Parents defend using push-ups and squats as punishment in viral video
Katie and Dustin Maletich, Oregon parents of four, have gone viral on social media for a parenting moment thats sparked some debate. After Dustins 9-year-old stepson, Tommy, told his mother to "chill," he was instructed to do several push-ups and 60 squats as a form of discipline. The workout was met with a father-son conversation about the tone in which he should be speaking to his mother. Tommy was attentive and apologized to his mom.STEPDAD PUNISHES BOY'S DISRESPECT WITH PUSHUPS AND SQUATS IN VIRAL VIDEODustin Maletich, who is a corrections officer at a prison, ended the confrontation with an "I love you" and a hug. While some praised the stepfather for his approach, others were concerned about using physical exercise as a form of punishment.Dr. Dyan Hes, pediatrician and medical director at Highline Modern Medicine in New York, reacted to this discipline method in an interview with Fox News Digital, calling it a "ridiculous punishment.""If you have ever done 60 squats, you know it is painful, especially in a young prepubescent child," she said. "Regardless, this is still a form of corporal punishment. Exercise should invoke positive connotations, not negative ones."GRANDMOTHER'S RESPONSE TO MOM 'GIVING IN' TO TODDLER AT DINNER SPARKS HEATED DEBATEEducational psychologist and parenting expert Dr. Michele Borba shared a different perspective, stating that the stepfather approached it the "right way" by responding calmly and enforcing a punishment that seemed familiar and doable for the child. The California-based expert was more concerned about how posting the video online could emotionally impact the child and invoke "public shame."In an on-camera interview with Fox News Digital, the Maletich family shared that fitness isnt used as a punishment for their children, but as a method of teaching self-control and emotional regulation. (See the video at the top of the article.)"It's never like, We're punishing you because you were bad,'" Katie Maletich said. "It's, Hey, let's help you figure out some better self-control and a better outlet for whatever is going on."FAMILY VACATION DRAMA ERUPTS OVER GRANDMOTHER'S REQUEST FOR DINNER WITH HER GROWN KIDS ONLYDustin Maletich added, "We try to have the consequences correlate with the inappropriate behavior. If you demonstrate the inability to control your actions, then by doing physical activity, you're showing yourself that you are in control of your actions.""There are plenty of times that I get frustrated," he went on. "I can't lash out at my boss. I cant yell at somebody. I cant throw a tantrum. That's not the way the world works."The couple shared that their oldest daughter, who is 13, chooses to walk or jog if her emotions are feeling out of control, before engaging in a conversation with her parents."[Our daughter] said, I don't want to have a sit-down conversation with you when I'm cranky, but when she goes jogging on the treadmill, she said she finds that afterward, she's able to better communicate her feelings because she's more centered," Katie Maletich said."Our kids like working out. They don't do it every day, but I think overall they enjoy it, because it's such a central part of our home."Fitness is a "positive bonding experience" for the Maletichs, she said. "They feel better, and they voice it afterward They're happier, they're less frustrated. And so, to us, we see that as a win."This approach to discipline can differ for each child and circumstance, the Maletichs shared, which involves "intention and intuition.""The biggest thing is just learning to respond as a parent rather than reacting," Katie said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERThe couples approach to parenting is "were not raising kids, were raising adults," Dustin shared."I think putting more focus on how our kids are going to be able to handle life when they're adults is more important than figuring out how to make them happy and comfortable right now," Katie said. For other parents, Katie noted that physical activity has worked "really well" when followed by "connection and conversation."For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/health"That's a really essential part of this," she said. "You have to explain it to them afterward and make sure that connection, both emotionally and to the issue and consequence, is there."The couple also responded to the backlash they received after posting the video, mentioning that they asked their son for consent before sharing it. He responded with hopes that it would go viral.

Racial discrimination lawsuit against NFL and teams can go to trial, court rules
A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores' lawsuit against the NFL for racial discrimination can go to trial. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan upheld Judge Valerie Capronis previous ruling that Flores can proceed with claims against the league and the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Houston Texans. The ruling rejected the leagues attempt to force Flores into arbitration, which would have had Commissioner Roger Goodell serve as the arbitrator.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe NFL responded via spokesperson Brian McCarthy."We respectfully disagree with the panels ruling and will be seeking further review," his statement said.Flores sued the NFL and multiple teams in 2022, claiming the league was "rife with racism," particularly in its hiring and promotion of Black coaches. Two other coaches later joined the lawsuit, which seeks to proceed as a class action, although Caproni ruled that their claims could go to arbitration based on the language in contracts they signed with teams.Flores is the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings after working previously as a coach for the New England Patriots, from 2008 to 2018; the Miami Dolphins, from 2019 to 2021; and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022. He joined the Vikings in 2023.VIKINGS HAVE HISTORY ON THEIR 2025 SCHEDULEIn a decision written by Circuit Judge Jose A. Cabranes, the appeals court said the NFLs arbitration rules forcing Flores to submit his claims to arbitration before Goodell do not have the protection of the Federal Arbitration Act because it "provides for arbitration in name only."The 2nd Circuit said the NFL constitutions arbitration provision "contractually provides for no independent arbitral forum, no bilateral dispute resolution, and no procedure.""Instead, it offends basic presumptions of our arbitration jurisprudence" by forcing claims to be decided by the NFLs "principal executive officer," the appeals court said.Douglas H. Wigdor and David E. Gottlieb, lawyers representing Flores, said in a statement that the NFL has relied on a biased and unfair arbitration process for too long."This ruling sends a clear message: that practice must end," they said.Caproni said in a March 2023 decision that descriptions by the coaches of their experiences of racial discrimination in a league with a "long history of systematic discrimination toward Black players, coaches, and managers are incredibly troubling.""Although the clear majority of professional football players are Black, only a tiny percentage of coaches are Black," she said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Make-up brand apologizes for ad featuring comedian who made controversial joke two years ago
Cosmetics brand e.l.f. apologized on Wednesday after social media users slammed it for using stand-up comic Matt Rife in a recent ad.After the brand published the ad on social media platforms earlier this week, online users, including prominent make-up influencers, ripped e.l.f. for using Rife, who made an unpopular joke about domestic violence in 2023. The brand responded with an apology."You know us, we're always listening and we've heard you. This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty injustice, we understand we missed the mark with people we care about in our e.l.f community," the company stated in a post on its official Instagram page.SYDNEY SWEENEY'S BROTHER MAKES CHEEKY 'GOOD JEANS' JOKE AFTER HIS AIR FORCE PROMOTION"While e.l.f.ino & schmarness closes today, we'll continue to make the case against overpriced beauty (red heart emoji)," e.l.f. continued, suggesting theyre done with Rife being part of the ad campaign. The make-up brands controversial ad featured Rife and drag queen "Heidi N Closet" as "E.l.f.ino & Schmarnes," a spoof lawyer duo in a legal commercial fighting for consumers rights to inexpensive cosmetic products. The ad, published across major social media platforms, generated outrage among online users, particularly on Instagram and TikTok."You didnt have the budget for a comedian who doesnt joke about abuse?" one user asked on the Instagram post.SYDNEY SWEENEY'S SHOOTING SKILLS GO VIRAL AS SHE MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE SINCE AMERICAN EAGLE CONTROVERSY"Nikkietutorials," a cosmetics influencer with almost 9 million followers on TikTok, commented, "aaaaaaandddd you lost me... Matt Rife out of ALL people? so disappointed."Maddy Lucy Dan, a TikTok user with 1.4 million followers, rehashed the Rife controversy in the posts comments section, writing, "In Matt Rifes Netflix stand-up special Natural Selection he opened with a domestic violence joke, implying a woman wouldnt have a black eye if she could cook."During his 2023 stand-up special, "Natural Selection," Rife told the story of eating at a Baltimore restaurant with a friend when they noticed their female server had a black eye. He explained that the two of them questioned why the restaurant owners wouldn't have the employee work in the kitchen to avoid customers asking questions."Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn't have a black eye," Rife joked. The joke outraged people online at the time, but rather than apologize, the comic doubled down, putting out a statement that directed social media users to a link offering an "apology" if they had ever been offended by a joke he told. The link brought users to a website where they could purchase special-needs helmets.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTURERifes e.l.f. controversy happened days after actress Sydney Sweeney was berated online for her latest American Eagle jeans ad, which featured the tagline, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans."Social media users and mainstream media outlets linked the tagline to the "eugenics movement" and accused the ad campaign of promoting "Whiteness."However, while e.l.f. apologized for featuring Rife following backlash, American Eagle didnt apologize for its ad with Sweeney. Though the brand did remove it from its social media accounts. In a statement, the fashion brand defended the ad, stating, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans," the statement said. Trump authorized to control DC police indefinitely under House GOP proposal
A House Republican wants to allow President Donald Trump to extend his takeover of Washington, D.C.s police force for as long as he wants.Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., is working on a resolution that would rewrite the Home Rule Act, the law that Trump is using to take control of the districts Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and do away with barriers that limit just how long the president can oversee the local police agency.Ogles charged that "the only way to save it is to federalize the District.""President Trump has already stepped up using the emergency powers granted under the D.C. Home Rule Act but the 30-day limit in current law is nowhere near enough to undo the chaos Democrats have unleashed," he told Fox News Digital. "My resolution will give the President all the time and authority he needs to crush lawlessness, restore order, and reclaim our capital once and for all."REPUBLICANS READY TO SUPPORT TRUMP'S MOVE TO SKIRT CONGRESS IN DC CRIME CRACKDOWNTrump on Monday declared a crime emergency in the nations Capitol and invoked a section of the Home Rule Act that governs the district to give himself the authority to take control of the local police. He has since sent in National Guard troops, alongside FBI and DEA agents, to patrol the streets of Washington D.C.But the provision, known as Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, only allows for the president to effectively federalize the local police force for up to 30 days unless Congress, through a joint resolution, grants him an extension. And Ogles resolution seeks to change that by removing the 30-day time limit.TOP HOUSE REPUBLICAN SAYS TRUMP 'RIGHTLY' TOOK OVER DC POLICE, DEMANDS BOWSER, OTHERS TESTIFY ON CRIMEInstead, the president would have to notify the House Oversight and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees each time he wants to extend his control of the police force something Trump had to do already to prevent his grip on the MPD from lapsing after 48 hours. And that authority would continue unless Congress passed a joint resolution calling for an end to his control of the D.C. police.VIOLENT ATTACK REIGNITES BOWSER ACT DEBATE AS TRUMP FLOATS FEDERAL TAKEOVER OF DCOgles legislation is part of his broader push to repeal the Home Rule Act. Indeed, he and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, have a bill called the Bringing Oversight to Washington and Safety to Every Resident (BOWSER) Act, named after D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, that would repeal the decades-old law and return control of the city to Congress.Meanwhile, Trump has already floated leapfrogging Congress to extend his hold on the police given that a joint resolution would likely require at least 60 votes in the Senate to pass. While some Republicans have come out in support of the president, Senate Democrats are ready to push back against granting Trump more control over the district."No f--- way," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told podcaster Aaron Parnas on his show, "The Parnas Perspective.""Well fight him tooth and nail. He needs to get Congress to approve it, and not only are we not going to approve it, but there are some Republicans who dont like it either," he continued.

Los Angeles mayor calls federal authorities source of 'disorder' after ICE raid outside Gov. Newsom event
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Thursday lashed out against federal authorities, calling them the source of "disorder" in the city after agents were spotted patrolling outside a museum where California Gov. Gavin Newsom was holding a press conference to address the state's plan to redraw congressional maps.Bass showed up in the city's Little Tokyo neighborhood where federal agents were present outside the event at the Japanese American National Museum and made at least one arrest."Donald Trump, you think it's coincidental? Donald Trump and his minions, Tom Homan, tough guy, decided coincidentally or not, that this was a location to advance ICE arrests," Newsom said about the operations outside the press conference. "I think it's pretty sick and pathetic."LA MAYOR BASS PROVIDES CASH PAYMENTS TO ILLEGALS, ISSUES ORDER TO THWART IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENTBass, who has harshly criticized the Trump administration for conducting raids to arrest illegal immigrants in the city, showed up to the scene and questioned the timing of the operation."There is no way this was a coincidence. This was widely publicized that the governor and many of our other elected officials were having a press conference here to talk about redistricting, and they decided they were going to come and thumb their nose in front of the governor's face," a charged-up Bass said, calling it a "provacative act.""They're talking about disorder in Los Angeles and they are the source of the disorder," she added. "This is an administration, this is a Customs and Border Patrol that has gone amok."Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House, as well as U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).LA MAYOR RIPPED FOR INTERFERING WITH ICE RAID AT CRIME-RIDDEN LOCAL PARK: 'FULL OF S---'Bill Essayli, the acting U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, which covers Los Angeles, responded to Bass' comment on social media."The Mayor and other California officials are under the false impression that they are an actual sanctuary from federal law," he wrote on X. "No person or state is above the law. Federal agents will operate anywhere and anytime within the United States."The Trump administration has drawn the ire of Bass and Newsom for ongoing raids in and around Los Angeles in an effort to catch and deport illegal immigrants with criminal records. In July, Bass showed up at the city's troubled MacArthur Park when federal agents conducted a sweep of illegal immigrants, calling it "outrageous" and "un-American.""Our law enforcement operations are about enforcing the lawnot about Gavin Newsom," Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital in a statement. "CBP patrols all areas of Los Angeles every day with over 40 teams on the ground to make LA safe."Gregory Bovino, the chief patrol agent for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) El Centro sector, said Thursday's operation was about public safety."Los Angeles is a safer place.Since we won't have politicians that will do that, we do that ourselves," he told Fox News. "So that's why we're here today, as you can see, already making it a safer place. We're glad to be here, not going anywhere."Thursday's press conference was centered on the battle over congressional redistricting ahead of next year's midterm elections. Newsom and fellow Democrats unveiled their game plan to counter a push by President Donald Trump and Republicans to create up to five GOP-friendly congressional districts in Texas at the expense of currently Democrat-controlled seats."Today is liberation day in the state of California," the governor said. "Donald Trump, you have poked the bear and we will punch back."

Jasmine Crockett proclaims she hates the Heritage Foundation with everything in my in my body
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said that she hates The Heritage Foundation "with everything in my body" during recent remarks she gave during a panel at the Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival."People don'tunderstand how terrible the Heritage Foundation is when I tell you I hate them with everything in my body," Crockett said last week during a panel conversation with MSNBC's Al Sharpton and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.The conversation was advertised as "an inspiring fireside chat, where theyll explore the power of joy as a political act, cultural anchor, and driving force behind justice, storytelling, and community transformation."REP. JASMINE CROCKETT CALLS TRUMP A 'PIECE OF S---' DURING LIBERAL RALLYDuring Crockett's remarks about hating The Heritage Foundation, Pressley interjected, saying, "Project 2025, they laid it all out," appearing to refer to a list of policy recommendations put forth by various conservative organizations, including The Heritage Foundation.Crockett then went out to blast The Heritage Foundations work."So, Heritage Foundation has been around for a very long time," Crockett said. "And yes, we became familiar with Project 2025. We probably became familiar a little too late, but nevertheless, other work that theydid and other work that they're doing is something that we don't do. One of the things that they do is they constantly are doing polling, but besides doing polling, they do focus groups."She also voiced her disapproval ofheartbeat bill legislation that makes it illegal to have an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.CROCKETT CLAIMS REPUBLICAN OPPONENTS WOULD THROW HER 'BACK IN CHAINS'The Supreme Courts June 2022Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization decision ended the recognition that abortion is a constitutional right and gave the states the power to determine what their abortion laws would be.Crockett said The Heritage Foundation is using focus groups to change public opinion."But what they did is, they were listening to these focus groups, and they were trying to figure out how can we get people emotionally aroused," Crockett said. She then said The Heritage Foundation is operating similar to a car dealership."And it's just like when you think about when you're going in to buy a car knowing you don't need that car but it smells good, it look good, you get real emotional," Crockett said. "And we actually have laws in most states that allow for you to come down from the high and allow you to take that car back. So when we allow ourselves to just get very emotional, then all logic is out the window."
