CHRISTOPHER RUFO: AOC, Mamdani engage in political identity theft for votes
New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Corteztwo of Americas most prominent socialist politicianshave committed identity theft. No, they did not pilfer a Social Security number or swipe the digits of someone elses credit card. They have done something more subtle: stealing the image of the oppressed for personal and political gain. Its an old trick. Just as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., claimed Native American heritage as she ascended the ranks of academia, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez adopted the identities of the poor and downtrodden as they ascended the ranks of politics. Both built their political personas on a small kernel of truth: Mamdaniclaimedon his college application to be black because he was born in Uganda, despite being the son of two famous, affluent, and educated Indians; Ocasio-Cortez claimed to be a "Bronx girl" because she lived in the borough until age five, when she moved to a tony corner of Westchester County, New York. Both have structured their identities around grand narratives of oppressor and oppressed, which they hope to convert into power and prestige. The truth is that both Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez belong to groupsIndians and Latinos, respectivelythat do not fit neatly into Americas deepest historical binary, that between White and Black, colonist and slave. Though both could doubtlessly point toward some personal slight or past injustice against their ethnic group, neither Mamdani nor Ocasio-Cortez can lay a real claim to historical oppression. Indian Americans are among the most educated and affluent groups in America, and the vast majority of Latinos arrived in the United States after desegregation and the Civil Rights Act. The very fact that millions of people uprooted themselves from India and Latin America to try their luck in this country indicates that they considered America a land of opportunity, rather than injustice.NYC SOCIALIST WOULD-BE MAYOR ZOHRAN MAMDANI THROWS LAVISH WEDDING BASH IN UGANDAFor Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, however, the myth of post-Civil Rights Act discrimination must be maintained at all costs. Both use their privilegeMamdani, graduate of Bowdoin and son of a professor; Ocasio-Cortez, graduate of Boston University and daughter of an architectto advance their narrative of oppression. They do it because it works. Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez have translated the politics of resentment to win political campaigns in Queens and the Bronx, respectively. They motivate anxious, college-educated left-wing activists, who run the ground game for their campaigns and harvest the support of working-class and minority voters in the outer boroughs. It has always been thus. Marx and Engels were sons of affluence; Lenin was a lawyer; Mao was a librarian at Peking University. Left-wing radicals abandoned the theory of spontaneous working-class revolution not long after they hatched it. The "vanguard of the proletariat" has been their dominant concept since the Russian Revolution. And identity theftclaiming to represent the poor, the downtrodden, the oppressedhas been their dominant tactic.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONHow should opponents respond? Pointing out the fraud might be effective. After all, Warren never fully recovered from the revelation that she misrepresented her ancestry in pursuit of power. But it will be harder with the new generation of identity thieves, such as Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, who are skilled at political agitprop and can rely on their racial minority status to make some critics reluctant to go after them. The better approach is to frame the argument around two concepts: America and manipulation. First, critics should point out that millions of people around the world want to come to America for its opportunities, equality under law, and genuinely tolerant culture; the Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez families have become successful precisely because of this countrys system, which should be celebrated rather than condemned.Second, critics should portray such politicians as dishonest and self-serving, public figures who misrepresent their backgrounds in pursuit of personal status and manipulate voters to advance destructive ideologies. Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortezs policies will yield the opposite of what they promise, as socialist policies have done in the past.Regrettably, the identity-theft strategy will remain with us for the foreseeable future. When I was an undergraduate at Georgetown University, I noticed that many of the most affluent and connected students had prepared an oppression narrative or sob storynot out of modesty but ambition. They sensed, correctly, that a story of racial, psychological, or familial trauma would grant them status and a competitive edge. I saw the sons of Middle Eastern sheiks and the daughters of American moguls rehearsing lines about supposed oppression that are now familiar in the national discourse. The trouble is that fake identities can yield real consequences. Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are elites masquerading as the oppressed. If they are successful, they will create a system that rewards people like them and punishes those below. This column was first published on the authors Substack.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM CHRISTOPHER RUFO

Browns GM calls out Shedeur Sanders over speeding tickets: 'Not smart'
Shedeur Sanders' tumultuous offseason took a couple more wrong turns when he was twice cited for speeding.Sanders was first ticketed for going 91 mph in a 65-mph zone. Two weeks later, he went 101 in a 60 and failed to appear in court for both citations. The quarterback said he haas learned from his mistakes, and it seems that his general manager, Andrew Berry, assisted in teaching him a thing or two.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM"Not smart. Just not smart," Berry told reporters this week about the tickets. "Its something that weve addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications, he understands the consequences. Its not just about yourself. Its not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people. . . . A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, its just dangerous."The rookie quarterback addressed those traffic tickets while appearing at teammate David Njokus charity softball game last month.AARON RODGERS OFFERS OLIVE BRANCH TO TERRY BRADSHAW AFTER LEGENDARY QB'S HARSH WORDS"I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them," Sanders said. "I made some, you know, not great choices I learned."Sanders is now currently vying for a starting spot on the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in the fifth round after an unprecedented slide in the NFL Draft. The Colorado alum was once in consideration to be a top-five pick, but he was not selected until the third and final day of the draft. One of the quarterbacks selected over him, Dillon Gabriel in the third round, was his own teammate. His odds of getting the starting job don't seem too high right now, though, as he's taking most of his reps with third-stringers. Out of himself, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Gabriel, he is the only one who has not taken a snap with the first team.Follow Fox News Digitalssports coverage on X,and subscribe tothe Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

EXCLUSIVE: Mysterious giant Elon Musk head travels America's national parks, saying 'Make America Wait Again'
EXCLUSIVE: During this high summer season, visitors to several of Americas most iconic national parks have found themselves face to face with something unexpected: the towering 12-foot-sculpted head of Elon Musk, smirking confidently atop a trailer. Its flanked by patriotic stars and a two-part message: "MAKE AMERICA WAIT AGAIN" and, in bold yellow below, "Now With Longer Lines Thanks to DOGE Cuts."The sculpture has made surprise appearances at Arches, Yosemite and Mt. Rainier National Parks, drawing curious crowds and fueling viral conversations online. Now, the anonymous organizer behind the spectacle has come forward exclusively to Fox News Digital to explain why he built it, why he picked Musk President Donald Trump's former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leader and policy advisor and why he wanted it seen in America's favorite outdoor spaces.'KILL BILL': ELON MUSK'S CONSERVATIVE EVOLUTION PUTS HIM AT ODDS WITH TRUMP ON KEY LEGISLATION"Youre not the first outlet people would expect to run this," the anonymous backer said during a phone interview. "Which is exactly why I wanted to talk to you."Identifying only as a concerned citizen and "curious reader," the man insists he has no ties to any political organization, nonprofit, or corporate interest. "No organizations, no parties just me and a few people who care," he said.He explained that the sculpture is "part protest, part performance art," aimed at drawing attention to recent layoffs and budget reductions across the National Park Service.'AMERICAN HERO' OR 'FAILURE': ELON MUSK'S DOGE DEPARTURE DIVIDES CAPITOL HILL"However you feel about the DOGE cuts, and were using that word tongue-in-cheek, the reality is that thousands of people who love these parks and work to protect them were let go or impacted. And nobodys really talking about it anymore."The parks were a deliberate choice. "National parks are one of the few truly nonpartisan joys we have in this country," he said. "Democrats, Republicans, independents everyone loves the outdoors."He chose Mt. Rainier for this weekends installation, he said, because of the high-season congestion and overflowing parking lots."Its incredibly packed. One lane in, one lane out. The parking lots are overflowing you literally cant park to see the most popular spots," he said. "It just felt poetic."Park visitors' reactions were wide-ranging. Some posed for photos, others made rude gestures, and many simply stared."People crowded around it, took photos, laughed, flipped it off, gave it thumbs-up," he said. "It ran the gamut a good cross-section of America."The sculpture, built by a Michigan-based artist found online, was designed to look lifelike, and just exaggerated enough to be meme-ready."We looked for someone who could do something photo-realistic on a big scale but still work within a budget," he said. "We really wanted the smirk. That very self-satisfied look."As for the sign, "MAKE AMERICA WAIT AGAIN" was no accident. The nod to a certain presidents famous slogan is deliberate, the backer admitted, but it isnt meant to target any particular political side. "Its meant to spark conversation," he said."Everyone has an opinion about Elon Musk. But I wanted this to cut across political lines."When asked why he insists on remaining anonymous, the backer didnt dodge the question. "Theres something fun about the mystery," he said. "Its not important who I am. Its about what this statue represents."Images of the Musk bust have set Reddit ablaze. Comments from just one post from r/pics include:The mystery creator acknowledges the risks of such a public display but believes the message matters."Major things happen in our country, real, damaging things, and we forget them because the news cycle spins so fast," he said. "This is a loud, silly way to not forget."When asked what hed say directly to Musk, he didnt hesitate: "Stick to making cars, and stay out of screwing up the government."The backer says the National Parks themselves are what unite Americans in divided times. "It is like common knowledge that becoming a park ranger is something you do for the love, not for the money," he said. "So when they were fired or stretched thin, it hurt something we all share."When pressed about his own political leanings, he said only: "Im definitely not a Republican, and I wouldnt call myself a Democrat either. . . . I think there are aspects of both parties that, in my opinion, do certain things right and certain things wrong."CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPBut why bring the project to Fox News Digital? "Because I think that youre not the first audience people would think of to cover this. And I think thats fantastic," he said. "That makes me thrilled. Because were all Americans and we all have different views and different things we enjoy. Funny things and weird things and bizarre things and pretty things."As for what comes next, the head is going to more parks, but where and when remain a mystery. "I can't tell you, but I'm happy to keep telling you in the right moment."

Rubio rips Venezuela's Maduro as 'narco-terrorist' leader threatening US one year after disputed election
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is hammering Venezuelan dictator Nicols Maduro on Sunday as the South American country holds municipal elections to fill hundreds of mayoral positions and thousands of council seats. The municipal contests are happening one day before the one-year anniversary of Venezuela's presidential election, which was widely condemned by the United States and other international observers as illegitimate. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has been escalating pressure against Maduro in recent days, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday accused the foreign head of state of being the leader of an entity aiding terrorism against the U.S."One year since dictator Nicols Maduro defied the will of the Venezuelan people by baselessly declaring himself the winner, the United States remains firm in its unwavering support to Venezuelas restoration of democratic order and justice," Rubio said in a statement on Sunday. "Maduro is not the President of Venezuela and his regime is not the legitimate government."TRUMP FOE BOASBERG ORDERS DOJ TO DETAIL STATUS OF CECOT MIGRANTS SENT TO VENEZUELA"Maduro is the leader of the designated narco-terrorist organization Cartel de Los Soles, and he is responsible for trafficking drugs into the United States and Europe," Rubio continued. "Maduro, currently indicted by our nation, has corrupted Venezuelas institutions to assist the cartels criminal narco-trafficking scheme into the United States."The Justice Department charged Maduro and 14 other former and current Venezuelan officials with narco-terrorism, corruption, drug trafficking and other criminal charges in March 2020. At the start of this year, 10 days before President Donald Trump returned to office, the State Department increased its reward for information leading to Maduro's capture from $15 million to up to $25 million."For years, Maduro and his cronies have manipulated Venezuelas electoral system to maintain their illegitimate grip on power," Rubio added on Sunday. "By scheduling the municipal elections on the eve of the anniversary of the stolen July 28 presidential election, the regime once again aims to deploy the military and police to suppress the will of the Venezuelan people.""The United States will continue working with our partners to hold accountable the corrupt, criminal and illegitimate Maduro regime. Those who steal elections and use force to grasp power undermine Americas national security interests," Rubio said.Maduro became the Venezuelan president in 2013, but the U.S. has not recognized his presidency since 2019. The U.S. and other countries have refused to recognize Maduro as the winner of the July 2024 Venezuelan election, citing widespread fraud.VENEZUELAN OPPOSITION MEMBER DETAILS HARROWING 400-DAY CAPTIVITY AT UNThe Treasury Department on Friday sanctioned the Cartel de los Soles, also known as Cartel of the Suns, as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist." The U.S. alleges that Cartel de los Soles is headed by Maduro and other Venezuelan high-ranking individuals in his regime "who corrupted the institutions of government in Venezuela, including parts of the military, intelligence apparatus, legislature, and the judiciary, to assist the cartels endeavors of trafficking narcotics into the United States."The U.S. claims the Venezuela-based group provides material support to Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel. The Trump administration classified Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel as foreign terrorist organizations in February.According to the Treasury Department, the name Cartel de los Soles is derived from the sun insignias often portrayed on the uniforms of Venezuelan military officials. The cartel "supports Tren de Aragua in carrying out its objective of using the flood of illegal narcotics as a weapon against the United States," according to the Treasury Department.Bessent said on Friday that the new action "exposes the illegitimate Maduro regimes facilitation of narco-terrorism through terrorist groups like Cartel de los Soles.""The Treasury Department will continue to execute on President Trumps pledge to put America First by cracking down on violent organizations including Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel, and their facilitators, like Cartel de los Soles," he added.
