Gov. Newsom doing 'political calculus' ahead of Menendez brothers resentencing decision
The Menendez brothers are one step closer to seeing life outside prison walls as they face the next hurdle, a parole board hearing, in their bid for release from the 1989 shotgun slayings of their parents in Beverly Hills.Criminal defense attorney Sam Bassett of Minton, Bassett, Flores & Carsey in Austin, Texas, told Fox News Digital that the spotlight will now shift to the state Parole Board and Gov. Gavin Newsom."There is no doubt that Newsom is doing some political calculus on this decision," he said.In Bassetts view, the Parole Board "will consider input from all interested persons, especially the victims family members," weigh the results of the Comprehensive Risk Assessments (CRA), and require the brothers to demonstrate their remorse and acceptance of responsibility.MENENDEZ BROTHERS COULD GET FREEDOM UNDER CALIFORNIA LAW SIGNED BY GAVIN NEWSOM: EXPERTFox News Digital reached out to Newsom's office, which referred to a news conference Wednesday in which he spoke briefly about the parole process for the Erik and Lyle Menendez and said the process is still unfolding."We started a process, as you know, which was intended to help inform the judge about the resentencing of the risk assessment. We thought that would be prudent to do before any resentencing," he said. "That process has unfolded over the course of the last number of months, and forensic psychologists did an assessment of the risk of each individual brother."Certain details of those risk assessments, which have not been made public, were presented during part of Tuesday's resentencing hearing. The analysis from those reports typically includes what led a person to commit the crime, behavior in prison and the likelihood of recidivism. Both brothers admitted to killing their parents, Mary "Kitty" and Jos Menendez, in a gruesome 1989 shotgun massacre inside their Beverly Hills home. Until Tuesday's resentencing hearing, they had maintained that their actions were self-defense from a lifetime of physical and sexual abuse by their parents.SIGN UP TO GET THE TRUE CRIME NEWSLETTERColorado-based criminal defense attorney Eric Faddis outlined the technical hurdles that the Menendez brothers must clear before the Board can begin to review their cases.CALIFORNIA GOV NEWSOM SETS MENENDEZ BROTHERS PAROLE BOARD HEARING DATE IN BID FOR CLEMENCYThanks to the brothers' recent resentencing under Californias youthful offender law, Erik and Lyle are now eligible for parole "because the crimes were committed before the brothers were 26," Faddis told Fox News Digital. Erik was 18 and Lyle was 21 when they murdered their parents."There are no other eligibility requirements the brothers have to meet," he said, meaning the parole board "can now consider whether release is appropriate."Faddis echoed Bassett's comments that the board will weigh "the seriousness of the crime," any prior criminal history, participation in rehabilitation programs, signs of remorse, and the prospect of a stable living situation upon release."In this case, all living family members of the victims are in support of release," he said. "The board may consider any positive contributions to society the brothers made while incarcerated, which include advocating for child sex abuse survivors."When asked how the gravity of a double homicide factors into decisions, even decades later, Faddis said: "A double homicide is about as serious as it gets."He acknowledged that while the alleged abuse by the father may temper the assessment of the fathers killing, "it does not have the same mitigating effect with respect to the mothers murder."FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON XFaddis predicted that a recent statutory change may benefit the brothers' bid for release. Under Penal Code 4801, the Parole Board must now expressly consider "whether the crime resulted from the inmates victimization," he said. GET THE LATEST FROM THE FOX NEWS TRUE CRIME HUB"Many believe that such prior abuse is given much more weight now than it was in the 1990s, both legally and socially," he said. The brothers are set to appear before the Parole Board via video on June 13, 2025, at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPThe board will either recommend or veto the brothers' release. Newsom has the final say over whether they should go free.

President Donald Trump and the judiciary's conflicts are coming to a head
The more aggressive elements of President Trumps immigration agenda have run into resistance from federal district judges. These courts question the administrations expedited deportations of illegal Venezuelan migrants with minimal, or no, due process. But a more fundamental constitutional question lies beneath the struggle over immigration. Federal judges that block the deportations risk interference with the executive branchs constitutional authority over foreign relations and national security. At the same time, if the White House presses his claims of unilateral power too far, it jeopardizes the deference that the judiciary has long offered presidents in their management of national security. The president and the judiciary are coming to a head because of decisions by two separate federal district judges last week. On May 1, Judge Fernando Rodriguez of Texas held that Trump could not claim power under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to remove members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang (TdA) to El Salvador. On May 6, Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Colorado agreed and also enjoined the executive branch from any further deportation of Venezuelans without a hearing before a judge. While only temporary orders, no federal courts have ever before overruled the decision of a president or congress that the United States has suffered an attack or invasion.Part of the blame for this executive-judicial conflict also rests with the Trump administrations unprecedented use of the Alien Enemies Act. The act authorizes the president to detain and expel aliens of "a hostile nation or government" with which the United States is in a "declared war" or by which it has suffered an "invasion or predatory incursion." The United States had only used the act during the declared War of 1812 and World Wars I and II.VENEZUELAN GOVERNMENT USES TREN DE ARAGUA AS PROXIES TO UNDERMINE US PUBLIC SAFETY, FBI ASSESSMENT FINDSBut on March 15, President Trump sent TdA members to El Salvador under his authority under the Act. He proclaimed that the gang was conducting an invasion or predatory incursion through "irregular warfare" such as "drug trafficking" and "mass illegal migration" into the United States. Trump claimed that TdA is "closely aligned with, and indeed has infiltrated," the Venezuelan government, so as to meet the Acts requirement of an invasion by a "hostile nation or government." The White House made the extraordinary claim that a gang has risen to the level of a foreign government that is conducting an invasion or predatory incursion into the United States.Regardless of the challenge of showing this to be true factually, district judges have made the mistake of concluding this is a question for the courts to resolve. On some important questions, the Constitution reserves judgment to the elected branches of government alone. As Chief Justice John Marshall conceded in Marbury v. Madison, which first announced the power of judicial review, "the President is invested with certain important political powers, in the exercise of which he is to use his own discretion." For his decisions, "he is accountable only to his country in his political character, and to his own conscience." His decision cannot be questioned in court because "the subjects are political." These issues "respect the nation, not individual rights, and being entrusted to the executive, the decision of the executive is conclusive."CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONWar raises exactly the sort of "political questions," as the Supreme Court has come to describe them, that fall outside judicial competence. The Constitution vests the president with the executive power and makes him commander in chief of the armed forces. Congress has the power to raise and fund the armed forces and to declare war. The courts have no power to direct the elected branches in their exercise of these authorities.Federal courts have never questioned the decisions of the elected branches over whether a war or invasion has occurred. In the Prize Cases, for example, the Supreme Court would not second-guess President Abraham Lincolns awesome decision to wage war to stop secession. "Whether the President in fulfilling his duties as Commander in Chief" was justified in launching military operations against the South, the Court declared, was "to be decided by him." The Court could declare that it must reserve to the President the decisions on the force to be used to "the political department of the Government to which this power was entrusted." Following this precedent, federal judge rejected lawsuits seeking a halt to the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Afghanistan, or Iraq. But in the Texas and Colorado cases, federal judges have overturned the judiciarys deference on war. They rejected President Trumps claim that Venezuela had launched an invasion of the United States using TdA as an arm of its military. The federal appeals courts, and ultimately the Supreme Court, must review these decisions as soon as possible. They must recognize that trial judges lack the competence to review the sensitive information and judgments necessary to make the more dire national security decisions. Courts excel at resolving cases or controversies with formal rules of pleading, evidence, and deliberation. They are ill-equipped to judge the probabilities and risks that govern the world of national security.

From trad-wives to Trump, why Gen Z is embracing the 1980s attitude of fashion excess
Dress for the lifestyle you want, not the lifestyle you have what was once a philosophy synonymous with 1980s fashion culture is now reemerging in Gen Z form.Writer Emilia Petrarca, in The Cut earlier this year, described the up-and-coming trend called "Boom Boom" fashion. She cited fashion forecaster Sean Monahan, who said that the "fetishization of the past" the trend employs is reminiscent of the in-your-face boldness and "visible hierarchy" of the 1980s and early 1990s.Though branded "gilded and greedy" in the piece, the idea is rooted in excess and favors thinness (with weight-loss drugs taking partial blame). It also rejects some of the more progressive fashion ideologies that pushed back against the first Trump term body inclusivity, gender fluidity and DEI, to name a few.NEW YORK TIMES GUEST ESSAY SUGGESTS FASHION INDUSTRY HAS GIVEN UP ON WOKE VALUESThe article says the effort to "cosplay as the one percent" hearkens back to the Alexis Carrington Colby-esque power suits Joan Collins donned on the primetime soap opera "Dynasty" during the 80s or what mightve been seen in other hits from the decade, like "Miami Vice."Then, shoulder-padded blazers, Nolan Miller gowns, furs, elegant hats with netting veils, gold jewelry and other aspects of the wealthy or "preppy" look inspired Gen Xers to aspire to something beyond their means and try dressing the part. Now, "boom boom" replaces minimalism with similar boldness boxy power suits, loafers, luxurious furs, ties, animal prints, vibrant colors.Petrarca relays a concern that the up-and-coming movement "reads as a thumbs-up for greed," but others say it's more about standing out, expressing oneself and showcasing joy. Some speculate it's Gen Z's way of ushering in their own "Roaring Twenties" with a bold pushback against the longstanding minimalism that painted aesthetics neutral and reflected the sentiment of the times.MET GAGA 2025: KIM KARDASHIAN, HAILEY BIEBER AND OTHER STARS LEAD RISQU FASHION MOMENTS AT AFTER-PARTIESThe change isn't isolated to the U.S., either. The UK Sun writes that the over-the-top trend is driving a surge in social media searches for vintage furs, namely on TikTok, where videos about vintage fur coats have skyrocketed by 243% in the past year, and Google searches for the same topic have spiked by 688% since January 2023."Gen Z are done with quiet luxury and minimalist outfits that say, Im rich, but I dont need you to know," the outlet said, noting in the piece that dressing in luxury makes the wearer feel "confident" and "optimistic about the future."Elle UK writes that the trend comes amid a "cost of living crisis" and a newfound focus on "male-coded values" that allegedly come with the second Trump administration, citing the rise of trad wives (women living as ultra-feminine traditional housewives) as evidence.GEN Z BRANDED AS THE MOST GULLIBLE GENERATION AFTER NEW ANALYSIS OF MEDIA HABITSBut some getting on top of the trend might be using the lavish expression to ease their distaste for the lengthy financial struggles many have faced in recent years as well as the dull, drab malaise of the pandemic era that saw people dressing in ultra-casual wear every time they stepped out the door. The outlet writes, "If quiet luxury was about a subtle, discreet display of wealth, this is the total opposite and we saw it all over the Autumn/Winter 2025 catwalks."It goes on to pinpoint certain celebrities who already appear to be onboard with the trend with some of their fashion choices a dark tartan blazer on Pedro Pascal and Parker Posey's white Gucci handbag paired with a Gucci fur coat.Another instance commonly cited by outlets is singer Chappell Roan, 27, who donned a boxy navy suit, tie and slicked-back hair for her recent single "The Giver."

How to thwart China and end European freeloading on Americans
Europe is trying to push American companies out of the European market by assaulting the U.S. with discriminatory taxes and regulations. Its time to put a stop to their freeloading.Europes reckless actions embolden Americas rivals like China and Russia. European bureaucrats have imposed anti-free speech regulations such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the anti-American Digital Markets Act (DMA) as blunt instruments against U.S. workers and businesses. This results in millions of dollars in fines and taxes fueling the EU welfare state at the expense of America. The EU is biting the hand that feeds its digital economy while pretending to champion fairness. This hypocrisy must end.Europe must pivot toward collaboration with the U.S., not confrontation, to counter the long-term threat: Chinese dominance.WHY US MUST ASSERT INDUSTRIAL DOMINANCE IN LIGHT OF CHINA-EUROPE TIESEuropes DSA and DMA target American companies. French officials even dubbed these laws the "GAFA tax" as a direct critique of Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon. These laws impose stringent rules and hefty fines that purposefully clobber U.S. companies. While European bureaucrats claim neutrality, the bias is obvious. American firms get hit while European firms conveniently escape scrutiny. This is not regulation; its non-tariff protectionism disguised as principle. Europe benefits from U.S.-built platforms, including cloud services, AI models and digital infrastructure, while punishing the innovators who created them.THE EU WANTS TO CONTROL AMERICAN BUSINESSES. THIS NEW BILL MIGHT BE THE ONLY THING THAT CAN STOP ITOver 80% of Europes digital technologies are imported, primarily from the U.S., yet the EU seems determined to penalize the very partnersfueling its digital economy. The DSAs vague content moderation rules empower unelected bureaucrats to censor online discourse, chilling expression under the guise of combating "harmful" content. The Trump administration is right: At the 2025 Munich Security Conference, Vice President JD Vance warned that Europe risks alienating American innovators and undermining shared democratic values.By imposing speech controls that clash with U.S. free expression principles, Europe not only creates a rift between allies but also plays into the hands of authoritarian regimes.VANCE IS RIGHT ABOUT FREE SPEECH. THATS WHAT MAKES EU AND US LEFTISTS SO MADEuropes pursuit of "digital sovereignty" through initiatives called "Gaia-X" and "EuroStack" highlights its freeloading on American innovation. Gaia-X, a French-German government attempt to establish a European cloud ecosystem, has failed to match U.S. companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Google.EuroStack is an even costlier EU government project. It seeks to build a comprehensive European digital infrastructure, including chips and AI. It is backed by over 300 billion euros in public subsidies.EU bureaucrats rely heavily on taxpayer-funded investments to replicate what American companies achieve through private initiative. This is not true sovereignty; itssubsidizing inefficiencywhile benefiting from the U.S.s decades of investment.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONAmerican national security is at stake as China is relentless in its pursuit to become the worlds tech superpower. Beijing is filing more AI patents and deploying AI at a scale that surpasses both the U.S. and Europe. Its state-driven model, unburdened by the democratic values Europe claims to uphold, poses a threat to dominating global digital infrastructure.America and Europe must stand united against this threat. A divided West onlystrengthens Communist China.Europe must abandon its discriminatory freeloading mindset and collaborate with America. A joint U.S.-EU tech agenda could accelerate innovation in AI, quantum computing and defense technologies with the goal of surpassing Chinas authoritarian model.Every euro spent on anti-American regulations or duplicative projects is a euro not invested in countering Chinas technological ambitions. Europes leaders must recognize their role in escalating trade tensions and commit to a unified front. Common ingredient in energy drinks linked to blood cancer growth, study finds
A common ingredient in some foods and drinks has been linked to an increased risk of blood cancers.Taurine a non-essential amino acid that also occurs naturally in the bone marrow, brain, heart and muscles was found to promote the growth of leukemia cells, according to a study by Wilmot Cancer Institute investigators at the University of Rochester in New York. The compound is also found in meats, fish and eggs, as well as some energy drinks and protein powders.BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS: COMMON TYPES, SIGNS AND TREATMENT OPTIONS"The key takeaway from this study is that taurine can be used by leukemia cells to promote cancer progression," Jeevisha Bajaj, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Genetics and a member of Wilmots Cancer Microenvironment research program, told Fox News Digital."Developing new methods to block the cancer cells ability to take in taurine may improve outcomes for leukemia patients."The scientists made the discovery by happenstance as they were investigating the bone marrow with an eye toward improving treatments for blood cancer, according to a press release from the university."Our finding that taurine can be produced by the bone marrow microenvironment was completely unexpected and therefore surprising," Bajaj said. "No one had shown this before, and it added critical information to studies of the bone marrow microenvironment, where blood cancers arise and expand."KIDS WHO CONSUME ENERGY DRINKS ARE MORE PRONE TO MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS, STUDY FINDSThe taurine triggers cancer growth in leukemia cells by promoting a process called glycolysis, which breaks down glucose to produce energy. In particular, taurine fuels certain types of cancer that emerge from blood stem cells in the bone marrow, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), the release stated. The findings were published in the journal Nature."We are very excited about these studies because they demonstrate that targeting uptake by myeloid leukemia cells may be a possible new avenue for treatment of these aggressive diseases," said Bajaj.TERMINAL COLON CANCER PATIENT SAVED BY BREAKTHROUGH TREATMENT"Our work suggests that developing and testing effective drugs that can impede leukemia cells from using taurine could lead to new treatment approaches for these deadly cancers."The study did have some limitations, according to the researchers."While we can find that taurine levels are high in the bone marrow of mice with leukemia compared to healthy mice, we do not have any evidence on taurine levels in humans with acute myeloid leukemia," Bajah noted. "This is something we hope to study in the future."Looking ahead, the researchers also plan to study how myelodysplastic syndromes lead to acute leukemia.Based on the findings, the scientists recommend that patients with leukemia speak with their healthcare providers before adding any new supplements or foods rich in taurine to their diet."Since taurine is a common ingredient in energy drinks and is often provided as a supplement to mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy, our work suggests that it may be of interest to carefully consider the benefits of supplemental taurine in leukemia patients," the researchers concluded in the paper.Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health and Fox News senior medical analyst, was not involved in the study but commented on the findings."The study from the University of Rochester determined that leukemia cells in the bone marrow rely on the amino acid taurine that they dont make themselves," he told Fox News Digital. "Future therapies promise to block the uptake of taurine into leukemia cells."Further research is needed to determine the exact process for blocking taurine, according to Siegel.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER"This is preliminary, but marks an important link between diet and cancer."The study was primarily funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, all of which are part of the National Institutes of Health. The American Society of Hematology, the Leukemia Research Foundation and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also provided support. Some popular energy drinks list taurine as an ingredient."There is concern that high-powered energy drinks containing too much taurine could fuel leukemia cells," Siegel told Fox News Digital."But at the same time, there is no evidence that these drinks cause the conversion of regular bone marrow cells into leukemia cells."As the body naturally produces taurine, additional supplementation especially from energy drinks is "often unnecessary," according to Dr. Hooman Melamed, a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon and sports medicine expert based in Marina Del Rey, California."From a clinical perspective, I always advise patients to give their bodies what they need, but not to overload them with substances they don't," Melamed, who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital. In general, Melamed said he recommends avoiding energy drinks altogether, especially those containing many synthetic additives or excessive ingredients. For more Health articles, visitwww.foxnews.com/health"Youll often find 20+ components in these products many of which you cant pronounce. That alone is a red flag," he cautioned."If you dont recognize whats in your food or drink, its probably not something your body needs."

Trump targets northern border security as Canada's 'open border' policies create new threats
Canada has long been a trusted northern neighbor to the United States. But after a decade of radical progressive rule, it is clear that Canadas approach to border security is putting both American and Canadian lives at risk. With the recent election of Prime Minister Mark Carney, it appears Canadians have chosen more of the same: a failed progressive agenda riddled with open-border policies. When President Donald Trump won in 2024, he was given a mandate by the American people: secure the border and protect our communities. Under his leadership, southern border encounters have dropped to historic lows, drug seizures have surged, and violent transnational criminal networks have been dismantled.President Trumps decisive actions, like signing the Laken Riley Act to detain and deport criminal illegal immigrants, have restored safety and stability to American communities.TRUMP HAS A SECRET WEAPON TO DEFEAT ACTIVIST JUDGES ON IMMIGRATIONBut as progress is made along the southern border, we must not take our attention off the growing threats along our northern border.Canadas open-border policies and lax immigration controls have made it a pipeline for criminals and traffickers seeking a new entry point into the U.S. Criminal organizations have created fentanyl and nitazine synthesis labs to bolster the drug trade.Chinese nationals have turned to the north as a way to smuggle illicit products and substances into the United States, and weve seen a growing presence of Mexican cartels operating fentanyl and nitazine synthesis labs in Canada. The northern border has quickly become a hub for drug smuggling as criminals see Canadas weak border policies as an opportunity to infiltrate while the southern border becomes more secure.DEMOCRATS' BIZARRE AFFECTION FOR ILLEGAL ALIENSIn small American towns near the northern border, additional threats have arrived. Recently in a small border town in Montana, three members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua were arrested after being smuggled across the border. These criminals know that President Trump secured our southern border. Now theyre exploiting Canadian negligence and slipping in from the north.Communities that once felt far from the immigration crisis now find themselves on the front lines. As this threat worsens, Canada runs the risk of becoming a haven for organized crime and financial corruption. As global business leaders meet in Ottawa to discuss emerging economic challenges at the recent B7 Summit, its important to highlight the irony: this years B7 host country has become one of the most easily exploited financial gateways for international criminal organizations.HOW CANADAS NEW PRIME MINISTER PLANS TO TAKE DOWN AMERICA AND IMPOSE THE GREAT RESETJust last year, Canada-based TD Bank Group was fined after it allowed over $670 million to be laundered through its institutions. The activity was tied to drug trafficking, human smuggling, and even terrorist financing. These werent isolated failures they were systemic. And they were only exposed thanks to U.S. investigators, not Canadian authorities. Had the U.S. not intervened, it is likely these operations would still be running.Under President Trumps first administration, I saw firsthand how shutting down unlawful border crossings and removing criminal aliens saved lives. We made our country safer, stronger and more secure. Now, the threat is evolving. And so must we.CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINIONCanada should be standing shoulder to shoulder with us in defense of liberty, safety and common values. Unfortunately, left to its own political extremism, we will continue to see more of the same open-borders policies. We must not let Canadas weakness at our shared border undermine American strength.President Trump understands this. He knows that restoring Americas security requires vigilance on all of our borders. While the Biden administration turned a blind eye to Canadas unraveling, President Trump is making northern border security a top priority.Hes not waiting for another crisis to unfold, hes taking action now. Earlier this year, he announced new action to address the flow of illicit drugs across the northern border. The choice is clear: continue to strengthen our borders or risk the chaos Canada has embraced. We must support President Trump in securing the northern border, holding Canada accountable, and ensuring that criminal organizations cannot exploit our trust or threaten Americans. The safety of our communities and the sovereignty of our nation depend on it.CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM CHAD WOLF

'Bodega brothel' near schools in AOCs red-light district shut down without her help, local leaders say
QUEENS, N.Y. A well-known local brothel near two schools in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's red-light district has been shut down by the NYPD after months of advocacy by local leaders who say the progressive lawmaker did nothing to help them close it.Nicknamed the "bodega brothel" by locals, the establishment was operating on the second floor of a local bodega just off the Roosevelt Avenue strip in Queens, where prostitutes are known for openly soliciting sex on sidewalks, local Democratic district leader Hiram Monserrate told Fox News Digital.Video from inside the brothel reveals five cramped, makeshift rooms divided by wooden panels and shower curtains, each just large enough to hold a bed.AOC'S 'RED LIGHT' DISTRICT OVERRUN WITH PROSTITUTES AS LOCALS CALL OUT MIA 'SQUAD' MEMBERThe bodega is located across the street from two public schools, and students have been forced to walk past the sex workers outside the brothel on their way to and from class for months. An hour before Ocasio-Cortezs town hall earlier this month, Fox News Digital observed children walking by with their parents as three women stood outside. On Monday, the NYPD removed the beds from the brothel and padlocked its makeshift wooden door.Monserrate, who led the campaign to shutter the location, stood outside and praised the police for acting."The shutting down of the bodega brothel was long overdue, but it finally got done," said Monserrate, who also toured the brothel and described the sleazy state of the quarters."This place is clearly unsightly and unsanitary, and, quite frankly, disgusting," said Monserrate, a former Democratic state senator and council member who said he organized four separate rallies to close down the brothel.LEADERS IN AOC'S 'RED LIGHT' DISTRICT CALL ON KASH PATEL TO CRUSH 'WORSENING' GANG CRIME AND PROSTITUTIONMonserrate said he and local groups have called on Ocasio-Cortez and other elected officials to advocate for the shuttering of the brothels, but few have helped."AOC did not play a role at all," said Monserrate, who was chased out of a local square in October because he opposed protesters advocating for prostitution to be allowed in the neighborhood.Ramses Fras, a local Republican city council candidate, also said Ocasio-Cortez never attended a demonstration."It took the people to come together and rally against this bodega brothel," Frias said. Ocasio-Cortezs office told Fox News Digital it is not commenting on the closure.Monserrate said the area is plagued by prostitutes, many working at the behest of migrant gangs like the 18th Street Gangand Tren de Aragua. He has called on the FBI to intervene along Roosevelt Avenue, citing drug trafficking, illegal gun sales, identity theft and violent crimes. He said he has yet to receive a response, adding his sources have identified at least 20 brothels in the area.In October, New York City Mayor Eric Adams launched a sweeping police crackdown with more than 200 police and state troopers descending on the area. The NYPD told Fox News Digital last month that the clampdown, known as Operation Restore Roosevelt, had resulted in a 37% year-to-date drop in crime in the Roosevelt Avenue zone with more than 1,800 arrests and more than 15,000 summonses.Police did not say if any arrests were made in relation to the shuttering of the location Monday. The New York City Department of Buildings said the location was issued a partial vacate order in December, but Monserrate said it had been used for illicit purposes ever since then.Monserrate said the operation Monday was helpful, but many of the problems in the neighborhood still linger."While we are grateful to the NYPD, the NYC Buildings Department and the mayor's office, we also understand that there is still much to do until we stabilize this community and make it safer and better for all," Monserrate said. "We will continue to rally, call for more brothels to be closed and shine a light on the failed policies that our community has borne the brunt of."

Senate candidate in hotly contested race slapped with ethics investigation
The Kentucky Executive Branch Ethics Commission decided to move forward Wednesday with an investigation intoU.S. Senate candidate Daniel Cameron due to allegations dating back to July 2023 that the then-Kentucky attorney general and gubernatorial candidate solicited campaign donations from a company his office was investigating at the time."Whats happening to me is exactly what they did to President Trump: a shameless weaponization of government to take out political opponents," Daniel Cameron told Fox News Digital in an exclusive statement. "This is the first major case of Democrat lawfare in the 2026 cycle, and the timing is no coincidence. Im leading the GOP field by more than 20 points.
