Fraternity hazing deaths happen to 'good kids from good families,' victim's father warns amid rush season
A man whose son died during a 2017 fraternity hazing ritual at Penn State University warned students and parents of the ills of the practice in an interview with Fox News Digital, saying anyone could become a victim.Jim Piazza's son, Timothy, was recruited to join the Beta Theta Pi chapter at the school in February 2017. He was invited to a bid acceptance party, where he and several other pledges were forced to consume a handle of vodka. They were then forced to drink more hard liquor before competing in an alcohol "obstacle course," which included "beer pong stations, and other stations where they had to drink varying forms of alcohol, wine bags, beer shotguns, that type of thing," Jim said.FAMILY OF COLLEGE STUDENT WHO DIED IN NASHVILLE FILES WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT AGAINST FRATERNITY"After that obstacle course was completed, you could see in video all of the individuals, all the pledges were pretty banged up," Jim said. "Then they all went to the basement of this fraternity house and they continued on feeding the pledges drinks. Different fraternity guys would hand them drinks and make them chug it and whatnot."Soon thereafter, Timothy was moved to an upstairs couch where he was left alone. According to Jim, he attempted to open a door and leave the house, but couldn't given his level of intoxication. He then fell down 15 basement stairs, causing a brain bleed and a ruptured spleen. He suffered a lung collapse due to aspiration from his own vomit.Still, the fraternity members picked him up and returned him to the couch."They threw him back on the couch and throughout the night they were slapping him, throwing alcohol on him, throwing stuff at him. And then finally at about, you know, 1 o'clock in the morning or so, they all went to bed, and they left him laying there," Jim said.Timothy was found in the basement again the next morning, unconscious and unresponsive. Jim said fraternity members spent 45 minutes deciding what to do before they called 911. A little more than 12 hours later, Timothy died at Hershey Medical Center. He had alcohol poisoning from the incident, and the official cause of death was the brain bleed, known as a subdural hematoma.CALIFORNIA STATE FRESHMAN DROWNS DURING FRATERNITY TRIP TO ARIZONA LAKE"When everything happened and we got to the hospital and then they told us that, that Tim's brain injury was nonrecoverable, I felt like I was in a dream," Jim said."To learn that we lost him to people that were supposed to become his friends, and they could have saved his life you can't even get your head around it," he continued. "Like, how could that be? Whether they're his friends or not, how could individuals not care at all to make sure somebody was OK? It's brutal, and it continues to be brutal."Jim and his wife, Evelyn, now travel the country doing activism work. They speak to fraternities and sororities about the dangers of hazing, telling Timothy's story. They were also instrumental in the passage of the Timothy J. Piazza AntiHazing Law in Pennsylvania, which classifies hazing rituals that cause serious injuries or deaths as felonies. Their work also led to the passage of the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act in December, which mandates established standardized hazing reporting guidelines for universities, as well as various accountability measures.FORMER SETON HALL PITCHER DETAILS SEXUAL HAZING, BLOOD INJURIES AND SAYS COACH FAILED TO ACTJim said they focus on educating Greek life leaders about the potential criminal repercussions of hazing and often have success getting through to students, but he also has a message for parents who are often "lacking" an understanding of hazing."We really need to get to parents, because many parents don't think it can happen to them," Jim said. "'It can't happen to my kid, that's somebody else's kid that it happens to.' Well, it does happen, and it happens to good kids from good families, you know, wealthy, not wealthy. It's non-discriminating."And while parents might not be held criminally liable, there are other risks, Jim warned.Twenty-one fraternity members were charged in his son's case, and he estimates they each spent about a million dollars on their criminal defenses.Luke Visser, Michael Bonatucci and Joshua Kurczewski former members of the fraternity, were all sentenced to jail time in 2019 after pleading guilty to hazing-related charges.Visser reportedly received a two to six month sentence followed by three years of probation, while Bontanucci received a one to six month sentence and one year of probation and Kurczewski received a three to nine month sentence and one year of probation.Last year, former chapter president Brendan Young and former vice president/pledge master Daniel Casey each pleaded guilty to 14 counts of hazing and one count of reckless endangerment, according to People. They each received two to four months in prison and three years of probation."You're basically spending your parents' retirement money when you're doing that," he said. "And they need to make sure they're having a conversation with their kid to say 'hey, if somebody's asking you to do things that make you feel uncomfortable or make you or someone else unsafe, just say no.'"COLLEGE SENIOR KILLED AFTER 'ACCIDENTALLY' FALLING FROM TROPICAL ISLAND HOTEL BALCONY DAYS BEFORE GRADUATIONParents need to tell their children to focus on learning and developing skills for a career, and to avoid getting into trouble inside or outside of academia, Jim said.As for fraternity pledges going through rush this fall, Jim said that based on the structure and dynamics of fraternities, they have the power to control their own fate, and don't have to be victims of hazing."At the end of the day, the pledges have a little bit of power in that they could just band together and say, we're not doing that, because the fraternity members need them," he said."They need the money, right? They need money to move in the house, and they need the money to pay the dues," he continued. "And we know of groups that have said, no, we are not doing that,' and the fraternity members gave them a hard time at first, and then after a while it was like, OK, well, we still need the pledge class, so fine."Jim criticized some fraternities at the national level, and some chapters of some fraternities at various schools for not taking anti-hazing policies seriously enough, saying that "they're not getting it" and that "same old, same old" hazing habits still continue. However, he has not soured on Greek life as a whole."I don't have a problem with Greek life," he said. "I think it has a lot of good things that it could give to the students. It can make a big campus small. It could create friendships that are everlasting. I think it teaches individuals that take the leadership roles how to be leaders."Beta Theta Pi did not return a comment request.

Scoop: 'Make America Fentanyl Free' campaign launches to help Trump lower overdose deaths
FIRST ON FOX: A new campaign launched on Monday to help fulfill President Donald Trump's pledge to reduce fentanyl overdose deaths, which are one of the nation's deadliest public health crises. The campaign, titled Make America Fentanyl Free, is described as a privately-funded multi-million-dollar ad blitz on national and local television, and across all major social media platforms, including X, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook. The effort, which was first shared with Fox News Digital on Monday, aims to reduce the number of Americans killed by fentanyl, a highly potent and extremely dangerous synthetic opioid. Fentanyl and fentanyl-related drugs have been responsible for most drug overdose deaths in the U.S. for nearly a decade."The Make America Fentanyl Free ad campaign was launched to support President Trumps efforts to save American lives from deadly fentanyl, which continues to be a leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45," organizers said in a statement.DRUG DEADLIER THAN FENTANYL SPREADS ACROSS THE AMERICASOrganizers emphasized that the mission of the campaign, which is also online at MakeAmericaFentanylFree.com, is to inform Americans about the devastating effects of fentanyl, and pointed out that "ingesting as little as three grains of fentanyl can be lethal within minutes."The campaign is also intended to educate the public about the hidden dangers of fentanyl, which is frequently disguised in other substances, such as cocaine and marijuana.TRUMP SIGNED FENTANYL LAW WILL END CAT AND MOUSE WITH TRAFFICKERS"Make America Fentanyl Free is working with President Trump to aggressively make sure every American understands the danger of fentanyl," the narrator in the ad says. The effort also intends to "send a strong unequivocal messageto Mexican drug cartels that actions leading to American deaths or harm will result in serious consequences."The Trump administration says it has lowered fentanyl deaths in the U.S. by beefing up security along the nation's borders, emphasizing law enforcement, and raising tariffs against China and Mexico to keep fentanyl and other lethal drugs out of the country.Organizers touted that "on day one in office, President Trump shut down the dangerous, open border and stemmed the flow of deadly fentanyl through our country. As a result, fentanyl traffic at the border fell by 54% in the first months of the Trump Administration.FATHER WHOSE SON DIED FROM FENTANYL WARNS OVERDOSES CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONEBut organizers said their effort is needed to "continue eradicating deadly fentanyl from our communities."Trump last month signed into law a bill permanently placing street versions of fentanyl on the list of controlled substances, which should make it easier to prosecute fentanyl traffickers and put them behind bars. But the Trump administration has also been criticized when it comes to battling fentanyl deaths, for seeking major cuts to domestic programs that work to reduce drug demand. And Democrats in California, taking aim at what they call Trump's "unlawful deployment of military personnel to Los Angeles," say the effort has slashed the Californias National Guard's fentanyl and drug interdiction force by 32%, "directly harming Californias ability to fight the flow of illegal drugs into our communities."Organizers of the new effort highlight that Make America Fentanyl Free is a privately funded campaign "launched without taxpayer dollars."Some of the major contributions to fund the campaign have come from a number of the president's major donors and allies, according to sources in Trump's political orbit.

Comedian Marc Maron says he's 'always had a problem' with Bill Maher, calling him 'desperate'
Stand-up comedian Marc Maron said on Sunday that he "always had a problem" with "Real Time" host Bill Mahers tone and believed he has a "desperate chasing of relevance" issue. The "WTF" podcaster sat with "Pod Save America" co-host Jon Lovett, where he was asked about his opinion on the HBO host among other comics."I can't do it," Maron responded. "I always had a problem with his tone."Maron said that he had previously appeared on Mahers "Real Time" show as well as his "Politically Incorrect" show for ABC a few times in the past. Despite his experience with Maher, Maron claimed that he couldnt escape how "desperate" he believes Maher has become.BILL MAHER PRAISES NEWSOM FOR 'TROLLING' TRUMP ON SOCIAL MEDIA: VERY FUNNY"I feel with Bill that there is this, and it happens with some of the other boomers, there's this desperate chasing of relevance that, you know, changes someone's mind in terms of how they approach what they do and also kind of makes the whole undertaking feel desperate," Maron said.He continued, "Outside of his ideas about primarily, I think wokeness, I don't know, it's just not for me. I know his joke writers. He's got good joke writers who know how to write for his tone, and I've known a couple of those guys. They were comics, and they're good guys, but I can't see past, you know, the desperation in what he's willing to do to stay in the conversation."Fox News Digital reached out to Mahers publicist for comment. While long aligned with liberal policies, Maher has in recent years drawn greater attention for his sharp critiques of Democrats and so-called woke politics. In his most recent show on Friday, Maher called out the Democratic Party for allowing President Donald Trump to pick off their voters in the 2024 election.LIBERAL COMIC WHO HELPED POPULARIZE PODCASTING EXPLAINS WHY HE TURNED DOWN HILLARY CLINTON INTERVIEW"While Democrats offer up high-minded intangibles like equity and saving the soul of America, Trump says, Hey waitress, how would you like to pay no tax on those tips? Remember that? And everybody was like, Why didnt we think of that?'" Maher said.Maron, also a liberal, told Newsweek last week that while he believed everything, including progressives, was "fair game," he did not consider himself "anti-woke" like Maher.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"The problem with the left is all the infighting and everybody's arguing about what should be platforms, what's more important? And I dealt with that years ago at Air America and stuff. I wasn't going to Bill Maher it and accuse them. I do in a lighthearted way, but I am not an anti-woke person. But I do think there is some fun poking to be had at people that are overly committed to very small things and that's what justifies their political existence. So I thought that was right for comedy," Maron said.

MIKE POMPEO: How Trump can save Lebanon from Iran's influence
Lebanon stands at a crossroads. After decades of Iranian manipulation and Hezbollah's stranglehold on the country, President Donald Trump has a historic opportunity to help the Lebanese people reclaim their nation while advancing key American interests. But success requires clarity about what must happen first. The international community has spent years discussing Lebanon's problems, including corrupt governance, a collapsed central bank and dysfunctional institutions ranging from the judiciary to law enforcement. These are real challenges that demand attention. However, none of these reforms matter indeed, none of them are even possible as long as Hezbollah maintains its private army.Lebanon cannot have two militaries. It cannot have one group that answers to Tehran while claiming to serve Beirut. There can be only one legitimate force capable of defending Lebanon: the Lebanese Armed Forces. Lebanon and the world must call out Hezbollah as the terrorist organization it is, and Lebanon must commit to ridding itself of its terrorist scourge. This is not merely a policy preference it is an existential necessity. Every dollar spent on governance reform, every effort to rebuild institutions, every attempt to restore economic stability will fail as long as an Iranian proxy holds veto power through the barrel of a gun.TRUMP NEUTRALIZED IRAN. BUT ONE BIG MIDDLE EAST THREAT STILL LOOMSHezbollah's weapons are not just a security threat; they are the fundamental obstacle to Lebanon's sovereignty.President Trump has accomplished a great deal to advance peace in the region by understanding that America's enemies respect strength, not wishful thinking. To achieve this in Lebanon, the United States must act quickly.First, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanons (UNIFIL) failed mission must come to an end. With just a few weeks left of its mandate, now is the time to pull the plug on this United Nations boondoggle. For decades, UNIFIL has provided little more than a fig leaf for Hezbollah's military buildup. Like UNRWA in Gaza, it has become worse than useless it has become an enabler of the very problems it was meant to solve. Sending American tax dollars to the United Nations for this mission is not just wasteful, it is morally bankrupt. This is low-hanging fruit for immediate action.THE ISRAELI-IRANIAN WAR IS NOT OVERIT HAS JUST ENTERED A DANGEROUS PAUSEThe U.S. must also support the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). The LAF represents Lebanon's best hope for unified, legitimate governance. We must provide them with everything they need, including intelligence sharing, advanced hardware, comprehensive leadership training and other necessary support. When we empower legitimate institutions instead of trying to work around illegitimate ones, we get results.Lastly, but arguably most important, we must work with our friends and allies to systematically destroy Iran's weapons pipeline to Lebanon. Every rocket, every missile, every piece of military equipment that Iran moves into Lebanon must be identified and eliminated. We have the intelligence capabilities. We have willing partners in Israel. And we now have leverage over Syria's new government, which depends on American support for its survival. Use that leverage. Make clear that allowing Iranian weapons transfers through Syrian territory will have consequences. This is not about nation-building or endless Middle Eastern entanglements. This is about recognizing that some problems have military solutions. Hezbollah's arsenal was not built through negotiations, and it will not be dismantled through diplomatic niceties.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONThe Lebanese people deserve better than living under the shadow of an Iranian militia. They deserve a government that answers to them, not to the ayatollahs in Tehran. They deserve economic opportunity, not the economic stagnation that comes from being a client state of a pariah regime. And the American people also deserve better. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization with American blood on its hands, having killed hundreds of U.S. service members and civilians over the decades. Its continued strength only emboldens Iran's broader campaign of terror against American interests worldwide. But wanting these outcomes is not enough. Good intentions without decisive action have characterized Western policy toward Lebanon for too long. President Trump has shown he is willing to take the decisive action that previous administrations avoided. The window for action is closing. Iran is already working to rebuild Hezbollah's capabilities. Regional powers are positioning themselves for Lebanon's future. If America does not act now, we will find ourselves watching yet another Middle Eastern country slip further into Iran's orbit. Just as in the south, now is the time to act in the north.Lebanon's salvation lies not with the United Nations or yet another international conference. It lies in a simple principle: one country, one legitimate military. That can create an enduring peace. President Trump has the tools and the opportunity to make this happen. The question is not whether we can fix Lebanon. The question is whether we will choose to do what it takes to have a stable Lebanon and Middle East.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM MIKE POMPEO

Risk of colon cancer slashed by eating specific types of vegetables, study finds
Including more broccoli in your diet could reduce the risk of colon cancer, new research suggests.Diet is known to be a key modifiable risk factor for colon cancer particularly a lack of vegetables and dietary fiber, as well as excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption, according to researchers.Cruciferous vegetables including broccoli as well as cauliflower, kale, cabbage and Brussels sprouts have previously been identified as risk-reducers, but it was unclear what volume of consumption had this benefit.COLORECTAL CANCER MAY CAUSE THESE 4 HIDDEN WARNING SIGNSThese types of vegetables contain special natural compounds called glucosinolates, which break down into powerful substances called isothiocyanates, the researchers revealed.Isothiocyanates can help to keep cancer at bay by detoxifying the body, killing damaged cells and slowing or stopping the growth of unhealthy cells.Chinese researchers analyzed 17 studies that included a total of 639,539 participants, 97,595 of whom were ultimately diagnosed with colon cancer. The studies were pulled from the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases.Based on the participants food questionnaires and cancer status, the study found that consuming cruciferous vegetables was linked to a reduced risk of colon cancer.COLON CANCER MAY BE MISSED AS DOCTORS RELY ON AI, ALARMING STUDY WARNSCompared to participants who ate the least amount of the veggies, the group that ate the most had a 17% lower risk of colon cancer.Eating approximately 20 grams per day was linked to a "significant decrease" in risk, with the decline leveling off at around 40 grams per day.The findings were published in the journal BMC Gastroenterology. The researchers noted that the study had some limitations."These findings should be interpreted cautiously due to methodological limitations, including heterogeneity in study designs, dietary assessment methods and potential residual confounding," they wrote.Another limitation is that most studies focused on participants from North America and Asia, where colon cancer rates are higher. This "limits generalizability to populations with distinct dietary patterns or lower colon cancer prevalence," the researchers wrote."Future high-quality prospective cohorts in underrepresented regions (e.g., Africa, South America) are essential for validation."Withnearly two million diagnoses and 903,859 deaths each year, colon cancer is the third most common and the second-leading cause of cancer deaths globally, statistics show.Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, was not involved in the study but shared his input on the findings."This is an extensive meta-analysis of close to 100,000 patients, which shows a marked decreased colon cancer risk with a diet high in cruciferous vegetables," he told Fox News Digital.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER"These vegetables are high in fiber, antioxidants and especially glucosinolates, which are converted in the body to bioactive isothiocynates, which are known anti-carcinogens that decrease tumor formation."Siegel also reiterated the limitations, including the variance in how the diet was determined and the fact that it is mainly based on observational data."Still, this is very convincing and adds to the growing literature showing that not only do ultraprocessed foods increase your risk of colon cancer, but healthier diets high in vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables, decrease that risk."For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/healthThe doctor added that he also recommends the Mediterranean diet, which includes these vegetables as a staple.

Some National Guard troops are now armed in Washington, DC
National Guard units deployed in Washington, D.C., as part of the Trump administrations effort to slash violent crime have been authorized to carry firearms, the D.C. National Guard has announced and some troops have already been observed armed on patrol. The Guard said on Saturday it had formally authorized members supporting Joint Task ForceDC to carry their service-issued M17 pistols.Brig. Gen. Leland D. Blanchard, the Guards interim commander, said the decision came at the direction of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and in coordination with local and federal law enforcement. The Guard stressed that the weapons are for personal protection and that troops operate under strict rules for use of force, including de-escalation techniques."This decision is not something taken lightly," Blanchard said. "We are in coordination with our law enforcement partners and all appropriate review processes are in place."NATIONAL GUARD ROLLOUT IN 19 STATES NOT LINKED TO TRUMPS CRIME CRACKDOWN, WH SAYSThe Associated Press, citing a Defense Department official who was not authorized to speak publicly, reported that some Guard units would be armed with handguns and others with rifles. An AP photographer also observed South Carolina Guardsmen with holstered handguns outside Union Station on Sunday.Under the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, the use of federal armed forces for civilian law enforcement is generally prohibited. But the National Guard will operate under Title 32 Section 502F authority, which does not apply to Posse Comitatus."Our task force members incorporate de-escalation techniques within the D.C. National Guard rules for the use of force," said Col. Larry Doane, commander of Joint Task ForceDC. "Incorporating all of these measures ensures they are fully prepared to support law enforcement and safeguard the residents of Washington, D.C."TRUMP JOINS POLICE AND MILITARY FORCES IN WASHINGTON STREETSPresident Donald Trump activated the National Guard in Washington, D.C., earlier this month as part of an effort to curb violent crime in the nations capital. Nearly 2,300 Guard soldiers and airmen from Washington, D.C., and six states are mobilized, according to a Joint Task Force spokesperson.Under direct presidential authority, Guard members have been posted to monuments, checkpoints and traffic stops across all eight wards, with a mission of deterring crime and maintaining a visible security presence. They are carrying out presence patrols across the city, including at Metro stations, Union Station, the National Mall and alongside U.S. Park Police.A Defense Department official told Fox News Digital Monday that members of Joint Task ForceDC will soon deploy with their service-issued weapons, consistent with their training and their mission to help lower the crime rate in the nations capital. The official said the Guards interim commander can adjust how those forces are used in coordination with D.C. police and federal law enforcement partners.Touting the operations success at least 465 arrests have been made Trump has signaled he intends to broaden the D.C. mission to other cities. "Were going to make it safe, and were going to then go on to other places," he told federal agents and Guard troops Thursday at a D.C. patrol center. On Friday, Trump added, "I think Chicago will be our next. And then well help with New York."Officials have also linked the D.C. operation to beautification efforts ahead of next years 250th Independence Day celebration.Fox News' Jacqui Heinrich and Liz Freden contributed to this report.

ICE arrests Abrego Garcia at Maryland check-in, lawyer says
BALTIMORE, Md. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested Kilmar Abrego-Garcia Monday morning, shortly after he arrived for a check-in at the agency's field office in Baltimore, Maryland, his lawyer confirmed.Abrego-Garcia's legal fight for months has dominated U.S. headlines, after he was deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador in violation of a 2019 court order. He faces a possible second deportation, this time to Uganda.Shortly before his arrival Monday morning, immigration advocates, faith leaders, and other community members massed outside the field office at sunrise for a vigil, organized by two immigration advocacy groups. The Trump administration returned him to the U.S. months after sending him to El Salvador, under orders from a federal judge and from the Supreme Court. He was arrested upon return to the U.S. on human smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennesee. He remained in federal detention until Friday, when he was released from U.S. custody and ordered to return to Maryland, where a judge said he could remain under electronic surveillance and under ICE supervision while awaiting trial.ICE officials notified Abrego-Garcia's attorneys shortly after his release on Friday that they planned to deport him to Uganda, an East African nation that reached a deal with the U.S. last week to accept migrants deported by the Trump administration. The notice, sent by ICE's Office of the Principal Legal Adviser, said it was intended to "serve as notice that DHS may remove your client, Kilmar Armando Abrego-Garcia, to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours from now (absent weekends)."Trump's border czar Tom Homan told Fox News in an interview Sunday night that Abrego-Garcia was "absolutely" going to be deported from the U.S,, and said Uganda is "on the table" as the third country of removal."We have an agreement with them. It's on a table, absolutely," Homan said in an interview on "The Big Weekend Show" Sunday evening."He is absolutely going to be deported," Homan reiterated. For now, he said, Abrego-Garcia "can enjoy the little time he has with his family. And for the person who says we're not going to separate family, his family can go with him, because he's leaving."This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.
