A judge in Hawaii has denied bail to a doctor who allegedly tried to kill his wife while the two were hiking on a Honolulu trail in March.The anesthesiologist, 46-year-old Dr. Gerhardt Konig, was charged with attempted second-degree murder after he allegedly tried to kill his wife on March 24 while they were hiking on Oahu's Pali Lookout trail. His bail was previously set at $5 million.Konig has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.Konig's attorneys argued in a motion that bail should be set at a "reasonable amount" since the defendant has no prior criminal history. A federal judge in New York has taken the extraordinary step of seizing control of the citys troubled Rikers Island jail complex, one of the nations largest and most famous jails, which houses around 7,000 inmates.Judge Laura Taylor Swain, in a 77-page ruling, ordered the notorious jail and the citys entire jail system -- be run by an independent officer reporting solely to the court, having found that conditions at the jail remained unconstitutionally dangerous, with persistent failures by NYC Department of Correction (DOC) leadership to implement court-mandated reforms."The unsafe and dangerous conditions in the jails have become normalized despite the fact that they are clearly abnormal and unacceptable," Swain wrote.NYC SHOULD BE HELD IN CONTEMPT OVER APPALLING RIKERS CONDITIONS, COURT-APPOINTED MONITOR SAYSThe order stems from a 2011 case, Nunez v. City of New York,when a group of incarcerated individuals filed a federal lawsuit alleging a pattern of excessive and unnecessary force by staff in New York City jails. In 2015, the city agreed to a settlement known as the Nunez Consent Judgment, which laid out hundreds of required reforms to reduce violence and improve oversight."Nine years have passed since the parties first agreed that the perilous conditions in the Rikers Island jails were unconstitutional; that the level of unconstitutional danger has not improved... is both alarming and unacceptable," Swain also wrote in the order.In November, she held the DOC and city in civil contempt for violating 18 provisions of court orders meant to reduce violence, abuse, and dysfunction in the jail system.Swain ordered the jail system be overseen by an independent official a Nunez Remediation Manager reporting solely to the court, with powers similar to a receiver but focused specifically on the citys contempt violations.The official will report directly to the court and will have full authority to change DOC policies related to the use of force, staffing, discipline, and security.NYC RIKERS ISLAND INMATE STARTS FIRE IN CELL, INJURING 20 ON SAME DAY DEM LAWMAKERS VISITNew York City Mayor Eric Adams had vigorously opposed a federal takeover but said on Tuesday that he would comply with the federal judges decision."If the federal judge made a determination that they want to do something else and they don't like what we're doing, it's a federal judgement," Adams said at a press briefing Tuesday on a different issue. "We're going to follow the rules."In 2017, former Mayor Bill de Blasio initiated a plan to close the prisonwithin 10 years aimed at reducing the city's jail population and replacing Rikers with four modern, borough-based jails located in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. De Blasio said the goal was to address systemic injustice, improve jail conditions and support decarceration and bail reform.But the plan appears unlikely to come to fruition anytime soon due to significant delays, with the firstof the replacement jails not scheduled to finish before 2029, according to the New York Post.The de Blasio plan was approved by the City Council and prohibited capital investments in the facility, which Adams said tied his hands in relation to improving conditions, although he said that the problems there are decades old and that conditions improved under his leadership with fewer stabbings, assaults and absenteeism."I'm hoping [the judge] looked at the funding plan we had... we should be able to spend capital dollars to improve the facility."Swain acknowledged that these limitations were part of the context but did not accept them as valid excuses. The ugly scenes saw more than 200 people arrested as students protested Israels war in Gaza in response to the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas that left more than 1,200 people dead.Critics of the protesters said they were fueled by hatred of Israel, while defenders said they were trying to force political change and stop Israels attacks on Gaza aimed at crushing Hamas and rescuing the hostages.Another student, PJ, said he hopes Wednesday's disturbance can be used as an inflection point and said he hopes it is used as a time to come together to find some common ground. He feels the disruptions should be dealt with internally by the university."I think that it's a lot of sadness, a lot of frustration, a lot of confusion, as well," he said. "I think this is a scary time, I also think it's a very hopeful time."He said students are trying to balance the best way to stand up for their beliefs and values with academic tasks at hand.International students who did speak to Fox News Digital did not want to be on video in fear of any repercussions.As of the fall, about 13,750 (38%) of Columbias student population are international students with more than 6,450 hailing from China, according to the university. That is followed by 1,240 Indians and nearly 580 Canadians. These students hail from over 145 countries.One Italian student said the tactics protesters used were wrong. "Ive learned that its smart not to comment.""Im staying out of it, Im an international student," a smiling female international student from Ethiopia said as she whizzed by.Daniel David, a freshman from Israel who is studying computer science, said the protesters are misguided since they do not live in the Middle East and do not have first-hand experience of the situation in the Middle East."There are no consequences for actions. How do they know whats going on over there?" David asked.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPHe said he thought twice about coming to study at Columbia given last years encampments but said if he did not, then it would have been a win for the demonstrators.Antonio Da Porto, an Italian student who is studying math, added that he does not want a repeat of last year's disruptions when student classes, studies and graduations were interrupted. He said the protesters should demonstrate in public spaces."These people act in a way that they want to really put the students in a difficult situation. I think theres a silent majority of people that are not happy about anything that's happening right now and that's been happening in the last year," Da Porto said."You can say what you think, but you're an international student, so you're here to build your career, and you should not bring any problems to the nation. Theres not really a systematic antisemitism problem. It's like a small group of students that do a lot of noise. But outside this small group of students, Jewish students can feel relatively safe on the campus."

Stephen A. Smith had a question for "Democrats everywhere" on Tuesday during the latest episode of his podcast as he touched on the possibility of Rep.
