Amateur baseball player makes ingenious play to avoid potential double play
You never know what you might see on a baseball field.Duluth Huskies third baseman Ethan Surowiec fielded a groundball, as a baserunner, during the teams 5-4 win over the La Crosse Loggers on Tuesday at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minnesota.The bases were loaded in the bottom of the inning with one out, and the Huskies were up to bat. Surowiec was the runner on second base when a ground ball was hit to Loggers shortstop Mikey Ryan III.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMAfter the ball was hit, Surowiec took a couple of steps to his right and fielded the ball himself, like a shortstop, instead of letting it through to the actual shortstop, Ryan, to avoid a potential double-play."Oh my goodness, I have never seen that on a baseball field," the announcer said."Ethan Surowiec picked up the baseball (and) purposefully gave himself up."The umpires deemed the play a "fielders choice 6," which allowed for the bases to remain loaded. Rule 6.01(a)(6) states that both Surowiec and the batter should have been ruled out."If, in the judgment of the umpire, a baserunner willfullyand deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielderin the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intentto break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpireshall call the runner out for interference and also call outthe batter-runner because of the action of his teammate.In no event may bases be run or runs scored because ofsuch action by a runner," the rule states, accordiong to the Baseball Rules Academy.If the umpires had enforced the rule according to what the Baseball Rules Academy stated, both Surowiec and the batter would have been called out to end the inning.Surowiecs seemingly ingenious play would have resulted in the same outcome he was trying to prevent: an inning-ending double play. Three deceased campers identified as death toll rises after devastating Texas flood
Three young girls were found dead after a devastating flood swept through Camp Mystic, an all-girls private Christian camp in Hunt, Texas.Anne Hunt confirmed to Fox News Digital that her daughter, Janie, was one of the campers killed in the flood. Additionally, A Voice for the Voiceless, a nonprofit that advocates for "the missing, voiceless and crime victims," identified Renee Smajstrla as the other deceased camper.A third camper has been confirmed to be deceased, however her family has asked that her name not be released.Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said on Friday night that between 23 and 25 campers were missing. According to the Kerr County Sheriff's Office, Ingram Elementary School in Ingram, Texas, and The Arcadia Live Theater in Kerrville, Texas, are being used as reunification centers.Camp Mystic, which had approximately 750 attendees, reportedly told parents that if they had not been contacted directly it meant that their child was accounted for.Ellen Toranzo told Fox News Digital that her daughter, Greta Toranzo, is one of the campers who went missing during the flood. Younger campers, who can begin attending at age 8, are housed along the riverbanks and were the first to flood, according to the Associated Press.The National Guard was deployed in Texas to respond after heavy rain on Friday morning caused the Guadalupe River to rise nearly 30 feet in 45 minutes. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem later said that members of the U.S. Coast Guard were deployed to assist in evacuations.Helicopters and military vehicles were used for evacuations. As of Friday night, 237 people had been evacuated, including 167 by helicopter.Texas deployed more than 1,000 state responders and over 800 vehicles and equipment assets, according to Gov. Greg Abbott's office. The governor also declared an emergency for 15 counties, and his office said that more could be added to the list."This is a time when we, as a state, need God more than ever," Abbott said in a statement. David Charvet left Hollywood nearly two decades ago and has no interest in going back.The actor, who starred in "Baywatch" and "Melrose Place," has turned to construction. Julian McMahon, the actor known for his roles in "Fantastic Four," "Nip/Tuck" and "Charmed," has died. According to the outlet, he played the lead in the 1992 Australian-American movie "Wet and Wild Summer" before Hollywood came calling.The outlet reported that, after appearing in "Another World" in 1992, he became a series regular in the crime drama "Profiler." From 2000 to 2005, he starred as Cole Turner, a love interest to Alyssa Milanos character Phoebe, in the TV series "Charmed." Trump defends use of shylock term at rally amid antisemitism claims
President Donald Trump has defended his use of the term "shylock" at a rally this week, saying he was unaware it is considered antisemitic by some people.Trump used the term in his speech in Iowa on Thursday, shortly after his signature One Big Beautiful Bill Act was passed by Congress earlier in the day.Shylock is the name of the villainous Jewish moneylender in Shakespeares "The Merchant of Venice," who demands a pound of flesh from a debtor.TRUMP ADMIN CRACKS DOWN ON ANTISEMITISM AS DOJ OFFICIAL EXPOSES 'VIOLENT RHETORIC' OF RADICAL PROTESTERSOver time, the name came to be used more broadly to refer to a loan shark or greedy moneylender. Today, it can be considered an antisemitic slur, particularly when used in reference to Jewish people."No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing some from, in some cases, a fine banker and in some cases, shylocks and bad people," Trump said, while referring to the bills elimination of estate taxes and borrowing burdens.The term did not provoke any reaction from the crowd, but his remark quickly blew up online, and he later defended using it when a reporter said it is widely considered an antiemetic phrase."No Ive never heard it that way," Trump responded. "To me, a shylock is somebody thats a moneylender at high rates. Ive never heard it that way. You view it differently than me. NY Times addresses backlash over report on NYC mayoral candidate Mamdani's college application
The New York Times seems to be in damage control after the paper's story about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani identifying as Asian and African American on his college application upset some of its readers, leading to an editor from the outlet attempting to clear up the controversy on social media on Friday.The article claimed that Mamdani, when asked his race on his 2009 college application to Columbia University, checked the boxes for "Asian" but also "Black or African American," in their article published on Thursday.The Times' assistant managing editor for Standards and Trust, Patrick Healy, put out a lengthy statement on X the following day after receiving "reader feedback" on the article.RESURFACED VIDEO SHOWS NYC MAYORAL HOPEFUL SAYING HE WANTS TO REPLACE PRIVATE HOMES WITH COMMUNAL LIVING"Our reporters obtained information about Mr. Mamdanis Columbia college application and went to the Mamdani campaign with it. When we hear anything of news value, we try to confirm it through direct sources. Mr. Mamdani confirmed this information in an interview with The Times," he wrote.Healy explained that the New York City mayoral candidate felt limited by the options listed in the application's racial identity boxes and since he was born in Uganda, decided to write in the country on his application.Mamdani's application was made available to The Times after a cyberattack on Columbia University in late June led to some of the school's sensitive information being exposed to the hackers.Healy stated that although the outlet received the information after it was stolen in a cyberattack, "The Times does not solely rely on nor make a decision to publish information from such a source," and verified the application with Mamdani himself before publishing the story.Regarding the feedback, he added, "We believe Mr. Mamdanis thinking and decision-making, laid out in his words, was newsworthy and in line with our mission to help readers better know and understand top candidates for major offices."Liberal critics, such as Keith Olbermann, lashed out at the Times on X. He stated, "Your absolute abrogation of the NYT standards would in a better era there have led the full range of you in management to resign. Utter failure. Then again, if you don't realize NYT is perceived as actively campaigning against Mamdani, you're all lost anyway."Another aspect of the article that some readers took issue with was The Times' source, who sent them Mamdani's 2009 college application.NEW YORK TIMES COLUMNIST ADMITS THAT TRUMP IS A 'NORMIE REPUBLICAN'An opinion columnist for the outlet took to the social media platform Bluesky to slam his own publication for the story.Jamelle Bouie, a columnist for The Times, slung personal insults at the reporters on social media as well.Responding to a Bluesky post slamming one of the Times reporters, Benjamin Ryan, the columnist had this to say: "Everything I have seen about him screams a guy with little to no actual brain activity."Shortly after pubically slamming The Times' story and the reporters who worked on it, Bouie deleted the posts and issued a short statement on his Bluesky account."I deleted several posts about a Times story because they violated Times social media standards," he said.The New York Times did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment on this matter. Fox News Digital also reached out to Bouie for comment.
