WWW.FOXNEWS.COMCanadas antisemitism envoy resigns, citing exhaustion amid hate surgeAntisemitism in Canada surged following Hamass Oct. 7, 2023, massacre in Israel, culminating in a record 920 hate crimes targeting Jews last year. The spike in incidents prompted Deborah Lyons, the country's special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combating antisemitism, to step down earlier this month, citing exhaustion from "waking up every day to a fight."Lyons told The Canadian Jewish News last week that the "job was one that tore at you physically and emotionally. I mean, I faced a lot of hate out there myself... a lot of nasty words and in some cases actions," she said.ANTISEMITISM SPIKING AROUND THE WORLD, ADL TASK FORCE FINDS IN ITS 1ST-EVER GLOBAL REPORT"I would say that during this period, these last two years, Ive been really quite amazed and often become quite despondent and despairing about the fact that it was hard toget people to speak up, to speak with clarity, to speak with conviction about what we were seeing happening here on Canadian soil," she added.Irwin Cotler, a former Canadian Justice Minister and Lyons's predecessor as special envoy on antisemitism, told Fox News Digital that the "explosion" in Jew-hatred has been met not with broad condemnation, but with "silence, denial, acquiescence, support, and justification.""The government cant just virtue signal or be performativeit needs to act," Cotler said. "Thats something Deborah had to contend with. Shes a very loyal civil servant, and Im sure it was difficult for herdisheartening evento see the government not moving as quickly, effectively, or decisively as the mandate required."Although Jews make up less than one percent of Canadas population, 18.8% of all reported hate crimes in 2024 weremotivated by antisemitism.Of the 1,342 religiously motivated hate crimes reported last year, 920or 68.5%targeted the Jewish community."Since Special Envoy Lyons took office, weve seen a 124% increase in antisemitism," Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy at B'nai Brith Canada, told Fox News Digital."The situation has become increasingly untenable for the community. And although some positive steps were taken by the federal government, not enough has been done to stem the tideputting someone like the special envoy in a very tough position," he continued. "So its understandable that she felt fatigued and disheartened by the current state of hate in Canada."SIGN UP FOR ANTISEMITISM EXPOSED NEWSLETTERBoth Cotler and Robertson acknowledged key accomplishments by Lyons during her tenure, including the publication of a handbook on theIHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, produced by the envoys office. According to Cotler, the resource is now being used internationally by governments for training police, prosecutors, law enforcement officials, and public servants.Lyons was also an important voice in the international coalition of special envoys for combating antisemitism, giving Canada a presence with global resonance, Cotler said. He also highlighted her success in building out the Office of the Special Envoy with a strong staff and dedicated budgetan institutional foundation that did not exist before.Lyons also helped organize the National Forum on Combating Antisemitism, held in March 2024 and co-chaired by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada. The forum brought together leaders from all levels of government to address the growing public safety threat posed by Jew-hatred."We need a whole-of-government approach," Robertson said. "Thats why, immediately followingthe election of Mark Carney, we wrote to the prime minister and outlined key ministries that could be mandated to have an immediate impact on the crisis of antisemitism. This isnt something the special envoy can resolve aloneit requires coordinated government-wide effort."SKYROCKETING ANTISEMITISM IN CANADA SPARKS CONCERN FOR COUNTRY'S JEWS AHEAD OF ELECTIONNoah Shack, CEO of the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), told Fox News Digital that when law enforcement or public institutions have directly confronted antisemitic protests, harassment, or intimidation, they quickly collapsed."I think thats instructivethat when our public institutions take action to push back, it dissipates," he said. "We really need government, law enforcement, and broader society to recognize that we all have a duty to stand against this hate that is targeting the Jewish community right now, but also targeting our core values as Canadians. And if we fail to stand up, it will overtake our society and lead to a very dark future for all Canadians."Shack outlined three urgent actions he believes Canada can take to meaningfully address the issue. First, he emphasized the need to follow through on commitments to establish safety zones around places of worship, community centers, daycare centers, schools, and other sites where the Jewish community gathers.Second, he called for increased support for Jewish community security programs to protect these facilities from the violent threats they face."Weve had schools shot at, synagogues set on fire. This is a very concerning situation, and we need to ensure that the government is funding and integrating our community security programs at a level that exponentially improves safety," he said.Third, Shack emphasized the need to address the growing issue of radicalization seen on the streets and within public institutions."Canadas anti-terrorism laws should be aligned with those of countries like the UK, where the glorification of terrorism and membership in a terror organization are criminal offenses," he said.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPShack also cautioned against attempts to separate anti-Zionism from antisemitism, stating that the premise itself is flawed, and stressed that blaming Jews around the world for disagreements with Israeli government policies is equally hateful."I dont represent the government of Israel; I represent myself as a Jewish person living here in Canada. Just like my friends, family, and colleagues who live in the U.S. are Jewish Americans, we deserve to be treated with the same respect and rights as any other Canadian or American citizen, period," he said.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 18 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMMamdani dodges responsibility for threats to NYPD in first presser since deadly Manhattan shootingNew York City's Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, dodged responsibility for his past call to defund the police in the wake of a mass shooting in Manhattan that left four people dead, including a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer. The 33-year-old Democratic socialist returned to New York City on Wednesday from his wedding celebration in Uganda and immediately visited the home of the fallen NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, and then held a press conference with Islam's brother at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) headquarters in Manhattan.Mamdani was peppered with questions from reporters about his past policy stances, including his 2020 call to defund the police and his recent pledge to disband the NYPD Strategic Response Group (SRG), which responds to riots, civil disorder and mass shootings, such as the incident in Manhattan on Monday evening."My statements in 2020 were ones made amidst a frustration that many New Yorkers held at the murder of George Floyd," Mamdani responded when a reporter asked if he regretted any of his prior comments.MAMDANI RIPPED FOR PAST ANTI-POLICE RHETORIC AFTER POSTING TRIBUTE TO SLAIN NYPD OFFICERMamdani has since walked back his stance on defunding police, but his competitors, including former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has seized on such comments, telling CNN that Mamdani doesnt understand the "importance of NYPD."ZOHRAN MAMDANI DODGES QUESTIONS ON MASS SHOOTING AFTER RETURNING FROM AFRICA VACATION"I know that Governor Cuomo is far more comfortable in the past, whether it be his own or whether it be in attacking me for tweets made before I was even an assembly member," Mamdani said on Wednesday. "What I have said, time and time again, is the campaign that I am leading, the campaign that I am asking New Yorkers to consider is one that has been clear on its public safety approach:In an exclusive interview on Wednesday, Cuomo told Fox News Digital that his comments are "not publicizing the tragedy" and arguing that it's a "political discussion that we have to have in this campaign."Mamdani said he plans to address police department staffing shortages as mayor."What I am speaking of is a vision that will not only address public safety, but also keep officers in this very police department will ensure that they can actually respond to the crimes that are being committed in this city," Mamdani said. The socialist candidate criticized the former governor for "spending an entire day speaking almost exclusively about me, and barely about the New Yorkers who have been killed," calling it "indicative of the very politics New Yorkers want to leave in the past."And when a reporter asked Mamdani if he bears any responsibility for some of his past comments about the NYPD, including a post quipping, "nature is healing," in response to someone celebrating a cop crying in his car in 2020, Mamdani again dodged accountability, touting his newfound experience connecting with NYPD officers about their experiences."It is clear to me, as it is clear to so many New Yorkers, of the immense risk that, so many take upon when they do this work," Mamdani said, "What I will be as the mayor is someone who recognizes the work that these officers do, who looks to ensure work that brought them to this department and always focused on the outcome of public safety."Mamdani again criticized Cuomo for "trying to score" political points for criticizing his past comments."We spend far more of our time trying to score these kinds of points than asking ourselves, how can we ensure that New Yorkers are safe?" Mamdani said. The Democratic socialist has secured endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders while national Democratic leaders from New York, including House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer. On Wednesday, Mamdani said he echoes Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., who is also withholding her endorsement, for a national ban on assault rifles."I ask that in this moment, we come together as New Yorkers, and we remember the four of our neighbors that were killed. We honor their memories, and we live up to the way in which they lead their lives," Mamdani said.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 8 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр

WWW.FOXNEWS.COMCongressional stock trading ban passes through committee as Hawley denies reports of White House pushbackA long-awaited stock trading ban passed through the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee on Wednesday, with committee Democrats joining with the bill's sponsor, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., to send the bill to the floor of the Senate.Hawley originally introduced the "PELOSI Act" earlier this year, but what ultimately passed through the dizzying committee markup process on Wednesday was the Honest Act. Both pieces of legislation ban all members of Congress and their spouses from trading stocks while in office, in addition to closing various loopholes around direct trades. The critical difference between the two bills is that the Honest Act also bans the president and vice president from making trades while in office. That provision wouldn't go into effect until after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance leave office, however.Media reports Wednesday morning claimed that the White House had pushed back on that provision once they caught wind of it, but Hawley told Fox News Digital in an interview that he never heard any such messaging from the administration and "certainly not from Trump." Hawley was the sole Republican on the committee to vote in favor of the bill, despite a former co-sponsor of the PELOSI Act, Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, sitting on the committee as well.Trump reacted to the Hawley bill's progress during a Wednesday press conference. He reiterated his support for a congressional stock trading ban, but declined to endorse the legislation outright. He did not comment directly on the ban's inclusion of the top executive offices.MACE SOUNDS OFF ON STOCK TRADING IN CONGRESS, PELOSI REMAINS SILENT: SOMETHING DOESNT ADD UP"I like it conceptually," Trump said of the bill. "I don't know about it, but I like it conceptually and, you know, Nancy Pelosi became rich by having inside information. She made a fortune with her husband. And I think that's disgraceful. So in that sense, I'd like it, but I'd have to really see. I'd have, you know I study these things very carefully, and this just happened. So I'll take a look at it. But conceptually, I like it."A source familiar with Wednesday's negotiations told Fox News Digital that Hawley negotiated with Democrats while keeping Republicans in the dark, citing multiple pieces of legislation that crossed lawmakers' desks Monday morning that each had different versions of the ban. Hawley faced staunch criticism from his Republican colleagues during the markup process."I have no idea what we're voting for," Moreno said. "I have not read the mountains of paper that are sitting in front of me."HOUSE REPUBLICANS TAKE STEP CLOSER TO BANNING CONGRESSIONAL STOCK TRADINGSen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., one of the wealthiest members in Congress, remarked, "I don't know when in this country it became a negative to make money.""I don't mind anyone being rich. I mind people getting rich while theyre here and trading stocks," Hawley responded.Following the hearing, reporters asked Hawley about the criticism from his Republican colleagues more broadly."They don't want to ban stock trading. I just think that's a mistake," he responded.Current GOP versions of the stock trading ban moving through the House of Representatives do not include the president and vice president.Hawley's ban would prohibit lawmakers, the president, vice president and their spouses from holding, purchasing or selling stocks for the duration of their time in office. Officeholders would be allowed to invest in diversified mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, or U.S. Treasury bonds while in office.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPIf passed, current lawmakers would have 180 days to comply with the legislation. Likewise, newly elected lawmakers must achieve compliance within 180 days of entering office. The legislation would not apply to the executive offices until the end of Trump and Vance's term.0 Комментарии 0 Поделились 8 Просмотры 0 предпросмотр
