WWW.FOXNEWS.COM'Nation's Report Card' shows alarming decline in science, math and reading scoresThe latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), commonly called the "Nation's Report Card," revealed that 12th-graders' scores in math and reading have hit record lows, continuing a yearslong decline. The updated testing data was released Tuesday and reflected results from tests administered between January and March 2024.As The Washington Post noted, the declines began before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education nationwide and have continued since. Lawmakers had hoped scores would rebound in 2024, but the results underscored ongoing challenges in the U.S. education system.ILLINOIS CHANGES BENCHMARKS THAT PROVED PROFICIENCY IN MATH, ENGLISH ON STANDARDIZED TESTSThe NAEP showed that nearly 45% of high school seniors scored "below basic" in math, the highest share since the current version of the test was introduced.Reading scores also fell, with nearly one-third of seniors testing below basic another record. The lowest-performing students recorded an average score of 224, 25 points lower than their peers in 1992."Scores for our lowest-performing students are at historic lows, continuing declines that began more than a decade ago. My predecessor warned of this trend and her predecessor warned of this trend as well, and now I am warning you about this trend," said Matthew Soldner, acting director of the Institute of Education Sciences, a research arm of the Department of Education. "These results should galvanize all of us to take concerted, focused action to accelerate student learning."The report also included eighth-graders' science scores, which dropped below 2019 levels, erasing gains made since the test began in 2009.THE WAR ON READING: CHILDREN IN THE CROSSHAIRSCLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREFollowing the release of the scores on Tuesday, Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said the results "confirm a devastating trend" which has continued "despite spending billions annually on numerous K-12 programs."In an appearance Tuesday on "America's Newsroom," McMahon agreed with Fox News host Dana Perino, wondering if the situation was a "national emergency." She added that she and President Donald Trump were on a mission to return education funding to the states."I do believe it is," McMahon said. "We are spending a ton of money on education. We've spent $3 trillion since the Department of Education was established, only to see scores continuing to decline. And that is just a trend we have to stop, and I think the money is not being spent where it needs to be spent, and that's in the states."While the Trump administration has proposed giving states more control over how they allocate federal education dollars, it has also requested that Congress cut overall spending on those programs. The National Center for Education Statistics which administers the tests faced layoffs and canceled contracts earlier this year as the Department of Government Efficiency made cuts at the Department of Education.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPSoldner, who works in the Education Department's research and data branch, told reporters on Monday that the cuts did not hinder the office's ability to analyze and report on these results, according to the Washington Post.0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMFugitive dad who hid 3 children in the wilderness for nearly 4 years killed in police shootoutA fugitive father who spent nearly four years on the run with his three young children was killed during a police shootout in New Zealand on Monday, bringing an end to one of the countrys most high-profile manhunts.Tom Phillips vanished into the Waikato wilderness with his children shortly before Christmas in 2021 following a dispute with their mother, who held sole custody, according to local officials.Police said Phillips was fatally shot during an attempted burglary at a supply store, where he was accompanied by one of his children. Phillips died at the scene, and his children Ember, now believed to be 9, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12 were safely recovered and are now in care, according to officials."This is an emotional development. To know the children are safe, and now receiving care after nearly four years, is an absolute relief,"Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said in a statement."We are grateful to see an end to what has been three years of torment for the childrens family."MANHUNT FOR TRAVIS DECKER INTENSIFIES AS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ASSUMES LEAD ROLE IN SEARCH FOR FATHERPolice were alerted around 2:30 a.m. local time Monday to a suspected break-in at a supply store in Piopio, a small town located in the North Islandwhere Phillips was believed to have been hiding out with his children. When officers spotted two people riding a four-wheeled bike near the scene of the burglary, they suspected Phillips was involved and deployed road spikes on a nearby street to intercept them, according to a police news release.Phillips opened fire on officers, striking one in the upper body and leaving him seriously injured. Police said they returned fire and killed Phillips. The child with him was unharmed and taken into custody, while the wounded officer was transported to a hospital for treatment.BONES DISCOVERED DURING LATEST MANHUNT FOR TRAVIS DECKER, WANTED IN DAUGHTERS' MURDERSLater that afternoon, officers discovered the remaining two children, a boy and a girl, alone at a makeshift camp about one mile from the scene of the shooting. Both were recovered unharmed, officials said.Authorities had long expressed concerns about the childrens welfare, saying they were being raised in isolation without access to formal schooling or healthcare.Despite several reported sightings in the Waikato region over the years, police efforts to locate the family had repeatedly come up empty.ABDUCTED BOY FEATURED IN NETFLIX 'UNSOLVED MYSTERIES' FOUND SAFE 7 YEARS AFTER CAPTURE: 'OVERWHELMED WITH JOY'Police said Phillips already faced charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding and unlawful possession of a firearm.Officials recovered three guns at the scene of the shooting, including the weapon he used to fire on officers, and found several more at his camp.Surveillance footage also captured him previously attempting to break into another retail store on Aug. 27.INSIDE THE DEADLY 'SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE' THAT SHATTERED A CONNECTICUT FAMILY'S WORLDThe childrens mother, Cat, described the news of Phillips death as bringing a "wave of complex emotions," according to local outlet RNZ."First and foremost, we are deeply relieved that for our tamariki this ordeal has come to an end," she said, using the Mori word for children. "[The children] have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.""They have endured a long and difficult journey, and we ask for privacy as we help them adjust and reintegrate into a stable and loving environment," she added.0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMAI meeting notes are recording your private conversationsArtificial intelligence has slipped quietly into our meetings. Zoom, Google Meet and other platforms now offer AI notetakers that listen, record and share summaries. At first, it feels like a helpful assistant. No more scrambling to jot down every point. But there's a catch. It records everything, including comments you never planned to share.Sign up for my FREE CyberGuy ReportGet my best tech tips, urgent security alerts and exclusive deals delivered straight to your inbox. Jokes, personal stories and even casual side comments often slip into the official meeting summaries. What might feel harmless in the moment, like teasing someone, chatting about lunch plans or venting about a frustrating errand, can suddenly reappear in a recap email sent to the whole group. In some cases, even affectionate nicknames or pet mishaps have shown up right alongside serious action items. These surprises can be funny in hindsight, but they highlight a bigger issue. AI notetakers don't separate casual conversation from work-related discussion. And once your words are written down, they can be saved, forwarded or even archived in ways you didn't intend. That means an offhand remark could live far longer than the meeting itself.AI AND LEARNING RETENTION: DOES CHATGPT HELP OR HURT?These tools work by recording conversations in real time and then generating automatic summaries. Zoom's AI Companion flags its presence with a diamond icon. Google Meet's version uses a pencil icon and an audio cue. Only meeting hosts can switch them on or off. That sounds transparent, but most people stop noticing the icons after a few minutes. Once the AI is running, it doesn't separate "work talk" from "side chatter." The result? Your casual remarks can end up in a summary sent to colleagues or even clients. And mistakes happen. An AI notetaker might mishear a joke, twist sarcasm into something serious or drop a casual remark into notes where it looks out of place. Stripped of tone and context, those words can come across very differently once they're written down.META AIS NEW CHATBOT RAISES PRIVACY ALARMSEven if you use these tools, you can take control of what they capture. A few simple habits will help you reduce the risks while still getting the benefits.Always check for the flashing icon or audio cue that signals an AI notetaker is active. If you're the host, decide when AI should run. Limit its use to important meetings where notes are truly necessary. Many platforms let you control who receives the notes. Make sure only the right people get access.Need to share a side comment? Send it as a direct message rather than saying it out loud.Keep casual conversations off recorded calls. If you need to catch up, wait until the AI is off.If you're not the host, confirm that everyone is comfortable with AI note-taking. Setting expectations up front prevents awkward situations later.Check meeting notes before forwarding them. Edit or trim out personal chatter so only useful action items remain.Find out whether transcripts are saved in the cloud or on your device. WWW.FOXNEWS.COMSEN. TIM KAINE: Why America's rights depend on laws, not divine decrees or religious authorityBishop Robert Barron recently wrote an op-ed attacking me for a point I made during a Senate hearing about the origin of legal rights. The hearing featured testimony from a witness who claimed that such rights come from the Creator, "not from our laws, not from our governments." I find that view, which Bishop Barron apparently accepts, deeply disturbing. Of course, I embrace the view, expressed so clearly in the Declaration of Independence authored by Virginian Thomas Jefferson, that all people are endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights, including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But I learned well during my time working with Catholic missionaries in Honduras under a military dictatorship that rights are essentially meaningless unless they are protected by law. Later, my 17 years of practice as a civil rights lawyer in Virginia taught me the same basic lesson.Where does the right to trial by jury come from? The right to bear firearms? Freedom of the press? The right to be free of cruel and unusual punishments? The right to not have your property taken without due process of law? The right to peacefully assemble and petition government for redress of grievances? The right to vote?DEM SENATOR COMPARES AMERICAN FOUNDING PRINCIPLE TO IRANS THEOCRACY: EXTREMELY TROUBLING'These are not rights clearly laid out in the Bible or other sacred texts. And they arent rights accepted in all societies worldwide. But they are rights guaranteed in the United States because they are specifically included in our Constitution and statutes. Jefferson recognized as much in the Declaration, explaining that democratic government is instituted "to secure these rights" for all.We can now agree that slavery violated the right of all to liberty. But the natural right meant nothing until the Civil War and passage of the 13th Amendment outlawed the monstrous institution.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONUnless protected by law, everyday people cannot rest secure that their critical rights will be protected. Claiming that all rights come from the Creator and not from laws or government leaves the door wide open for dictators to ignore the law and simply proclaim that they are doing Gods will. That has happened throughout history and its happening today in many parts of the world. Its one reason why America cast off the British monarchy 250 years ago we dont accept a "divine right of kings" to set, change or destroy the rules. And we never should accept such tyranny.Bishop Barron should thank God that his rights, and the rights of all Americans, are protected by law. When it comes to the important business of ensuring legal rights, we should all heed the wisdom often attributed to St. Augustine: "Pray as though everything depends upon God. Work as though everything depends upon you."0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMCharlotte City Council member calls out 'paper-thin' crime statistics after Ukrainian refugee's killingThe fatal stabbing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte train has intensified Americas public safety debate, but as President Donald Trump floats bringing National Guard troops into cities across the U.S. to mitigate such crime, one city council member says it isn't the solution for Charlotte at least for now."[I don't want to see the Guard brought in] at this time simply because crime in Charlotte statistically is down like it is around most of the country," Edwin B. Peacock III, a Republican serving on the Charlotte City Council, told Fox News on Tuesday.Peacock argued that statistics don't reflect the lived reality many residents experience, however.CHARLOTTE TRAIN STABBING PUTS NORTH CAROLINA COMMUTERS ON EDGE AFTER RANDOM ATTACK"This is a paper-thin statistic that most people are like CMPD [Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department] is holding onto, and I just know having been in this position before, that it's not something that you can take for granted."If someone doesn't feel safe in our city, statistics aren't going to help a victim like this," he added.Peacock acknowledged Charlotte does have a "crime problem," but posed solutions aside from bringing in National Guard troops to address it."You have to be serious about what you can actually do about this type of crime," he said."You've pointed it out clearly through the court system where there's been a failure there, but also to help enforce the actual laws that are on the books."PATEL AND DUFFY SIGNAL CHARLOTTE TRAIN MURDER UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION WITH NATIONAL IMPLICATIONSThe suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., has a history of arrests going back more than a decade, including convictions for felony larceny and felony breaking and entering in 2013, and a 2015 conviction for robbery with a dangerous weapon that sent him to prison for more than six years, according to records obtained by Fox News Digital.Chilling surveillance video released by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) shows 23-year-old Zarutska step onto the Lynx Blue line just after 9:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 and claim a seat in front of Brown.Brown can be seen unfolding a knife before abruptly standing and stabbing Zarutska three times, including once in the neck. Outlets pause the video before the actual stabbing occurs, however.Peacock said city council members have received a "deluge" of mail in their inboxes, and he's urging the members to support the mayor's initiative to put more cops on trains and to crack down on fare evasion. He noted that Charlottes light rail operates on an open platform system, meaning theres little enforcement of who actually pays to ride."The message to most riders is that this is a free ride, and its not," he said. "If you dont pay, you wont ride."Fox News' Bradford Betz and Sarah Rumpf-Whitten contributed to this report.0 Comments 0 Shares 10 Views 0 Reviews
