Second-oldest university in nation reports 'really neat' archaeology find on its grounds
The first structure at the second-oldest university in the United States was recently rediscovered by archaeologists and it's not necessarily something to expect at a school.William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, was originally chartered in 1693. The idyllic Southern university houses the oldest university building in the United States, the Wren Building. But the Wren Building is not what was recently discovered rather, a 17th-century brick kiln was found hidden in dirt not far from the colonial-era hall.HISTORIC MARYLAND CHURCH OPENS DOORS TO VISITORS 320 YEARS AFTER CLOSING DOWNElizabeth Monroe, archaeological research manager and co-director of the William & Mary Center for Archaeological Research (WMCAR), told Fox News Digital in an interview that the kiln was first found by archaeologists in the 1930s, who recorded it and then covered it back up with dirt. (See the video at the top of this article.)It wasn't until school employees began restorative efforts trying to waterproof the Wren Building's foundation, for example that the kiln was rediscovered earlier this year. Pictures show excavators painstakingly digging around the brick kiln, which has miraculously survived the centuries."The archaeology that was done in [the 1930s] is not like the archaeology we do today," Monroe said."They were being careful for their time, but not as careful as we would have maybe liked them to be. But still, they revealed many architectural features."LONG-LOST CAPITAL OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATION MAY HAVE FINALLY BEEN UNCOVERED, ARCHAEOLOGISTS SAY: 'UNIQUE FIND'The brick kiln was used to make the clay bricks that used to construct the Wren Building, according to 1993 archaeological report on the structure."These kilns represent the first building of any kind on the site," the report read. "The earth from the basement probably supplied the material for the bricks."The document added, "The kilns were left in situ upon the completion of the restoration [and] they were re-covered with earth."Monroe described it as "probably the oldest building that was on this site.""They would have built it prior to building the Wren," she said. "They would've had to make a lot of bricks to build this building."For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle"It's got a three-foot-thick foundation, which is how it survived all this time. And several people have said, 'Oh, it's so close to the [Wren] Building.' Well, the building wasn't there yet. There was a hole in the ground where the cellar is, and likely they pulled clay out of that hole to make the bricks that now serve as the structure."Charles Fulcher, director of Wren operations and events at William & Mary, told Fox News Digital that the Wren Building "has been doing largely the same thing for about 325 years."He added, "It was largely usable by 1699, 1700, and students still have classes in this building every single day. We use the Wren [during the] course of daily life, with students coming in and out of classes, just as Thomas Jefferson had classes in this building in the early 1760s."ARCHAEOLOGISTS UNCOVER CENTURIES-OLD SHIPWRECK BENEATH HISTORIC CITY: 'UNIQUE SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE'He also said, "It is a place where the university holds traditions and ceremonies, events of significance for the whole student body. And it's just really neat to have a moment like this brick kiln discovery to make that age come to life."Despite the novelty of rediscovering the university's oldest-ever structure, the group of historians said that archaeological discoveries are quite commonplace in Williamsburg."Since 1693, buildings have come and gone," Monroe said. "There have been tennis courts come and go. There have been students and gardens and outbuildings and just a wide variety of things changing paths."EXCAVATORS DISCOVER PREHISTORIC VILLAGE BENEATH FUTURE GOLF COURSE: 'REMARKABLE JOURNEY'"Pretty much, you stick a shovel in the ground anywhere on campus, and you're going to come up with something that helps tell the story of the university."WMCAR project archaeologist Tom Higgins echoed the sentiment, telling Fox News Digital that he's encountered many centuries-old artifacts."The basement of the Great Hall [in the Wren Building] had a kitchen that was intensively used for several generations We ended up with a lot of refuse, broken plates and bottles and things like that," he said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER"Lots of the 18th-century and 19th-century refuse from the day-to-day life at the college turns up in that kind of work."Fulcher reported that the rediscovery has proven meaningful to the university community at large, especially the group of students that he supervises to give tours of the Wren building. For more Lifestyle articles, visitfoxnews.com/lifestyle"When the kiln was uncovered and we could see black marks in the soil showing where the fires had been kindled and bricks had been burned I sent out word to all of them," he said."Many of them came by in the middle of the school day just to make sure that they could see it."For now, archaeologists have covered the kiln back up in order to make room for future scaffolding of the Wren Building, and they plan to encounter the kiln again in the future."At some point in the future, we'll be reopening [the ground] around the foundation to actually do the waterproofing that's necessary and replace some drainage pipes," Monroe said."But the goal is to identify where these kinds of sensitive archaeological features are and record that so that future generations as additional improvements need to be made."Fox News Digital's Kyle Schmidbauer contributed to this report.

Why red wine is more likely to give you a headache
Ever wonder why that pounding headache seems worse after consuming red wine as opposed to drinking white or sparkling?Researchers have been investigating this mystery and identified potential head-pounding provocateurs. One theory suggests that a flavanol called quercetin, found in higher concentrations in red wines compared to white, may be responsible.IS RED WINE GOOD FOR YOUR HEART? CONSIDER THIS WISDOM FROM A CARDIAC SURGEON"In two studies, the total flavanol content in white wines [is] almost 10-fold lower than [in] red wines," researchers from the University of California, Davis, said in their 2023 study published in the journal Scientific Reports.Quercetin is a healthy antioxidant found in grapes, but it can interfere with alcohol metabolism. This can lead to an accumulation of a toxin called acetaldehyde, which results in facial flushing, nausea and headaches, Apramita Devi, the lead author of the study, said in a news release. The study also noted that certain individuals, including about 40% of those with East Asian origin, may have an enzyme variant that hampers the elimination of acetaldehyde, making them more at risk for red wine headaches."We postulate that when susceptible people consume wine with even modest amounts of quercetin, they develop headaches, particularly if they have a preexisting migraine or another primary headache condition," Morris Levin, a co-author of the study and director of the Headache Center at the University of California, San Francisco, said in the study's release.Grapes produce quercetin in response to sunlight. This means flavanol levels can vary in red wine depending on how grapes are grown, according to the study.PAIRING CHOCOLATE WITH TEA COULD HAVE SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS, EXPERTS SAY"If you grow grapes with the clusters exposed, such as they do in the Napa Valley for their cabernets, you get much higher levels of quercetin," Andrew Waterhouse, one of the UC Davis researchers involved in the study, said in the news release. "In some cases, it can be four to five times higher."The way wine is made, including time length of skin contact, aging methods and fining processes, also affect quercetin levels, according to the study.Further research is needed in human clinical trials to explore this potential link, the study said.In addition to quercetin and overindulgence of alcoholic beverages, experts noted other possible culprits for red wine headaches."Alcohol, in general, is a diuretic. This can lead to dehydration especially if you consume too much and when you are dehydrated, you have headaches," Caroline Susie, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Texas and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, told Fox News Digital."The high alcohol content in red wine can exacerbate this."Histamines can also play a role."Red wine contains a higher level of histamines than white wine," Susie said. "People with histamine intolerance can get headaches when consuming red wine."AMERICANS' HIGH SUGAR CONSUMPTION PROMPTS WARNINGThe dietitian said grape skins also contain tannins, which have antioxidant properties and help give red wine a distinct flavor, but they may also be linked to headaches."There are many factors, genetic and otherwise, that contribute to our symptoms during and after alcohol ingestion," according to Dr. Frances Lee, who specializes in alcohol-related liver disease at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.Lee told Fox News Digital that "while headaches are unpleasant, they may curb overall alcohol intake, which is better for our health and well-being."CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERThere are some alternatives for wine drinkers who want to avoid a wine-induced headache without abstaining."White wine has lower histamine and tannin content," Susie said. "Champagne has lower alcohol content and less tannins and histamine."For more Lifestyle articles, visitfoxnews.com/lifestyleSusie suggested opting "for a lighter-bodied wine such as a Pinot noir instead of a big cabernet" and limiting intake. She said hydrating before, during and after consumption is important.Levin hopes his future research willprovide red wine drinkers with safer choices and possibly help "winemakers reduce headache-inducing properties,"according to a UC San Francisco news release.Fox News Digital reached out to the study authors for further comment.

Russia's Putin hosts China's Xi at massive Moscow military parade on Red Square
Chinese President Xi Jinping was photographed standing next toVladimir Putin on Friday as thousands of Russian troops and military vehicles rumbled through Moscows Red Square during the countrys annual Victory Day parade. The event, marking Russias 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, featured over 11,500 troops and more than 180 military vehicles, including tanks, armored infantry vehicles and artillery used on the battlefield in Ukraine."We are proud of their courage and determination, their spiritual force that always has brought us victory," Putin said about the Russian troops fighting in the war.Russian flag carrier Aeroflot canceled more than 100 flights to and from Moscow and delayed over 140 others on Wednesday as the military were repelling repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on the capital.CHINAS XI STANDS WITH PUTIN AGAINST INTERNATIONAL BULLYING AMID TRUMP TRADE WARUkrainian authorities also reported scores of Russian strikes on Friday that killed at least two people in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and damaged buildings. The strikes in Ukraine came despite Putin declaring a three-day ceasefire with Ukraine last month ahead of the Victory Day celebrations."All military actions are suspended for this period," the Kremlin said in a statement at the time, noting that the ceasefire would run through the end of Saturday, May 10. "Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example."Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he spoke with President Donald Trump on Thursday, who "confirmed that he wants this war to end, is ready to help, and supports the need for a ceasefire."Zelenskyy said he informed Trump that "Ukraine is ready for a 30-day ceasefire, starting even today. We are waiting for Russia to support this proposal. I also reaffirmed that Ukraine is ready to engage in talks in any format. But for that, Russia must demonstrate the seriousness of its intentions to end the war, starting with a full unconditional ceasefire."BIDEN BLASTS TRUMP AS FOOLISH APPEASER OF RUSSIA, SAYS FIRST 100 DAYS WERE NO TRIUMPHPrior to the parade, Putin and Xi held two rounds of talks and an informal chat about the conflict, the BBC reported, citing Chinese media. Among the other world leaders to attend Friday were Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Brazil President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Slovakia Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was the only European Union leader to head to Moscow, according to the BBC.The outlet also reported that Chinese troops and contingents of soldiers from North Korea, Vietnam and Mongolia marched through Red Square.Afterward, Putin shook hands with Russian military officers who led the troops on Red Square and spoke to a group of senior North Korean officers who watched the parade, hugging one of them.Last month, Putin thanked North Korea for fighting alongside Russian troops against Ukrainian forces and hailed their sacrifices as Pyongyang confirmed its deployment for the first time.Fox News Stephen Sorace and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Pope Leo XIV, Villanova grad, introduces himself adorned in symbolism, proverbial religious devotion
As silence and stillness calmed the eager world, Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, overlooking a sea of tens of thousands of teary-eyed viewers in St. Peters Square, introduced Catholics and non-faithful to the newest pontiff.American Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected to take the papal seat and succeed the deceased Pope Francis on May 8, 2025, after four rounds of conclave voting by 133 members of the College of Cardinals. As the world explores both the tender and commanding qualities that make Pope Leo XIV papabile and worthy of the Vicar of Christ title, one place, a small place of around 10,000 people, is beaming with pride for the newly elected Chicago-native.DIO BENEDICA IL PAPA, OTHER WELL WISHES FOR THE NEW PONTIFF, POPE LEO XIV, IN ITALIAN"It's a super-happy day for all Catholics to have a new pope," Patrick Brennan, chair of Catholic Legal Studies at Villanova University, told Fox News Digital."I was sitting in the studio when I discovered, as everyone else did, that it was a Villanova graduate who was now the pope."Pope Leo XIV is a graduate of the Class of 1977.Villanova University, a private Catholic university 12 miles outside of Philadelphia, enrolls just 6,700 undergraduate students and 3,100 graduate and law students, according to its website."Its a hometown boy not just makes good but breaks all the molds," Brennan said. "We have an American pope."FIRST AMERICAN ELECTED PONTIFF, GET TO KNOW POPE LEO XIVPope Leo XIV is the first pope to ever be elected from the United States.Despite skepticism that the Sacred College would vote for an American pope, Brennan says he was "thrilled" to hear the announcement of Prevost."The people that I know who know him think that he's a wonderful priest," Brennan told Fox News Digital. "He's been a wonderful member of the Augustinian order, and we know that Pope Francis has entrusted him with great responsibilities. Its a happy day."Prevost was created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023.The Augustinian religious order, formerly known as the Order of Saint Augustine and deeply rooted in the beliefs and teachings of influential theologian Saint Augustine, bishop of Hippo, was established in the 13th century.WORLD LEADERS CONGRATULATE POPE LEO XIV, FIRST AMERICAN PONTIFF"The Augustinians are not as well-known in the United States as the Jesuits are an important part of the life of the American church," Brennan said.Pope Francis, a Jesuit and the first to serve as a pontificate, made history as the first member of a religious order in centuries.Pope Leo XIV has followed suit historically."Though they don't have the presence that the Jesuits do, they do an amazing job," Brennan said of the Augustinians. "This will give a huge vote of confidence for them about the work they're doing in the Church."In 1842, the Augustinians founded Villanova University in downtown Philadelphia until later relocating to suburban Philly, where the college is surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful architecture.POPE LEO XIV IS ESCORTED OUT OF SISTINE CHAPEL AFTER BECOMING 267TH POPE"When [Pope Leo XIV] would have been in Villanova in the 1970s, it was a beautiful suburban campus of a small Catholic liberal arts college with high standards and a great love of the Catholic tradition and a whole lot of Villanova spirit," Brennan said. "When I came to Villanova, I was stunned, and I still am by the incredible enthusiasm Villanova students and alumni have for their experience and for the Villanova community."Pope Leo XIV celebrated his electoral triumph by praying the prayer of the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the world."I think that that was one of the ways he symbolized his traditional piety," Brennan said.WHO IS POPE LEO XIV?"His desire to signal to the world that he's a Catholic who prays the way that Catholics traditionally do. Pope Francis was known for his great devotion to the blessed Virgin Mary, which is part of the reason he made the unusual decision to be buried in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore."Pope Francis, shortly after becoming the Bishop of Rome in 2013, revealed his burial plans."Choosing to pray the Hail Mary was a signal of continuity and piety," Brennan said of Pope Leo XIV.Finally, for the namesake, Brennan says he envisions the selection was made as a symbolic gesture."He jumped over a whole century, back to the name of a pope who died in 1903 who left the Church a huge legacy of deep understanding of the place of a human person and the Catholic Church in the modern world," Brennan said."I think Pope Leo XIV, by choosing that name, is attaching himself to a legacy that he can, and I believe intends to, open for a world that's changed a great deal and needs new light and understanding of the kind he probably associates and finds in the world of Pope Leo XIII," Brennan said.

USA Fencing transgender controversy escalates at DOGE hearing with social media regrets, calls for resignation
Just six weeks after women's fencer Stephanie Turner was disqualified and escorted out of a tournament for kneeling in protest of a trans opponent, she watched the man in charge of her punishment get grilled for it in a federal hearing.USA Fencing Chair Damien Lehfeldt was grilled by Republican lawmakers at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Subcommittee's "Unfair Play: Keeping Men Out of Womens Sports" hearing on Wednesday. After the hearing, Turner told Fox News Digital that she would devote herself and her platform to pushing for resignations among key leadership figures in USA Fencing."I'm going to be pushing for people to resign, to be honest. I'd like to see some people resign for the comments that they've made, especially publicly, ones that are harassing and meant to humiliate concerned women, mothers and daughters," Turner said.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMUSA Fencing has provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing Turner's calls for leadership change."We respect Ms. Turners right to share her views. The volunteer members of USA Fencings Board, elected by our membership, remain focused on serving athletes and meeting our obligations under the Ted Stevens Act and other governing-body rules. No leadership changes are under consideration," the statement read.Lehfeldt, who was subpoenaed and did not come voluntarily, made things harder on himself ahead of the hearing with a series of Instagram stories that were later blown up and used against him on the committee floor. In one post, which went viral before the hearing, he responded to a question that asked if he was "okay" with putting female fencers at a disadvantage with a simple, brash answer: "yeah."Then, during the hearing, Lehfeld admitted multiple times he regretted answering that way and admitted the question required a "more-nuanced" response."He was under oath, but I was surprised that he admitted having written a fake response that he posted on his Instagram," Turner said. "So the simple admission that he knows what he's doing, and the intimidation tactics that he's been employing online, and he knows that they're wrong, and he hadn't redacted them until that point, it took a hearing, a subpoenaed hearing for him to do that, it was surprising."USA Fencing provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing its chair's social media posts on Wednesday."Mr. Lehfeldts pre-hearing social posts were made in a personal capacity. Before and during the hearing, he clarified that the commentsdo notreflect USA Fencing policy and expressed regret for any confusion they caused," the statement read.WHO IS STEPHANIE TURNER? WOMEN'S FENCER WHO KNELT TO PROTEST TRANS OPPONENT AND IGNITED GLOBAL AWARENESSHowever, that was just the start of things for Lehfeldt. Throughout the afternoon, he faced his fair share of insults and personal comments from Republican committee members.Rep. Tim Burhcett, R-Tenn, asked Lehfeldt whether he would let his daughter fence against "a man." Lehfeldt suggested he would allow it while boasting about his organization's safety precautions."As long as the competitor has met all the hormonal requirements and complies with the policy, I would be okay with it," Lehfeldt said.Later in the hearing, Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., suggested that Lehfeldt was "not" a man for his organization's gender eligibility policy."Real men protect women, you're not one," Mace said.Mace even asked Lehfeldt to simply apologize to Turner for punishing the fencer, to which the chair declined and pointed out that Turner received a black card for her refusal. However, Turner was not looking for an apology."I want more than an apology. I want a change in policy and I want people to start speaking the truth again. And an apology is just empty words without actions to me, so I don't know how far it would go for me," Turner said. The organization first enacted its current trans-inclusion policy in 2023. It allows transgender athletes to compete in the women's category at both the junior and senior level after completing onecalendar year of testosterone-suppression treatment. Proof ofcompliant hormone therapy must be provided prior to competition, but the organization has taken even further steps to prioritize its trans competitors.USA Fencing announced in late April that it is preparing to change its gender-eligibility policy in the aftermath of the controversy with Turner."In the event that USA Fencing is forced to change its current stance in accordance with oversight bodies or federal legislation, the new policy states athletes competing in USA Fencing-sanctioned tournaments must compete according to their biological sex," the announcement read. The proposed updated policy ensures that the women's category "will be open exclusively to athletes of the female sex." The men's category "will be open to all other athletes who are otherwise eligible for competition."Education Secretary Linda McMahon previously announced that the newly formed Title IX investigations team will be probing the incident involving Turner and trans competitor Redmond Sullivan.Meanwhile, Turner is on a hiatus from fencing in the aftermath of the controversy."I don't see how I can spend the money to go to a tournament and have their be multiple officials that I know who are deeply against me," Turner said. "That's just not a fight that I want to be in the middle of right now, I'd rather take this fight elsewhere."Follow Fox News Digitals sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
