Students at elite high tuition schools face high crime as 2025 data reveals risky zip codes
As students head back to campus this fall, safety is once again top of mind for parents and new and returning students alike.New data reveals the most dangerous college towns in America for 2025 and, while each has its own challenges, former U.S. Secret Service agent and campus security expert Bobby McDonald says there is that plenty students can do to protect themselves."Common sense on the front end will negate a lot of bad things on the back end," McDonald told Fox News Digital. "Safety needs to become muscle memory, like buckling a seat belt."Compiled by Wasatch Defense Lawyers, the 2025 "Most Dangerous College Towns" rankings are based on a two-year analysis (May 2023May 2025) of crime data from the FBIs Uniform Crime Reporting system and local police departments. The study examined 26 U.S. college towns, normalizing rates of violent crime, property crime, drug offenses and weapons violations per 10,000 residents to allow fair comparisons across different-sized communities.FORMER CAPITOL POLICE CHIEF SAYS CRIME BY GANGS OF YOUTH IN DC HAS SPIKED, ESCAPED CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOODSGainesville leads the nation in reported crimes per capita, with 179 incidents per 10,000 residents between May 2023 and May 2025.While the University of Florida campus itself is well-patrolled, surrounding areas see higher rates of property crime, burglary and theft. The citys vibrant nightlife and large student population create opportunities for both petty and serious offenses. When it comes to nightlife, McDonald said you "don't ever want to leave anybody at the bar.""Nothing good happens at that point with respect to that individual that youre leaving behind. So your friend may be upset with you for a couple of hours. But the fact of the matter is, you took charge of a situation, got them in a car, got them on the bus, got on the railroad, got in the subway, whatever it is, and got them home safe."US CRIME DROPPED WIDELY IN 2024, FBI SAYS WITH SOME NOTABLE CAVEATSTuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama, ranks second with 149 crimes per 10,000 residents. Much of the risk is tied to areas with heavy nightlife activity, where alcohol-related incidents and thefts are more common. The citys mix of student renters and visiting sports fans can also create conditions for opportunistic crime.Tempes ranking is driven by its size, dense student population and active party scene. The city recorded 136 crimes per 10,000 residents, with property crimes such as burglary and vehicle theft among the most reported. Its proximity to Phoenix, Arizona also adds to its crime ranking."Weve got to think about the little things. Lock the door, lock the door to your car. A lot of times, kids will leave their wallet or their keys in their car and the door open. Thats not really someone stealing your car, thats an invitation for someone to take your car, so we dont want people to have to live in a prison, but again, just a little bit of common sense on the front end will negate a lot of bad things on the back end."New Haven lands at number four with 126 crimes per 10,000 residents. While Yale University invests heavily in campus security, nearby neighborhoods see higher levels of violent crime, including robbery and assault.MAYOR OF NATION'S 'BEST-RUN' CITY CREDITS FOCUS ON RESPONSIBLE BUDGETING, PUBLIC SAFETYLike many, if not most, universities, Yale has invested in campus security. McDonald encouraged new and returning students to take advantage of free resources provided for students."Its very incumbent upon those police agencies to have a dialogue thats always going on with students that they are approachable. That theyre reachable when the call comes in, that they have a quick response time to show that they are interested not only in the students that are living in the dorm, but the students that are living in a private house two blocks off of campus," he said."Those students are still our customers and we wanna make sure that theyve very well taken care of."Ithacas charming small-town image contrasts with its property crime rate, placing it fifth on the list at 120 crimes per 10,000 residents. Burglaries and thefts from unlocked residences and vehicles are common. While violent crime is relatively low, opportunistic crime can spike during academic breaks when many students leave town.At 112 crimes per 10,000 residents, most incidents involve property offenses and vehicle break-ins. The per-capita rate is magnified by Logans smaller population size of 57,000.BUSINESS OWNERS BLAST WEAKENED LEADERSHIP AS BLUE CITY RANKS AMONG MOST DANGEROUS IN USWith 109 crimes per 10,000 residents, Iowa City faces challenges related to alcohol use, theft and occasional violent offenses. The universitys lively downtown district is a hot spot for both student activity and petty crime.McDonald encourages students to build safety habits before going out."The time to figure out what to do when something goes wrong is not when its happening. Its to have a little bit of a plan beforehand," he said.Cedar Citys crime rate of 91 per 10,000 residents places it eighth on the list, with most incidents concentrated in low-traffic residential areas. While violent crime is relatively rare, property crimes like burglary and theft occur more often than many realize.East Lansing reports 90 crimes per 10,000 residents, with incidents clustered near busy student corridors and nightlife hubs. McDonald provided practical tips for students to have common sense."We want students to make good decisions. And we also want them to have common sense. They want, we want, to travel in pairs," he said. "Dont be showing a lot of money. Dont leave somebody behind at the bar."Both theft and alcohol-related disturbances are common, especially on weekends with the school's sports fans."If you see people hanging around the campus that dont fit the bill, certainly not profiling somebody, but most people around the campuses are 18-22. Now, is that to say we dont have any students that are 40? No, we dont have many students that are living in the dorms though," McDonald said. "So if you see people hanging who dont look like they should be there, then report them to the campus police or security, let them deal with it."Bloomington, Indiana, rounds out the top 10 with 85 crimes per 10,000 residents. From 2023 to 2024, the Bloomington Police Department reported a 24% drop in violent crime.

SCOOP: Stacy Garrity launches Republican campaign for Pennsylvania governor
FIRST ON FOX: Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced her Republican campaign for governor Monday, teeing up what could be a competitive race against incumbent Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro in 2026.Speaking exclusively with Fox News Digital ahead of her campaign launch, the Republican candidate said she is challenging Shapiro in next year's gubernatorial election because he "has failed the state," on critical issues, including energy production, education and job creation. She said the state's vast oil and gas resources are the keys to its economy."I have a much different vision for the Commonwealth," Garrity, 61, said in a phone interview before announcing her campaign for governor. "We really need to take advantage of what we have right under our feet, which would create a lot of financial breathing room for the Commonwealth that we desperately need."Garrity said her position on energy puts her right in step with President Donald Trump and Sen. Dave McCormick, who both called for unleashing American energy in battleground Pennsylvania during the 2024 presidential election.2028 HOPEFUL CHALLENGES TRUMP'S JUVENILE SURGERY BAN WHILE OPPOSING WOMEN'S SPORTS BILL RESTRICTIONS"We have so much natural gas under our feet," Garrity said, calling the energy "billions of dollars in economic opportunity."DEMOCRAT MIKIE SHERRILL WINS NJ GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARY, SETTING UP SHOWDOWN WITH TRUMP-BACKED GOP WINNERPennsylvania, a reliable swing state, experienced a red wave in 2024, as Trump won at the top of the ticket and McCormick unseated former longtime Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., on the Senate line.Garrity said Pennsylvania voters delivered a message loud and clear last year.Pennsylvanians want "more money in our pockets" and less of the "government's hands in our pockets," the treasurer, who said she travels to all 67 counties in the Commonwealth each year, said.Keystone State residents also want school choice, safe communities and no "boys competing against girls in sports," Garrity said. The Republican hopeful took aim at Shapiro's policies on school choice, arguing that "he might be able to play political games with education, but our kids certainly can't."Shapiro recently told reporters that the Commonwealth doesn't need "extremist politicians" trying to legislate student participation in sports, in reference to a recent bill in the Pennsylvania legislature that would prevent transgender athletes from playing in women's sports, according to WITF."He's with radical liberals that are pushing a political agenda," Garrity said, before adding, "As far as I'm concerned, that's not fairness, and it's not leadership. It's really, in my opinion, a betrayal of common sense and the integrity of women's athletics."Garrity also criticized Shapiro for what she described as flip-flopping on school choice and "fail[ing] the state" in delivering a state budget.Shapiro, who presides over a politically divided state legislature, missed the Commonwealth's deadline to pass its budget this year. The Democratic governor captured national attention last year when he was short-listed as a potential running mate for former Vice President Kamala Harris, after former President Joe Biden suspended his re-election campaign."I'm not as well polished as Josh Shapiro," Garrity admitted to Fox News Digital. "I'm definitely not as good of a politician as Josh Shapiro, and he's a prolific fundraiser. This is going to be a tough race."But despite Shapiro's potential advantage as an incumbent governor with national recognition, Garrity said, "I am a really tough worker."Garrity touted that in her first race for state treasurer, she managed to upset a popular incumbent, and "then the second time around, I got more votes for this election than any statewide candidate in Pennsylvania's history, including Josh Shapiro.""I have been an underdog my whole life, in the army and in business and in politics, and that's why I've been able to succeed when the odds are stacked against me," Garrity said."State treasurer is my first role in public office, but not my first in public service," the Republican hopeful said. "I did spend 30 years in the Army Reserves. I was deployed three times to the Middle East."Garrity also served in the private sector, at Global Tungsten & Powders, where she worked her way up to becoming one of two female vice presidents. Now, as state treasurer, Garrity said, "Every day that I get to wake up and serve hardworking Pennsylvanians is truly a blessing."Garrity has been teasing her gubernatorial run for months. Fellow Trump-ally Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., was considered a potential Republican candidate as well. His announcement last month that he would not run for Pennsylvania governor cleared a path for Garrity's announcement on Monday morning.Pennsylvania's gubernatorial primary is set for May 19, 2026, and the midterm election is slated for Nov. 3, 2026.

Back from Alaska, Trump starts week with crucial foreign policy talks over Ukraine war
President Donald Trump's foreign policy agenda is set to take center stage again this week, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visiting the White House on Monday as Washington continues efforts to broker peace between Moscow and Kyiv. The upcoming meeting comes on the heels of Trump's summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage on Friday, where the U.S. leader shifted from demanding a ceasefire to calling for a final peace deal. Trump discussed some of the details of his meeting with Putin during a phone call with Zelenskyy from Air Force One.EUROPEAN LEADERS WILL JOIN TRUMP-ZELENSKYY MEETING, SIGNALING SOLIDARITY WITH UKRAINEThe White House has yet to release details of the meeting but has acknowledged that key European allies will accompany Zelenskyy.NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb all confirmed their plans to attend.Over the weekend, Zelenskyy acknowledged his last White House visit cut short by a shouting match with both Trump and Vice President JD Vance and told reporters in Brussels he hopes Mondays meeting "will be productive" rather than a repeat of Februarys encounter.Trump's back-to-back meetings with both former Soviet republics could set the stage for a trilateral summit with the U.S., Russia and Ukraine.TRUMP: WE'RE GOING STRAIGHT TO RUSSIA-UKRAINE PEACE DEAL, 'NOT A MERE CEASEFIRE'Over the weekend, Zelenskyy said that, so far, Russia has "given no sign that the trilateral will happen." The Ukrainian leader also said over the weekend that he would use his meetings in Washington to stress that Kyiv will reject any peace deal with Moscow that undermines Ukraines sovereignty.Trump signaled that Putin could agree to end the war if Zelenskyy ceded the entirety of the hotly-contested Donbas region to Russia. The area, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, is an industrial hub where coal mining and steel production remain central to Ukraines economy. Control of Donbass mines and factories would hand Moscow powerful leverage over Kyivs post-war financial survival."The constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible to give up territory or trade land," Zelenskyy said during a press conference at the EU Commission on Sunday.'OUR POSITION IS CLEAR:' ZELENSKYY AND EU DISMISS CEDING UKRAINIAN LAND TO RUSSIA"Since the territorial issue is so important, it should be discussed only by the leaders of Ukraine and Russia at the trilateral Ukraine, United States, Russia," Zelenskyy said.Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed reports that Trump supports Russia's conditions for peace."The president has said that in terms of territories, these are things that Zelenskyy is going to have to decide on," Rubio told Maria Bartiromo on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures.""All the president is trying to do here is narrow down the open issues," Rubio said, adding that Trump remains focused on ending the Kremlin's three-and-a-half-year war in Ukraine.

Trump's AI plan is a bulwark against the rising threat from China
In July, some of the brightest minds in American technology descended on Washington to celebrate a major milestone: the launch of President Donald Trump's bold initiative to ensure the United States remains the world's unrivaled leader in artificial intelligence (AI).Let me be blunt: the AI arms race is no longer theoretical. It's here. And we cannot afford to come in second place. In business, if you don't constantly adapt and innovate, you lose. Nations are no different. If we fail to lead in AI, we risk surrendering our economic and national security edge to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)a regime that seeks to challenge American technological supremacy and reshape the global order in its authoritarian image. AMERICA MUST WIN THE AI RACE AND PREPARE FOR THE WORSTTrump understands this. That's why his vision for American renewal is laser-focused on innovation, particularly in AI and emerging technologies that will shape our economy and define the nature of future conflict. We have to stop being complacent with a slow, outdated and reactive government. The future demands urgency, ambition and a commitment to putting America first at every turn. This is about building a trusted AI ecosystem that is private-sector led, American-built, and decisive in its capacity to defend freedom. There's a quote from Christian Brose's book, "The Kill Chain," that has stayed with me: "Over the past decade, in U.S. war games against China, the United States has a nearly perfect record: We have lost almost every single time."DETAILS OF TRUMP'S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED AI PLAN REVEALED BY WHITE HOUSE AHEAD OF MAJOR SPEECHThat's a wake up call for every American. The CCP is not just trying to compete. They're trying to dominate. From economic espionage and cyber infiltration to exploiting our supply chains and siphoning off our data, the CCP is engaged in full-spectrum technological warfare. The next conflict will not look like the last. It will be a battle of data, autonomy, and algorithmic superiorityand the side that controls the best AI will win. \This isn't just a defense imperative; it's an economic one. The AI infrastructure boom will generate thousands of high-paying jobs across the country. From building advanced data centers to manufacturing chips, American workers are at the center of this effort. And making sure every family in this country has the opportunity to get a good job is how we win. That's why Trump's action plan doesn't just emphasize innovation; it prioritizes workforce development, energy modernization and secure supply chains.Wyoming's vast energy resources will be absolutely critical to winning this race. AI data centers require massive amounts of reliable, baseload power the kind that Wyoming's abundant coal and natural gas can deliver, 24/7, 365 days a year. While other states struggle with expensive, intermittent energy sources, Wyoming offers both the dependable power and affordable rates that give American companies a decisive advantage. Our state stands ready to power America's AI revolution with the energy infrastructure that will keep our systems running affordably when national and economic security is on the line. AI ARMS RACE: US AND CHINA WEAPONIZE DRONES, CODE AND BIOTECH FOR THE NEXT GREAT WARAmerican manufacturing is at the heart of this effort, and that includes making sure our critical data stays right here at home. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONLet's ask a simple question: do you want your personal data stored on American soil, protected by American workers and American lawsor housed in China, where it's subject to Communist surveillance and exploitation? This isn't a hypothetical. It's already happening. And that's exactly why American companies are investing billions to build state-of-the-art facilities here at home. These aren't just buildings filled with servers. Data centers are the digital backbone of everything from telehealth and e-commerce to our intelligence agencies and defense systems. They are a critical piece of the AI puzzle and a national security asset we can't afford to outsource. But they're also massive energy consumerswhich makes Wyoming's affordable, dependable energy production essential to keeping these facilities running 24/7. LEE ZELDIN: TRUMP'S EPA CLEARING THE REGULATORY PATH FOR AMERICA TO DOMINATE THE GLOBAL AI REVOLUTIONTrump's plan rightly focuses on removing barriers and burdensome regulations to allow for the rapid buildout of data centers. His America First AI agenda is the roadmap. But it's up to all of us, from the private sector to Congress, to take the action necessary to propel us forward. We cannot afford to be nave about the economic and national security risks of falling behind. We must ensure that the future of AI is developed in the U.S.A., powered by American energy, and guided by our enduring values of freedom, innovation and hard work. The AI arms race is on and America doesn't lose races. Let's win this one, together.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM SEN. CYNTHIA LUMMIS

Skin cancer risk can increase with dangerous new trend, doctors warn
Dermatologists are warning about the dangers of a TikTok trend where teens create "sunburn tattoos."This entails allowing the skin to get sunburned while wearing stickers, tape or sunscreen in order to create artistic designs.Although some young adults told Fox News Digital that they use their skin as a canvas to create these sunburn displays for social media attention and because it "looks cool," skin care experts say this could be harmful to skin health.SHARPIE LIP-LINER TREND GOES VIRAL AS DOCTORS WARN OF POTENTIAL DANGERS"Regardless of how creative or harmless it appears, any sunburn is skin injury," Dr. Anthony Rossi, a double board-certified dermatologic surgeon in New York City, told Fox News Digital."This sunburn tattoo trend still involves deliberate UV damage to the skin, which over time can increase the risk of both immediate and long-term consequences."Sunburn accelerates the skins aging process and elevates the risk of skin cancers, including melanoma, the deadliest form."A pattern that produces shapes might look cool in a photo, but it can create dangerous UV hotspots and the damage is cumulative," cautioned the doctor, who is also the founder of the Dr. Rossi skincare line.'OLD PEOPLE SMELL' IS REAL, EXPERTS SAY HERE'S HOW TO AVOID IT AS YOU AGERossi shared how many of his older patients recall the days of using iodine, baby oil and sun reflectors to tan and now they are dealing with the consequences."I regularly see patients who had frequent tanning whether via booths or exposure during adolescence," he said. "By their 30s and 40s, many of them already presented with pre-cancerous lesions or actual skin cancers.""These can lead to multiple surgeries, scars and melanoma, which can metastasize and be fatal."Dr. Sara Moghaddam, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who practices at Delmarva Skin Specialists in Selbyville, Delaware, noted that the sunburn tattoo trend is concerning and significantly increases the risk of future skin cancer in teenagers."Experiencing five or more blistering sunburns between the ages of 15 and 20 can increase an individual's melanoma risk by 80%,"Moghaddam told Fox News Digital. When a sunburn occurs, the UV radiation damages the DNA within skin cells, which leads to mutations that can cause cells to grow uncontrollably, potentially leading to skin cancer, she said. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) confirms that every time the skin tans, it sustains some degree of damage."As this damage builds, you speed up the aging of your skin and increase your risk for all types of skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer," the AADs website states. Both dermatologists said a spray tan may be a safer alternative to achieving a temporary "tan tattoo" look."Spray tans utilize dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar that reacts with amino acids in the skin's top layer, to create a temporary brown color,"Moghaddam said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER"There's no evidence that DHA from spray tans is harmful; the color simply fades as the skin naturally exfoliates."Rossi cautioned, however, that spray tans come with some risk if inhaled improperly. He also warned that they dont protect against future burns. To protect the skin from sun damage and reduce skin cancer risk, the AAD recommends seeking shade when possible, especially if "your shadow is shorter than you," and to be mindful that the suns peak hours are between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.A sun protection routine should include using broad-spectrum sunscreen and wearing UV-protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, when outdoors, experts advise. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/healthRossi added, "UV damage is insidious its not just about the short-lived image, but the lifelong consequence."

Conan O'Brien foresees the end of late-night TV, predicts bold prediction on Stephen Colbert's future
Conan O'Brien said late night television is dying but made bold predictions about "The Late Show" host Stephen Colberts future during an award acceptance speech Saturday.O'Brien, known for his "Late Night" and "Tonight Show" hosting stints on NBC from 1993 to 2010, also hosted the TBS talk show "Conan," which aired for nearly eleven years. He made the remarks during his induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame on Saturday."Yes, late-night television, as we have known it since around 1950, is going to disappear. But those voices are not going anywhere. People likeStephen Colbertare too talented and too essential to go away," O'Brien said. "Stephen is going to evolve and shine brighter than ever in a new format that he controls completely."Colbert took over "The Late Show" on CBS from former host David Letterman in 2015, but the gig has an expiration date. CBS announced that "The Late Show" will be canceled effective May 2026 with no replacement host being selected for the program. Many supporters of Colbert have claimed his show was canceled because he was a frequent critic of President Donald Trump and parent company Paramount was trying to curry favor with the Trump administration in order to get approval for a company merger.WASHINGTON POST, NY TIMES COLUMNS INSIST COLBERT CANCELATION IS DUE TO OBSOLETE FORMAT, NOT POLITICSTrump sued Paramount, claiming that CBSs "60 Minutes" engaged in election interference by deceptively editing an interview with thenVice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election. Paramount settled with Trump, which led to Colbert joking that the $16 million settlement Paramount paid to the former president was a "big fat bribe.""I believe that this kind of complicated financial settlement with a sitting government official has a technical name in legal circles, its big fat bribe." Colbert joked. However, CBS execs denied that Colbert was canceled for his politics, and instead pointed to the financial losses the show was incurring. "The Late Show" reportedly cost network $40 million a year as audiences flee traditional television in favor of streaming.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREO'Brien, a former writer for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," waxed philosophical about the future of television during his speech. He struck an optimistic tone that television would endure no matter how new technologies roil the industry, so long as creators are "brave and of goodwill.""Technology can do whatever they want. It can make television a pill. It can make television shows a high-protein, chewable, vanilla-flavored capsule with added fiber. It still wont matter, if the stories are good, if the performances are honest and inspired, if the people making it are brave and of goodwill," he said.

US envoy nears Lebanon-Israel ceasefire that would disarm Hezbollah terror group
Tom Barrack, the U.S. special envoy to Lebanon, said Monday that his team would discuss a possible ceasefire agreement with Israel, after Beirut endorsed a U.S.-backed plan for the Hezbollah terrorist group to disarm.Barrack, following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, also said Washington would seek an economic proposal for post-war reconstruction in the country, after months of shuttle diplomacy between the U.S. and Lebanon.
