Woman found guilty in mushroom murder mystery that left three family members dead after meal
A woman who poisoned four family members, killing three of them, is facing life in prison after a jury found her guilty of murder-by-mushrooms.Erin Patterson invited her estranged husbands mother, father, aunt and uncle to lunch at her home in the southern state of Victoria in Australia in July 2023 and served them beef Wellington made with death cap mushrooms.Patterson, aged 50, told police she must have included the deadly fungi in her recipe by accident. But the trial proved she had lied and tried to hide evidence of her culinary crime by disposing of incriminating evidence.During the 10-week trial, which dominated headlines Down Under, the jury heard how Patterson had invited the family for lunch under the pretext of revealing a cancer diagnosis.WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FDA'S PARALYTIC SHELLFISH POISONING WARNINGEstranged husband Simon decided at the last minute not to attend, and Patterson was originally also accused of his attempted murder, although she never faced those charges in court.Google searches for beef Wellington recipes have soared in Australia over the last few months, as the trial captivated the country.During Pattersons trial, the jury saw pictures of the leftover beef Wellington and heard how family members had gotten sick and gone to the local hospital, where mushroom poisoning was quickly diagnosed. They also heard from the sole survivor, her estranged husband's uncle Ian Wilkinson, who testified that Erin had served them beef Wellington with green beans and mashed potatoes in individual portions, but served herself on a different plate. No traces of the deadly mushrooms were found in her system, and she told police that she was bulimic and had vomited after eating the food.A doctor who treated the poisoning victims says he had taken one look at her and known something was wrong. In an interview with Australias ABC News, Doctor Chris Webster said he had asked Erin Patterson where she had gotten the mushrooms.COUPLE CHARGED IN ALLEGED CYANIDE PLOT TO KILL EX-GIRLFRIENDS; AGENTS HOSPITALIZED DURING SEARCH"When she didn't respond in a way that instantly would have explained it as a tragic accident, that's it, from that moment in my mind, she was guilty," he said."She was evil and very smart to have planned it all and carried it out, but didn't quite dot every 'i' and cross every 't.'"Although prosecutors couldnt find a specific motive for the murders, Australian media outlets have reported that Erin, who had worked as an accountant and also an air traffic controller, had resented her ex-husband, Simon, for not doing his share of household chores. In messages to online friends, the triple-murderer said she had had to hire a cleaner because of Simons refusal to help out around the house. The couple have two children together.Prosecutors untangled her web of lies about the poisonings, including her claims that she had never been foraging for mushrooms, and that she didnt own a food dehydrator. The kitchen appliance was later found at a nearby landfill site, where Erin had taken it to try and dispose of evidence. Police found death cap mushroom residue inside.Pattersons legal team has 28 days to appeal the conviction. If there is no appeal, she will likely be sentenced in August and faces life behind bars.

"Parks and Recreation" star Nick Offerman said that only "dumb people" think that his beloved character, Ron Swanson, would support President Donald Trump during an interview with IndieWire on Friday.Offerman told the outlet that he went directly to the show's creator, Mike Schur, and Schur told him that Swanson would have "despised Trump" and thought he was an "absolute idiot.""Dumb people insist that Ron Swanson wouldve voted for Trump. And I dont deign to answer myself. I take it to Mike Schur, the main creator of Ron, and he said, Swanson wouldve despised Trump, because Ron loved capitalism. And Trump made the stupidest move you could make as a capitalist, which is to go into public service," the actor said.ACTOR NICK OFFERMAN TALKS HIS LOVE FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORS AT NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVALOfferman added that Swanson wouldn't have voted for Trump because "hes disrespectful to women and many others," which would have struck a major nerve with his character because he's a "good person.""Parks and Recreation" ran from 2009 to 2015 on NBC.As noted by Variety, Offerman has always been protective of Swanson, defending his character's values after Michael Flynn Jr., son of retired Army lieutenant general and Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn, used a clip of Swanson to mock Pride Month.Flynn Jr. posted a clip of the beloved character throwing a rainbow flag into a dumpster, paired with a caption that read: "Just wanted to post how I feel about pride month."CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREThe original clip featured Swanson throwing his work computer into the dumpster, and Offerman was livid that somebody would use his character to make an edgy joke during Pride Month."Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f---," he shot back on X. "Happy Pride."Offerman was referring to the season finale of "Parks and Recreation" where Swanson served as the best man to his gay hairdresser, Typhoon.

Trump assassination suspect floats bizarre prisoner swap in letter to judge, asks why he cant be executed
Ryan Routh, the accused would-be assassin of President Donald Trump, has written an unusual letter to the judge asking why the death penalty isnt on the table and proposing that he be included in a prisoner swap with U.S. adversaries, even suggesting he be sent to freeze in Siberia in exchange for a Ukrainian soldier.Routh, who also said that he now wants to represent himself at trial, makes the outlandish requests in a letter to U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon who is overseeing the federal criminal case against him. Routh is charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump, assaulting a federal officer and multiple firearms violations for the Sept. 15 incident in Florida, the second attempted assassinationplot against Trump in a matter of months."Why is the death penalty not allowed? At nearly 60, a life of nothingness without love what is the point? Why is it not all or nothing?" Routh wrote in the letter on the case docket.WHO IS RYAN WESLEY ROUTH: ALLEGED GUNMAN AT TRUMP GOLF CLUB"I had wished for a prisoner swap with Hamas, Iran... or China for Jimmy Lai or one of the 40 others, or to freeze to death in Siberia in exchange for a Ukrainian soldier... so I could die being of some use and save all this court mess."He then sarcastically adds that the judge could send him away, which would give Trump a symbolic win."Perhaps you [Judge Cannon] have the power to trade me away... An easy diplomatic victory for Trump to give an American he hates to China, Iran, or North Korea... everyone wins."Routh blasted his legal team, accusing them of ignoring his questions, refusing to write to him and undermining him."It was ridiculous from the outset to consider a random stranger that knows nothing of who I am to speak for me... I will be representing myself moving forward," Routh wrote. "They do not want the case and I no longer want to listen to how horrible a person I am I can beat my own self up; I do not need help.""Best I walk alone."WHO WAS THOMAS CROOKS? ONE YEAR LATER, MOTIVE AND MISSED WARNINGS HAUNT TRUMP RALLY SHOOTINGThe letter was filled with self-loathing and despair, and he also apologized to the judge and the courts for having initially accepted court-appointed attorneys but has now chosen to fire them."It was ridiculous from the outset to consider a random stranger that knows nothing of who I am to speak for me... I am sorry a childish mistake." He wrote. "I am so sorry, I know this makes your life harder."Sorry to expend everyones time on one so insignificant and useless."He also veered into a reflection on his own personal dignity."On that topic of character, that my attorneys said we shall never tread, I am of the thought what else is there if we do not have any character, morals, ethics, any substance at all, why live, why argue anything," Routh wrote. In the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 15, prosecutors say Routh set up a sniper hideout near Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Armed with a military-grade SKS rifle that he had obtained illegally, Routh is accused of positioning himself in anticipation of Trumps arrival to play golf. Before Trump came into range, Routh was spotted by Secret Service agents. When they confronted him, the agents opened fire, and Routh fled the scene, abandoning his rifle, officials said.During his attempted escape, he carried a written escape plan, multiple burner phones, fake IDs and stolen license plates, according to authorities. He was later arrested in Martin County the same day.Fox News Sarah Rumpf-WhittenandJake Gibson contributed to this report.

Meet Chinas man in Lima who jetted over to US to collect trains donated by Biden admin
A key China ally with presidential ambitions in Peru traveled late last month to California to participate in a sending-off ceremony for a batch of trains donated by the Biden administration, according to reporting by Peruvian news outlets.Peruvian outlet Justo Medio reported at the time that Lima Mayor Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who is rumored to be considering a run for president of Peru in 2026, was in California late last month to discuss the transport of a batch of CalTrain locomotives, which were donated to Lima by the U.S. government under the Biden administration.Nate Picarsic and Emily de La Bruyre, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), recently published a study on Lopez Aliagas "deep" financial ties to China through his company PeruRail, which has seen its revenue rise to over $65 million per year due to increased shipments from Minera Las Bambas, a Chinese-owned joint venture counting state-owned mining giant China Minmetals as its majority backer. The report alleged that China has been "cultivating" Lopez Aliaga for higher office in Peru in hopes of growing its mineral and battery supplies harvesting in South America. The report goes so far as to dub Lopez Aliaga "Chinas man in Peru."CHINESE EDUCATOR WITH SEVERAL CCP TIES COZIES UP TO TOP NEW YORK DEMOCRATS: 'OUR OLD FRIEND WHO LISTENS'"Chinas mining presence in Peru is a direct boon for Lpez Aliaga," the report said, giving Beijing "a powerful beachhead in Peru."The report said, "This leaves an influential Peruvian political leader aligned with and linked to China, its resource project, and the broader Belt and Road Initiative of which it is part."In the last several years, Chinese investment in South America, and Peru especially, has significantly increased.According to NBC News, China invested $1.3 billion in a massive deepwater port in Chancay, Peru, just north of Lima.Chinese President Xi Jinping participated in the ports opening ceremony in 2024, during which he called the port the start of Chinas 21st-century maritime Silk Road, according to the outlet.FLORIDA AG SUBPOENAS CHINESE COMPANY OVER 'COMPROMISED' MEDICAL DEVICES THAT CAN TRANSMIT PRIVATE DATAAccording to Picarsic, China has also been investing heavily in Limas infrastructure, most notably dominating its electricity industry, all of which Lopez Aliaga has been a "linchpin" piece in moving Chinese dominance forward. Now, with Lopez Aliaga possibly entering Perus presidential race, Picarsic explained that this all "looks like a telltale sign of China's handiwork."He also called the U.S.s donation of trains to Peru "too little, too late" to combat Chinas growing influence in the region.SENATORS RICKETTS, FETTERMAN UNITE AGAINST CHINA'S QUIET INVASION OF US FARMLAND"We're coming with a donation of some number of decommissioned rail cars. But this guy, who is in cahoots with China, who's coming to take them and he's taking them back to run on Chinese rail feeding into a Chinese port, helping to move goods from a Chinese mine."Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken participated in a train-donation ceremony last November in Lima, Peru, where he praised the project as an opportunity to "strengthen the ties between Peru and the United States" and said the trains "are not just a symbol, but the practical manifestation of possibilities the possibilities that come when we connect to each other.""This agreement is a testament to the strength and durability of the U.S. and Perus longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship," he added. "I am so proud to have Caltrain be a member of that mutually beneficial relationship."
