Rabies infections are increasing in wild animals should you worry?
Morewild animals are getting infected with rabies, which poses a public health threat, officials warn.Around75% of Americans are exposed to raccoons, skunks and foxes the very wildlife that commonly spread the fatal disease to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The latest report from the CDCsNational Rabies Surveillance System, which monitors rabies trends in the U.S., found that wildlife cases increased 5% in 2023 over the prior year.ORGAN TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT DIES OF RABIES AFTER SURGERY"Currently, the CDC Rabies Program is tracking 15 rabies outbreak events," Paul Prince, a CDC spokesperson, told Fox News Digital. "There are likely many more rabies outbreaks across the U.S., but these are managed at the local or state level."Nassau County in New York declared an imminent public health alert this summer afterconfirming 22 cases this year compared to just six last year a more than three-fold increase."These cases reflect a troubling resurgence of terrestrial rabies, which had been successfully eliminated from Nassau County after 2016 through coordinated intervention efforts," Alyssa Zohrabian, director of the Office of Communications of Nassau County Department of Health, told Fox News Digital.Rabies is avirus that is transmitted to humans by a bite or scratch from a rabid animal, according to the CDC.It can sometimes take weeks or months to reach a diagnosis, because the infection only causes symptoms after it travels to thebrain and spinal cord.SILENT KILLER PARASITIC DISEASE SPREADING ACROSS MULTIPLE US STATES, EXPERTS WARNSevere disease, however, often presents within two weeks of illness, causing confusion, agitation and hallucinations, the above source states.People may initially feel like they have the flu, complaining of a fever, headache or weakness. Another clue is pain or numbness at the site of the bite."Classic rabies" causes someone to feel very thirsty, while paradoxically feeling a sense of panic at the sight of fluids. Someone may also produce lots of saliva and exhibit aggressive behavior.Rabies is almost always fatal after symptoms but it is also nearly 100% preventable. After a rabies exposure, people should seek immediate preventative medical care, known as post-exposure prophylaxis, which involves thoroughly cleaning the wound and receiving a rabies vaccination.People can also receive neutralizing antibodies to fight the infection, experts advise."The CDC, at least in part, attributes this to human translocation of animals into areas where rabies had not been or was in very low incidence," Dr. Edward R. Rensimer, a specialist in infectious diseases with expertise in rabies prevention, told Fox News Digital."This has prompted an increase in some states in allocation of funds for rabies vaccine bait placement for wildlife," added Rensimer, who is also the director of the International Medicine Center in Houston, Texas.FLESH-EATING PARASITE CASE DETECTED IN US TRAVELER RETURNING FROM CENTRAL AMERICAThe Nassau County Department of Healthlaunched the first phase of its reinstituted oral rabies vaccine baiting program in fall 2024, with a second round in spring and a third planned for this fall."When there are cutbacks in animal control and prevention of rabies efforts, invariably that can lead to increased incidence of rabies in wild animals, with the tragic potential [for] cases in humans," Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital on Long Island, New York, told Fox News Digital."Fortunately, there are only a handful ofhuman rabies cases reported annually, and there is an effective vaccine that can be given to patients after an at-risk animal bite."Six people have died from rabies in the U.S. over the last year, with two of those deaths in 2025, the CDC spokesperson told Fox News Digital."Recent cases likely do not indicate a national human rabies outbreak, but a reminder that rabies is still a public health threat in the U.S. and abroad," he added. More than 90% of reported cases of rabies in animals are from wild animals most frequently bats, according to the CDC.Depending on where they live, Americans are also at risk of exposure to other wildlife."There are over 30 different rabies viruses in the U.S., all associated with wildlife," the CDC spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "Each of these viral variants has a unique animal species and geographic range, and can have its own specific outbreaks."Those who live in the eastern U.S. have some of the highest risks of being exposed to rabies from raccoons in the area.Skunks pose a high risk for rabies in theMidwest and Western U.S., and foxes present a danger for people who live in the Southwestern part of the country as well as Alaska, per the CDC.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERRabies in skunks increased in Kentucky in 2024 to 2025, and there were rabies outbreaks among foxes in Arizona and California in 2023, Rensimer added.Rabies is present in wildlife in all states except Hawaii, according to the CDC spokesperson.Only a small percentage of rabies cases in the U.S. affectdomestic animals, such as dogs and cats, according to experts but its not outside the realm of possibility."Pets that mostly stay inside a home may seem like they are at low risk to get rabies, but rabid wildlife can get into our homes and backyards even if we dont see them," the CDC spokesperson cautioned."Our pets are more likely than us to interact with wildlife, and they are often unable to tell us when theyve been exposed."A stray puppy and two stray cats tested positive for rabies in Philadelphiathis year,James Garrow, communications director for thePhiladelphia Department of Public Health, told Fox News Digital. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/healthIt is important to keep pets up to date on vaccinations both to protect their health and to prevent transmission to humans, experts agree.Nassau County Department of Health, in partnership with the Town of Oyster Bay, is offering free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets to all county residents on Saturday, Sept. 13."The best way to avoid rabies is to stay away from wildlife," Glatt reiterated.

CBS News leans on reporting produced by outside climate change group
CBS News has leaned on content from a climate change group produced by former network staffers. In recent weeks, CBS News has disclosed in both on-air and online reports its coordination with Climate Central, a nonprofit that calls itself a "policy-neutral" and "independent group of scientists and communicators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects peoples lives."CBS News has cited Climate Central research dozens of times since 2021, according to Grabien transcripts. But it wasn't until July that the network began consistently referring to "our partners at Climate Central" on air.EMBATTLED CBS NEWS STAFFERS EXPRESS CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM OVER NEW PARAMOUNT CEO AFTER TUMULTUOUS YEARLast month, CBS News published a story about melting glaciers that also aired on "Sunday Morning." Ben Tracy was the correspondent on the segment, with his byline at the top of the article. A disclaimer at the bottom read, "Story produced by Chris Spinder, in partnership with Climate Central. Editor: Chris Jolly."Another CBS News article in July, also tied to an on-air segment with Tracy, included the disclaimer that the story was "produced in partnership with Climate Central."Tracy and Spinder don't work for CBS News, at least not anymore. They work for Climate Central. Only Jolly is a current CBS News staffer, according to his LinkedIn page.PARAMOUNT, SKYDANCE COMPLETE $8 BILLION MERGER AS FCC CONTINUES CBS PROBEClimate Central's website promotes its "Partnership Journalism" program, which it says "contributes data, science and data reporting, editing and guidance to joint features coverage informed by new climate data" to other outlets."A partner outlet contributes local reporting, including field reporting, photography and some editing for a story. We contribute data and charts plus a science reporter and an editor," Climate Central states. "For a text story, we help craft a feature in a way that puts climate change in appropriate and accurate context. For broadcast media, we provide story and interview suggestions and help develop and review scripts. Climate Centrals researchers assist with fact-checking."SKYDANCE INFORMS TRUMPS FCC IT WILL ELIMINATE DEI AT PARAMOUNT, CREATE CBS NEWS OMBUDSMAN FOLLOWING MERGEROutlining how it gets credited, Climate Central says, "We share bylines with print partners and ask broadcast partners to mention our partnership in their coverage." It also says, "There is no charge to the authors or their institutions and the work is explanatory, not promotional."Tracy, CBS News former senior national and environmental correspondent, left the network in September 2024. On his Instagram page, he now calls himself a "Climate Journalist on assignment for Climate Central.""For Climate Central, I'm Ben Tracy," he says to viewers at the end of his on-air reports.Spinder, a longtime producer for CBS News, left the network in May and immediately joined Climate Central as a senior producer, according to his LinkedIn page."I produce network-quality, broadcast-standard feature news stories focusing on climate and environmental topics and distribute them to 200+ stations across the United States," Spinder writes on his Linkedin profile. "We operate in conjunction with the independent, nonprofit, non-partisan science-based platform Climate Central and adhere to the highest level of journalistic standards that we've practiced for decades working inside traditional network news operations including CBS Network News."FCC APPROVES PARAMOUNT-SKYDANCE MERGER FOLLOWING TRUMP SETTLEMENT, COLBERT CANCELLATIONClimate Central's site links to articles from local news outlets it has partnered with. Shari Bell, the group's vice president for content creation, told Fox News Digital that Climate Central "works with many news organizations." When asked which other national outlets have used its produced content, like CBS News, Bell cited The Weather Channel and Scripps News.Bell confirmed Tracy and Spinder began working for Climate Central earlier this year but refrained from elaborating on what goes into the editorial process in its collaboration with CBS News.Climate Central describes itself as a "nonadvocacy organization" that "communicates climate change science, effects, and solutions to the public and decision-makers. Among its stated values: "We advance no specific policy, legislation, or technology to address climate change. We are scrupulously non-advocacy and non-partisan."The organization emphasizes "equity," writing, "We are committed to investigating and communicating the unequal burdens of climate change and to engaging with affected communities," a sentiment echoed in its "Fairness statement.""Climate change is an engine of inequity. Around the world, socially and economically disadvantaged groups that have barely contributed to the problem often face its gravest threats and impacts," the group states. "In turn, these impacts magnify the inequalities that precede them, as the most-affected populations commonly have the fewest resources to prepare, respond, or recover. In the United States, historically marginalized groups at special risk include Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities."PARAMOUNT, CBS FORCED TO PAY EIGHT FIGURES, CHANGE EDITORIAL POLICY IN SETTLEMENT WITH PRESIDENT TRUMPIt adds, "Climate Central regularly highlights the fundamental inequities of climate change. We reaffirm our commitment to investigate and publicize the unequal burdens of climate change, and to increase our efforts in this area. We also reaffirm our commitment to engage with affected communities in developing and disseminating our materials, and to increase our efforts to feature experts from diverse backgrounds."The website also includes a "Picturing Our Future" page featuring interactive split images showing world landmarks underwater if "we keep our current carbon path" towards global warming. After Fox News Digital asked CBS News for comment, the network scrubbed the "partnership" language in its disclaimer from one of the articles, which now reads, "This story was provided by Climate Central," and also removed Tracy's byline. A spokesperson for CBS News declined to comment.

Travis Kelce gets playful payback on Patrick Mahomes with spot-on impersonation at Brazil press conference
Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce found the perfect moment to get his teammate, Patrick Mahomes, back for something he said before their season kicked off in Brazil on Friday night.Mahomes and Kelce met with media members in So Paulo, Brazil on Thursday, one day before facing the Los Angeles Chargers to begin their 2025 campaign, and it was business as usual at the presser with Mahomes answering a question about the teams preparation heading to South America to play."Weve had a plan for this all summer long, and now were just ready to play football again," Mahomes responded to his question.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThen, Kelce was asked about all the Chiefs fandom that was seen in the So Paulo streets, and his response had everyone in the room cackling. He was impersonating Mahomes raspy voice."Oh man, it was crazy. It was a lot of fun seeing all the fans there," Kelce said, as the crowd laughed.TRAVIS KELCE SPEAKS PUBLICLY FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE ANNOUNCING ENGAGEMENT TO TAYLOR SWIFT"Chill out!" Mahomes said, laughing.Kelce quickly flipped back to his own voice, explaining why he decided to take a little jab at his teammate and best friend."He had that one coming for telling everybody I didnt know where Brazil was on the map," Kelce said. "Its an exciting time. You get to hang around the guys and the team. This is something that well all remember."The NFL regular season is a true grind, which these two Chiefs know a lot about. Thats why its always good to be in high spirits, and sometimes that means snapping off a joke here and there.Kansas City, though, is looking to start off on the right foot in Brazil, going against a tough AFC West rival in the Chargers, led by second-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. The last time the Chiefs were on a football field was against the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, and it didnt end how they wanted it to. They fell short of making NFL history as the first team to ever win three straight Super Bowls, but the confidence surrounding Kansas City hasnt wavered despite the result. So, while teammates are cracking jokes at one another, Kelce and Mahomes know work needs to be done on Friday night to ensure a 1-0 start to the season against a formidable opponent. Their baby girl was born a week early, earning a unique nickname and people are "lovin' it."Alyce Rotunda, 32, was expecting her fourth child in late August and had already been sent home from the hospital once, on Aug. 8, with what doctors called a "false alarm." But three days later, on her birthday, contractions returned and didn't stop.Late that night, Rotunda called her mother to watch her three children Genesis, 7, Kevin III, 4, and Boone, 2. The new baby was initially scheduled for an induction the following week, just as Rotunda's other three children had been.Paramedics arrived about 10 minutes after the delivery and took the family to the hospital for evaluation."I am just so incredibly thankful and blessed that there were no complications for the baby or for me, and the whole experience is wild, but I'm just very thankful," she said. "I wanted her on my birthday, but she decided to wait three hours, and she gave me a story regardless."Matilda's memorable entrance quickly earned her a nickname. LA comedian calls Newsom an 'empty suit' that allowed the city to be burned down
Comedian Tim Dillon slammed California Gov. Gavin Newsoms (D) record during a sit-down with podcast host Joe Rogan, warning that the governor is using a slick PR push to distract from failed policies."He is now positioning himself to be the Democratic presidential nominee. He's always been, but now he's really doing it. And to his credit, he's having success," Dillon said on Thursday's The Joe Rogan Experience.Rogan agreed, "Well, you know, some of the success that they're hanging their hat on is his social media campaign where he talks like Trump," suggesting the new campaign strategy to elevate Newsoms image is "f---ing terrifying."Newsom has launched a media blitz, with his social media presence mimicking President Donald Trump's style. These moves are seen by some as a signal that Newsom plans to run for president in 2028.DONNA BRAZILE DISMISSES GAVIN NEWSOM'S TRUMP TROLLING ON SOCIAL MEDIA, SAYS 'THESE ARE SERIOUS TIMES'"What he has is a terrible record in California, and hes done terrible things to peoples real lives, but hes succeeding on the internet," Dillon said. He did a post on X that was fun, and it doesn't matter that they let all the criminals out in California and burned everyone's house, you know?""Yeah," Rogan replied, "That's how bad the Democratic Party is right now"JOE ROGAN CONFRONTS GAVIN NEWSOM WITH 'TOUGH' QUESTIONS ON PANDEMIC RECORDCLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURE"And he's not even the worst of them," Dillon continued. "He's bad, but the people go so much further than him. The problem with Gavin Newsom is that he's kind of an empty suit," arguing the governor will strategically go whichever way the wind blows. He cited a test case in 2020, when Newsom "threw his own police force under the bus," then later repositioned himself as a "sensible Democrat that wants to reach out to conservatives." Dillon added, "He's like the hollow man. He just wants to win, and that might be enough."Fox News Digital reached out to Gov. Gavin Newsom's office and did not receive an immediate reply.

John Rich turns Tennessee farmers' fight into protest song as Trump backs his battle
John Rich is grateful for the current administrations help. The country singer told Fox News Digital about his battle with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which inspired his new single, "The Devil & the TVA."The 51-year-old explained that the TVA was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and it only answers to the president, "so senators, congressmen, governors, mayors, and definitely the general public has no sway over the TVA at all."He said theres a long history of the TVA allegedly coming into "communities and towns and just ransacking these places eminent domain, taking everybody's land and building these monstrous projects. And so this started happening in my home county of Cheatham County, Tennessee."JOHN RICH SAYS HOLLYWOODS PRAISE OF TRUMP PROVES WOKE MONSTER IS FADING AS WOODY ALLEN APPLAUDS PRESIDENTAccording to Rich, the TVA allegedly has a task force that tells homeowners, "Hey, we're coming on your land whether you like it or not, which steps all over the Fourth Amendment and a lot of other rights that Americans have. And so, when I learned that's what they were doing, and I actually saw a video of that exact thing happening to an 88-year-old woman in Cheatham County, that's when I decided to enter this fight."The Tennessee Valley Authority is a federally owned corporation that manages flood control, electric power, economic development and conservation.Last fall, the TVA told FOX 17 in a statement: "TVA filed condemnation proceedings related to potential transmission lines that TVA may locate on these properties, and the Federal Judge overseeing the cases issued Orders of Possession. These orders immediately authorize TVA to enter the properties for the purpose of conducting surveys. The landowners' objections do not bar TVA's authorization to access the properties pursuant to the courts orders, nor does authorization hinge on further activity in the lawsuits."In July, the public utility said Cheatham County is no longer the preferred site for its natural gas power plant.Fox News Digital has reached out to the TVA and to the White House for comment."I think one great thing about this particular Trump administration is they are paying attention," he continued. "They are listening to voters. They are following what's happening in the news, even on social media And if they see something really bad going down, they engage."As an example, he said when he told Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins the TVA was planning to tear up 6,000 acres of farmland in the county, she was shocked."She goes, Yeah, I don't think so. And that's my jurisdiction, farming, agriculture. And so, she stepped in, good for her, she's a hero," he said. "I mean, she helped save almost 500 houses, five school districts in less than five miles from this plant, the main water source for two towns in that County with a 900-megawatt methane gas plant with 10 acres of lithium battery storage.Literally, I mean, you might as well drop a bomb on that county."Fox News Digital has reached out to Rollins for comment.LIKE WHAT YOURE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSRich said Rollins had been alerted to the problem after he started posting interviews with residents who had been affected by the TVA, which started getting clicks on his YouTube channel, and eventually the attention of the president."And that's when we actually had a fighting chance to push TVA out," he added.Rich said that because of the administrations intervention, the residents of his country are celebrating and literally plan to have a parade."They had given up hope. They're like There's no way you beat the TVA," he explained, adding that the TVA had allegedly sued more than 100 families because they wouldnt allow them on their property. But its a low-income county and only around half of the residents in the county could even afford attorneys.""I mean, does that sound like America to you?" he asked. "Does that sound like anything our country was founded on? It doesn't to me. And again, that's why I decided to engage."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERRich said his new single is about "People power -- we the people power is an actual thing."He wants low- and middle-income people to know its possible to go up against a multi-billion-dollar entity and win.Going back to the Trump administration, Rich said he doesnt know how anyone could have made more progress than Trump in his first eight months."And again, I think a lot of that is due to the engagement level of his cabinet, of Trump himself and of his Cabinet," Rich said. "You know, when you see live Cabinet meetings and everybody's sitting in a room, I think he's done six or seven of them so far, and he just goes around the table, what have you done this month? Okay, tell us what you've done, what about you? And the whole table, have you ever seen anything like that? I haven't. It's because those people are patriots. They know they have a short window to get a lot of things done."Rich said he has been texting back and forth with the president about the TVA.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"He's like, What is going on? I said, It's bad. What's going on down here? And so he weighed in on it, started firing members of the board of the TVA and is gonna replace them all. What I want to see happen is TVA to completely have to change their charter, we're still: Go build power, go build power. We need power in this country, but treat American citizens like they should be treated and respect their property rights and respect their constitutional rights."The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Gavin Newsom has been on the opposite end of many Trump administration policies, from combating illegal immigration to his economic agenda. He most recently evoked support for businesses, possibly including marijuana growers, earlier this month when federal agents arrested dozens of illegal immigrants, some of whom were minors working alongside other migrants with convictions for murder, burglary, kidnapping and rape.Glass House Farms is not under investigation following raids at sites in Camarillo and Carpinteria. Of the 361 illegal immigrants arrested at both locations on July 10, at least 14 were minors who were rescued from potential exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking, the Department of Homeland Security said.NEWSOM ESCALATES TRUMP IMMIGRATION FEUD WITH FOUL-MOUTHED INSULT"Instead of supporting the businesses and workers that drive our economy and way of life, Stephen Millers tactics evoke chaos, fear and terror within our communities at every turn," Newsom posted on X at the time of the raids, referring to President Donald Trump's White House deputy chief of staff."At Millers direction, Trumps agents continue to detain U.S. citizens and racially profile Americans, ripping families apart and disappearing parents and workers into cruel federal detention centers to meet their self-imposed arrest quotas," he added.Diana Crofts-Pelayo, Newsom's director of communications, told Fox News Digital that the governor was not defending pot farms."It is simply a commentary on the tactics federal immigration officials are using to fulfill their massive detention quotas, which are causing a ripple effect within our society and economy," she said.NEWSOM ESCALATES TRUMP IMMIGRATION FEUD WITH FOUL-MOUTHED INSULTDuring the raid in Camarillo, a man who worked at the farm, Jaime Alanis Garcia, died during the operation. Graham Farrar, the co-founder, president, and board director of Glass House Farms, has denied any wrongdoing."Glass House has never knowingly violated applicable hiring practices and does not and has never employed minors," he wrote on X at the time, Fox News Digital previously reported. "We do not expect this to affect operations moving forward. We will provide additional details when applicable."Trump has floated giving a "temporary pass" to migrants working at farms and in the hospitality industry to avoid a negative impact from immigration enforcement operations.A recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece noted that while marijuana may be considered cool in California, where it is legal and taxed, voters in middle America don't share the same sentiment. Despite being legal, the illicit market is thriving, with only 38% of the cannabis consumed in California coming from licensed growers, according to a 2024 report released by the state Department of Cannabis Control.NEWSOM DONOR'S CANNABIS FARM UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION FOR 'CHILD LABOR VIOLATIONS'On July 1, the California excise tax on marijuana jumped from 15% to 19%. In January, Newsom's office said he would endorse halting the cannabis excise tax increase if a proposal ever ended up on his desk.Amy OGorman Jenkins, the executive director of the California Cannabis Operators Association, said the legal cannabis industry in California is subjected to an array of taxes, noting that no other age-restricted product in the state is taxed at the same rate, including alcohol and tobacco."There continues to be this misunderstanding that the cannabis industry is this cash cow," she told Fox News Digital, noting that consumers will purchase illegal cannabis rather than products from the overtaxed and over-regulated local market. "That fact of the matter is we have a very significant illicit market that's well documented in California. In addition, drug cartels have set up marijuana-growing operations in parts of the state. In a portion of California's Mendocino County, drug cartels have spent significant amounts of money to establish pot farms there, Mendocino County Sheriff Matthew Kendall previously told Fox News Digital.Earlier this month, seven Chinese citizens were charged in connection with a multimillion-dollar drug-trafficking organization that allegedly grew and distributed marijuana across the U.S. Northeast. In 2020, seven Laotian workers were killed at an illegal marijuana farm in Southern California."We have not reduced the illicit market. We haven't even made a dent," OGorman Jenkins said. "In large part due to the facts that consumers don't want to pay this much in taxes when they can order products online and go into illegal shops and spend half the price."Shortly after the pot farm raids in California, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond called out Newsom over his stance on illegal immigration, particularly on cannabis farms."Gavin Newsom may protect illegal activity at marijuana farms around California, but Oklahoma will not," Drummond wrote on Facebook. "Thats why my office is defending a state law to increase enforcement at these locations to protect innocent people and unsuspecting communities. We will not be deterred by activists attempting to shield dangerous operators and cartels."Following the raids on the two California cannabis farms, it was revealed that Farrar has donated thousands of dollars to California Democrats, including a $10,000 contribution to Newsom in 2018, according to California public campaign finance records. He also made donations to Santa Barbara County Democratic Central Committees federal political action committee and Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., according to Federal Election Commission records.Farrar did not respond to a request for comment.
