The vessels captain and one crew member were aboard.""Basically, the boat was surfing like a giant surfboard," Ramon Brockington, who had been filming body surfers at the time of the incident, said, according to The Associated Press. Rachel Morin's mother explains painstaking process of writing statement to read at killer's sentencing
For nearly two years, the family of Rachel Morin has carried the weight of unimaginable grief after the Maryland mother of five's brutal murder at the hands of an illegal immigrant. On Monday, her loved ones, including her mother, Patty Morin, will speak in court, seeking justice, closure and dignity while remembering the life she lived."I'm going to ask that the judge would honor Rachel's life and preserve her dignity by giving her the justice that she deserves," Patty Morin told "Fox & Friends" ahead of the sentencing. She will soon undergo a monumental task, capturing her daughter's life in a series of words that encompass her worth and the pain left behind in her absence.WATCH: BRYAN KOHBERGER SHREDDED BY VICTIMS' FAMILIES DURING EMOTIONAL SENTENCING HEARINGMorin told Lawrence Jones she had thought about what to say since the crime happened two years ago, writing notes and compiling nine drafts of her impact statement, none of which seemed adequate."When you get to the point where you actually sit down and write the statement, you don't think it's good enough how can I put the value of her life, reduce it to ink and paper? And then how do I feel about this person and what he's done to take that life away? And then I think about my grandchildren and her siblings and the pain that they've suffered. And how that, today, they're going to be expressing their pain as well in statements" she said.MOTHER OF MURDERED JOGGER SLAMS REP. CROCKETT FOR DISMISSING MIGRANT CRIME VICTIMS"It's just going to be a really hard day. No way around it."Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, the illegal immigrant convicted of raping and murdering Morin in August 2023, will be sentenced on all counts, including first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree rape, third-degree sex offense and third-degree kidnapping.Morin said she doesn't know if she would want to hear from her daughter's killer because she isn't sure she would believe what he said if he spoke.Morin described her daughter as someone full of "energy" outgoing, loving and happy."It's just so odd to have someone that had so much life and energy and light, and now we're at this end where it's this darkness and death and just the void of that life in our lives" she said.

WhatsApp bans 6.8M scam accounts, launches safety tool
Scammers are working harder than ever to trick people online, but WhatsApp is hitting back in a big way. In the first half of 2025, WhatsApp removed more than 6.8 million accounts tied to global scam networks, many of them run by criminal groups and even forced labor camps in Southeast Asia.At the same time, the app is rolling out new tools to make it easier to spot scams and stay safe while messaging. These updates come as fraudsters increasingly use private messaging apps, dating platforms, social media and even AI tools like ChatGPT to run their schemes. Let's break down what's new, how scams are evolving and what you can do right now to protect yourself.Sign up for my FREE CyberGuy ReportGet my best tech tips, urgent security alerts, and exclusive deals delivered straight to your inbox. Plus, youll get instant access to my Ultimate Scam Survival Guide - free when you join myCYBERGUY.COM/NEWSLETTEROnline scams no longer live on just one platform. Criminal operations often start with a text or dating app, move to WhatsApp, and finish on Telegram or a crypto exchange. In just one scheme, scammers may run a victim through five different apps to make the fraud harder to detect.MULTIPLE US CANCER CENTERS HIT IN COORDINATED PHISHING BREACHIn a recent takedown, WhatsApp and Meta partnered with OpenAI to shut down a scam operation linked to Cambodia. Fraudsters used ChatGPT to generate messages offering fake "like-for-pay" gigs. Victims were told to message on WhatsApp, then moved to Telegram and asked to like TikTok videos. Once trust was built, scammers asked for crypto deposits to unlock fake earnings. These scams feed on financial stress and urgency. If someone promises fast cash, easy returns or pressures you to act quickly, stop and think. To stop scams before they spread, WhatsApp is introducing new features to give you more control. If someone who's not in your contacts adds you to a group, you'll now see a safety screen with details about the group and privacy tips. You can leave the group instantly, without reading a single message. Notifications stay silent unless you confirm you want to stay.Scammers often reach out on social media or dating sites, then ask to switch to WhatsApp. To help you spot these red flags, WhatsApp is testing alerts that show when you message someone not in your contacts. These alerts provide added context so you can decide whether to engage.WhatsApp has teamed up with internet safety expert Rachel Tobac to share this three-step strategy to stop scams before they succeed:Slow down. If you don't recognize the number or the message feels off, wait before replying.Does it seem realistic? Are they asking for money, PINs or gift cards? Are they offering big payouts for little work? These are classic scam signs. If someone claims to be a friend or relative, contact them through another method you already use, like calling their regular phone number.Even with WhatsApp removing 6.8 million scam-linked accounts, the responsibility to stay safe doesn't end there. Scammers will always find new angles and often prey on the same people across multiple platforms. That's why it's smart to take extra steps beyond what WhatsApp offers. Here are five ways to add layers of protection:Scammers often try to trick you into clicking on links or downloading files that can compromise your device. A strong antivirus program can block these threats before they do harm. It can also alert you to phishing attempts disguised as WhatsApp messages. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe.Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices atCyberGuy.com/LockUpYourTechWHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?Limit who can add you to group chats or see your personal information. Go to your WhatsApp privacy settings and change "Groups" to "My Contacts" or "My Contacts Except..." to avoid being pulled into suspicious chats. Here's how to limit who can add you to WhatsApp group chats:Pro tip: While you're in the Privacy menu, review other settings likeProfile Photo,About, andLast Seen & Online. Set these toMy Contacts orNobody for even more control over who can see your personal info.Scammers often scrape the internet for names, numbers, emails and social media accounts to make their messages seem more convincing. A personal data removal service can help scrub your details from data broker sites, making it harder for scammers to target you. While no service can guarantee the complete removal of your data from the internet, a data removal service is really a smart choice. They arent cheap and neither is your privacy. These services do all the work for you by actively monitoring and systematically erasing your personal information from hundreds of websites. Its what gives me peace of mind and has proven to be the most effective way to erase your personal data from the internet.By limiting the information available, you reduce the risk of scammers cross-referencing data from breaches with information they might find on the dark web, making it harder for them to target you.Check out my top picks for data removal services and get a free scan to find out if your personal information is already out on the web by visiting Cyberguy.com/DeleteGet a free scan to find out if your personal information is already out on the web:Cyberguy.com/FreeScanGET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERETurn on two-step verification in WhatsApp to prevent someone from hijacking your account. This adds an extra PIN code that scammers can't get through, even if they trick you into revealing your login credentials. How to enable two-step verification in WhatsAppOnce enabled, WhatsApp will occasionally ask you to re-enter your PIN to help you remember it. This added layer of security helps block scammers, even if they get access to your phone number or SIM card.If someone messages you on WhatsApp but says they found you on Instagram or a dating app, be extra cautious. Criminal scam centers rely on hopping between platforms to avoid detection. Don't follow links or move conversations unless you've confirmed the identity on another trusted channel. If you use WhatsApp, these new tools give you more control over who contacts you and how. Scams aren't always obvious, but with built-in safety features and a little skepticism, you can avoid costly mistakes. The fact that WhatsApp has banned millions of accounts shows just how widespread and organized these scams have become. Staying informed is your first line of defense.Scammers will always look for new ways to trick people, but apps like WhatsApp are fighting back with smarter tools and better protections. Knowing what to watch for and how to respond can make all the difference. Trump claims DC crimes trounce stats from notoriously violent cities worldwide
President Donald Trump claimed crimes in Washington, D.C., trounce data from notoriously violent cities in nations such as Mexico and Colombia during his Monday morning press conference announcing he is federalizing the D.C. police department to curb spiraling violence."The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, some of the places that you hear about as being the worst places on Earth, much higher," Trump said Monday. "This is much higher. The number of car thefts has doubled over the past five years, and the number of carjackings has more than tripled. Murders in 2023 reached the highest rate, probably ever. They say 25 years, but they don't know what that means because it just goes back 25 years can't be worse."Trump whipped out charts showing the media that the nation's capital allegedly suffers worse crime trends than other cities worldwide, calling on them to "take a look at numbers" as he rattled off the data's findings."Look at these. Baghdad is we doubled up on Baghdad. Panama City, Brasilia, San Jose, Costa Rica, Bogota, Colombia. Heavy drugs. Mexico City, I mentioned Lima, Peru, all double and triple what they are. So do you want to live in places like that? I don't think so. I don't think so. And I think the people in this room, if you wrote correctly, you'd see. Look at the kind of numbers we have. D.C. 41 per 100,000 (for homicides in 2023). Number one that we can find anywhere in the world. Other cities are pretty bad, but they're not as bad as that. That the way you want to live? The reporters of the world? Juvenile offenders and crimes against persons as they say, it's getting worse, not getting better. It's getting worse," he continued.TRUMP IS THREATENING TO 'FEDERALIZE' DC WITH NATIONAL GUARD AND MORE. HERE'S HOW THAT COULD PLAY OUTFox News Digital reached out to the White House for copies of the charts, data and its citations, but did not immediately receive a reply. The nation overall saw an uptick in violent crimes in 2020, when protests and riots broke out in cities across the nation at the height of the pandemic. That year notched a nearly 30% increase in murders compared to the year prior, according to FBI data, marking the largest single-year increase in killings since the agency began tracking the crimes. The nation's capital in the following years has been rocked by shootings that have left innocent children shot and dead, a trend of juveniles committing carjackings that have turned deadly in some cases, shoplifting crimes and attacks on government employees, summer interns and others, including the fatal shooting of 21-year-old congressional intern, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, in June.Trump announced Monday that he was federalizing the local police department starting Monday under section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, which allows the president to assume emergency control of the capital's police force."This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we're going to take our capital back," he said. "We're taking it back under the authority vested in me as the president of the United States, I'm officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. You know what that is. And placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control. In addition, I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC. And they're going to be allowed to do their job properly."

Illinois Democrats tell feds to stop trying to 'usurp' state authority over immigration
Illinois Democrats are pushing back on Trump-era attacks against the states immigration-related policies, arguing the statutes uphold the Constitution, support public safety and leave federal authorities free to do their jobs."These policies are in accordance with the law, maintain local autonomy, boost local economies, focus law enforcement resources on serving local needs, and promote effective policing strategies that foster trust between police and the communities they serve," reads a letter by Rep. Jesus Garcia and Sen. Richard Durbin. The letter noted how the Justice Department labeled both Illinois and Chicago as "sanctuary jurisdictions" in its latest public listings, and rebutted the assertion that either the state or city is committing any sort of violation. The letter, backed by several Illinois Democrats, pointed to the states TRUST Act signed by then-Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican. Critics have long called it a sanctuary-style policy for barring police from holding people over immigration status alone.MAMDANI STUDIES 'AMERICA'S WORST MAYOR' BRANDON JOHNSON TO AVOID HIS POLITICAL PITFALLS: REPORT"Similarly, the Chicago Welcoming City Ordinance prevents the arrest or detention of an individual solely on the basis of a civil immigration violation and prevents local officials from giving ICE access to detainees unless such access is based on a legitimate law enforcement purpose that is not civil immigration enforcement," Garcia and Durbin wrote."Consistent with the Illinois TRUST Act, the Welcoming City Ordinance does not prevent ICE from engaging in immigration enforcement activities," they said, adding that Cook County which includes Chicago has similar policies. They claimed, citing court precedent, that state or local authorities holding people without an immigration detainer violates the Fourth Amendment while federal detention does not.CHICAGO MAYOR CALLS ICE RAIDS TERRORISM, SAYS TRUMP'S AMERICA APPEARS AS IF THE CONFEDERACY WOULD HAVE WON"Therefore, in passing these laws, Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago along with hundreds of other jurisdictions across the country protect local resources while ensuring compliance with the Constitution and leaving the enforcement of federal immigration law to federal officials."Garcia, who emigrated from Durango, Mexico, in 1965, went on to ask DHS and the DOJ in return to stop trying to allegedly "usurp" their authority, "as lawmakers who value the rule of law, public safety, and the U.S. Constitution" when it comes to critiquing how Illinois handles immigrants.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP"These laws neither impede nor interfere with the enforcement of federal immigration law by federal authorities."The Justice Department confirmed receipt of the letter but declined further comment.Fox News Digital also reached out to DHS for comment but did not hear back by press time.

Cincinnati assault: Police chiefs rip leaders over bail laws, gaps in the judicial process
Local police chiefs are sounding off after viral footage of a brutal Cincinnati assault shined new light on what local leaders are saying is a consistent failure regarding violent offenders being released onto the citys streets. In a statement released by the Hamilton County Association of Chiefs of Police on Aug. 8, the organization blasted local leaders for "gaps in the judicial process" within the local government."It is not enough to arrest violent offenders if they are swiftly released back into our neighborhoods due to lax bail practices or insufficient sentencing," the statement said.CINCINNATI VIRAL BEATING BODYCAM RELEASED AS SUSPECTS FACE NEW CHARGES IN GRAND JURY INDICTMENTThe association vowed to host a roundtable discussion with local leaders within the next 30 days to address the communitys concerns regarding safety after the July 26 beatdown on the corner of Fourth and Elm streets left six injured and led to six arrests."The goal is to foster open, solution-focused dialogue around strengthening public safety while ensuring fairness and integrity across the entire justice process," the statement said. The update comes as police response time to the fight has been heavily criticized after Cincinnati Police Chief Theresa Theetge revealed only 11 officers were stationed downtown when the beatdown occurred.CINCINNATI MAYOR UNDER FIRE FOR POLICE MANAGEMENT AFTER VIRAL BEATING EXPOSES LAX BAIL LAWSThe citys bail policies have also come under fire from Republican mayoral challenger Cory Bowman, who is looking to unseat incumbent Mayor Aftab Pureval, a Democrat, in the upcoming election."There are things from City Hall that are showing that the police are not supported the way they need to," Bowman, Vice President JD Vances half-brother, told Fox News Digital. "They are unable to do their jobs because they've been told time and time again that they have to use restraint in certain things instead of enforcing the law. They're told to dial back, and then what happens is that we have prosecutors and judges that have a catch-and-release system."The mayors office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digitals request for comment.CINCINNATI BRAWL TIMELINE: BRUTAL ASSAULT SPIRALS INTO NATIONAL FIRESTORMWhilecitywide data indicates crime throughout Cincinnati has remained on par with last years numbers,Bowman echoed the sentiments of the police department, blaming the citys leadership for the reason police feel unsupported while carrying out their duties."So many officers have come to me, and they've said they don't even see a point in making arrests because the criminals are just going to be back on the streets the very next day," Bowman said. "We have to put pressure on all the judges and prosecutors, and we have to be able to let the officers know, Do your job, see your training and do your job properly, and you're going to have all of City Hall to back you up in that circumstance."On Friday, a grand jury indicted the six individuals arrested in connection with the violent assault that sent shockwaves through the community.CINCINNATI MAYORAL CANDIDATE, VP VANCE'S HALF-BROTHER, SLAMS CITY LEADERSHIP AFTER BRUTAL BEATDOWNPatrick Rosemond, 38, Jermaine Matthews, 39, Montianez Merriweather, 34, DeKyra Vernon, 24, Dominique Kittle, 37, and Aisha Devaughn, 25, are each charged with three counts of alleged felonious assault, three charges of assault and two charges of aggravated rioting, the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to Fox News Digital.Merriweather was previously indicted just two weeks before the violent attack for allegedly receiving stolen property, weapons under disability, improper transportation of a firearm and other charges, according to the Cincinnati Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Queen City Lodge #69.The order also revealed that at the time of the beatdown, Merriweather was out of jail on $4,000 bond, though he only needed to post 10% or $400 to be released."This is your court system," the FOP said in a social media post. The association is looking to fellow leaders within Cincinnatis government to provide further transparency surrounding bail laws as they look to keep violent offenders off the streets."Just as law enforcement is held to high standards and evaluated on our daily practices, we must also understand the outcomes taking place in courtrooms and who is responsible for them," the association said. "Let us be clear: we will not allow the dedication and sacrifice of our law enforcement professionals to be rendered meaningless by systemic failures or the absence of shared responsibility."Fox News Digital's Peter D'Abrosca and Greg Wehner contributed to this report.
