I f---ing hate that the NFL changed the rule for defensive linemen. I used to love these iconic numbers that defensive ends used to wear, linebackers used to wear. Now, I see a (defensive end) and hes wearing No. 1 or No. 11."I shouldnt be calling out No. 11. Hes a f---ing good player," Kelce said, referring to Micah Parsons.Defensive linemen are still restricted to Nos. 5079 and 9099, but linebackers who line up on the line of scrimmage were given more options with their jersey numbers. Previously, linebackers were restricted to Nos. 40-59 and 90-99, but now they can wear Nos. 0-59 and 90-99.NFL LEGEND DREW BREES CALLS EAGLES' OFFENSE 'BORING' DESPITE BEING 3-0"Im like f--- off. Like, wear No. f---ing 98 or something like that. Like, Im not into this. If youre a big body, youre playing the line of scrimmage, you have a big f---ing number. I dont want to see this skinny f---ing number bulls---."Defensive backs were previously restricted to Nos. 20-49 but now can wear Nos. 0-49."I dont like that now the numbers mean nothing on defense. Anybody can wear whatever the f--- they want and then, on offense, you still have ineligible numbers," Kelce said.On the offensive side of the ball, quarterbacks are now also allowed to wear No. 0 in addition to Nos. 1-19. Running backs and fullbacks were previously Nos. 20-49 but can now wear Nos. 0-49 and 80-89.Wide receivers and tight ends are now both allowed to wear Nos. 0-49 and 80-89. WWW.FOXNEWS.COMTrump 'dramatically' changes tune on Ukraine but experts caution Putin is still waiting for actionPresident Donald Trump this week shocked the international community when he said he flipped his position on the war in Ukraine and said he thinks Kyiv could re-take all of its occupied land seized by Russia. In a Tuesday comment on social media, he said, "I think Ukraine, withthesupport oftheEuropean Union, is in a position to fight and win all of Ukraine back in itsoriginalform.""With time, patience, andthefinancial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO,theoriginalbordersfromwherethiswarstarted, is very much an option," he added. "Why not?"This position is a stark reversal from where he stood when he first re-entered office and, in an infamous February Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told him he "[didnt] have the cards" to take on Russia, and repeatedly suggested Kyiv would need to make significant concessions to end the war.TRUMP AND ZELENSKYY SIGNAL STRONGER TIES AFTER UN MEETING: 'BETTER RELATIONS THAN BEFORE'"We're seeing that his approach to Russia's war on Ukraine has already changed dramatically," Yuriy Sak, former defense advisor to Zelenskyy, told Fox News Digital. "This change of his approach will hopefully translate into more unity in terms of the Western alliance and their support for Ukraine."The response to Trumps change in attitude was met with mixed responses from top security experts, with some viewing it as a positive shift, while others, like former CIA Moscow station chief Dan Hoffman, argued that words alone will have little effect on Russian President Vladimir Putin."For all the years I spent trying to see the world through the twisted KGB eyes of Vladimir Putinhe does not care about words," Hoffman said. "He thinks he can use them against us."We did not deter him from threatening Poland, Estonia, Copenhagen and Norway militarily the United States and NATO did not deter him. He did it," Hoffman continued, referring to airspace violations in which Russia deployed drones and fighter jets over NATO nations in incidents that have occurred since Trump re-entered the White House."He's trying to show that the United States doesn't have the throw-weight to deter Russia from threatening NATO members in Eastern Europe," the Russian security expert argued. "He wants to try to show Ukraine the United States doesn't have the ability to project power in that part of the world. To show Ukraine you don't want to rely on the United States, stop fighting, we're going to beat you anyways, we're going to tap you out that's where his strategy is."TRUMP MOCKS NATO ALLIES FOR 'FUNDING THE WAR AGAINST THEMSELVES' WITH RUSSIAN ENERGY PURCHASESRussia on Wednesday pushed back on Trumps comments and suggested he was "mistaken" in his assessment of how the war is progressing."The dynamics on the front lines speak for themselves," Kremlinspokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters.Russia has made few to no major advances on the front lines since early 2024. Though some small advances have been achieved this year, the front lines have remained largely frozen for the last 18 months.Hoffman argued that if the U.S. wants to see Ukraine make advances, it needs to lift all strike restrictions it has in place and immediately enforce secondary sanctions, rather than wait on Europe to simultaneously follow suit, as they will take months to take a toll on Russias war chest.Washington also should consider strong-arming NATO allies, including Germany to provide Ukraine with long-range strike missiles, and Denmark to close the Danish Strait to Russias shadow fleet, as well as get Trump allies, like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, to stop buying Russian oil. While Hoffman argued there is more to be done before Putin actually starts to re-evaluate his war operations in Ukraine, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovil akalien said the presidents position reversal was "very encouraging.""I completely agree with the statement that, definitely, Ukraine has a right and a chance, with our full support, to go back to regain its original borders, its internationally recognized borders," she told Fox News Digital. "Because why not?"Sakaliene echoed Hoffman and said Ukraine needs the proper support to fully counter Russia, and without more U.S. and NATO support, not only will Ukraine be unable to make advances on the battlefield, Russia will continue to threaten NATO increasing the risk of a massive international war.RUSSIA SHIFTS FROM TALK TO ACTION, TARGETING NATO HOMELAND AMID FEARS OF GLOBAL WAR"The only obstacle would be our fear our inability to defend the rules of the world that we live in," she said. "The recent series of incidents, both drone related in Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, and also related to the incursion into our air space by Russian fighter jets, demonstrate again and again that Russia is coloring outside the lines."It's going to continue [and] it's going to escalate, because they feel that they are unpunishable, because they feel that they are untouchable, and that means that they are happily challenging NATO as well," Sakaliene said. All three security experts agreed that the U.S.s role in countering Putin is "critical" and the argument that the U.S. should take a backseat to Europe weakens the united front necessary to stop Russia."The current world security architecture is built around the axis of the United States," Sakaliene said, arguing that the system shouldnt be exploited, but supported by Europes bolstering of its own military capabilities. "But that also means that the voice of the United States was and is still vital for certain decisions related to a security of a democratic world.""And that the United States voice is the one that Russia hears the loudest," she said.Trump on Tuesday suggested Ukraine should not only retake the land seized by Russia, but "maybe even go further than that."Sak pushed back on this and said Ukraine is viewing the situation through a "realistic" lens."We've never had the ambition to conquer Russian territory. We don't need it," Sak said. "We just want them out of our land."We understand that at this stage, even this objective is not possible to achieve through military means," he continued. "It will have to be a mixture of diplomatic means, and it probably will take a long time."Ultimately, Ukraine viewed Trumps comments not as a signal that the U.S. is going to take immediate action, but rather as a "confirmation" that Trump is now fully on board with backing Ukraine, and aligning itself with the NATO alliance."Standing shoulder to shoulder with the European partners of Ukrainethis alone represents a big threat to Russia," Sak argued. "They know it, and this, once again, sends them a message that this is an unwinnable war for them."Sooner or later, when we cripple their economy in a combination of sanctions plus the deep strike drones that we carry out on a daily basis, Russia will be in a position that, despite their willingness to fight this war and continue to cause these crimes of aggression, it will not just be able to do so purely for economic reasons," Sak added.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 10 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMVile lie: Trump official drills Squad member for anti-ICE post as attacks increaseTrump administration officials are criticizing Democrats and "Squad" member Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., for "habitual lies and demonization" of federal law enforcement officials and for pushing a story about ICE agents using a 5-year-old child as bait. The dispute comes as ICE faces a surge of violent attacks, including a shooting on Wednesday at an ICE field office in Dallas. On Tuesday, Omar shared a since-deleted news post on social media about the family of Guatemalan illegal immigrant, Edwards Hip Mejia, accusing ICE agents of using his autistic child as bait to arrest him in Massachusetts.A video obtained by Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra shows the girl sitting beside a law enforcement SUV, holding a bottle, while surrounded by several male officers outside her home in Leominster last Tuesday. NBC reported that the father, Edwards Hip Mejia, told his wife he believed he was being followed and drove home. Once there, he allegedly ran toward the parking lot, but agents "grabbed" their daughter, the wife told Telemundo.Omar reposted the article on X, commenting, "This is vile and beyond cruel. Abolish ICE."DHS REJECTS NBC REPORT CLAIMING ICE USED 5-YEAR-OLD AUTISTIC GIRL AS BAIT TO ARREST FATHERDepartment of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin called Omars statement "a vile lie" and the story a "disgusting smear."According to McLaughlin, "ICE agents NEVER used a 5-year-old girl as bait."She said Mejia "abandoned his 5-year-old daughter in the car" and that "officers helped rescue the child and called local police to report the abandonment."In response to Omars call to abolish ICE, McLaughlin said the Democrats "habitual lies and demonization of our law enforcement is whats cruel.""The criminal illegal alien target with previous arrests for domestic abuse and strangulation, among other charges ABANDONED his own child in a car," said McLaughlin. "The target, Edwards Hip Mejia, ignored law enforcement emergency lights to pull over and drove back to his house. He fled from the car, gave officers the double middle finger, and darted inside his house.""Disgusting smears like these peddled by the media are leading to a 1000% increase in assaults against our brave law enforcement," she added in another post.According to NBC Boston, local police recovered the girl when they arrived and returned her to her family. Mejia was ultimately detained two days later, his wife told Telemundo, and is being held in Plymouth, Massachusetts.KASH PATEL REACTS TO DALLAS ICE SHOOTING: 'IT HAS TO END'According to DHS, ICE agents are currently facing a 1,000% increase in assaults. On Wednesday, a gunman carrying rounds with anti-ICE messages opened fire on an ICE facility in Dallas, killing one detainee and injuring another. Sources familiar with the investigation identified the alleged attacker as Joshua Jahn, 29. Authorities said Jahn took his own life. The detainee who survived was hospitalized in critical condition.Jahn fired "indiscriminately" at the ICE building, as well as at a van in the sally port where the victims were shot, the Department of Homeland Security said. The three detainees were in an unmarked transport van when they were shot, before Jahn took his own life around 7 a.m., according to the sources.WHO IS JOSHUA JAHN, SHOOTER IN DEADLY DALLAS ICE FACILITY ATTACK?Following the shooting, McLaughlin posted on X, calling on people to pray for the victims of the attack and for an end to attacks on ICE personnel.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"Like everyone else, our ICE law enforcement officers just want to go home to their families at night," said McLaughlin. "They are fathers and mothers. Sons, and daughters, brothers and sisters. They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer.""The violence and dehumanization of these men and women must stop," she added.Fox News Digital reached out to Omar's office for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMDangerous spike in superbug infections surges across US as experts share cautionsHuman infections from drug-resistant bacteria are spiking in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has warned. The CDCs laboratory tests have shown that occurrences of a bacteria called NDM-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (NDM-CRE) have increased dramatically.NDM-CRE belongs to a broader category of bacteria called carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), which have shown to resist some of the most powerful antibiotics available.COMMON PAINKILLERS MAY FUEL DEADLY SUPERBUGS THAT RESIST ANTIBIOTICS, STUDY WARNS"NDM" refers to an enzyme called New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase, which is resistant to almost all antibiotics, according to the report. In 2020, NDM-CRE led to approximately 12,700 infections and 1,100 deaths in the U.S., the above source stated. The current spike could send those numbers surging even higher.NDM-CRE infections which can include urinary tract infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections and wound infections increased by more than 460% between 2019 and 2023, the CDC warned. As these infections are resistant to most antibiotics, they are very difficult to treat and can sometimes be fatal. NDM-CRE can also spread quickly throughout communities. It is also easily misdiagnosed or overlooked, the CDC noted, as it has not been common in the U.S. and may not be on healthcare providers radar."This sharp rise in NDM-CRE means we face a growing threat that limits our ability to treat some of the most serious bacterial infections," Danielle Rankin, an epidemiologist in CDC's Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, said in the CDCs press release."Selecting the right treatment has never been more complicated, so it is vitally important that healthcare providers have access to testing to help them select the proper targeted therapies."Infectious disease expert David Perlin, Ph.D., chief scientific officer and executive vice president at the Hackensack Meridian Center for Discovery and Innovation in New Jersey, was not involved in the CDCs study, but shared his reactions with Fox News Digital."This is one of the many drug resistance concerns right now for Americans especially since we are seeing that surveillance is not keeping up with the evolution of the pathogens," he said. "We can certainly do better, once we realize the stakes here."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERNDM-CRE infections are serious and can be life-threatening, Perlin confirmed."They're constantly adapting to their environment, and can acquire a range of drug resistance mechanisms that make them difficult to treat," he said."The fact that some of these strains carry special carbapenemase genes which enables the organism to resist treatment with the most common class of antibiotics makes them particularly dangerous to patients with compromised immune systems."Perlin recommends that patients are "persistent" in interacting with doctors about any nagging infections. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/health"Healthcare providers can, and must, do better to provide testing closer to the point of care, especially in emergency departments, so these infections can be identified rapidly for effective treatment and infection control," he added, warning that these infections can spread easily among hospital, nursing home and community settings.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMLuigi Mangione's lawyers cry foul over portrayal of him as 'left-wing' and AntifaLuigi Mangione's defense lawyers are crying foul to a judge about the Trump administration and Department of Justice over references to the accused assassin as left-wing and "anti-fascist."And they are accusing top government officials of violating Mangione's Fifth and Eighth Amendment rights to a fair trial by continuing to make statements about the case outside the courtroom. They took issue with a range of incidents, including a Fox News interview in which President Donald Trump alleged, "He shot someone in the back as clear as you're looking at me."In another, Mangione's lawyers wrote that "the White House Press Secretary referred to Mr. Mangione as a 'left-wing assassin,'" and that a different White House official called their client a "self-described so-called anti-fascist."TRUMP DEFENDS LABELING ANTIFA A 'TERRORIST ORGANIZATION' AS HE TARGETS LEFT-WING EXTREMISM"The Government has indelibly prejudiced Mr. Mangione by baselessly linking him to unrelated violent events and left-wing extremist groups, despite there being no connection or affiliation," wrote Karen Friedman Agnifilo, one of Mangione's top-tier defense lawyers. "A recent, tragic, high-profile murder has only increased this prejudicial rhetoric."She was likely referencing the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University Sept. 10. The suspect in that attack, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is accused of engraving his bullet casings with memes and Antifa-inspired language.Read the letter to the judge:On Wednesday morning, another gunman opened fire at the Dallas field office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, killing two people and injuring a third before fatally shooting himself.Authorities recovered bullets at the Dallas scene with the phrase "Anti-ICE" written on an unspent round.MANGIONE DEFENSE CLAIMS HIS 'BEAUTIFUL, PROMISING LIFE DERAILED' IN UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO MURDER CASEMangione allegedly wrote the words "deny," "delay" and "depose" on spent and unspent casings police recovered while investigating his case in what appears to be a reference to the title of a book that is critical of the U.S. health insurance industry. The defense is accusing the DOJ of violating the rules of criminal court that balance the First Amendment with the right to a fair trial. After receiving the defense letter, Judge Margaret Garnett gave the DOJ until Oct. 3 to respond with a sworn declaration "from a person of suitable authority" in the Southern District of New York to explain the incidents, which appear to have violated a prior court order from April in which the judge told prosecutors to abide by Local Criminal Rule 23.1 (a), which governs the balance between freedom of speech and a defendant's right to a fair trial.TRUMP ADMIN USES LUIGI MANGIONE CASE TO 'SEND A MESSAGE' IN FIRST 100 DAYS: FORMER FEDERAL PROSECUTORThe defense also claimed that the government, due to its possession of Mangione's journals, is aware that his writings don't mention Antifa ties."The Government very well knows this statement to be false as they are in possession of his alleged extensive journal writings where the writer never once mentions being anti- (or pro) fascist," the defense wrote.Mangione allegedly wrote critically about the health insurance industry and wanting to "whack" a CEO, authorities have said. He is also accused of wanting "to incite national debates.""The DOJ may have fanned the flames by portraying Luigi Mangione as a left-wing assassin," said Randolph Rice, an attorney and legal analyst based in the 27-year-old former Ivy Leaguer's home state of Maryland. "His lawyers have pushed back hard, noting theres nothing in his past or his writings to support that narrative."MANGIONE DEFENSE CLAIMS HIS 'BEAUTIFUL, PROMISING LIFE DERAILED' IN UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO MURDER CASEThe legal dogma is that prosecutors usually avoid extrajudicial statements so that they don't risk tainting the potential jury pool, Rice told Fox News Digital. But Mangione's case may have an extra level of danger if it continues to inspire shooters."The danger is that extremists may now view him as an inspiration, taking cues from his actions, like writing messages on bullets, to fuel their own twisted beliefs and commit violence for political purposes," Rice said. The assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024, appears to have inspired, at least partially, the subsequent attacks in Orem, Utah, and Dallas, Texas.Thompson, like Kirk, was a married father of two.AMERICANS CHEERING ACCUSED KILLERS SHOWS DANGEROUS 'DEHUMANIZATION' OF OPPONENTS, DOUGLAS MURRAY WARNS"Writing messages on bullets is significant because it reveals the shooters intent even before a single round is fired," Rice said. "For prosecutors, that kind of evidence is gold. It can demonstrate motive, premeditation and, in some cases, support additional charges, including hate crimes if the messaging targets a specific group."While the messages themselves may be evidence that prosecutors can use against shooters in court, Rice warned that copycats may increasingly be using murder to justify their political views."What were seeing in Dallas and in other recent cases is a disturbing trend radicalized individuals who arent just committing violence but trying to make a political or ideological statement through the very ammunition they use," Rice told Fox News Digital. "Thats not random. Its deliberate."Just about two weeks before Kirk's murder in Utah, a gunman who identified as transgender opened fire on schoolchildren at a Catholic church in Minneapolis. That attacker wrote messages on his guns and magazines in an apparent reference to two other mass shooters who opened fire at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMReporter's Notebook: Trump cancels meeting with Democrats as shutdown loomsThe Cincinnati Bengals missed the playoffs the past two seasons. They finished 9-8 both years, despite a loaded offense headed by quarterback Joe Burrow (when healthy).During the offseason, the Bengals refused to re-sign All-Pro defensive end Trey Hendrickson. He led the league in sacks last season with 17.5. The Bengals considered trading Hendrickson. They then grudgingly signed him to a year-long contract just before the first game.Cincinnati drafted defensive end Shemar Stewart of Texas A&M in the first round last spring. But then the Bengals and Stewart tussled over a contract.TIT FOR TAT: HOUSE CENSURES ARE BECOMING SNAP SOLUTIONSThe Bengals have been less parsimonious in recent years when doling out the dollars to top-flight players. But owner Mike Brown has a miserly reputation. And despite a talent-laden roster, the Bengals are peerless in mediocrity. They have never won the Super Bowl. That fuels a narrative about the franchise.Stewart summed up the Bengals when speaking to Sports Illustrated:"Yall just want to win arguments (more) than winning games," he declared."Arguments" and"games" are now afoot in Washington, D.C. over avoiding a government shutdown next week. The question is what counts as winning an "argument" and what constitutes prevailing in a "game." Both Republicans and Democrats can compete in both categories over the next few days. A government funding deadline looms at 11:59:59 p.m. ET Tuesday night. In fact, both sides might secure victories in the argument category. But marshaling a true title in the win column is an altogether different enterprise. Moreover, this tournaments rules dont dictate that one side emerges victorious and the other loses. In fact, both sides could execute losing campaigns.DEMOCRATS SKIP CHARLIE KIRK ARIZONA MEMORIAL AFTER 58 VOTE AGAINST HOUSE RESOLUTIONThat said, do the sides have more interest in echoing the Cincinnati Bengals and winning "arguments?" Or would they rather win "games" and avert a government shutdown."I dont have any meetings or any scheduling updates for you today," said White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt at the briefing early Monday afternoon. But there was a flicker of hope a few hours later.Word came that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would head to the White House on Thursday to meet with President Donald Trump. Neither leader has huddled with the president since he took office in January. But one wasnt quite sure what this session might accomplish."We want a clean funding extension to keep the government open. That's all we're advocating for," said Leavitt.Democrats pushed for something else. They advocated a renewal of subsidies to defray the cost of Obamacare. The price tag for health care coverage for millions of Americans is set to skyrocket early next year unless Congress intervenes. Democrats want to dial back other health care reductions which were part of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill - passed by Congress earlier this summer. Democrats also insist on assurances that the president wont claw back any money for programs already doled out by Congress. Finally, Democrats want the administration to reinstate dollars cut from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The House is out of session this week and prospectively until October 7 after passing a GOP-backed interim spending plan late last week. But House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., materialized at the Capitol early Tuesday morning.Johnson told Fox News he was skeptical that a meeting between President Trump, Schumer and Jeffries "is necessary." But the Speaker noted that he would attend the Oval Office conclave."Why would I not be there? This is the legislative branch communicating with the executive branch. If there is such a meeting with the leaders, then (Senate Majority Leader) John Thune, R-S.D., and I will certainly be a part of it," said Johnson. It was news that Johnson and Thune were set to be part of a meeting with the president on government funding. But it would have been news to Johnson that Trump nixed the meeting. Moments later, Trump posted a lengthy screed to Truth Social, scrubbing the session."I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive," he wrote. He argued that the Democratic request would provide "free healthcare for Illegal Aliens," along with government funded "Transgender surgery for minors." He also said the Democrats proposal would "allow men to play in womens sports, and essentially create Transgender operations for everybody."Its not clear where the provisions the president cited lie in the Democratic counteroffer. But the fact of the matter is that the government will shutter early next Wednesday morning unless the Senate can secure Democratic votes to overcome a filibuster. The House passed an interim bill renewing funding at current levels last week. Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, voted "yea."But the Senate is a different animal. Republicans only have 53 votes there. Sixty votes are necessary to crack a filibuster. So if Democrats dont accede to the GOP demands, theres a shutdown. And, by contrast, if Republicans refuse to grant Democrats their wishes, theres a shutdown.Avoiding a shutdown could qualify as winning "games." But were not certain if the sides are interested in that sweepstakes just yet."The statement that Donald Trump issued today was unhinged," said Jeffries, adding that "Trump always chickens out.""Today seems to be tantrum day for Donald Trump," said Schumer. "He just ain't up to it. He runs away before the negotiations even begin."Since the House greenlighted its interim bill, Johnson cut everyone loose cancelling scheduled session days next week when the House could at least be in a position to wrangle with any spending bill which comes over from the Senate. But Republicans are adamant that its the House bill or nothing."Youre not planning to bring the House back at any stage now?" I asked Johnson."The House is on district work period right now. We got our work done in the House. We got it done early with regard to the funding. People have a lot to do back in their districts. So were on the ready at any time. But the plan would be to come back when its necessary. But the current plan is to not have session days on September 29 and 30th," he said."Is that a bad look if the House is not here and the government shuts down despite what you did?" I countered."The government would not shut down until the earliest, October 1st," replied Johnson, slightly cracking open the door to a potential recall. "But if Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries decide to shut the government down, theyve created the problem."So, were less than a week before a possible government shutdown. Seemingly each September, just before the end of the fiscal year, the chances of a government shutdown are "high" and theres almost no way to avert a shutdown. Yet nearly each time, Democrats and Republicans, the House and Senate, figure out a way to stave off a shutdown at the last minute. In fact, that might be the case this time. But the calculus is different, with the House nowhere to be found, and the Senate left with just the House bill. Thats only exacerbated by a lack of negotiations. One can only imagine the arguments which may have emanated from the Oval Office had Trump huddled with Jeffries and Schumer this week. They may have viewed a televised meeting with the president as the perfect forum to skirmish. Democrats have struggled for months to demonstrate to their base that theyre "fighting." That said, Trump may have been ready for a tilt, ala his verbal combat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in February. And who can forget former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., storming out of a meeting with Trump during his first term?At this stage, everyone is trying to win arguments. Not games. And well truly know if they lost the game when the governments new fiscal year begins at 12:00:01 a.m. ET next Wednesday.0 Commenti 0 condivisioni 7 Views 0 Anteprima
