Wash Post columnist says Meta's new community notes fact-checking system 'nowhere near up to the task'
Washington Post columnist Geoffrey A. Fowler argued that Meta's community notes fact-checking system for posts made on Facebook, Instagram and Threads is "nowhere near up to the task" of keeping misinformation off their platforms in a column published on Monday. After four months of participating in Meta's community notes program and drafting over 65 notes, only three of Fowler's proposed notes were published, all while he says people's feeds are "filled with inaccurate information.""Zuckerberg fired professional fact-checkers, leaving users to fight falsehoods with community notes. As the main line of defense against hoaxes and deliberate liars exploiting our attention, community notes appear so far nowhere near up to the task," the columnist asserted.According to Fowler, he did his best to avoid bias in his fact-checking, deliberately drafting notes that "crossed the political spectrum," and voting on other users' contributions.META DELETES 10 MILLION FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS THIS YEAR, BUT WHY?"For example, I suggested notes on a fabricated image of Pam Bondi seen over half a million times, as well as a false claim about the wealth of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seen a quarter of a million times," he reported. "I also voted on dozens of notes drafted by others, rating them helpful or 'not helpful.'"While the columnist conceded that community notes do "have upsides," he noticed some glaring issues with Meta's fact-checking system from the outset."I discovered problems quickly. Sometimes, posts I identified for notes wouldnt accept them because they were written by accounts outside the U.S. (which are excluded from Metas initial program) or had other technical problems. Ive seen notes suggested by others that were low quality, some with more opinions than facts, or that sourced to 'Google it,'" he found. One of the root problems facing Meta's community notes system, according to Fowler, is the "bridging algorithm" used by the platform to determine which notes get published and which get passed over. The formula used in the algorithm requires contributors who have disagreed with each other on past notes to agree that a new note is beneficial.META FACES INCREASING SCRUTINY OVER WIDESPREAD SCAM ADS"In theory, this is a good thing. You dont want to publish notes that contain falsehoods or are simply attacks on particular people or ideas," he noted. "However, agreement is tough to find. Notes I couldnt get published included facts that shouldnt be up for debate, including identifying AI deepfakes. This system also doesnt lend itself to the unique risks of breaking news and fast-moving viral conspiracies."Kolina Koltai, who helped develop community notes at X, said that the algorithm shared between Meta and X is a "very, very conservative system," and is better at avoiding harmful notes rather than ensuring the useful notes actually get published. When Fowler approached Meta with his findings, the social media giant told him that his tests cannot be used to evaluate its community-driven fact-checking system, which has only been active for four months in the United States.CLICK HERE FOR THE LATEST MEDIA AND CULTURE NEWS"Community Notes is a brand new product thats still in the test-and-learn phase, and it takes time to build a robust contributor community. While there are notes continuously publishing across Threads, Instagram and Facebook, not every note will be broadly rated as helpful by the community even if those notes were written by a Washington Post columnist," Meta spokeswoman Erica Sackin told the Post.Meta declined to answer Fowler's questions about how many notes the platform has published, how many users are participating in the program or whether there is data to show the program is actually having an impact, despite the company promising transparency regarding the system. At the end of July, the Washington Post was forced to issue a correction for a story on Meta and fact checking. A note to a piece by outgoing fact-checker Glenn Kessler conceded, "A previous version of this column incorrectly said that Meta allowed users to opt out of having posts fact-checked. In fact, Meta allowed users to opt out of seeing fact-checked posts."This was Kessler's final column as a fact-checker. He took a buyout and has yet to be replaced by the Post.

Former Elizabeth Warren foe flips script on her alliance with Mamdani: 'Party of the extreme left'
The New York City mayoral race is having a ripple effect in races throughout the country, including in the open 2026 New Hampshire Senate race.Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who is now seeking the Republican nomination in the Granite State, took a shot at Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani and his former opponent, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, for their joint press conference earlier this week, where she said that Mamdani is "the guy who's walking the walk right now.""Lets be crystal clear. So, New York is our financial capital of the world. It's a great city. I used to live there," Bown said in an interview with Fox News Digital."You look who's supporting them, AOC, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, it's the party of the extreme left who want open border sanctuary cities," he added.DEM DISORDER: DNC SQUABBLES PLAY OUT IN NYC MAYORAL RACE FOR ALL TO SEE"I've tied Chris Pappas in because when asked directly whether he supports him or not, he wouldn't answer the question. And it's clear by his votes that he basically agrees with AOC and Bernie Sanders on all the things we talked about, and that's so far out of touch with the people of New Hampshire," he said of his likely Democratic opponent, Rep. Chris Pappas.Brown ran a digital ad in June dubbed "Comrade Chris" depicting Pappas alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani."Scott Brown is pathetic in terms of how he's running this campaign," Pappas said. "Folks here in New Hampshire know that I'm a New Hampshire Democrat. I'm someone who works across the aisle," Pappas told WMUR when asked if he wants to see Mamdani win and about being tied to the far left mayoral candidate. "The fact is, I dont know whats gonna go on in New York City. What Im focused on is whats happening right here in New Hampshire."'COMRADE CHRIS' REPUBLICANS AIM TO ANCHOR MAMDANI TO DEMOCRATS ACROSS THE COUNTRY"Republicans have spent tens of millions of dollars running attack ads against me through the years trying to paint me as someone that Im not," the Democrat said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital."We have the first in the nation primary, and if this guy wins [the mayors race], then he will be up here campaigning for all these other Democrats, and they will be pushed in so extreme, so far to the left, that the people in New Hampshire will see right through it," he said of Mamdani. "They do not want his brand of socialism and extremism, antisemitism, bigotry pushed to New Hampshire," Brown added."But the difference between [Warren] and Chris Pappas is that she believes what she believes, and she'll let you know. When you ask Chris Pappas a question about him or other policies, where do you stand on blank [] he's [gives] this big convoluted answer," Brown said.REPUBLICANS RELENTLESSLY USE MAMDANI AS SOCIALIST CUDGEL TO BASH VULNERABLE DEMOCRATS"He can't answer a question, and he doesn't have strong beliefs on issues. He's basically a follower. He follows the leadership," he added. In 2010, Brown became the first Republican senator Massachusetts had in decades. He told Fox News Digital this week that "the energy feels like 2010," harkening back to when he won the special election at the time. The win was considered a major early success of the Tea Party movement. He later lost to Warren in the 2012 election.

Columbia student says Mamdani becoming mayor would be scary for Jewish students in New York
A Jewish student at Columbia University is speaking out against New York City Democratic Socialist and mayoralfrontrunner Zohran Mamdani, telling Fox News Digital a Mamdani victory would be "scary" for Jewish students at Columbia and across the city.TJ Katz, a sophomore at the Ivy League school, sat down with Fox to discuss how Mamdani leadingNew York City might impact Columbia and other universities, as the 33-year-old assemblyman and mayoral candidate leads the pack in the race."For my own beliefs and my own safety on campus, it's scary," Katz told Fox. "I think that as an individual serving as the mayor of New York, I don't think he'll, all of a sudden, turn this in a 180-degree direction where I'm going to be on the streets worried that my mayor is against me for who I am."MAMDANI VOWS TO BE DONALD TRUMPS WORST NIGHTMARE AS PRESIDENT WEIGHS WORKING WITH RIVAL IN NYC MAYOR RACE"What I'm far more worried about is if he takes such a weak approach in condemning hate, that will then inspire others to go on and do terrible things," Katz added.Mamdani, a practicing Twelver Shia Muslim born in Kampala, Uganda, won an upset Democratic primary election in June, defeatingformer New York governor Andrew Cuomo among other candidates. As the race stands today, Cuomo, now running as an independent, and sittingMayor Eric Adams will face off with Mamdani in the November election.New York City makes up the largest population of practicing Jews outside the nation of Israel. And Katz described Mamdanis attitude toward the community as "definitely worrisome."NYC MAYOR FLIPS SCRIPT ON MAMDANI AMID SCRAMBLE TO WALK BACK ANTI-POLICE RHETORIC"For him not to protect the Jewish population of New York, which makes up such a strong and vibrant element of the community here, it is upsetting and definitely worrisome," Katz continued.Jewish students across the country and young Jewish voters have also shifted toward the Republican Party as candidates like Mamdani are endorsed by longstanding Democrat Senators like Elizabeth Warren. When aFox News reporter asked if socialist candidates like Mamdani were the future of the Democrat Party, Warren replied "you bet."In the 2024 election, President Donald Trump saw adrastic increase in Jewish voters swinging to the GOP.FBI INVESTIGATING 'HORRIFIC ANTISEMITIC ATTACK' ON AMERICAN WHO SERVED IN ISRAELI ARMYThe Israel on Campus Coalition (ICC) recently hosted a national convention in Washington DC, which saw the largest collection of youngpro-Israel voters this year. Hundreds of Jewish students from across the county flocked to nonpartisan event, voicing concerns about campus safety for Jews as we head into the upcoming school year.A senior advisor to the ICC spoke to Fox News Digital, saying that there is a clear shift toward pro-Israel, conservative beliefs as Trump mitigates a volatile war in the Middle East andnegotiates deals with top universities to combat the rise of antisemitism. The ICC advisor also said students are more active than ever when it comes to standing up for pro-Israel beliefs on campus.ANTI-ISRAEL ACTIVIST MAHMOUD KHALIL CLAIMS OCT. 7 TERROR ATTACK WAS DESPERATE ATTEMPT FOR GAZA TO BE HEARDKatz agreed with the notion that pro-Israeli students are seemingly more outspoken on campus and said Jewish students take their beliefs into account when voting at the polls."I think there's no doubt from the most liberal young Jewish voter that exists all the way to the most conservative, that everyone sort of felt a little bit of this shift to the right," Katz told Fox.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"If one administration versus another is going to actually put the proof in the pudding and show that they're going to come out, they're going to make sure that Jewish students on campuses, Jewish people in every aspect of their life feel safe, then that's undoubtedly where the Jewish voters are going to shift towards," Katz added.Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani but did not receive a response in time for publication.

California launches redistricting fight to nullify Texas GOP plan, with Dems poised to gain 5 seats
As the controversy surrounding Texass redistricting efforts still rages, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday that the Golden State will move forward with a plan for a special election in early November to place its own redistricting plan on a ballot measure before voters.Newsom said the move was a counterpunch to Texas and was being done in a transparent fashion, but would also likely see Democrats pick up five seats if the measure is adopted. The plan would allow Democrats to temporarily bypass the states independent redistricting commission and adopt a new congressional map ahead of the 2026 elections."We are talking about emergency measures to respond to whats happening in Texas and we will nullify what happens in Texas," Newsom said at a Friday press conference flanked by several California lawmakers and some Texas Democrats who fled their state.STEVE HILTON: WHY I'M LAUNCHING A LEGAL WAR AGAINST CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS' UNCONSTITUTIONAL POWER GRAB"Well pick up five seats with the consent of the people. And thats the difference between the approach were taking and the approach theyre taking," Newsom continued. "Were doing it on a temporary basis. Were doing it in a fully transparent way and were doing it by asking the people of the state of California for their consent and support."California would be the first Democratic-led state to actively begin the process of passing new congressional district lines ahead of the 2026 midterms in response to Texass redistricting push.Newsom said Democrats have until Aug. 22 to get the measure on the ballot and he railed against President Donald Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in justifying the move."Greg Abbott, who doesn't have the courage, doesn't have the backbone, doesn't have a conscience of the consequences of his actions... is dialing now for new seats," Newsom said Friday, referring to the Texas governors push for a mid-decade redistricting map and a call with President Trump."[Trumps] agenda is failing. His presidency has failed. He knows the headwinds in a midterm. He's dialing for seats now."'ALL-OUT WAR': FLEEING TEXAS DEMS SIDE WITH NEWSOM AS REDISTRICTING STANDOFF CONTINUES: 'FIRE WITH FIRE'Texas Republicans, encouraged by the Trump administration, are pursuing a congressional map aimed at adding up to five GOP-leaning districts, prompting fierce backlash and counteraction.Texas Democratshave fled the Lone Star State to Democrat-stronghold states to break quorum and halt the vote. The Texas House requires a quorum of two-thirds of members present to conduct official business and state lawmakers have reported they plan to be absent from the state until the end of August, when the special session ends.Texas Democrats argue that their states redistricting plan is unconstitutional and nakedly partisan.Pelosi defended the Texas walkout, calling it "self-defense for our democracy."She said Democrats will not let Trump "pave over" free and fair elections in the country.Texas Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows signed arrest warrants for the absent Democrats on Monday, following the state House approving of such warrants and Gov. Greg Abbott calling on the Texas Department of Public Safety to arrest the "delinquent Texas House Democrats." The arrest warrants are largely viewed as symbolic as they only apply to those within state lines.California State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, a Democrat, said maps would be available to view next week."Once these maps are released, voters will have the opportunity to digest these maps, review them for weeks and months leading to this election," he said.Fox News Emma Colton and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Networks pounce on Republican redistricting. They didnt care when Democrats did it
Redistricting is an issue for political junkies. Your average American doesnt obsess over district maps, even when they help determine whos in the majority. They passed a redistricting plan out of committee in Texas on August 2, prompting Texas Democrats to flee to Illinois and other blue states to deny a legislative quorum.Parker Thayer of the Capital Research Center tickled me by tweeting: "Going to Illinois to protest gerrymandering is like going to Wisconsin to protest cheese." Redistricting in blue states is never national "news," because maximizing Democrat seats is considered wonderfully just and humane. These networks arent referees or moderators or reformers who just want sensible districting in the public interest. They are a partisan adjunct that only consider gerrymandering outrageous when Republicans are accused of doing it.GOV. GREG ABBOTT THREATENS TO REDISTRICT 8 SEATS FOR GOP IF DEM LAWMAKERS DON'T RETURN TO TEXASOn November 23, 2021 the Tuesday before Thanksgiving that year Democrat Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed off on a redistricting map for Illinois that shamelessly gerrymandered out Republicans, especially poor Adam Kinzinger, who was busily doing Nancy Pelosis bidding on the stilted January 6 committee.ABC, CBS and NBC aired nothing. Only the "PBS News" Hour touched it briefly. Their guest Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report was blunt: "This is a pretty aggressive Democratic gerrymander ... it just goes to show the lengths to which parties go to, to try and entrench their advantage."Texas Democrats also traveled this week to New York, where Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul claimed "this is a war! We are at war." Shes not at war with criminals or terrorists. Shes at war with Republicans. She promised to redistrict New York. But wait Hochul signed a gerrymandered map just last year on February 28, 2024. Network coverage last year? Zero. Zippy.ABBOTT, PAXTON LAUNCH LEGAL BLITZ ON FLEEING DEMOCRATS IN REDISTRICTING SHOWDOWNOn ABCs George Stephanopoulos show on Sunday, there was panic over Texas. Former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder warned "Our democracy is really threatened by what the Republicans are proposing to do in Texas right now." Stephanopoulos could only ask: "Is there any way to stop it?"Democrats claim that democracy is strong or weak depending on whether theyre in power or not. When they lose, democracy is dying. All three networks leaped on the Texas story on Monday morning. "CBS Mornings" queen Gayle King used the D-word: "Texas Democrats flee to Illinois over what they call a power grab by Republicans, a fight with huge implications for Congress and democracy. ... Its a showdown that could have a big impact on democracy in this country."ABCs Jonathan Karl was the only one to note this isnt just a Republican tactic: "Democrats have played the game, too, in the states they control. In deep-blue California, for example, 38% voted Republican last year, and out of 52 congressional districts, only nine are held by Republicans."OBAMA LABELS TEXAS REDISTRICTING PUSH 'A POWER GRAB THAT UNDERMINES OUR DEMOCRACY'On NBCs "Today," co-host Craig Melvin announced: "Our top story on this Monday morning, that growing showdown in Texas over a controversial redistricting plan." The networks decide what is "controversial" and what is not. Anything they dont like is "controversial." Everything they like is just fine, as fine as former President Joe Bidens mental state. At least Melvin asked reporter Ryan Chandler: "How much of this is just a stunt? "Or is there some indication that this move could actually work by Democrats?" Chandler said its only temporary, it wont last.On Monday August 4, Chandler led off by touting warnings from Democrat Governors Kathy Hochul and Gavin Newsom that they too would pursue new congressional maps to further skew toward their party leaving out the fact that theyve already tried to gerrymander to the max.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONOn "CBS Evening News," reporter Ed OKeefe noted what Democrats have done: "If you look here in Illinois, they have drawn their map in such a way that Republicans barely have any seats."COLBERT CONFRONTS JB PRITZKER WITH MAP SHOWING ILLINOIS GERRYMANDERINGBizarrely, the toughest broadcast pushback on Pritzker came from CBS comedian Stephen Colbert, who held up a map of Illinoiss congressional map and told Pritzker, "If you're considering doing a little more redrawing in Illinois, you already have some crazy districts in Illinois.""PBS News Hour" is still drawing on taxpayer money as it promotes the Democrat party line, especially the part about how its "disenfranchising" minorities. On Monday, PBSs Stephanie Sy relayed: "Besides what Democrats see as a brazen power grab, the new map could disproportionately disenfranchise Black and Latino voters."On August 5, PBS anchor Geoff Bennett repeated it: "Some of the Democrats are in Illinois. They said today that the redrawn map would disenfranchise voters of color and that they're not backing down."By this definition, if youre Black and you dont get to vote for Texas Democrat Rep. Jasmine Crockett, your voting rights are denied. Its explicitly racial: if Blacks dont get to vote for a Black Democrat, were back in Jim Crow times.Polls show the Democrats are a mess. The socialist Bernie bros (and gals) hate the party establishment, because its never woke enough. Its not destroying capitalism and police departments fast enough. Its not resisting deportations enough. Its not supporting Islamists against Israel enough. Now theyre in danger of not gerrymandering enough. But you cant win a majority if your polls are in the toilet.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM TIM GRAHAM

Local entrepreneur sounds alarm on local leaders over viral street attack: 'Democrat monopoly'
CINCINNATI, OHIO - Southwest Ohio residents are expressing outrage at local leadership after a viral street fight in their backyard that captured the nations attention. One resident, a local political activist, told Fox News Digital a "Democrat monopoly" is partially to blame. The Saturday nightviolence in downtown Cincinnati on July 26, which left a woman knocked unconscious on the street at the hands of a male assailant, was the result of a city that wasnt "prepared" due to political ideology, Price Hill native Adam Koehler told Fox News Digital. He added that the response to the fight was "not leadership.""Leadership comes out and says, 'Hey, we've got a problem. Here's my solution to fix it,'" Koehler said. "But instead, they want to be cowardly and hide the fact that crime is actually happening."Cincinnati's mayor and other local officials have faced heated criticism in recent days over the perception they are not taking crime seriously. One elected Democrat,Councilwoman Victoria Parks, posted on social media saying that the victims of the fight "begged for that beatdown."CINCINNATI MAN WHO LOST EYE IN UNSOLVED RANDOM BEATING SAYS CRIME 'OUT OF CONTROL' AFTER BRUTAL VIRAL ASSAULT"This is a Democrat monopoly they've got here,"Koehler, an entrepreneur and former candidate for Hamilton County commissioner, told Fox News Digital. "So, I mean they can just pretty much do whatever they want. And a lot of that kind of rhetoric is excused, right? It's, you know, past injustices and you know now I feel like I can say whatever I want and it's excused. And luckily there are some city council members that denounced the words that Victoria Parks said, which is great, but you've got other people that just want to stoke the flames."Holly, the woman brutally knocked out and bruised in the attack, told Fox News this week she is yet to receive a phone call from the mayor or top officials "just apologizing for what happened and for letting these thugs and criminals run the streets when they should have been in jail to begin with."Koehler told Fox News Digital that Democrats running the city "have an agenda" and "want to look a certain way" and "ignore the problem.""It's a lot of these ideologies that come out of the universities, right?" Koehler said. "Every generation thinks they figured something out about crime and they're soft-hearted people, they wanted to do things, but, you know, policies like what Giuliani did in New York, those kind of things work."CINCINNATI POLICE CHIEF SAYS OUT OF 100 PEOPLE WATCHING AND RECORDING VIOLENT ATTACK, ONLY 1 CALLED 911Koehler, who was speaking to Fox News Digital outside a GOP gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamytown hall event on Cincinnatis west side, said figures like Ramaswamy, Sen. Bernie Moreno, and Ohio native VP JD Vance are reasons to be optimistic about addressing the crime spike downtown."Those guys got power," Koehler said. "I mean you start throwing the DOJ down here and start investigating some of the things that are happening, why wasn't there more police there?"Koehler added, "I mean there's a lot of grifting that goes on whenever you have a one-party monopoly in any city. Obviously, you're gonna have corruption. And it's just, it's festered here, and it's culminated in what you see."Morenosaid this week he is introducing "Hollys Act," a move aimed at ending what he calls the justice systems revolving door for repeat offenders."Lets be honest, because a lot of times you guys are qualifying this as a brawl," Moreno told reporters. "This was attempted murder of an innocent woman. And that person had a rap sheet a mile long. Nobody who has that rap sheet should be walking the streets of any Ohio city free."Fox News Digital's Julia Bonavita and Peter D'Abrosca contributed to this report.

College students unsolved murder shines spotlight on serial killer as new theories emerge
Kristin Noel David, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Idaho, vanished on a sunny summer day in 1981 while bicycling along a quiet stretch of Idaho highway.Nine days later, her dismembered remains were discovered in plastic bags floating in the Snake River, wrapped in newspaper pages and scattered across the current.More than four decades later, questions remain about whether the aspiring journalist was the victim of a serial killer.BRYAN KOHBERGER PLEADED GUILTY TO IDAHO STUDENT MURDERS, BUT THESE KEY QUESTIONS REMAIN UNANSWEREDDavid was last seen alive June 26, 1981, pedaling her blue 10-speed bicycle from Moscow to Lewiston, Idaho, along U.S. Highway 95. She had planned to visit friends and reconnect with former professors, the FBI said.According to the FBI bulletin on the case, multiple witnesses that day reported seeing a woman matching Davids description being approached by a man in a brown van just south of Genesee, Idaho. Her body was found July 4, 1981, in the Snake River, about 6 miles west of Clarkston, Washington. Her remains had been dismembered, placed in black plastic trash bags and wrapped in pages from The Lewiston Morning Tribune dated April 7, 17, 19 and 24 of that year.Mysteriously, her right leg was missing, as was her bicycle and clothing. The popular true-crime podcast "Crime Junkie" revisited the case in a July 2025 episode,"Serial Killer: The LewisClark Valley Murders."Host Ashley Flowers emphasized the bizarre detail of the newspaper wrapping."Each body part was wrapped in newspapers, and they realized that the newspapers were from four different issues of the Lewiston Morning Tribune not just one random paper," Flowers said.SUSPECTED SERIAL KILLER MAY HAVE ABDUCTED NEWS ANCHOR WHO VANISHED 30 YEARS AGO: DOC"That takes forethought," she said. "Kristins case has always been the outlier because of how this young woman was found. Dismembered and in garbage bags floating in the Snake River."I think she very well could be a victim of a serial killer just not that one."Kristins killing has long been compared to the unsolved LewisClark Valley murders, which include the disappearances of Christina White in 1979 and the 1982 deaths of Kristina Nelson, Brandy Miller and Steven Pearsall. All were young victims who vanished in the same region within a few years. But Kristins case is different."Shes never fit neatly into the LewisClark Valley cluster," said "Crime Junkie" co-host Brit Prawat. "This could have been someone else entirely."Brian C.
