WWW.FOXNEWS.COMChina may gain greater control of Panama Canal after BlackRock deal misses deadlineChina may soon gain greater influence over the Panama Canal following the collapse of a proposed deal between U.S.-based BlackRock and Hong Kongs CK Hutchison, which had initially sparked tensions with Beijing. The original agreement would have transferred control of dozens of international ports including two in Panama to a consortium involving BlackRock. The deal was reportedly welcomed by former President Donald Trump, who voiced support for reducing Chinese influence over the canal and even floated the idea of the U.S. "taking back" the strategic waterway. However, Beijing pushed back. China advocated for state-owned shipping giant Cosco to be included in the transaction, signaling its desire for a direct stake, not just an indirect one through the Hong Kong-based Hutchison, in the canals operations.Amid mounting pressure from China and the threat of an anti-monopoly investigation, CK Hutchison announced Monday that the exclusive negotiation window with BlackRock had expired. However, the company also signaled its openness to reconfiguring the deal.CHINA, HONG KONG THREATEN TO THWART SALE OF PANAMA CANAL PORTS TO AMERICA'S BLACKROCKIt said it would "remain open to discussions with a view to inviting a major strategic investor from the [Peoples Republic of China] to join as a significant member of the consortium." According to the company, changes in deal structure and participant makeup are necessary to gain approval from "all relevant authorities."The original $23 billion deal involved transferring ownership of 43 ports across 23 countries including the two critical Panamanian ports located at either end of the canal in Balboa and Cristobal. CK Hutchison has operated both since 1997. The firm is owned by the family of Hong Kongs wealthiest man, Li Ka-shing.Chinas growing footprint in Latin American infrastructure has long raised bipartisan alarms in Washington. However, Trump stands out as the first modern U.S. president to suggest reclaiming the Panama Canal, which the U.S. completed in 1914 and handed over to Panama in 1999 under a treaty signed in 1977 during the Carter administration.CHINAS BILLION-DOLLAR FOOTPRINT NEAR FLORIDA COAST POSES US NATIONAL SECURITY RISK, EXPERT WARNS"China is operating the Panama Canal, and we didnt give it to China we gave it to Panama and were taking it back," Trump recently declared. One analyst believes China may ultimately be excluded from the Panama port holdings while gaining control of most other assets in the larger deal."China will insist this be the quid pro quo: that the other global ports have Cosco participation. And obviously, Cosco is already a major global port holder," said Dane Chamorro, head of Global Risk Analysis at consulting firm Control Risks, in an interview with Fox News Digital."From a U.S. perspective, they might say, Okay, greatwe got Hutchison, or China (since they tend to refer to them interchangeably), out of the two Panama ports. But in the long run, that may result in even more ports globally ending up in the hands of a Chinese state-owned entity."If that happens, Cosco through this broader consolidation would become "far and away the dominant port owner and operator globally," Chamorro said. "That aligns with the fact that China is the worlds largest trading economy, the largest manufacturing economy, and the largest shipbuilder."Chamorro also noted that U.S. companies do not operate on the same global scale in the port industry as Chinese, Hong Kong or Singaporean firms. The failed Hutchison-BlackRock deal underscores the precarious position of Hong Kong businesses under growing pressure from Beijing to prioritize national loyalty even when it threatens ties with Western partners.Meanwhile, Panama insists it retains full sovereignty over the canal itself and maintains that Hutchisons operation of the port facilities does not grant China any influence over canal operations.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 13 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

WWW.FOXNEWS.COM8 signs that you should leave a restaurant, experts sayNot every restaurant outing offers a five-star experience and diners don't always need to taste the food to know something is off. From management gaps to social media hype, key signs can tip you off early to a disappointing experience, say restaurant insiders. These red flags suggest a restaurant may be struggling with service, quality or culture, according to experts.SCAM LEAVES RESTAURANT WAITRESS STUNNED AS DINERS LAUGH IN HER FACE: 'WHY IS THIS THE NORM?'Any of these sound familiar when it comes to a restaurant you know?"Great managers are visible," Salar Sheik, a restaurant consultant based in Los Angeles, told Fox News Digital."They touch tables, support staff and keep the energy up."In addition to operational duties like working with vendors and managing inventory, managers should be greeting customers, taking their feedback and helping out servers as needed, according to Indeed."If you can't tell who's in charge, it might be because no one is," Sheik warned. While social media influencers can boost a restaurant's identity and draw people in, experts note they could be getting freebies or special treatment.RESTAURANT CONSULTANT REVEALS WHAT CUSTOMERS SHOULD NEVER DO WHEN DINING OUT"When every post or review is from a hosted experience, I can't trust that," Candy Hom, an Atlanta-based food critic, tour guide and chef, told Allrecipes.Their ring lights and food photo shoots can also put a damper on the experiences of other customers."If it feels more like a photo shoot than a place to break bread, odds are the experience is built more for the 'gram than the guest," Sheik said.A restaurant with low traffic could also have slower food rotation, leading to fewer fresh ingredients, according to insiders.WHY SOME STEAKHOUSES ARE THRIVING WHILE OTHERS CAN'T KEEP DINERS COMING BACK: 'NOT JUST ABOUT THE FOOD'Context matters, Sheik said, but beware of dining rooms that are empty at peak hours."Consistently empty restaurants often point to a loss of community trust whether from poor service, declining quality or mismanagement," according to Sheik. The customer might not always be right, but experts say an argumentative staff member could be a sign of poor service standards and a breakdown among the team."If they mess something up, they should try to make it up to you," Hom told Allrecipes.A waiter at a celebrity-owned restaurant once split her table's receipt five ways instead of six then blamed the fact that he usually serves tables of five, Hom said.MAN TAKES TIP BACK AFTER BEING PUBLICLY 'SCOLDED AND HUMILIATED' BY WAITRESS"Even if the food was good, the experience was ruined," she added."If I hear and read about staffers alleging not-great work environments and management issues over and over again from trusted sources I take those to heart," Nadia Chaudhury, an editor at Eater, told Allrecipes.Sheik said there are also signs to watch for while at the restaurant."If you hear managers talking down to staff in front of guests, if your server seems visibly anxious or afraid to make a mistake, or if there's no energy, no personality, no smiles, it often means the culture is toxic or punitive," he said.Sticky menus and lipstick-stained glasses are bad enough, but Sheik pointed to the restrooms as the real test of cleanliness."If those aren't clean, I guarantee you the kitchen's not being held to a higher standard," he said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERCleanliness is one of the most controllable elements of running a restaurant, he added."If the team can't manage that, they're likely failing at much more complex things, too.""If your server has to guess ingredients or check on every question, it signals poor training and a lack of pride in the product," Sheik said.Menu knowledge is key to providing guests with accurate allergen information and enhancing their overall experience, according to Toast, a restaurant management system. If you're being upsold too much, it can be another sign of trouble. For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyleServers should be enlightening guests, not harassing them, experts claim."Suggestive selling is part of the job," Sheik said."But when it feels like a script or desperation, it often means the restaurant is struggling to hit numbers and pushing sales at the cost of genuine hospitality."0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 13 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMDept. of Education launches investigation into Duke University over alleged racial preferencesThe Department of Education announced on Monday that it is launching an investigation into Duke University and Duke Law Journal over alleged racial biases in selecting new editors. The Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights (OCR) cited reports that the Law Journal circulated a packet to school "affinity groups" in 2024 regarding the application process to join the Journal in the new year. Each applicant was asked to write a 12-page memo analyzing an appellate court decision and a 500-word personal statement which would be judged on a points-based grading system along with their first-year GPA.However, applicants from these "affinity groups" were reportedly given the opportunity to receive extra points if their statements referenced their "race or ethnicity" and up to 10 points for describing how their "membership in an underrepresented group" promoted "diverse voices."DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION LAUNCHES 'ENDDEI' PORTAL FOR PARENTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS TO REPORT DISCRIMINATIONThe OCR believes that this action could be a potential violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964."If Duke illegally gives preferential treatment to law journal or medical school applicants based on those students immutable characteristics, that is an affront not only to civil rights law, but to the meritocratic character of academic excellence," Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement. "Blatantly discriminatory practices that are illegal under the Constitution, antidiscrimination law, and Supreme Court precedent have become all too common in our educational institutions. The Trump Administration will not allow them to continue."McMahon, along with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., sent a joint letter to Duke University requesting the school "review all policies and practices at Duke Health for the illegal use of race preferences, take immediate action to reform all of those that unlawfully take account of race or ethnicity to bestow benefits or advantages, and provide clear and verifiable assurances to the government that Dukes new policies will be implemented faithfully going forwardincluding by making all necessary organizational, leadership, and personnel changes to ensure the necessary reforms will be durable."The department is also requesting Duke University set up a "Merit and Civil Rights Committee" to help resolve further civil rights violations.YALE SCHOLARSHIP DISCRIMINATING BASED ON RACE, CIVIL RIGHTS COMPLAINT ALLEGESFox News Digital reached out to Duke University and Duke Law Journal for comment but did not immediately receive a response.Duke University has come under fire multiple times for racial preferences and pushes for diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the past year.Last year, Fox News Digital reported on a 2021 plan titled "Dismantling Racism and Advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine" for Duke Medical School. The guide called out standards such as dress codes, timeliness and individualism as examples of "White supremacy culture."Dr. Kendall Conger also told Fox News Digital in 2024 that he was fired from Duke Universitys health system after speaking against the universitys pledge against racism, which called racism a "public health crisis."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"It wasn't so much a pledge to better medicine, but a pledge to left-wing ideology. And so, I felt if I did not say anything, I was giving tacit approval to what was in the pledge," Conger said at the time.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 17 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMEd Sullivan, an unsung civil rights championWhen I think of Ed Sullivan, what flashes first to my mind is Feb. 9, 1964, as I sat watching with my parents on a large black-and-white TV as we all did in those days and he gave a wave to introduce the Beatles.I even scribbled it down in my journal, with a small sketch of a long-haired dude singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."But it turns out that the host who drew as many as 50 million viewers on Sunday nights, which will never be repeated did something far, far more important than launch John, Paul, George and Ringo in America. The Daily News columnist was a civil rights leader, and an aggressive one at that. This was no secret to those who closely followed Sullivan, and especially in the Black community.7 DETAILS REVEALED IN NEWLY RELEASED MLK FILESBut a new Netflix documentary, "Sunday Best," filled with riveting archival footage, makes clear how many backstage battles Sullivan had to fight, including with his own network, and how CBS acted shamefully.Even the sainted Edward R. Murrow praised Sullivan in an interview for his celebrity show.Black Americans in those years rarely appeared on television, except in small, buffoonish roles, leaving aside Amos 'n Andy in blackface. That didnt change until 1965, when a pre-scandal Bill Cosby co-starred in "I Spy."CBS suits were right that Sullivan could lose viewers in the South, which was then a hotbed of racism. The KKK marched openly. It was a Ku Klux Klan organizer who wrote George Wallaces infamous line, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!"Sure, we know all about Rosa Parks, who wouldnt give up her seat on the bus, the use of firehoses against Black protesters, the brutal beatings on Bloody Sunday in Selma. But seeing it from this perspective is a heart-stopping reminder of how much stark bigotry stained the country.ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1956, ELVIS PRESLEY APPEARS ON 'THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW' FOR FIRST TIMESullivan, who grew up poor in Harlem when it was largely Italian and Jewish, was covering a football game as sports editor of the New York Evening Graphic in 1929. It was NYU versus the University of Georgia, to be played in New York. And the Georgians had a demand."I was sickened to read NYUs agreement to bench a Negro player for the entire gameIf a New York university allows the Mason Dixon Line to be erected in the center of its playing field," Sullivan wrote, "then that university should disband its football season for all time."So after launching his show in 1948, at the dawn of television, what was Sullivans great sin?He put Black entertainers on the air. Were talking Harry Belafonte, Nat King Cole, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Diana Ross, Bo Diddley, a child prodigy named Stevie Wonder the superstars of their era.Behind the scenes, CBSs conduct was pathetic. Executives urged Sullivan not to shake hands with the Black entertainers, not to put his arm around them, to keep his distance. He basically ignored them. He took heat from Ford Lincoln dealers for kissing Pearl Bailey on the cheek. The host was a powerful guy. He had been on the cover of Time in 1955.After Sullivan announced an upcoming appearance by Belafonte, CBS canceled him because of his pro-Communist views. Sullivan met with the left-wing activist and got him put back on. As the biggest star on television, he could get away with such defiance. As Afro.com noted, Diahann Carroll, who appeared on the show nine times, said: "For those of us who were actors, he introduced us to each other. I dont think he understood what he was doing as exceptional, he was simply doing what was in his heart."Sullivan also took on one of the most racist politicians in our post-Civil War history, Herman Talmadge, the governor of Georgia."We intend to maintain segregation one way or another," Talmadge declared. In pushing an advertising boycott, Talmadge said: "I know that I shall not contribute money by purchasing a product from any man who is contributing to the integration and degradation and the mongrelization of the white race."Sullivan responded in his column theres a screenshot that "the statements of Gov Talmadge that Negro performers should be barred from TV shows on which White performers appear is both stupid and vicious."NEW BOOK BY FOX NEWS' JUAN WILLIAMS, 'NEW PRIZE FOR THESE EYES,' REVEALS 'SECOND' CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENTTalmadge was later elected to the Senate and was embraced by the Washington establishment. It was said that he modified his views on race. What he actually did was try to politically escape the shameful conduct that the Democratic Party could no longer defend. He had company: Strom Thurmond was a staunch segregationist who filibustered the 1957 Civil Rights Act for more than 24 hours; he too later "modified" his views. In the late 1950s, at a meeting of CBS affiliates, several managers of Southern stations complained that the host was booking too many Black performers. An angry Sullivan said the stations were under no obligation to carry his show. No one canceled.CBS canceled Sullivans show in 1971 because his ratings were declining and his audience was skewing older. On that last show, the guest was Gladys Knight and the Pips. He was so angry that he either refused to do a farewell show or was barred by CBS for doing so, depending on the account. It was the longest-running program on television.SUBSCRIBE TO HOWIE'S MEDIA BUZZMETER PODCAST, A RIFF ON THE DAY'S HOTTEST STORIESLook, Sullivans career was framed in the best possible light. The producer is Margo Precht Speciale, his granddaughter. So we should take that into account before nominating him for sainthood. But its fair to say the truth was hidden in plain sight. Ed Sullivan was a genuine civil rights hero. And that was news to me.A little aside: The year after the Beatles debut, a friends parents took us to what is now the Ed Sullivan Theater to see a top-rated rock group, Freddie and the Dreamers, perform their hit "Im Telling You Now," complete with a weird stiff-legged dance. Hey, I didnt mind sitting through all the variety acts for that.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 17 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMTrump boasts he 'stopped about five wars' while opening new Scotland golf course, vows to work with NetanyahuPresident Donald Trump touted his foreign policy achievements while visiting his newest Scottish golf course on Tuesday, a day after appearing to break with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's stance on food supply to Gaza. The president appeared before reporters at Trump International Golf Links near Aberdeen, Scotland, where he and his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, opened a new golf course on Tuesday."I look forward to playing it today. We'll play it very quickly. And then I go back to D.C., and we put out fires all over the world," Trump said before cutting the ribbon opening the new course in the village of Balmedie on Scotland's northern coast."We did one yesterday. You know, we stopped the war, but we stopped about five wars," Trump said. "So that's much more important than playing golf. As much as I like, it's much more important.""It's going to be a special year, and it's going to be a special decade. And we're going to make all of our countries strong and great and really wonderful again," Trump added. "And that's happening, and it's happening very fast."EX-ISRAELI OFFICIAL OFFERS BOLD 2-PRONGED STRATEGY AS 'THE ONLY WAY' TO FREE HOSTAGES FROM HAMASAmid U.S. pressure, Thailand and Cambodia reached a ceasefire agreement. The Trump administration has also claimed responsibility for stopping a nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan, averting conflict between Serbia and Kosovo and diffusing violence between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Earlier this year, Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen agreed to a ceasefire following U.S.-U.K. strikes. In late June, Trump ordered U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and infrastructure, which he claimed ended the Israel-Iran conflict in just 12 days, preventing greater loss of life.Meanwhile, the U.S. and Israel pulled their negotiators from ceasefire talks in Doha, Qatar, last week. Trumps special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said Hamas did not appear to be "coordinated or acting in good faith" to reach an agreement to return the remaining hostages taken in the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel or to "create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza."As the opening ceremony closed Tuesday, a reporter shouted a question at Trump, asking what the president would say next to Netanyahu."We're working together to try to get things straightened out for the world," Trump said.Trump on Monday held a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at another of his golf courses, Trump Turnberry in Girvan, Scotland. When reporters asked if he agreed with Netanyahus recent remarks about concerns of mass starvation in Gaza being overstated, he replied, "I dont know. I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly, because those children look very hungry."Trump has also insisted the U.S. did not receive enough credit for the aid already provided to Gaza, which Hamas terrorists control. The president is capping a five-day foreign trip designed around promoting his family's luxury properties and playing golf.TRUMP PRAISES STARMER ON TURNING AROUND MIGRANT BOATS: 'FANTASTIC THING'Trump used his trip to meet with Starmer and reach a trade framework for tariffs between the U.S. and the European Unions 27 member countries though scores of key details remain to be hammered out."We just signed a very big deal, as you know, with the European Union, but also with the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom was a week before, and it's a very big deal and a great deal for the country. And it's a great deal for everybody," Trump said Tuesday.Trump had invited Starmer, who famously does not golf, aboard Air Force One so that the prime minister could get a private tour of his Aberdeen properties before Tuesdays ceremonial opening.Billing itself the "Greatest 36 Holes in Golf," the Trump International Golf Links, Scotland, was designed by Eric Trump. The course is hosting a PGA Seniors Championship event later this week, after Trump leaves."These are very hard to build, and you won't see them built anymore. You'll probably never see another course built in the dunes, not dunes like this," Trump said of the course on Tuesday. The new golf course will be the third owned by the Trump Organization in Scotland. Trump bought Turnberry in 2014 and owns another course near Aberdeen that opened in 2012.Trump honored Sarah Malone, the Executive Vice President of Trump International Golf Links Scotland, during Tuesday's opening ceremony. Eric Trump said Malone "has truly become a member of our family" after 16 years overseeing the properties. The president's late mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's north and immigrated to New York. She died in 2000 at age 88."We love Scotland. You know, my mother was born here and she loved it. She would come back here religiously once a year during the summers with my sister Marianne, and sometimes my sister Elizabeth. But they would come here religiously," Trump said Tuesday. "Stornoway. That's serious Scotland, by the way."The president also thanked his daughter-in-law Lara Trump, who was on the new course with him Tuesday, for the work she did leading the Republican Party during the 2024 presidential election.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPTrumps assets are in a trust, and his sons are running the family business while he is in the White House. The Associated Press contributed to this report.0 Kommentare 0 Geteilt 18 Ansichten 0 Bewertungen
