Alex Murdaugh appeal challenging murder convictions faces state pushback over jury influence claims
The South Carolina Attorney General's Office has officially submitted its response to Alex Murdaughs appeal challenging his convictions for the murders of his wife and son.In a 182-page brief filed before the Aug. 8 deadline, Attorney General Alan Wilsons office dismantles Murdaughs December appeal, which claims that Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill swayed jurors to boost sales of her forthcoming book. The filing is the States first full rebuttal to Murdaughs bid for a new trial. In the filing, obtained by Greenville News, prosecutors argued that the jury found Murdaugh guilty based on the "overwhelming" evidence, not because of Hills brief and "foolish" comments about his testimony.NEW TEXT MESSAGES FUEL ALEX MURDAUGH'S PUSH FOR NEW TRIALProsecutors also said Murdaugh forfeited the right to challenge the financial crimes evidence by not appealing the trial courts decision to admit it.Wilsons team had initially requested more time to reply, citing the complexity and size of the case, including a 6,000-page trial transcript and significant evidence that needed review.Dick Harpootlian, a Columbia attorney and former state senator who led Murdaughs defense, previously told Fox News Digital that Hills conduct compromised the trial. According to Harpootlian, Hill's actions potentially cost Murdaugh a fair verdict.BUSTER MURDAUGH SCORES LEGAL WIN IN DEFAMATION FIGHT OVER DOCUMENTARYS MURDER IMPLICATIONS: FORMER STATE AG"If she had left the jury alone, clearly the worst we would have done was a mistrial," Harpootlian said, adding that two jurors would have voted differently if not for Hills influence. The defense also disputed that the jury should not have heard evidence related to Murdaughs financial misconduct.ALEX MURDAUGH TRIAL: EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON POSSIBILITY OF AN OVERTURNED MURDER CONVICTIONThe disgraced attorney was convicted in March 2023 of the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, who were fatally shot on June 7, 2021, at the familys hunting property in Colleton County. He was also found guilty of two weapons charges related to the killings.Murdaughs team has 30 days to answer the attorney generals brief. Once both sides finish, the state Supreme Court will set oral arguments, likely later this fall, with a decision expected next spring.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPMurdaugh, 56, who continues to maintain his innocence, is serving two consecutive life terms in state prison.Fox News Digital reached out to Wilson's office, but did not receive a response.Fox News Digital's Sarah Rumpf-Whitten and Peter D'Abrsosca contributed to this report.

FBI Director Kash Patel backs Trump's DC police takeover: 'When you let good cops be cops, they deliver'
FBI Director Kash Patel endorsed President Donald Trump's plans to take over the Metropolitan Police Department to tackle crime in Washington D.C., amid heavy criticism from Democrats and local officials who say the move is part of a power grab.Patel was seen Monday afternoon inside a command post for the first night of the temporary takeover in a show of support for law enforcement."Proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the men and women who keep our nations capital safe," Patel said in an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital. "When you let good cops be cops, give them the tools they need, and back them every step of the way, they deliver - every time."In photos exclusively provided to Fox News Digital, Patel can be seen speaking Monday to FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel wearing protective vests at a command center at a U.S. Park Police station.TOP DEMOCRATS RIPPED ON SOCIAL MEDIA OVER 'BONKERS' REACTIONS TO TRUMP'S DC CRIME PLAN: 'MASSIVE LIAR'On Monday, Trump said he would federalize the police department and place it under the authority of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in an effort to address crime. He also said he was activating approximately 800 National Guard troops to "reestablish law, order and public safety" in the capital.Washington D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move "unsettling and unprecedented.""While this action today is unsettling and unprecedented, I cant say that given some of the rhetoric of the past, that were totally surprised," Bowser said during a news conference. "I can say to D.C. residents that we will continue to operate our government in a way that makes you proud."TRUMP'S PLAN TO DEPLOY NATIONAL GUARD IN DC SPARKS BACKLASH FROM RESIDENTSBUT SOME WELCOME ITThe District of Columbia Home Rule Act allows Trump to place the city's police department under federal control for up to 30 days. Bowser noted that granting D.C. statehood, an issue local officials have repeatedly advocated for, could have prevented the takeover."If people are concerned about the president being able to move the National Guard into our city, the time to do that would have been when the Congress had a bill that it could have given control of the D.C. National Guard to D.C.," she said. "So there are things that, when a city is not a state, and not fully autonomous, and doesnt have senators, that the federal government can do."Other Democrats heavily criticized the Trump administration for the move."If President Trump wants to help make Chicago safer, he can start by releasing the funds for anti-violence programs that have been critical to our work to drive down crime and violence," the office of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said. "Sending in the national guard would only serve to destabilize our city and undermine our public safety efforts."The Washington, D.C. City Council called the temporary takeover a "manufactured intrusion on local authority."TRUMP CLAIMS DC CRIMES TROUNCE STATS FROM NOTORIOUSLY VIOLENT CITIES WORLDWIDE"Violent crime in the District is at the lowest rates weve seen in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unwarranted because there is no Federal emergency," the council said in a joint statement. "Further, the National Guard has no public safety training or knowledge of local laws. The Guards role does not include investigating or solving crimes in the District. Calling out the National Guard is an unnecessary deployment with no real mission."The National Capital Region Delegation, a body comprised of several House Democratic lawmakers, accused Trump of personally inciting crime in the capital, referring to the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol building."Trumps temporary takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department is not intended to prevent crime, it is a soft launch of authoritarianism," the group said in a statement. "Trump has a longstanding pattern of seeking showy displays of power. As he has shown repeatedly, Trump is working to serve himself and is not concerned with keeping American families safe in cities and towns across our country.""The Presidents announcement this morning is an unserious and unacceptable publicity stunt," they added. "If he wants to reduce crime in the District of Columbia, he should focus on getting his Republican allies in Congress to restore the funding they arbitrarily stripped out of the citys budget, which risks cuts to law enforcementand other public safety measures."Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, called Trump's announcement a "gross overreach, disconnected from actual conditions on the ground.""So, we have to ask: Will the presidents heavy-handed show of force make the average D.C. resident feel safer? Will it create jobs for working people and bring patrons back to downtown businesses?" she said. "Will it provide young people a pathway to jobs, skills or other activities that keep them off the streets?""The answer to those questions is no, she added. "Thats why this move is yet another crass spectacle from a president who cares more about targeting, intimidating and playing king than the safety of D.C. and its residents."Trump's opponents have cited crime statistics showing crime in Washington is on the decline. Crime in Washington is down 26% this year compared to the same timeframe in 2024, according to the MPD. Assaults with a dangerous weapon are down 20%, and homicides are down by 12%, according to police data. In January, the Justice Department said violent crime in 2024 in the district was down 35% from 2023, the lowest it has been in over 30 years. However, Trump disagrees.Metropolitan Police Department data shows that while the homicide rate is falling, the last five years saw the greatest number of murders since 2008."The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, some of the places that you hear about as being the worst places on Earth, much higher," Trump said Monday. "This is much higher. The number of car thefts has doubled over the past five years, and the number of carjackings has more than tripled. Murders in 2023 reached the highest rate, probably ever. They say 25 years, but they don't know what that means because it just goes back 25 years can't be worse."Fox News Digital's Andrew Mark Miller contributed to this report.

Deep blue city attracts tens of thousands for largest Christian revival event in decades
A major Christian revival event in Portland, Oregon this month drew one of the city's largest faith-based gatherings in decades. The PDX Crusade, hosted by Athey Creek Church in partnership with other churches, welcomed 35,000 attendees to the Moda Center in Portland on August 2-3, according to event organizers. The two-night gathering featured gospel messages and worship by popular Christian artists Chris Tomlin, Zach Williams, CAIN, TAYA, Anne Wilson, Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes. The church reported that 3,200 people came forward during the altar calls. Volunteers distributed Bibles and connected new believers with local churches, according to a CBN report. The event was one of the most significant evangelical gatherings Portland has seen in decades. In 2020, an outdoor worship protest during the height of coronavirus restrictions drew between 4,000 and 7,000 people. Prior to that, the late evangelist Luis Palau hosted large festivals in Portland that combined music with food and preaching. His 1999 festival reportedly reached over 90,000 people.PDX Crusade attendees, like Portland resident Laura Lybrand, were in awe of the turnout.SEATTLE PASTOR DETAILS WILD SCENE AFTER WORSHIP EVENT 'SWARMED' BY PROTESTERS"Im really excited about it," she told Oregon Public Broadcasting as she stood in line for the event. "I havent seen anything like this in a long, long time."Athey Creek senior pastor Brett Meador delivered Gospel sermons each night of the crusade in which he addressed the citys struggles with homelessness, crime and lack of faith, according to the OPB report."Why is there so much darkness here?" Meador said to the crowd. "I believe its because we have often pushed Jesus the real light of the world out."According to the Pew Research Centers 20232024 Religious Landscape Study, the PortlandVancouver metro area is the only one of the 34 largest U.S. metropolitan regions where religiously unaffiliated people outnumber those identifying as Christian (44% to 42%).Meador, who moved to Portland in 1996 because it was considered the most irreligious city in America, views the region as ripe for revival.CHICAGO'S 'ROOFTOP PASTOR' TO EMBARK ON EPIC CROSS-COUNTRY JOURNEY TO BENEFIT AMERICA'S TROUBLED YOUTHThe pastor previously decried the city's "stupidity, wokeness and failure," in a sermon in July, according to the report, after the Oregon House of Representatives hosted a drag performance to celebrate Pride month. He hoped the PDX Crusade will be a catalyst for a spiritual awakening in the secular city."I believe the Lords doing a great work in Portland, and its evident here tonight," Meador said, according to KLove. "But we have more work to do and thats why its important for us to declare that He is the light of the world."Some attendees suggested that the Pacific Northwest may be on the verge of a broader religious revival."Ive just seen a number of different people over these last few months and years that are moving from different areas to the [Willamette] Valley, because they feel like theres some sort of revival taking place," said Brandon Porter of Newberg, also speaking to OPB. "They feel like Gods called them here."CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREAthey Creek Executive Pastor Rick Anderson said that leadership is now considering whether to continue the crusade as an annual tradition."If the city of Portland reflects back and recognizes that this was a catalyst for reviving the church and really bringing the love of Jesus to a lost and desperate world, were going to consider that a success," Anderson told OPB.The Portland crusade followed another large religious revival event in Los Angeles in July.Around 45,000 people packed Angel Stadium to attend pastor and evangelist Greg Lauries Harvest Crusade on July 19. Harvest Church said it was the second consecutive year the stadium had been packed out for the event and an additional 200,000 people watched the crusade online.

US Attorney Pirro says administration wont tolerate out of control crime in the nations capital
Jeanine Pirro, the United States attorney for the District of Columbia, said President Donald Trumps decision to place the D.C. police under temporary federal control and deploy the National Guard to the nations capital was a first step toward cracking down on crime."We are now in the process of bringing to the attention of law-abiding citizens, not just in D.C., but throughout the country, that we're not going to tolerate crime that isout of control in the nation's capital," she said Monday on "Hannity.""This is the shining city on the hill that our forefathers talked about. This is the place where Ronald Reagan talked about looking up to. And in the end, it is an incredibly violent area."Pirro, a former Fox News co-host, joined Trump and other top administration officials at the White House briefing room when the commander-in-chief announced the changes and a surge in federal law enforcement.TOP DEMOCRATS RIPPED ON SOCIAL MEDIA OVER 'BONKERS' REACTIONS TO TRUMP'S DC CRIME PLAN: 'MASSIVE LIAR'Trump wrote onhis Truth Social account that he wants to make the federal district one of the safest cities in the world and called for teenagers as young as 14 to be charged as adults. The comments came after ex-DOGE employee Edward Coristine, nicknamed "Big Balls," was allegedly assaulted during an attempted carjacking. Two 15-year-olds havesince been arrested and face charges of unarmed carjacking in connection with the Coristine attack, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).DC US ATTORNEY SAYS ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AS YOUTH CRIME PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON NATIONS CAPITALPirro told Fox News host Sean Hannity that D.C.s juvenile justice system is focused more on rehabilitation than accountability."We've got an area where criminals are emboldened for a variety of reasons," said the top federal prosecutor."They know these young gangs or, as they're called here, crews they know that if they're 14, 15, 16, or 17, they are below the age of criminal responsibility unless they commit the crime of murder, rape one, armed robbery or burglary in the first degree. And that means if you shoot someone and they don't die, I don't even get the case as a prosecutor."She added: "Unless and until we get our hands on them and unless and until we have the ability to punish them, they are emboldened and they are laughing at us."MPD reported a 7% decrease in overall crime and a 26% reduction in violent crime in Washington, D.C., as of Monday, compared to the same period in 2024.D.C. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth vows to be 'force multipliers' of DC police
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth elaborated on what President Donald Trump has "got the guts" to do, after they announced Monday Washington, D.C.'s police force will be federalized."We're going to work right alongside our law enforcement partners as force multipliers," Hegseth told "The Ingraham Angle."As part of the White Houses efforts to crack down on crime, Trump declared it was "Liberation Day" and officially placed the Washington D.C.s Metropolitan Police Department under federal control. Hegseth also teased 800 National Guard troops will be deployed "in the coming week."TRUMP'S PLAN TO DEPLOY NATIONAL GUARD IN DC SPARKS BACKLASH FROM RESIDENTSBUT SOME WELCOME ITThis comes after recent acts of violence in the capital city made national headlines, including a former DOGE staffer being assaulted and a 21-year-old congressional intern being fatally caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting a mile away from the White House in June."If our capital city is a mess, if we can't control our capital city, then what does the rest of the country look like?" Hegseth asked. When Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked how long the troops will be in the nations capital, Hegseth called their deployment "conditions-based," emphasizing the administration will support all parts of law enforcement to "make sure people who are arrested are actually locked up."TRUMP ACTIVATES NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS TO ADDRESS TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL CRIME IN WASHINGTON"That's why the president's talking about cashless bail and sanctuary cities," Hegseth explained. "If you're illegal here in D.C., that's going to be a problem. So all of these things that apply to law and order are front and center for us."The National Guard could be deployed for weeks or months, but when they should pull out is ultimately the "presidents call," Hegseth added.Hegseth also responded to accusations the Trump administration is acting as "authoritarians" would, insisting these critiques are no different than what he heard when they "quelled the protests of the attacks on ICE officers" in Los Angeles in June.HEGSETH SPARS WITH SENATE DEMOCRATS OVER MARINE DEPLOYMENT TO LA ANTI-ICE RIOTS: 'NOT ABOUT LETHALITY'"I was told, Oh, you're going to lock up political opponents, you're going to go after Democrats, yada yada. It's the same stuff every time. Mischaracterizing our intentions," Hegseth argued. He continued, "The intentions of this president is to establish law and order using legal and lawful and constitutional means, which he completely has, and you know why they don't like him? He's got the guts to do it."In June, President Donald Trump had ordered 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, despite Gov. Gavin Newsoms, D-Calif, strong stance against it.

Trump says he'll know 'in the first two minutes' if Ukraine peace deal is possible with Putin
Tammy Bruce, the State Department spokeswoman, told me in an interview that the president is strategically positioned to stop the fighting in Ukraine."The point is that the killing has to end," she said on "Media Buzz." "And if theres anybody who can confront and deal with and manage Putin, it is Donald Trump."ZELENSKYY URGES DIRECT TALKS WITH PUTIN AS TRUMP SETS PEACE DEADLINEBut what if its Putin whos managing Trump? And how can there be any kind of settlement when Volodymyr Zelenskyy is refusing to participate, saying the Kremlin dictator is trying to deceive America?Trump addressed this yesterday, at his news conference on the feds taking over the D.C. police departmentand lets just say he made a point of lowering expectations. One thing thats impossible to ignore is that whenever Trump threatens sanctions against Moscow, he finds a way to avoid following through. Remember the 50-day deadline? And then the 10-day deadline?Putin has been diplomatically isolated since his illegal invasion of Ukraine, which has featured the deliberate killing of civilians.By inviting him to Alaskawhich America bought from Russia in 1867 and is no longer deemed "Sewards Folly" Trump is granting Putin respect as a legitimate world leader, not a pariah.Putins plan all along has been to make gains on the battlefield and then hold onto all or most of that land in any settlement. Thats why hes continued to intensively bomb Ukraine, killing more civilians, even amid the chatter about peace.Zelenskyy says he cant cede any land because that would violate the countrys constitution. It would also create a political firestorm at home. But a recent poll says 38 percent of Ukrainians are willing to give up some territory to end the war.TRUMP BLASTS ZELENSKYY FOR CONSTITUTIONAL OBJECTION TO 'LAND SWAPPING' IN UKRAINE WARTrump has talked about "some swapping of territories," but Ukraine doesnt have much to swap. The country took over 500 square miles in a surprise attack in the Russian area of Kursk, but that has dwindled to just four square miles and came at the cost of significant casualties. So this could be a repeat of what happened when Russia seized Crimea in 2014. The world was outraged, and then everything went back to normal. As for Putin, Trump told reporters yesterday, "Id have a great call with him and then missiles would be lobbed into Kyiv.""Im going to be telling him to end this war.""I get along with Zelenskyy but I disagree with what hes done."The president said hell try to get some territory back "for the good of Ukraine.""Probably in the first two minutes, Ill know whether a deal can be made."If not, "I may leave and say good luck."Now you might question why Trump is granting Putin an audience on U.S. soil without any previous understanding. The president believes in face-to-face negotiating but it doesnt always work. For all the love letters between him and Kim Jong-un, North Korea never budged on its nuclear program.Trump said of Putin and Zelenskyy, "Ultimately Im going to put the two of them in a room." Well, maybe.Even if Zelenskyy goes to Alaska, or a later meeting with Putin, hes not going to agree to rewarding Russia for its military aggressiveness, giving land "to the occupier," as he put it.. Trump may blame Zelenskyy as the fall guy, but that doesnt get us any closer to peace.Besides, Zelenskyy would understandably want security guarantees. Otherwise, Putin could use a cease-fire to allow his forces to rest and recuperate, then attack again in six months or a yeara replay of the post-Crimea strategy. So much for settling the war in 24 hours. Its a bloody, frustrating, complicated war that has resulted in huge casualties for both sides. But it all stems from an illegal invasion by a dictator who insists that Ukraine has no right to exist.

GOP mocks Democrats with memo about wildly unpopular Project 2026 goals, Dems shoot back
FIRST ON FOX: With an eye to next year's Midterm Elections, the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee (NRCC) is mocking its Democratic counterpart and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for advancing "wildly unpopular" policy proposals as part of their "Project 2026" goals. In response, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is hitting back, accusing Republicans of "desperately attempting to distract from their failed leadership and refusal to get a single thing done for the American people."The NRCC released a memo on Tuesday morning in which it knocked Jeffries for failing to meet a self-imposed deadline to roll out a new vision for America with a Democratic-controlled House. The Hill reported in April that Jeffries committed that "over these next 100 days, House Democrats are going to lay out a blueprint for a better America. And you will see a vision for this countrys future that isnt about Donald Trump. Its all about you."RNC CHAIR SAYS 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL' KEY PART OF GOP'S STRATEGY TO WIN SEATS IN MIDTERM ELECTIONSWith those 100 days having already elapsed, the NRCC published a satirical memo titled "Project 2026," in which they accused the Democrats of being out of step with the American people."Hakeem Jeffries promised a Project 2026 within 100 days of April 30th, and its been over 100 days. Democrats know their agenda is wildly unpopular, and their focus on these issues will cause them to lose yet again," the NRCC said in a statement. In the memo, the NRCC accuses the Democratic Party, "as directed by Leader Jeffries and AOC," of wanting to "move swiftly and unapologetically to return to Joe Bidens America and implement the bold, transformational change our base demands."The memo lays out eight policy proposals they accuse Democrats of wanting to advance, ranging from "Bring Back Wasteful Government Spending and High Crime" to "Open Borders. Full Stop" to "Impeach President Trump. Again. And Again."VANCE WARNS OF 'PENALTY' FOR DEMS WHO OPPOSED THE 'BIG, BEAUTIFUL, BILL' AHEAD OF 2026 MIDTERMSPolicy ideas the NRCC charges Democrats with advancing range from the outlandish, such as "institute a federal Carbon Lifestyle Tax on Americans who dare to own trucks, SUVs, or backyard grills, to ideas that have been pushed by the likes of New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani of launching "pilot programs for government-run grocery stores in underserved neighborhoods."Under economic proposals, the memo charges Democrats of wanting to "expand bloated government programs and bankroll the Green New Deal" and reverse the tax cuts passed under President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the memo states Democrats want to "abolish ICE permanently," "ban border wall construction and tear down existing barriers" and "provide taxpayer-funded healthcare, housing, and legal aid for every undocumented immigrant."The NRCC also takes a jab at Democrats for allegedly wanting to be "More Woke, Less Rational," wanting to "mandate pronouns and DEI training in every school and workplace" and have "no more ads featuring Sydney Sweeney or Shane Gillis."Commenting on the memo, NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella told Fox News Digital, "This is the America Democrats want to build."ZOHRAN MAMDANI IN POSITION TO HELP SOCIALIST PARTY 'SEIZE STATE POWER,' DSA LEADER ADMITS"Higher taxes, open borders, skyrocketing gas prices, no more gas cars, crime in the streets, pronouns before commonsense, and no more freedom. House Republicans are the only thing standing between you and the nightmare of 'Project 2026," said Marinella. In response, Viet Shelton, a spokesperson for the DCCC, shot back, commenting, "Big talk by the party whos betrayed the middle-class so they can suck-up to their billionaire donors.""The Republican agenda is marked by rising costs, lost manufacturing jobs, a Big, Ugly Law that everyone hates, and a string of broken promises," he said, adding, "A tidal wave of recent polling confirms their majority is rapidly slipping away.""Its no wonder House Republicans are desperately attempting to distract from their failed leadership and refusal to get a single thing done for the American people."Fox News Digital reached out to Jeffries office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
