Las Vegas buffets dying out as 'Pawn Stars' boss touts barbecue, American steaks
For decades, Las Vegas buffets were a tourist jackpot. Today, food halls are a big draw.Even "Pawn Stars" boss Rick Harrison has noticed the evolution of people's eating habits, calling the buffet's decline an example of "Darwinism.""You know, 100 years ago, lobster was considered poor people's food, so everything has changed," Harrison told Fox News Digital in a video interview from his restaurant, Rick's Rollin Smoke Barbeque & Tavern.LAS VEGAS BUFFETS 'A DYING BREED' AS CASINOS PUSH 'YOUNGER AND COOLER' FOOD HALL OPTIONSThe once-famous buffetsin Vegas have given way to trendy Strip food halls in recent years. In 2020, Rio's Carnival World Buffet closed down before reopening as Canteen Food Hall in 2024.ARIA Buffet also shuttered in 2020, reopening as Proper Eats Food Hall in 2022.The Big Top Food Court at Circus Circus, which opened in 2021, replaced a small portion of the venue's buffet.Despite the changes, the menu at Harrison's restaurant leans on barbecue tradition the kind that takes 16 hours in a smoker.PRICED OUT IN LAS VEGAS? 5 COSTLY STEAKS THAT CAN CUT INTO TOURISTS' WALLETS"We don't cut the time," Harrison saidl. "It's not 15-and-a-half hours. It's not 15 hours and 45 minutes. It's 16 hours, every bit of it."Harrison said all the meat at his restaurant is locally sourced."We're kind of known for our burnt ends," he added. "For people who don't know what the burnt ends [are], that's the fatty side of the brisket."Harrison said he was born and raised in North Carolina, which he called "mostly the barbecue capital of the world."WHY SOME STEAKHOUSES ARE THRIVING WHILE OTHERS CAN'T KEEP DINERS COMING BACK: 'NOT JUST ABOUT THE FOOD'His restaurant, which is next to the pawn shop, receives thousands of visitors every day, he said."People from overseas don't know about American barbecue, and when they find out about it, they absolutely love it," Harrison said. With tourism numbers down in Vegas, many people have pointed to the expensive pricing, especially when it comes to food.On that point, Harrison called the $1,000 steak "the most ridiculous thing in the world."MORE FROM FOX NEWS LIFESTYLE"I wouldn't fall for the gimmicks," he said, noting there are still places to eat "a good ol' American steak" for $50 to $80.TheLas VegasConvention and Visitors Authority recently released its numbers for July visitors, noting a 12% drop from last year. There were 3,089,300visitors in Julycompared to over 3.5 million last year, while occupancy on the Strip dropped 7% from 86.5% in 2024.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERHarrison attributed the decrease to "people skipping vacations" due to inflation. The great thing about Vegas, he said, is the variety of food offerings."You have everything from a food court to five-star restaurants," Harrison said."So, it's a little bit of everything here. Alabama conducts first state-federal checkpoint operations with ICE, detaining over 20 people
In what is reportedly one of the first instances of "checkpoint" operations between the Department of Homeland Security and a state police agency, more than two dozen people were detained within the past several days.Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey confirmed to Fox News Digital that she directed the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and other cabinet agencies to "work closely with ICE to catch criminal illegals."Ivey praised ALEAs work on a particularly lucrative "bust" in Russellville, which saw at least 20 people detained. In a statement to Fox News Digital, ALEA confirmed that operation in which agency troopers conducted drivers' license checkpoints in Franklin and Colbert counties, where ICE special agents were present.GOP GOVERNOR GREENLIGHTS STATE TROOPERS TO JOIN ICE IN IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWNMore than one-third of area residents identify as Hispanic, according to census figures, which eclipses the statewide proportion of 6%.ALEA directed Fox News Digital to ICE for immigration-specific data from its collaboration."Driver license checkpoints occur all over the state and are one of the ways we stop criminals in their tracks, and now, we include ICE agents in these efforts," Ivey said. The Republican, who is term-limited next year, added that criminal illegal immigrants are not welcome in her state, and that every "tool in the toolbox" will be used to keep residents and visitors safe.Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., who is hoping to shift from Washington to Montgomery and succeed Ivey next year, said he was glad to see ALEA work with ICE in this way.ALABAMA GOV SIGNS WHAT IS A WOMAN ACT: 'IF THE GOOD LORD MADE YOU A BOY, YOU'RE A BOY'"When 77 million Americans voted for President Trump, they sent a clear message: they want mass deportations and they want them now," Tuberville told Fox News Digital. The longtime Auburn football icon expressed hope that other states will follow Alabamas lead and adapt such new cooperative strategies with federal law enforcement to crack down on illegal immigrants and maintain public safety."[Illegal immigrant] criminals shouldnt be here in the first place," Tuberville said.Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter also indicated his support for Iveys and ALEAs work.Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, lamented that there are too many other states where leaders "fight harder for criminals than [for] law-abiding citizens."In those places, he said, "politics matter more to [elected officials] than public safety I expect this state and federal partnership to continue yielding positive results."Birmingham immigration attorney Brett Pouncey told statewide news outlet AL.com that numerous communities are also working with ICE to set up license-checking "roadblocks" citing reports from his own clients.Russellville community organizer Evelyn Servin told the outlet that police should not be working with the feds, and claimed people in her area may be racially profiled and detained.Throughout the summer, ICE also made two dozen arrests in Baldwin County, home of the famed white-sand "Redneck Riviera" beach towns.Arrests were made at sites in Loxley along Interstate 10 north of Orange Beach and Spanish Fort, which lies on the other end of the George Wallace Tunnel from Mobile. The operations led one immigration advocate in that region to suggest immigrants write phone numbers on their bodies to be able to contact family in case they are detained by ICE, according to AL.com.Fox News Digital reached out to DHS for further comment and data.

Teen who sacrificed his life stopping school shooter could be declared a saint by Catholic Church
DENVER - A Colorado teenager who died tackling a school shooter to save his classmates is now being considered for sainthood a move parishioners say reflects his extraordinary courage and faith.Kendrick Castillo, 18, was killed on May 7, 2019, when he charged one of the gunmen who opened fire at STEM School Highlands Ranch, just days before graduation. His selfless act allowed classmates to subdue the attackers and prevented what could have been a much larger tragedy."You cannot overstate the heroism of Kendrick Castillo," George Brauchler, who prosecuted the case, told Fox News Digital. "And on that particular day, if you said in classroom 107, who's going to be your hero that averts a mass murder? I don't know if he's in the top half. I just think that people would have written him off as not that guy, but he turns out to be that guy."The shooting erupted inside a British literature class that had gathered to watch "The Princess Bride" as an end-of-year reward. Two assailants, Devon Erickson, then 18, and accomplice Alec McKinney, then 16, carried out the attack.MINNEAPOLIS CHURCH SHOOTING AUDIO CAPTURES FIRST RESPONDERS RUSHING TO CHAOTIC SCENE IN DEADLY ATTACKDuring the shooting, Castillo and fellow students Joshua Jones and Brendan Bialy rushed Erickson. After firing four shots, Ericksons weapon jammed.Castillo was fatally shot in the struggle, but his actions gave classmates the chance to disarm the attackers. He was the only student killed, while eight others were injured.Brauchler, who also prosecuted the Columbine High School and Aurora theater shooting, described Castillo as "a miracle baby" and the only child to his parents, John and Maria Castillo."They renamed the street near the school Kendrick Castillo Way," Brauchler said. "And now hes cleared the first hurdle toward canonization in the Catholic Church he loved so much. Its really an incredible story."WHAT LEADS SOMEONE TO COMMIT A MASS SHOOTING? TRUMP ADMIN, RFK JR PLAN TO FIND OUTErickson was later convicted on 46 counts, including first-degree murder, and faces life in prison without parole. McKinney, who testified against him, pleaded guilty and could be eligible for parole after about 20 years, according to the Associated Press. After the verdict, Kendricks father, John Castillo, said he felt his sons presence guiding the jury. "Im sure he was looking down today," he told the outlet. "This day was justice for him."Former student Mitchell Kraus, who was wounded in the attack, recalled walking Erickson to the nurses office just minutes before the shooting began. "He never gave any indication something was about to happen," Kraus said. Now in college, Kraus said he feels closure knowing Erickson will never walk free again."Now that I can be sure that this monster, to be honest, is never going to see the light of day again, its just a weight off my back," he said.GRIEVING FATHER CALLS MINNEAPOLIS SHOOTER A 'COWARD' WHO TOOK LIFE OF HIS 8-YEAR-OLD SON FLETCHER DURING MASSThe Diocese of Colorado Springs, which oversees the area where the tragedy occurred, has formally received a petition to open Kendricks cause for canonization, the National Catholic Register reported.Although Kendrick had deep ties to the Archdiocese of Denver, Church law designates the diocese where a person died to initiate the canonization cause. Since his death occurred in Highlands Ranch, the responsibility falls to the Colorado Springs Diocese.Father Patrick DiLoreto of St. Mark Parish in Highlands Ranch said Castillos sacrifice may qualify under Pope Francis "Offering of Life" category recognizing those who give their lives for love of God and neighbor, even outside of traditional martyrdom definitions."He [Castillo] courageously threw himself at one of the school shooters without hesitation, allowing other students to follow and subdue the gunman," DiLoreto explained. "This saved the lives of his fellow classmates when, in any other circumstance, there would surely have been more deaths on that day."Castillos devotion was well known in his parish. He carried a rosary daily, one of which was found on him after his death and later gifted to a classmate, the Register reported. He volunteered regularly, attended funerals of strangers to pray for them, and openly spoke of wanting to be a witness of faith.Bishop James Golka of Colorado Springs praised those who gathered testimony about Kendricks life. "It seems clear that Kendrick was an exceptional young man," he said.As America continues to face tragic acts of school violence, parishioners and leaders alike see Castillos example as a source of strength."As the country faces more and more persecution of Christians, especially in these horrific school shootings, such as the one last week in Minnesota, we can look at the heroic examples such as Kendrick and the children who protected others for inspiration," Father DiLoreto finished. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze rips officials as SEC admits they gave illegal touchdown to Oklahoma
Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze wasnt happy with the officiating in his teams loss to Oklahoma on Sunday, and the SEC admitted a crucial touchdown shouldnt have counted. The Sooners won 24-17 over the Tigers, thanks in part to trickery on an Isaiah Sategna III wide-open touchdown. The conference later ruled the play illegal, saying it should have been called for unsportsmanlike conduct. The second-quarter play appeared to show Sategna running toward the sideline for a substitution, but he stopped near the boundary. Auburns defense believed he was out of the game until the ball was snapped and immediately thrown to him for an easy touchdown.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMDuring his postgame interview, Freeze acknowledged he had to "better be quiet," or risk a hefty fine for criticizing officials. But ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin called the play illegal after reviewing it on the broadcast, and Freeze agreed after the game.Freeze told reporters he had warned his staff "all offseason" that such plays were deemed illegal and shouldnt be run. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, however, described it as a "tempo play" rather than a deception, claiming Sategna checked in with an official before the snap.LSU, FLORIDA PLAYERS STEAMROLL COACH BRIAN KELLY ON SIDELINESThe SEC sided with Auburn in its ruling, citing "NCAA football Rule 9-2, Article 2," labeled "unfair tactics.""No simulated replacements or substitutions may be used to confuse opponents. No tactic associated with substitutes or the substitution process may be used to confuse opponents. This includes any hideout tactic with or without a substitution," the SEC said in a statement."The officiating crew did not properly interpret the action as a hideout tactic. If properly officiated, the second-down play should have resulted in a team unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of 15 yards assessed from the previous spot."Freeze was also frustrated with another play involving Sategna. Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee appeared to pick up a fumble and return it for a touchdown. Auburn believed Sategna had caught the pass before losing control, but after review, officials ruled it incomplete."I dont know how its not a fumble," Freeze said. "I dont know. Maybe they had a different review up top. Looked like he juggled at first, regained, and ran. We stripped it. Thought it should have been a touchdown."Unfortunately for the Tigers, both calls went against them, and losing by just a touchdown made the outcome sting even more.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Jordon Hudson's sideline talk fails to save Bill Belichick as UNC suffers crushing defeat to UCF
Jordon Hudson may have given her boyfriend, North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick, a pep talk before his game against UCF, but it didnt work out for the Tar Heels on Saturday in Central Florida. The Tar Heels were blown out 34-9 as UCF dominated on its home turf, dropping North Carolina to 2-2 in Belichicks inaugural college football coaching campaign. Before the game, Hudson was spotted talking to Belichick on the sideline, which has become a common occurrence since his debut at North Carolina in another blowout loss to TCU earlier this season.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMIts unclear what Hudson, 24, and Belichick, 73, were discussing on the field, but video captured Hudson whispering in Belichicks ear before kickoff."First of all, he did a great job with UCF today," Belichick said of coach Scott Frost after the loss. "Their team played well, certainly better than we did. There were too many problems out there to be consistent."The Tar Heels allowed 13 unanswered points to start the game, putting them in an early hole. They managed a field goal late in the second quarter, but the damage was already done as UCF extended the lead after that.TCU PLAYER TAUNTS BILL BELICHICK, JORDON HUDSON AFTER COACH'S UNC DEBUT LOSS: 'GOTTA CALL HIS GIRLFRIEND'"There are a lot of things that we need to do a better job of, and they were just better than us today," Belichick added.Gio Lopez, Belichicks quarterback, threw for only 87 yards with two interceptions before suffering a right leg injury in the third quarter that knocked him out of the game. This was Belichicks first loss since his debut against the Horned Frogs. North Carolina turned the tide with a 20-3 win over Charlotte and blew out Richmond 41-6 last week to reach 2-1 entering Saturday.Hudson has been a regular presence on the sideline before games despite some disagreeing with it when she was spotted before the TCU game. Her name was even mentioned by TCU player Bud Clark, who went viral after commenting on Instagram Live following the 48-14 rout."Belichick gotta call for his girlfriend," Clark, who had a pick-six in the win, was heard saying in a clip. "He sad."Hudson and Belichick created the wrong type of stir leading up to the 74-year-old coachs debut, most notably with a controversial "CBS Sunday Morning" interview.Hudson said, "Were not talking about that," when Belichick was asked how the couple met. Emails obtained by WRAL show Belichick addressing the controversy over his romantic and professional relationship with Hudson, where he claimed CBS "secretly" had a camera focused on her despite her request to sit off camera."I met Jordon randomly on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021. That is no secret," Belichick wrote in another email. "Jordon was not dodging the specific question regarding how we met, but rather was preventing the interview from continuing to probe into personal matters."Hudson also handles Belichicks off-the-field career opportunities, and since the relationship began, it has been the punchline of jokes at award shows as well as a storyline in the national sports media.North Carolina football general manager Michael Lombardi insisted that Belichicks relationship with Hudson isnt a distraction for the program."I mean, a lot of it is just noise," he told ESPN Radios "Marty & McGee" in June. "And for us to be distracted by something that has no bearing, that has no relevance whatsoever, that is a complete falsehood, in terms of what people are saying or what theyre writing. Its comical. And, for me, to really even attack anybody whos saying it, gives them credibility. Which I dont, because its a completely false narrative."Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

NFL hits Eagles' Saquon Barkley with $46K fine for dangerous helmet violation vs Chiefs
Before the Philadelphia Eagles played the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, star running back Saquon Barkley had to pay up.The NFL fined Barkley, the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year, $46,371 for lowering his helmet into a Kansas City Chiefs player during the Eagles Week 2 road win.The play came on a long run, when Barkley lowered the crown of his helmet and led with it into defensive back Chamarri Conner. The league almost always deems that unnecessary roughness, and as it tries to eliminate helmet-first contact, a fine usually follows.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMNo flag was thrown on the play, but after review, the league announced the fine before the Week 3 kickoff. The dollar amount stems from Barkley committing a similar violation last season. Under NFL rules, $46,371 is the penalty for a second offense.Barkley was not the only star fined in this Super Bowl LIX rematch. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was docked $14,491 for making an obscene gesture after a big catch.Kelce hauled in a 23-yard reception while stiff-arming Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean. To celebrate, he grabbed his crotch a "huevos" homage to the movie "Major League." The league didnt care about the pop culture reference and issued a fine.Like Barkley, Kelce wasnt flagged during the game.Officiating controversies were a theme that day, especially on Philadelphias short-yardage plays. The most notable came on the teams signature tush push play in the fourth quarter. Replays appeared to show multiple Eagles linemen moving before the snap, indicating a false start. No flag was thrown, and the play set up the game-winning touchdown. The NFL later admitted officials missed the call, saying a flag should have been thrown. As a result, Week 3 is expected to feature tighter officiating on the tush push during FOXs "Americas Game of the Week" between the Eagles and Rams.Barkley will try to torch the Rams defense again after his inaugural Eagles campaign in 2024, when he ran for 255 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns. He also caught four passes from Jalen Hurts that day for 47 yards.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X, and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
