DOJ receives Gabbard's criminal referral on bombshell claims Obama admin 'manufactured' Russian collusion hoax
The Department of Justice confirmed Monday that it has received Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard's criminal referral related to her bombshell claims that Obama-era officials "manufactured and politicized intelligence" to create the narrative that Russia was attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election, Fox News has confirmed. The Department of Justice declined further comment, but confirmed to Fox News that the department received the referral.Gabbard released unclassified documents Friday that reportedly show "overwhelming evidence" that then-President Barack Obama and his national security team laid the groundwork for what would be the yearslong Trump-Russia collusion probe after Trump's election win against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016."Their goal was to usurp President Trump and subvert the will of the American people," Gabbard had posted to X on Friday regarding the criminal referral. "No matter how powerful, every person involved in this conspiracy must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The integrity of our democratic republic depends on it. We are turning over all documents to the DOJ for criminal referral."OBAMA ADMIN MANUFACTURED INTELLIGENCE TO CREATE 2016 RUSSIAN ELECTION INTERFERENCE NARRATIVE, DOCUMENTS SHOWGabbard joined Fox News' Maria Bartiromo Sunday, where she detailed evidence uncovered in the case, which she said showcases "overwhelming" proof that Obama-era officials laid the groundwork for what would be the yearslong Trump-Russia collusion probe after the 2016 election.FBI LAUNCHES CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS OF JOHN BRENNAN, JAMES COMEY: DOJ SOURCES"The implications of this are frankly nothing short of historic," Gabbard said Sunday."Over 100 documents that we released on Friday really detail and provide evidence of how this treasonous conspiracy was directed by President Obama just weeks before he was due to leave office after President Trump had already gotten elected. This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. This is an issue that is so serious it should concern every single American because it has to do with the integrity of our democratic republic," she continued.Following Gabbard's revelations, Trump shared a video to his Truth Social account showing a handful of Democrats, including Obama, vowing that "no one is above the law." Later in the clip, an AI-generated video showed Trump and Obama sitting in the Oval Office before Obama is arrested while the song "YMCA" plays in the background.Additionally, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, will release declassified documents related to a 2018 DOJ Inspector General report on the Justice Department's handling of the investigations related to the 2016 presidential election, Fox News confirmed Monday. Grassley will specifically declassify the report's appendix, which Fox learned focuses on the Clinton email investigation.Hillary Clinton was investigated by the FBI for holding classified information on her private email server at home when she served as secretary of state under the Obama administration. Then-FBI Director James Comey said publicly that Clinton mishandled classified information, but declined to recommend prosecution.Fox News Digital's Brooke Singman and Danielle Wallace contributed to this report.

Gisele Fetterman admits she 'wouldn't be supportive' of her husband John running for higher office
FIRST ON FOX Gisele Fetterman, the wife of Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, admitted in a new interview she wouldn't support the idea of her husband running for president. In an excerpt obtained by Fox News Digital, Fetterman was asked if her husband had "any ambitions to run for president," during an appearance on Meghan McCain's "Citizen McCain" on 2WAY."That's a question for him," Fetterman told McCain. "But, I certainly wouldn't be supportive of that."JOHN FETTERMAN FACES NEW SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH, FAMILY DRAMA, SPARKING ONLINE UPROARMcCain also asked Gisele if she had any interest in running for office herself, after media reports during her husband's senatorial campaign suggested she was the "de facto candidate" after he suffered a stroke on the campaign trail in 2022.Fetterman denied she had any interest in running for office, telling McCain she would "never" consider it during the interview, which will air in full on Wednesday."Why do you think people always want to put that on you?" McCain asked.BIDEN PREDICTS GISELE FETTERMAN WILL BE GREAT, GREAT LADY IN THE SENATEFetterman was baffled by media reports speculating over her political ambitions."It was so bizarre. I remember it was like I was, I was carving to be the sender," Fetterman remarked, guessing that the media focus on her was just for "clicks."McCain, the daughter of the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, added she had no interest herself in running for office."I have never told anyone in my entire life that I would run for office or had any desire to," Fetterman added. "You couldn't pay me to run for office. But that was the running news for months.""It's so strange," she went on. "I feel for really famous people like celebrities, because I think of all the things I've read about them, I don't believe anything now because it's probably not true either."Sen. Fetterman's office did not respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.McCains interview with Gisele Fetterman airs on Wednesday at noon ET on 2WAYs "Citizen McCain."Fetterman also answered questions from the 2WAY audience in the interview, which also delved into her views on the media and protecting her family.John Fetterman won a fiercely contested Senate seat in the swing state of Pennsylvania in 2022, but he has irked his party at times since taking office for some of his stances, particularly his steadfast support for Israel and on illegal immigration.Earlier this year, a New York Magazine expose revealed alleged tensions between Fetterman and his wife over his backing of Israel and its war in Gaza. The report claimed Gisele confronted her husband about Israel "bombing refugee camps" and went to staffers with her concerns about his health.Sen. Fetterman was hospitalized for depression after his stroke in 2023, and reports have emerged from his staffers describing erratic behavior behind the scenes since he took office. He dismissed the NY Mag story as a "hit piece" at the time.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell hit with criminal referral by House GOP Trump ally
FIRST ON FOX: Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., is referring Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal charges, accusing him of two specific instances of lying under oath.Luna is accusing Powell of perjury on two occasions, according to a letter to the DOJ first obtained by Fox News Digital. It comes as conservative Trump allies continue to demand that Powell, a Trump appointee himself, be fired before his term expires in mid-2026.POWELL SHARES WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR HIM TO LEAVE THE FED, BOOK REVEALS"On June 25, 2025, Chairman Powell provided testimony under oath before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs regarding the renovation of the Federal Reserves Eccles Building. In his statements, he made several materially false claims," Luna's letter said.Specifically, she accused him of lying about lavish amenities at the Federal Reserve's Eccles Building and misrepresenting its state of maintenance."Separately, in a letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought, Chairman Powell characterized the changes that escalated the cost of the project from $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion as minor. However, documents reviewed by congressional investigators indicate that the scope and cost overruns of this project were neither minor in nature nor in substance," Luna wrote. She claimed his statement that the cost increase was to simplify construction and avoid further delays was false.TRUMP URGES RATE CUTS TO BOOST SAVINGS, BUT FED SAYS ECONOMY IS STRONG"It is contradicted by the Federal Reserves final submission to the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) and by the assertions made in Director Voughts own original letter to Chairman Powell," Luna wrote."According to those records, the revised plan includes a VIP private dining room, premium marble finishes, modernized elevators, water features, and a roof terrace gardenfeatures that Powell publicly denied existed. While Powell presented the changes as simplifications, the actual project plans suggest the opposite."She first announced she would be referring Powell last week on X.Perjury can be punishable by up to five years in prison in addition to fines.Trade outlet Mortgage Professional reported that Powell denied all accusations of perjury and has directed a formal watchdog probe into renovation project costs of the Eccles Building. The Federal Reserve's website also now includes a video tour of the renovation and notes on its proposed plans.Fox News Digital reached out to the Federal Reserve for further comment but did not immediately hear back.Luna previously wrote on X that she believed President Donald Trump would soon fire Powell, but that has not yet come to fruition.Trump has been attacking Powell for not heeding his direction to drop interest rates. He told reporters it was "highly unlikely" he would fire him, however.More moderate Republicans and supporters of Powell's, however, have argued that firing him would create even more market instability.

Iran seeks China, Russia help to stall UN sanctions ahead of nuclear talks with Europeans
Iran said it will hold talks with Russia and China on Tuesday in an attempt to circumvent U.N. snapback sanctions as the deadline for a nuclear agreement looms."We are in constant consultation with these two countries to prevent activation of the snapback or to mitigate its consequences," Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said during a Monday press briefing, reported Iran International. "We have aligned positions and good relations."Both China and Russia are signatories of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an agreement that seemingly failed to end Iran's nuclear ambitions following the U.S. withdrawal from the deal under the first Trump presidency in 2018 and the subsequent nuclear advances Tehran made.IRAN VOWS RETALIATION IF UN SECURITY COUNCIL ISSUES SNAPBACK SANCTIONS ON ANNIVERSARY OF NUCLEAR DEALThe news of the impending meeting comes one week after France, Germany and the U.K. announced they would enforce snapback sanctions on Tehran if it fails to enter into a new nuclear agreement by the end of August. What would need to be included in a new nuclear deal remains unclear and Iran has not yet renewed nuclear negotiations with the U.S. after Washington levied significant strikes against its top atomic facilities last month in coordination with Israel. The snapback mechanism was reserved under the JCPOA and allows any signatory of the agreement to recall stiff international sanctions on Iran to be enforced by all 15 members of the United Nations Security Council including Russia and China if Tehran is determined to have violated the terms of the 2015 deal.Since the first Trump presidency, the U.S. has threatened the use of snapback sanctions, though Washington can no longer call for the re-implementation of the economic tool as it left the agreement a decision determined by the U.N. and the other JCPOA signatories.IRAN FACES AUGUST DEADLINE TO ACCEPT COMPREHENSIVE NUCLEAR DEAL OR FACE RENEWED UN SANCTIONSBut top D.C. officials, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have continued to encourage European allies to use this tool to push Iran to cease nuclear development.Iran is also set to hold talks with France, Germany and the U.K. an alliance also known as the E3 this Friday, though the window to secure a new nuclear deal is closing despite years of repeated attempts."Snapback at the UNSC remains, not just the Trump administrations, but the international communitys most powerful political and diplomatic tool against the Islamic Republic of Irans nuclear program," Behnam Ben Taleblu, Iranian expert and senior director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies Iran program, told Fox News Digital."Snapback and a restoration of older, tougher UNSC resolutions that contain arms export prohibitions, missile testing prohibitions, as well as a panel of experts to monitor sanctions compliance, will actually magnify the political and military dividends that the U.S. and Israeli strikes have given," he added.Security experts have been sounding the alarm for months that it will take roughly six weeks for U.N. sanctions to be enforced, largely due to procedural reasons, and the ability to enforce snapback sanctions under JCPOA terms will expire on Oct. 18.Ben Taleblu also warned that these intense sanctions on Iran could instigate further security threats to the West when it comes to Tehrans nuclear program, as it could prompt Iran to leave other major international nuclear agreements like the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Trained dogs can smell Parkinson's disease before symptoms show up, study finds
Mans best friend could provide more than just companionship. In a new study from the University of Bristol, dogs were found to detect Parkinsons disease well before symptoms appear.Previous research has shown that people with Parkinsons have increased amounts of sebum an oily, waxy substance with a distinctively musky odor on the skin.WOMAN SAYS DOG DETECTED HER BREAST CANCER BEFORE DOCTORS DID: 'HE'S KNOWN THIS WHOLE TIME'In the new study, two dogs that had been trained on more than 200 odor samples were presented with skin swabs from 130 people with Parkinson's and 175 people without the disease, according to a press release. The dogs a golden retriever named Bumper and a black labrador named Peanut were rewarded for positively identifying Parkinsons samples and for ignoring negative ones. The dogs showed sensitivity of up to 80% which means they identified people who had the disease 80% of the time. They achieved specificity of up to 98%, which is how good they were at ruling out people who did not have Parkinsons. The University of Bristol collaborated with Medical Detection Dogs and the University of Manchester on the study, which was published in The Journal of Parkinsons Disease on July 15.While there is no early screening available for Parkinsons, some early warning signs can appear years or even decades before diagnosis, according to experts."Identifying diagnostic biomarkers of PD, particularly those that may predict development or help diagnose disease earlier, is the subject of much ongoing research," said lead study author Nicola Rooney, associate professor at Bristol Veterinary School at the University of Bristol, in the release."The dogs in this study achieved high sensitivity and specificity and showed there is an olfactory signature distinct to patients with the disease," she went on."Sensitivity levels of 70% and 80% are well above chance, and I believe that dogs could help us to develop a quick, non-invasive and cost-effective method to identify patients with Parkinsons disease."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERClaire Guest, chief scientific officer at Medical Detection Dogs in the U.K., reiterated that the study confirmed dogs can "very accurately" detect disease."Timely diagnosis is key, as subsequent treatment could slow down the progression of the disease and reduce the intensity of symptoms," she said in the release.Perdita Barran, professor of mass spectrometry at The University of Manchester, said the study "adds to the growing body of evidence showing that simple, non-invasive skin swabs can be used to diagnose Parkinson's disease, offering a faster and more accessible method for early detection."For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/healthLooking ahead, the team plans to conduct longer-term studies to assess dogs capacity to detect Parkinsons before diagnosis. The Michael J. ABC's Martha Raddatz admits Trump border policies 'certainly working' in stemming migrant flow
ABC News correspondent Martha Raddatz hit the Los Angeles mayor with a surprising fact-check on the success of President Donald Trumps immigration agenda on Sunday. After airing an interview that she had with Democratic Mayor Karen Bass, Raddatz disputed her claim that Trumps immigration crackdown hasn't been successful."And whatever theyre doing is certainly working at the border itself," the reporter said on ABC News, responding to Bass take.'TRUMP EFFECT' TOUTED AS SOUTHERN BORDER NUMBERS STAY LOW, INCLUDING NEW RECORDThe network aired a segment of the interview where Raddatz asked the mayor about Trump's use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain illegal immigrants in her city."Los Angeles is a city of immigrants, 3.8 million people, and about 50% of our population is Latino," Bass said. "And so, when the raids started, fear spread. Fear spread like a virus around the entire county."Raddatz followed up, asking, "Is there anything good you think the administration has done in these six months at the border?"NEW DATA REVEALS BORDER CROSSINGS REACH RECORD LOWS AMID TRUMP ADMIN'S CRACKDOWNThe mayor replied the administration did well when responding to the L.A. fires that ravaged the county in January."[But] if you ask me, is there anything that they have done good in terms of immigration? I dont know, I dont think so. I think that the viewpoint has been punitive, has been, Lets make it as miserable as possible so that these people dont come,'" Bass said.Following the interview clip, Raddatz disputed Bass statement, saying that the Trump administrations crackdown has produced dramatic results on the U.S. southern border."We were down on that border, and it is dramatically, dramatically different than it was a year ago," she declared.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREAs U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported earlier this month, June 2025 saw the lowest number of southern border crossings in U.S. history.Nationwide, there were 25,228 CBP encounters, the lowest monthly number the agency has recorded, including a "historical low" of 8,024 apprehensions. Encounters include legal ports of entry, whereas apprehensions are arrests of those coming into the United States illegally. The Biden administration, on the other hand, saw record numbers of illegal border crossings during its term. Dec. 2023 was the "worst month for encounters of inadmissible aliens on the southern border in U.S. history 251,178," The Heritage Foundation wrote last week. The mayor's office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.Fox News Digital's Cameron Arcand contributed to this report.

Poll Position: Mamdani's the frontrunner, but isn't running away with NYC mayoral race just yet
The winner of the New York City Democratic primary for mayor is traditionally considered the overwhelming frontrunner in the general election. That's because Democrats outnumber Republicans roughly six-to-one in the nation's most populous city. However, that's not the case this year, one month after democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old Ugandan-born, state assemblyman from Queens, stunned the political world by topping former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates in a come-from-behind primary victory to capture the nomination.President Donald Trump believes that Cuomo, who last week officially announced he would continue his mayoral bid as an independent candidate, has a solid chance of defeating Mamdani, whom the president has repeatedly claimed is a "communist.""I would think that he would have a good shot at winning," the president told reporters at the White House last week, a day after Cuomo's announcement.MAMDANI ON EXTENDED AFRICA TRIP AMID NYC MAYORAL CAMPAIGNA handful of polls conducted this month in New York City suggest that Mamdani is the frontrunner, but that he is far from running away with the race. The surveys indicate Mamdani ahead of Cuomo anywhere from around 15 points to as few as three points.Trailing Mamdani and Cuomo in the surveys are Mayor Eric Adams, the embattled incumbent who announced earlier this year that he would seek re-election as an independent candidate, and Guardian Angels co-founder Curtis Sliwa, who for a second straight election is the Republican mayoral nominee.CUOMO QUIPS EVEN I WILL MOVE TO FLORIDA IF MAMDANI WINS NYC MAYORAL BIDAlso on the ballot in the general election is Jim Walden, a former federal prosecutor running as an independent.Walden has proposed that an independent survey be conducted in September to determine which candidate would have the best shot of defeating Mamdani, with the other candidates agreeing to drop out.Cuomo has embraced the idea, with Adams and Sliwa not signing on board.Having the former governor, who resigned in 2021 amid multiple scandals, and Adams, who has faced a slew of controversies since winning election as mayor four years ago, both agreeing that such a scenario seems remote, both have urged the other to exit the race."We have to put our political ambitions in the backseat to the interests of New Yorkers," Walden said this past weekend in an interview with Fox News' Bryan Llenas.POTUS THE PUNDIT: TRUMP SAYS CUOMO'S GOT A 'GOOD SHOT' OF BEATING MAMDANIHe charged that the other candidates "right now, they're putting their own political ambitions above New Yorkers."Since his Democratic Party nomination victory, some of the unions and elected officials that supported Cuomo in the primary are now backing Mamdani.Mamdani, who was backed by progressive champions Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, surged to a primary victory thanks to an energetic campaign that put a major focus on affordability and New York City's high cost of living.Mamdani made smart use of social media platforms, including TikTok, as he engaged low-propensity voters. He proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City's vast bus system, making CUNY (City University of New York) "tuition-free," freezing rents on municipal housing, offering "free childcare" for children up to age 5 and setting up government-run grocery stores.Republicans have targeted Mamdani and tried to turn him into the new face of the Democratic Party. They aim to anchor him to vulnerable Democrats across the country running in elections this year and next year.Republicans have spotlighted recent news items regarding Mamdani that have gone viral. They include a 2020 photo Mamdani posted online that shows him flipping off a statue of Christopher Columbus, stories about comments Mamdani made last December when he said as mayor he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his recent comments in a cable news interview that "I have many critiques of capitalism.""I dont think that race is over yet. We do have a couple of people running. There are things coming out about him," Trump said last week, as he referred to Mamdani.

Obama now 'squarely in Russiagate crosshairs,' journalist Matt Taibbi claims
Former President Obama is now "squarely" in the crosshairs of the Russiagate "scam," journalist Matt Taibbi wrote in a Racket News piece on Saturday, shortly after DNI Tulsi Gabbard's office unleashed a blitz of documents and a memo said to detail the origins of the Trump-Russia collusion narrative.Taibbi quoted an unnamed source in describing Obama as no longer being a "tertiary" character in the "scam" that followed President Trump's 2016 election win over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He elaborated on the remark Monday on "America's Newsroom."OBAMA OFFICIALS ADMITTED THEY HAD NO 'EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE' OF TRUMP-RUSSIA COLLUSION: HOUSE INTEL TRANSCRIPTS"The last major revelation that came out was that John Brennan and James Comey were the focus of criminal investigations that had been opened by the Justice Department, but these new documents that were released by Tulsi Gabbard make it clear that the investigation is now aimed at the Obama White House and, in particular, at Barack Obama, because of decisions that were made in early December 2016 to suppress the presidential daily briefing and go ahead and order a new intelligence community assessment that ultimately would have much more aggressive conclusions about Trump and Russia," he told co-host Bill Hemmer.Last Friday, Gabbard declassified documents which she says implicate the former president and members of his national security team who "manufactured and politicized intelligence" to create the narrative that Russia was attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election despite information from the intelligence community stating otherwise.A declassified copy of the Dec. 8, 2016 presidential daily brief for President Obama obtained by Fox News Digital reads, in part, "We assess that Russian and criminal actors did not impact recent U.S. election results by conducting malicious cyber activities against election infrastructure."It continues: "Russian government-affiliated actors most likely compromised an Illinois voter registration database and unsuccessfully attempted the same in other states."OBAMA OFFICIALS USED DOSSIER TO PROBE, BRIEF TRUMP DESPITE KNOWING IT WAS UNVERIFIED 'INTERNET RUMOR'A bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation later found that, while Trump may not have accepted Russian help, Russia did meddle in some fashion. The chairman of the Intel Committee at the time then-Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who now serves as the top diplomat to the United States under Trump put out a statement that said, "The committee found absolutely no evidence that then-candidate Donald Trump or his campaign colluded with the Russian government to meddle in the 2016 election. What the committee did find, however, is very troubling. We found irrefutable evidence of Russian meddling."Taibbi said he has heard frequent complaints that the information released by Gabbard had not come out sooner."A former high-ranking Trump official said [to me] there was, 'So much corruption in the last Trump presidency that this shouldn't have been overlooked, that these documents should have come out,' but the overall sense I get is that everyone's happy that they finally are coming out, and they're looking forward to what is likely to come out this week," he said.Though Obama and his representatives did not respond to Fox News Digital's previous requests for comment, Democratic lawmakers have reacted to the development with their own series of statements.Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., a ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, criticized Gabbard's claims as "baseless.""Few episodes in our nations history have been investigated as thoroughly as the Intelligence Communitys warning in 2016 that Russia was interfering in the election," Himes said in a statement posted to X."Every legitimate investigation, including the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation, found no evidence of politicization and endorsed the findings of the 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment."Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, accused Gabbard of "weaponizing her position to amplify the president's election conspiracy theories."Fox News' Brooke Singman contributed to this report.

Trump demands end to cashless bail, says 'complete disaster' driving crime in cities, endangering police
President Donald Trump demanded cashless bail end immediately on Monday, citing crime in U.S. cities, as well as increased attacks on law enforcement."Crime in American Cities started to significantly rise when they went to CASHLESS BAIL. The WORST criminals are flooding our streets and endangering even our great law enforcement officers," Trump wrote on TRUTH Social."It is a complete disaster, and must be ended, IMMEDIATELY!" Trump wrote. The post was published as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem held a press conference in New York City after visiting a Customs and Border Protection officer who was shot while off-duty on Saturday night. The suspect is a previously deported Dominical national, who Noem said has a "rap sheet that is a mile long," has an active warrant against him in Massachusetts for armed robbery with a firearm, and who has been arrested in New York City four separate times.NOEM BLAMES 'SANCTUARY' POLICIES FOR MIGRANT ACCUSED OF SHOOTING OFF-DUTY CBP OFFICERNoem criticized the open border policies under former President Joe Biden, as well as sanctuary polices in New York City, Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago in particular in the wake of the shooting."When I look at what Mayor Adams has done to New York City, it breaks my heart to see the families that have suffered because of his policies," Noem said. "We can look across this country at other mayors. We look at Mayor Wu in Boston and what has happened there under her watch, what's happened in LA with the riots and the violence and the protests that have gone on because of Mayor Bass and what she has perpetuated. When you look at Mayor Johnson in Chicago and how devastating it is to live in that city in some of those poorest communities, how they suffer every single day with the violence that's in front of them."New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, has been a strong critic of the state's cashless bail law, which was enacted by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2019 and perpetuated under his successor, current Gov. Kathy Hochul. Cuomo, while campaigning for mayor, has noted the cashless bail law has faced amendments that increased judicial discretion in recent years, but he has defended criminal justice reform broadly as a correction of racial and income inequities.Adams, who has argued Cuomo-era bail reforms drove up recidivism rates, resulting in offenders repeatedly being arrested and released back on the streets, now faces the former governor in November's mayoral election. Adams and Cuomo are both independent candidates in the contest, where Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani is seen as the front-runner after his June primary win. Mamdani has promoted radical initiatives, such as eliminating all cash bail and abolishing prisons.LA MAYOR BASS DODGES QUESTION ON WHETHER ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN CITY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO STAYUnder his tenure, Cuomo pushed policies discouraging state agencies from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While Adams initially defended New York City's "sanctuary" status, he grew critical of the Biden administration amid surges of illegal immigrants arriving to the Big Apple from the southern border and has more recently cooperated with the Trump administration's border czar, Tom Homan, on immigration enforcement.DHS reported last week that ICE officials are facing an 830% increase in assaults in the first six months of Trump's term compared to the same time period last year.Illinois, meanwhile, broadly eliminated all cash bail in 2023 with a provision included in law known as the SAFE-T Act. The provision, dubbed the Pretrial Fairness Act, was endorsed by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who argued at the time that "cash bail does not make communities safer" and "has simply exacerbated existing inequities and disparities in the criminal legal system," according to FOX 32 Chicago.Former and current Chicago-area police officials recently spoke to FOX 32 condemning the SAFE-T Act, arguing the elimination of cash bail helps criminals and harms police officers. In Los Angeles County, what's known as the "Pre-Arraignment Release Protocol (PARP)" took effect in October 2023, eliminating cash bail for most nonviolent offenses. It was met with an initial wave of lawsuits from 12 cities who argued the zero-bail switch jeopardized public safety. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County in March defended the protocol in a report that argued judges can conduct individualized risk assessments based on a suspect's criminal history, flight risk and offense severity.
